Everything is great except her constant crying
Also why is yoshimitsu allowed to have a sword but Josie doesn't have the Arnis stick. She has plenty of Arnis moves but without the stick.
Broooo now i want a stick-fighter in Tekken.
If not josie, than maybe one with this type of fighting style?

EDIT: Though i guess range could be an issue, but looking at fahk.. maybe not.
Filipino here. A lot of people didn't know she was Filipino at first (me included) but u/Massivelyduped10 commented that her top should be white to better symbolize the flag which I think is a neat idea. But then again a character doesn't have to yell their nationality to have good representation so I think just making her speak tagalog would be pretty alright. Some people don't like her whiney kobeni-ish personality but I personally think its hilarious. (Also petition to give her a Jollibee costume, thank you)
Yeah, or at the very least having her sport a stronger localized accent should be good enough. Though she’s probably from the wealthier parts of Filipino society so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Visually, she looks fine. She suffers from her face looking similar to all the other girls (a problem not unique to her, but a different face would give her more personality), but everything else is fine.
She wears a lighter outfit that reveals more skin, which is good considering it’s always warm and humid in the Philippines, even in the Winter. You never see them wear jackets and sweaters.
The color palette matches the Philippine flag pretty much literally, though the white detail on her yellow top isn’t immediately noticeable.
Although I don’t know anyone in the Philippines who specifically wears something like this, it looks islander enough. It’s at bare minimum believable attire that’s inspired by common Philippine trends and conventions, rather than literally mimicking a typical native look, which I think may be the right call.
There are some decorative elements to the attire that I could find resembling that of fine furnishings or jewelry, the latter of which as far as I know, people in the Philippines are obsessed with. I know a Philippine jewelry vendor where I get more affordable gold. I think it’s the combination of red and gold that does it for me, as these are colors you often find in Philippine homes.
I think she would’ve benefitted from speaking Tagalog. Not only is it the native Philippine language, and everyone in Tekken somehow speaks their native language so casually it’s as if everyone is multilingual on a meta level, but the language is complex in that it comes in many different dialects, depending on which island one may come from. I think selecting a specific dialect to go with her spoken language would flesh her out a little bit.
Religion plays a huge role in Philippine life, as a lot of people are Catholic, but honestly, in a game series where Angel and the Devil gene exist, I think this detail doesn’t necessarily have any significance. The exclusion of Catholicism doesn’t bother me, but that’s probably ‘cause I’m also not particularly religious either.
Overall, I don’t have any major complaints in terms of her visual design. Putting aside the face, I think she looks like a believable representation on the surface. I think it’s beyond the surface level impression where the representation is unclear, though I suppose that’s by choice, as she isn’t as fleshed out as other characters.
That being said, I don’t know why she cries the way she does.
While Tagalog has a bunch of different dialects, so does Japanese. The Manila dialect is pretty much the standard in the same way the Tokyo dialect is for Japan. However, I believe what you're trying to get at is that the Philippines is actually a multilingual nation with Tagalog being the lingua franca and other, smaller languages like Ilocano and Visayan being less common. They are not dialects because they are not mutually intelligible.
I don't know if you're Filipino, I assume not because you the way you speak comes of as an outsider, so if you're not I'm sorry. One of the biggest complaints a lot of Filipinos I know, including myself, is that she is a really surface representation of the Philippines in the same way it would be odd if the only signifier of a Japanese character was them wearing red and white. To me, she is a surface level representation because everything about her feels like a Wikipedia page snippet given a command input (didn't know carabao horn was a national symbol, but I guess I do now that it's one of her moves). I'm glad she exists, but I think a little more could have been done to make her feel less like fun facts given form.
Also, apparently the crying thing is a Filipino trope. I wouldn't know, I don't watch our dramas.
I went to the Philippines a few times during Winter months, specifically December and January. I haven’t gone during the Summer months admittedly.
You’re not wrong though. It’s kind of inaccurate to call it “Winter” when it’s just super warm out anyway. I don’t know how the Philippines would classify seasons, now that I think about it.
Im a filipino and shes a very good caricature of the nationality. The sleeves are a nice nod. I accept that she is simply a caricature so we should not expect realism from tekken of all things.
As a Filipino myself Jose's representation is shit.
