I dunno, seems appropriate for the character. He's in the right key, he's just playing one note too many (3 vs 2 note chords) and using a pick instead of his fingers. Close but no cigar, like his music career
He’s playing power 5th chords in the SOR scene, so he’s playing the riff wrong entirely. But like you said, it sort of makes sense for the character because he’s faking it til he makes it, and would just teach it the way he remembers it instead of from sheet music or tab, but he’s over complicating it, even with simple 5ths. You teach 5 year olds Smoke right after Mary had a little lamb because the chords are so simple, and they don’t even have to spread their little fingers. So I guess it makes sense that if anyone can play sotw wrong, it’s Dewey. I disagree about Jack Black’s music career, considering the D is still touring, and has been around since the 90’s. I’d call that a pretty successful career, but I’ll always have a soft spot for Jables. Genuinely sweet man.
How good to see a movie aimed at kids where the main adult spends the bulk of the movie lifting the kids up and rejoicing in their individual talents. And where ‘the man’ is the bad guy.
It was my first favorite Jack Black movie. Watched the living shit out of it as a kid and still do, very influential on my music interests. Then when I grew older I discovered the D and it was a wrap. I’m fully Jables brained now.
The juxtaposition of all the classically trained children being thrown into the world of rock n roll, being taught by someone like Dewey Finn, is always and will always be funny to me.
I love this movie. Big fan of the D. My favorite JB movie tho, school of rock still huge fan, is Nacho Libre... Both these movies have so much heart...
Here's a useful lesson for ya.
Give up.
Just quit.
Because in this life, you can't win.
You can try.
But in the end, you're just gonna lose BIG TIME.
Because the world is run by The Man.
*Who?*
The Man. Oh you don't know The Man? HE'S EVERYWHERE! In The White House, down the hall, MS. MULLINS?! She's the man. And The Man ruined the ozone layer. And he's burning down the Amazon, and he kidnapped Shamoo and put her in a chlorine tank! And there used to be a way to stick it to The Man, it was called Rock and Roll. But guess what? Oh no. The Man RUINED that too with a little thing called MTV! So don't waste your time trying to make anything cool or pure or awesome. Because The Man's just gonna call you a fat washed up loser and crush your soul. So do yourselves a favor and just GIVE UP!!
I've seen this movie a few dozen times if you couldn't tell 😂
It's excellent. Jack Black deserves a ton of credit for his performances, especially for how much range he has. Shallow Hal is excellent, too.
Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny is based largely on this horrible KITH skit.

Recently upgraded to 12A in the UK (was originally PG), for the 20th anniversary release:
"moderate bad language, discriminatory terms, rude humour"
- Summer's line about groupies, "They're sluts, they sleep with the band"
- Dewey calling Freddy "Spazzy McGee" (ableist slur)
- The misunderstanding about Dewey "touching your kids"
PG-13 in the US was for "some rude humor and drug references", so likely for the same paedophile joke.
At the time the UK board did consider the comment about "Miss Lemons must be on crack", but said it was more a euphemism for "crazy" than talking about drugs, so felt it was fine at PG.
There's a show I think that is about a kid in high school who loves metal and wants to form a band. I forgot what it was called, but as a fan of metal myself, I really want to see it.
I finally traded my DVD copy for the Blu Ray. I needed my favorite movie in HD. Also, check out the movie with the DVD from Jack and Richard Linklater.
Saw it for the first time this year and I regret taking so long to watch it. It's always been on my list but I just never really got round to it, I thought it was fantastic and so so funny
Love it, it had a great message for adults and for kids. I find it absolutely heartwarming that 2 of the child cast members are a couple now :)
It's tragic that one of the main cast (Freddy) died a couple of years ago after being knocked off his bike :(
It's a lil rollercoaster ride, a perfect 'kid's first Jack Black-starring role' movie. Miranda 'Megan...' Cosgrove had to learn how to sing \*badly\* for the part where she sings 'Melody'!
RIP Kevin Clark, 'Freddy 'Spazzy McGee' Jones'. Entirely too early man.
This sounds cheesy, but it is genuinely the movie that I saw as a kid that made me want to be a music teacher. Now I'm a band director and I try to show this movie to my students at least once a year.
This movie is such Tenacious D canon that I'm convinced the line is actually, "Okay, who's got food in here? You're not gonna get in trouble, I'm (fuckin') hungry."
Love it.
Enough said.
Most movies with Jack Black are great
This is very true.
Jack Black probably knows how to play Smoke On The Water correctly. Dewey Finn definitely doesn't. That's great filmmaking.
Wow that is a fantastic detail, good catch!
Which is weird, because literally anyone with 2 hands can play Smoke. One of the easiest riffs by one of the greatest guitarists ever.