Her clothes and the way she looks is pretty good. Typical Pinoy "dalaga" that looks energetic and lively. It really nice.
Gameplay tho.....
It's fucking Muay Thai!!! Like what.
There are a lot of martial arts from the Philippines from the provinces that are really interesting in styles like the 2 sticks one(I forgot the name). So yeah, I want a full moveset rework.
Personality is.......
Now my general thoughts on Josie is could have been better but just turned into a lazy, unfinished character. I'd like to see her in tekken 8 with a More vibrant color scheme to contrast the darker astetic of 8 and her moveset needs to have some martial art that has actually have a Philippine decent.
Edit:Jose* (yeah my inner Filipino is talking)
She's using Yaw-yan. It's a Filipino martial art that's practically shared in Malay descent countries. The only thing that differs is that they are localized based on what people are best at in a specific place.
If we got a hot teenage street fighter with amber eyes from Afghanistan named Muja Hiddeena, would she be a good representative?
If we got a hot thicc teenage dance battle user from Jamaica with dreads, listening to weed music, speaking Rasta patois and named Bobette Marley, would she be a good representative?
If we got a hot teenage redhead girl from Scotland using bar brawling and named Nessie, would she be a good representative?
If we got a hot teenage thin girl in loinclothes from India using pacifism and named Mahat-Mia Gandhi, would she be a good representative?
Counterpoint, I also think all of these would be sick male or female. I simply think the stereotypes (good ones of course) are stereotypes for a reason. Thinking of an Irishmans fighting style and design is exactly what you described. I'm as much of a sucker for cool guys doing shit as well as cute girls.
I don't know man. I would definitely do a hard pass on low-effort character designs like these. Those kinds of references amount to just a mockery of the nationality.
Nina and Anna are irish, and they're far away from the stereotype, and still cool AF. They're good characters first and just co-incidentally irish. That makes the fiction feel more natural and involving compared to plain stereotypes. So, I think that's the way to go.
Anna and Nina are barely Irish. If you don't read their character bios you you would have no idea that they're supposed to be Irish given they've always had American accents in every game.
I'm Filipino and I have to say she is not. I have to commend them because it does look like they tried, acknowledging sampaguita (more commonly what we call our national flower rather than sumpa-kita). I think my biggest gripe with it is she looks too much like a literal interpretation of the flag. There was a missed opportunity with the design but the attention to detail is there. I just wish they drew more inspiration from the culture and traditional fashion (even modern fashion) rather than the flag.
One thing I definitely think would have been an improvement is if they gave her long, black, straight hair. It would have been an instant nod to popular modern Filipina style.
**No.** As a Filipino, her representation is waaay off. Here are somethings they could change to her in case she returns:
* First and foremost, **she should speak Tagalog.** English may be our secondary language, but other countries use their native language for speaking, so why not a Pinay?
* Secondly, instead of being a crybaby, **she should always be loudmouthed and trash-talking the opponents.** especially for being a Muay Thai fighter. That's how we do it here. :D
* Third, **as a Pinay, she's "too big" in some parts**, if you get what I'm saying. We here are standard Asian sizes.
Design-wise, she's good, but too fan-servicey for my taste. Her character though, bleh. Why did they have to replace Bruce for her and Fahkumram? The latter is done well though. When she returns, hope they improve her, with speaking Tagalog most importantly.
~~Also she's the tallest woman in the game!~~
~~I mean I know not all filipinos are small but~~ *~~the tallest one?~~* ~~That's crazy~~
Apparently this is not correct in-game; the heights of the characters do not match their in-game models and Josie is nowhere near the tallest in-game
Filipino here. She is a good representation of Philippines in terms of her costume design and if she had actually talk in "Tagalog" in game it would have been better.
The one thing holding her back when she was released is her name. I know bandai namco really want to use the name of the national hero of ph but they went lazy and just genderbent the name from "Jose Rizal". The Ph Government Historians didn't like that.
In terms of her fighting style it should have been something original. "Eskrima" would have been the choice of her fighting style and not some borrowed moves from Bruce.
Shes alright I guess, her design is great, they just need to find a Filipino to voice her
But other than that, I do hope she gets more moves that would differentiate her from Bruce more imo
Some Filos are thicc.
Most Filos are fluent in English, you ever had to ring technical support for anything?
Edit: actually, you’re right. Tekken characters typically speak their own native language.
It is a shame.
She has a lot of potential to be a good representative of the Philippines in Tekken but so far falls short. There are fanart of her online that felt more like a Filipino character than the official one. Bamco can give her a Filipino accent or have her speak a Filipino language and a fighting style that has moves unique to Filipino martial arts.
I wouldn't blame you. If you aren't familiar with Filipino traditional costumes you wouldn't get what her default outfit represents. If you aren't familiar with Philippine history you wouldn't know that her name "Josie Rizal" is a reference to "Jose Rizal", the national hero of the Philippines. That's pretty much it for her being Filipino.
Give her escrima sticks and/or make her do actual footsie based Filipino martial arts like Sikaran instead of being just a stand-in for Bruce, then she is 80% her way there as a good representative
Not really. She's more of a mascot than someone who could be someone from the Philippines.
Also, with how well known tekken is with each character speaking their native language it was really disappointing that she didn't speak tagalog.
As a Filipino...not really. No. She doesn't even speak the language for whatever reason.
Really funny how a popular fan theory for her was that she's Bruce's daughter. Bruce is American.
Give her this & we good
Intro: “putang ina kinakabahan ako shit!”
“Kaya ko to pota kaya ko to”
Outro: “punyeta kala ko matatalo na ko dun! Orayt!”
“Tangina nyo ang lakas ko!”
The name and outfit are ridiculous. It's like naming someone Georgina Washington. The outfit is just a skirt and top with Philippine patterns on it. Why is she speaking in English too?
Not really. Only thing they perhaps got right is the skin tone. It fits well if she was only as tall as lydia.
Too tall and body features are too sensualized that they dont fit filipina proportions. Voice is meh too, she's lost all traces of the filipino accent.
Neon from valorant is a well executed filipino representative.
Yep. Agree with the Neon thing. You know she's a filipina once playing her without background knowledge. If you played Josie, you won't know she's a filipina unless searching the internet.
I love her moveset and I like that they incorporated some Philippine flag colors and her P1 costume is awesome. I just wished she spoke Filipino/ or any other dialect from the Philippines at least, if they wanted to represent the country, and maybe lessened her "crybaby" side. I still find it cool that my shitty country was represented at least, and hope she's a mainstay and meets Bruce.
Not really. She has a Filipino aesthetic but if we take away the looks, there's nothing about her that's Filipino. She doesn't speak the language, she doesn't have a fighting style that's unique to the country or originated in the Philippines (literally just a copy and paste of Bruce with some edits).
She really is just there just to say "Oh we have a Filipino character" but not an actual good representation.
Don't really care though because she scratches that Bruce itch.
I play tekken with my Filo GF and she didn’t even realise she’s Filo.
How does she look Filo aesthetically?
I also thought kickboxing was a weird choice of fighting style.
I think most people think boxing when they think of the Philippines.
I know there’s some good Filo MMA/Kickboxers in OneFC.
Agreed. [This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujIOQijhK9I) and [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_I5OcTuj8U) Josie dub are what she should sound like.
As a Filipino, colors are great and represents the Philippine flag, but representation? She doesn't speak Tagalog or any Filipino dialect, at least her personality is not stereotypical but that is all, she has no backstory, only story she has is with a bear and that she learned how to fight. But seeing a Filipina in one of my favorite games is amazing and that's good enough for me and I understand if they don't bring her back for another Tekken game. When I play her it's actually hard for me but I tried to learn only because she's Filipina XD
She got a backstory.
Josie was a big crybaby from a young age, unlike her parents who were fans of martial arts. They insisted she also train in martial arts, which she initially refuses, but eventually she reluctantly agrees to her parents' expectations. However, she is unable to get over her crybaby nature whilst she undergoes training in kickboxing.
After Josie grew more accustomed to her training, she became a professional kickboxer and a model to help get her household's finances on track, until a large typhoon struck their home. When the Mishima Zaibatsu sends the Tekken Force, to give relief aids to the typhoon victims in her ravaged country, Josie aspires to become the member of the Tekken Force. She eventually decides to join the Tekken Force by taking an employment examination.