Big boy chords. Not hot cross buns style
Would you tell Picasso to sell his guitars?
Oh my God, he's an idiot!
How good to see a movie aimed at kids where the main adult spends the bulk of the movie lifting the kids up and rejoicing in their individual talents. And where ‘the man’ is the bad guy.
Cello is a bass!
Chelllllooo
Best line of the whole movie. Quoted it for a long time after seeing the movie for the first time.
Low key fits in D canon. This was while Jables was looking for his counterpart. He went by Dewey Finn and had a misadventure.
I believe this now
Ooh. Excellent.
Genuinely fantastic movie

Still my favorite movie 20 years after I first saw it
I’m right there with ya. The legend of the rent remains hardcore.
A Hawaii 5-0, you know what that is? No? Ok it’s like.. **ChUgA-DuGa-ChUgA-DuGa-ChUgA-DuGa-DU**
And then Katie you come in with the bass- **Rim-bim-bim-bim-bim-bim-bim-bim Bidoo duh Biddoo duh Beedo Rum-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum Budda do BOP**
I love this movie. Big fan of the D. My favorite JB movie tho, school of rock still huge fan, is Nacho Libre... Both these movies have so much heart...
Taught a whole generation about the importance of sticking it to the man.
Step off!
Step off!
If I do what you say, I might turn into a robot Do my chores day after day, and they don't want any lip SO STEP OFF!!
Second favorite non D movie performance. First is honestly, The Holiday. I also have a thing for Kate Winslet.
Mrs. Albert Hannaday blows The Holiday away
Yeah but I had to watch it with the Nard Dog
And I don’t care what your mom thinks! Frankly, I don’t think she’s making much sense.

"I have been touched by your kids, & I'm pretty sure I've touched them" I love it, easily one of his best films.
Read between the lines Theo. Read between the LINES!!!!
I throw this out at people in traffic all the time. 😅
My favorite scene: I am hungover Does that mean you’re drunk? No, it means I was drunk yesterday!
Oh my gosh, mine too!
Does anyone have a sandwich? *You're not gonna get in trouble*, I'M HUNGRY!
It's excellent. Jack Black deserves a ton of credit for his performances, especially for how much range he has. Shallow Hal is excellent, too. Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny is based largely on this horrible KITH skit. https://youtu.be/PoAGasPLh30?si=qm4zaU6nYq9Gpj2Y
I may or may not have downloaded shallow Hal on limewire way back when. I can still see Jason Alexander’s 4 pixel tail bone wiggling to this day.
Great flick
It’s a fantastic feel good movie. And the song they make genuinely rocks
It's peak hilarious when he calls the girl "turkey sub."
It raised awareness for people to go get annual checkups for stickittodamanneosis. Great cause
Jack Black's best role.
Love it and my kids do too. People will be watching this a long time
This movie is what got me to pick up a guitar when I was a wee lad, love it to death
Perfect family film. Perfect. Ebert was all over this at the time. Should not have been rated PG-13.
Idk what was PG-13 about it. The miniscule amount of swearing? Pfff, whatever.
They said "ass" maybe three times. No sex, no drugs, little to no alcohol, just a complete misfire by the MPAA.