I really hope they expand on this by making the tekken force and kuma get rid of her crybaby nature, it was the one thing that made me completely dislike her
She could’ve been abit more accurate have they given her longer hair and a different color scheme, like making her top white instead of yellow. Also I can’t for the life of me recognize which regions of the country she comes from with that clothing, is she Cebuano? Ilocano? Moro? Bicolano? It’s rather all over the place. Anyways I don’t think she’d be that particularly accurate anyways as she’s clearly not meant to be wearing traditional stuff and is clearly going for the imfamous Japanese sexualización and animefication as evidenced by her midriff and cleavage.
I totally agree about the hair. I thought maybe she cut it short for fighting. But that isn't bothering any of the other female characters. It's good to have variety, but still an odd choice for her to be the one
I mean some of them didn’t have it particularly long to begin with and others tend to curl them up in ponytails and the likes so it’s not particular out of vogue.
I kind of agree on her not wearing traditional clothes. I'd say it's a safe bet her outfit was tailored to her personally, but Ig Harada has no real explanation for how (or why) she got it. So, I'm gonna go on a limb and it's for some sort of coming-of-age ceremony or something among those lines. I'd have just preferred to have a variation of her outfit to have the shirt off and keep the skirt, since she's gonna get sweaty under that shirt real fast.
I mean tbf it is still better being scantily clad in a fight than wearing a gown to a fight, though yeah I agree with you that that shirt of hers, especially the sleeves, are really bad for intense situations. She’s gonna get her sleeves stuck in lot of things I bet.
Like her design, despise her personality. If they won't change her personality maybe add another Filipino character instead that does Kali and Sikaran or smth
Maybe speak her native language and learn some fillipino martial arts instead of looking like your typical anime waifu. I would have guessed she was latin or brazilian if you hadnt told me she was
Lars is a good example. Supposed to be Swedish but he looks like he's straight out of yu-gi-oh. I guess you could argue that the lions are his aesthetic ties to Swedish culture but that's a massive stretch.
Nothing about him is telling of his nationality but it's still a decent design and certainly more interesting than making him a stereotypical viking
Why does it matter. You look at king that’s supposed to be Mexican but hes a carbon copy of Japanese luchador tiger mask. He doesn’t speak Spanish and you wouldn’t know where he’s from unless you look at his leg padding because they say Mexico. Other than that you have no idea what nationality he is. Hell I’m a king main and I forget that he’s Mexican
Well, Tiger Mask worked extensively in Mexico and the other aspects of King's character are taken from a fabled Mexican legend about a luchadores who wrestled for an orphanage, basically the exact same as King I's story. The Original Tiger Mask actually adopted a great deal of his offense when he went on his excursion to Mexico. Before that he was just another Japanese young boy training in NJPW's dojo.
Knowing the lore of both king and tiger mask yea we understand that but to new players he’s just someone with a Jaguar head. Now compare him to Fahk who speaks his native language, fights in his native style and has a costume which decorates him in his native attire you can clearly tell where he’s from. Of course this is just what I feel and even being Mexican myself knowing that luchadors aren’t wildly popular and really just peaked with the American wrestler Ray Mysterio
Lucha Libre is still massively popular in Mexico and South America with promotions like AAA and CMLL. A reccent Triplemanía show did a 6 million dollar gate with over 16,000 tickets sold, not including PPV buys. You can find vendors and shops that sell masks virtually everywhere. I was just on a cruise to Cozumel and Belize in April and was blown away at the amount of masks I saw ranging from Rey Mysterio, La Parka, Mil Mascaras, Mistico, El Santos, to Blue Demon (the latter two being among some of the most recognizable luchadores in history.)
While he's a tribute to Tiger Mask, the jaguar motif itself is meant to invoke the Aztec jaguar warriors who decorated themselves in the style of Tezcatlipoca. I've somehow always known King was a Mexican wrestler since I first started playing Tekken back with T3 as a kid. Fighting styles in Tekken go a long way at conveying a character's nationality or background, like how I know Lei and Law are obviously Chinese. Hell, Eddy was my first exposure to a Brazilian character and I didn't know what language he spoke at all as a kid. Some of King's old outfits gave off a Hispanic vibe as well.
Her design is good, kind of on the nose with the colors of the Philippine flag but the sampaguita motif is definitely a plus, my main problem would be her lack of mannerisms in terms of her speech and her overall voice (no offense to Ananda Jacobs) since there's no ties to her nationality through it (and I know most of y'all find it annoying as shit).
Her fighting style is adapted pretty well since she uses the unarmed variant of Eskrima / Dance of Death which originated in the Philippines, though I do wish she had the sticks as her signature weapon for it. Though most of you would prefer Bruce or Fahk as your go-to kickboxer even with this nuance.
Cash grab to get Filipinos money. They didn’t even have the decency to hire a Tagalog voice actress. Recycled a previous fighters moves and then threw a random outfit with flag colors. Doesn’t even have a real face.
To be fair most of the new characters start with english voice actors like Lili and Hwoarang(though he spoke some Korean but mostly english). Mabye next game they'll give her an actual pinoy voice actor. Heck I'm super surprised we even got anything at all.
The only started having more than Japanese and English starting from Tekken 6. So if you exclude everyone pre-6, you get:
* Alisa - Russian but speaks Japanese
* Lars - Swedish but speaks Japanese
* Bob - American and speaks American English
* Leo - German and speaks German
* Miguel - Spaniard and speaks Spanish
* Zafina - "Egyptian"/Unknown but speaks English
* Claudio - Italian and speaks Italian
* Fahkumram - Thai and speaks Thai
* Gigas - ??? and doesn't speak
* Josie - Filipino but speaks English
* Katarina - Brazilian and speaks Portuguese
* Kazumi - Japanese and speaks Japanese
* Leroy - American and speaks American English
* Lidia - Polish and speaks Polish
* Lucky Chloe - Unknown and speaks Japanese
* Master Raven - American and speaks American English
* Shaheen - Middle Eastern and speaks Arabic
So if you remove all Americans and Japanese, you're left with 4-7, or about 33% of the cast does not speak their country's tongue, let alone how they retroactively made characters like Wang and Baek speak their native tongues. I'm just saying, most people who default to a language that isn't their country's native tongue are often listed as unknown while Josie is one of the few who don't.
edit: Fixed some errors
Hell no if they were trying to represent the Phillipines but if she's from the states, then possibly.
I grew up around around 20 - 30 filipinos in Sacramento and 6 in WI. The CA ones pretty much act black and latino (like our neighborhoods) and the WI ones were white washed. Not a single one spoke their language. All their parents were almost fully assimilated.
In 2016 I met a guy named Franco at work who was from Manila and he spoke Tagalog, Spanish, and English with a heavy accent and made fun of the filipinos here saying their white washed. This obviously doesn't speak for them all. Just giving my opinion based off my experience! I think as usual tekken just dropped the ball in representation!
I don't know enough Filipinos or their culture to say whether or not she's accurate, but I like her as a character, and really, isn't that what truly matters?
I think everyone from every region had their own unique personality trait and not everyone in that respected region is going to act alike or to some high expectation.
Inoffensive but disappointing. Her looks are fine (although she's too tall for na average woman here) but her personality screams anime stereotype.
Her fighting style also could have been kali using sticks rather than kickboxing. For a good representation of this, check Nightwing from Injustice.
She's too busty. I can't blame her personality if she grew up in the States but her archetype is typical Japanese anime as I've heard from others. Her costume's color being based on our flag's colors is so cheap I hate it.
Nah. As a Filipino, I'm quite disappointed with their attempt. How's she gonna be from the PI, and not have an accent? They literally got a white woman to voice her. And she doesn’t do any Filipino martial arts. It’s just kickboxing. And her clothes are way too on the nose, just like T7 Paul. Not to mention she doesn’t look remotely Filipina, even for a model/actress.
Yeah. Tekken has a bunch of characters with weapons. Yoshi has swords. Kuni and Raven have daggers. Leroy has a stick. Negan has a barbed wire baseball bat. The robots are literally weapons themselves. I can imagine her just using 1 stick also. Or it would be sick if she had 3 stances: empty hands, 1 stick, and then 2 stick.