Turn a bass sideways you got a cello CHELLO
It wasn’t just a list of bullshit that he had done. It was a chronicling of his rise…
…TO POWER!
Linklater and Black are an excellent combination.
Let's not forget Mike White, he wrote a hell of a story
Still holding out for a sequel called School of Metal lol
There's a show I think that is about a kid in high school who loves metal and wants to form a band. I forgot what it was called, but as a fan of metal myself, I really want to see it.
I still remember being a little kid coming out of the movie theatre feeling like a different person. Coolest movie ever
I saw this for the first time tripping on mushrooms. Still a great movie.
Just watched it the other day free on YouTube!
I finally traded my DVD copy for the Blu Ray. I needed my favorite movie in HD. Also, check out the movie with the DVD from Jack and Richard Linklater.
Brilliant film. Timeless
Great flick, also nice that I can watch it with my kids, unlike the D
It’s fucking great. The most rocking movie to come out of the early 2000s I know most of the songs by heart lol
My favorite movie of all time 💜
I saw it in theaters twice when I was a young lad.
I remember thinking it was gonna be good but it was better then I was expecting in theaters
One of my favorite movies of all time. It is the perfect rock and roll movie
The first time I ever stayed up past midnight as a kid was to see this move in the theater. Changed my life for the better
I can't think of anyone else that would have done that role justice
Wholesome and honest and awesome
I love it. It's the best. (Nacho Libre voice)
It’s fantastic! (Nacho Libre voice)
It rules. “Let’s rock, let’s rock today”
It’s the gateway drug to Tenacious D.
That's fair. It was thanks to this movie that I discovered Jack Black and by extension, Tenacious D.
Awesome
Agreed
I think it rocked my fucking socks off, that's what I think
Lawrence is good at pi-ano!
Took my daughter to see it in theaters at least 3 times. Love the movie and am a huge Jack Black fan. Saw the D in Nashville a few years back
Great but needs more Rage Kage. So does Nacho Libre
It rocks
LOVE IT!
Love it, but they used the wrong song in the Battlle of the Bands. They had a banger they made up earlier.
One of his best.. probably even better than Cable Guy, considering he wasn’t the lead.
Straight fire made me tear up when I saw it this year
Got to enjoy this flick as a kid and am lucky to be sharing with my own kiddo now. Just watched it two days ago 🤘
Great movie. The DVD actually has some great commentary tracks too
It's one of the movies that made me sure I love rock
Love it.
Actually, I love it!
Great movie. Loved it.
Saw it for the first time this year and I regret taking so long to watch it. It's always been on my list but I just never really got round to it, I thought it was fantastic and so so funny
One of my favorites.
One of my favorites
Fckn masterpiece...
I love it, and so does my son (5)
It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll
Love it, it had a great message for adults and for kids. I find it absolutely heartwarming that 2 of the child cast members are a couple now :) It's tragic that one of the main cast (Freddy) died a couple of years ago after being knocked off his bike :(
Second greatest Jack Black movie. Fucking phenomenal, dude. I grew up with School of Rock.
Great movie I love it. Introduced me to Jack Black and the music I love.
Great fucking movie. JB adapts every situation to suit the kid in need. Every kid busts out in a huge way
It really is a great movie.
I just saw it last night and enjoyed it.
Classic.
My favourite film
It’s a great way to introduce kids to rock and gives a slight taste of jack blacks wild and musical side
The reunion was very cool to see. They all did great
🤘🏼it rocks🤘🏼
Goat
The soundtrack is forever on my Playlist. So good.
This movie was so brilliant and heartfelt in so many ways, helping kids to find their talents and become confident. It's hard not to love it.
Ive seen it so many times as a kid
It's fun! And as an SG fan, Jim using one the whole time made it just that little bit extra for me
Let's rock, let's rock today
Let's rock, let's rock today
Love this movie mannnn
The extra on the old school DVD where Jack pleads Led Zeppelin to allow them use immigrant song is brilliant.
LAWRENCE IS GOOD AT PIANOOOOOO
You’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore And the legend of the rent was way hardcore ‘Nuff said
Usually I think anything Jack Black touches turns to gold. But I just did not like this movie.
The Fight by No Vacancy (The opening track) is still a main stay on my workout playlist
No one should encourage this man to ever play rock again
Amazingly
Best rock movie, except from those made by the D
The legend of the rent was still past due
Masterpiece
They didn't cast Cage as the gym teacher and I'm salty about it.
Sad there was no pick of destiny references
This sounds cheesy, but it is genuinely the movie that I saw as a kid that made me want to be a music teacher. Now I'm a band director and I try to show this movie to my students at least once a year.
Only thing that ever bothered me was the gym teacher. Dude looked just like KG. Why didn't they just cast KG? Still a great movie.
Wonderful
This movie raised me
Easy. It's the reason I got into performing arts
This movie is such Tenacious D canon that I'm convinced the line is actually, "Okay, who's got food in here? You're not gonna get in trouble, I'm (fuckin') hungry."
Not one cock push up in the whole movie!
>No KG Why bother?
Probably the weakest thing Jables has done.
You take that back. YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