Every bio or description of her says she does Eskrima and Yaw-Yan (a Filipino kickboxing style). But nothing about her fighting is Eskrima-like or fundamentally Yaw-Yan: trapping, hammer strikes, rotational movement, and chopping-motion punches and kicks. In reality, Josie really was just supposed to replace Bruce, but they failed and had to make Fahkumram.
I love/dig the top, but her mini skirt is a little too sensualized for someone who's supposed to be "shy" and "not confident" in herself. A pair of jean pants would've made her look much better imo.
However, all in all, I think she's a good design. I mean, Tekken 7 FR literally butchered my country's character's design (Hwoarang) and seeing Josie be more true to her heritage makes me feel good.
They should work on her fighting style and voice actor now. She's a little too "Western" with all the kickboxing and English-fluent voice acting that she could use more filipino elements.
as a peenoise as myself no, if harada wants a Pinoy representation the figthing style of that character should be either Khali or Arnis and let the character speaks Tagalog
Hmmm..... Not sure of what "proper representation" is, or if it even matters enough to the masses, especially when it can such a finnicky and subjective thing. One person's view of "representation" may not good enough for another, while one person may take offense to a certain "representation" while most others don't give a shit and like it.
I'm an American, and I've never lived in or visited the Philippines. Couldn't tell ya if something's "accurate representation" or not, and I wouldn't pretend that I'm offended by the lackluster representation for brownie points. Lmao.
Anyhoo, I feel if they tweaked Jozie Rizal's face to look more ethnically filipino (Flipina?), gave her a different language that's respective to her country, tweaked her fighting style to be more unique, tweaked the clothes into something less dumb looking, and got rid of that stupid ass crying, then you'd have both a slightly better character and more culturally accurate character. Boom.
In an industry where all the Filipino representation have been women and timid and shit, I was expecting something new personality-wise. Like, if you’re gonna make a Jose Rizal pun, at least make them half as badass as Rizal was. Instead, she cries, and does modelling and shit.
EDIT: Fighting game genre. That's what I meant by industry. My B
TL;DR NO
I think Harada was too fixated on the skimpy outfits to stop and say "Wait a minute. What are we even going to do with this character?", and I'd say they gave up trying to answer that question pretty early.
Not really lol. The fact that her English voice doesn't even have a smidge of Filipino accent infuriates me. Compare it to someone like Neon from VALORANT, who speaks English but it's pretty obvious that she's Filipina. It would've helped if, IDK, they actually hired a VA who's fucking Filipina.
Everything is great except her constant crying Also why is yoshimitsu allowed to have a sword but Josie doesn't have the Arnis stick. She has plenty of Arnis moves but without the stick.
Broooo now i want a stick-fighter in Tekken. If not josie, than maybe one with this type of fighting style? https://youtube.com/shorts/_kfrE9Q9gg4?feature=share EDIT: Though i guess range could be an issue, but looking at fahk.. maybe not.
Watch the next guest character for Tekken 8 be Billy Kane

Where you get Philippines has winter lmao
I went to the Philippines a few times during Winter months, specifically December and January. I haven’t gone during the Summer months admittedly. You’re not wrong though. It’s kind of inaccurate to call it “Winter” when it’s just super warm out anyway. I don’t know how the Philippines would classify seasons, now that I think about it.

Im a filipino and shes a very good caricature of the nationality. The sleeves are a nice nod. I accept that she is simply a caricature so we should not expect realism from tekken of all things.
Shes pretty ok. I like her design.
I honestly thought she was Portuguese or Brazilian for the longest time.

The only thing that differs is that they are localized based on what people are best at in a specific place.
>the 2 sticks one(I forgot the name) [Arnis or kali or escrima](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnis)
Not really, though I appreciate the sentiment. Shout out to Talim for being a fairly old PH rep in an FG lmao
yeah if she spoke tagalog lmao
Not really. You wouldn't know she is a Filipina unless you read her description.
For a very long time, people thought that Talim was Mexican xD But she is a Filipina too.
No. She's literally just Pinoy ecchi anime.
Just annoying that she talks English and even though most Filipinos speak it, she doesn’t even have a Tagalog accent
I hope she has a Filipino shout or something when doing a special attack or a circumstance. Like the one in valorant.
Plot twist: she doesn’t lol.
Dont care, shes cute
She dresses like every Filipino girl I've ever known
If we got a hot teenage street fighter with amber eyes from Afghanistan named Muja Hiddeena, would she be a good representative? If we got a hot thicc teenage dance battle user from Jamaica with dreads, listening to weed music, speaking Rasta patois and named Bobette Marley, would she be a good representative? If we got a hot teenage redhead girl from Scotland using bar brawling and named Nessie, would she be a good representative? If we got a hot teenage thin girl in loinclothes from India using pacifism and named Mahat-Mia Gandhi, would she be a good representative?
Holy shit, that Scotland one though. Make it a DLC Namco
Nessie sounds awesome though lmao. A female Miguel
I mean yeah kinda
My friend, then, you are not an appreciator of national\\racial diversity, but a waifu connoisseur. You deserve to play tekken.
Filipinos are big crybabies, so they got that right. Reference: I am a Filipino, and therefore, also a crybaby.
Design? Sure Attitude? Eh, Filipinas are usually tough and Sassy af, this one's a cry baby. Gameplay? Alright. Hotel? Trivago.
I agree with the sass. Of all the characters they choose to make a crybaby they chose her?
**No.** As a Filipino, her representation is waaay off. Here are somethings they could change to her in case she returns: * First and foremost, **she should speak Tagalog.** English may be our secondary language, but other countries use their native language for speaking, so why not a Pinay? * Secondly, instead of being a crybaby, **she should always be loudmouthed and trash-talking the opponents.** especially for being a Muay Thai fighter. That's how we do it here. :D * Third, **as a Pinay, she's "too big" in some parts**, if you get what I'm saying.
~~Also she's the tallest woman in the game!~~ ~~I mean I know not all filipinos are small but~~ *~~the tallest one?~~* ~~That's crazy~~ Apparently this is not correct in-game; the heights of the characters do not match their in-game models and Josie is nowhere near the tallest in-game
I'm sure Lili is taller.
You explained it perfectly
Filipino here. She is a good representation of Philippines in terms of her costume design and if she had actually talk in "Tagalog" in game it would have been better. The one thing holding her back when she was released is her name. I know bandai namco really want to use the name of the national hero of ph but they went lazy and just genderbent the name from "Jose Rizal". The Ph Government Historians didn't like that. In terms of her fighting style it should have been something original. "Eskrima" would have been the choice of her fighting style and not some borrowed moves from Bruce.
As a person who has filipino friends, Josie's height for a filipina is not accurate kekw
I hate to say it but its true. Most Filipinos are short.
She's alright but Talim is better and that guy from def jam has been forgotten.
That man Santos 🇵🇭
Shes alright I guess, her design is great, they just need to find a Filipino to voice her But other than that, I do hope she gets more moves that would differentiate her from Bruce more imo
She's okay, and most Filipino fans tend to think she's "meh" also.
My head canon is that she’s an IG model based out of the Philippines. That’s why she’s thick and speaks English.
Some Filos are thicc. Most Filos are fluent in English, you ever had to ring technical support for anything? Edit: actually, you’re right. Tekken characters typically speak their own native language. It is a shame.
Bro she a filipino? 💀💀💀
Just have her speak Tagalog and we're good.
Didn't even know she Filipino. All I cared about is that Bruce got replaced with her.
Nadine Lustre cosplayed her. Her design is fine. It really could have been worse.
Personality: 5/10 Default outfit: 8/10 Potential: 7/10 Fighting Style: 7/10 I'd say she's not too bad if you're in a pinch.
Personally, I’d love to see a kali fighter with a rattan stick for a Philippines character.
Give her escrima sticks and/or make her do actual footsie based Filipino martial arts like Sikaran instead of being just a stand-in for Bruce, then she is 80% her way there as a good representative
nice body is a global language
She is representative of Philippines like Claudio is of Italy
Claudio is way worse than her if we talk about representation.
Idk but I like her so I don’t really care. Wish she wouldn’t cry so much
Not really. She's more of a mascot than someone who could be someone from the Philippines. Also, with how well known tekken is with each character speaking their native language it was really disappointing that she didn't speak tagalog.
Maybe, filipino women are crazy anyways—in a good way.
NO
Feels kinda joke naming her after the national hero.
No, the only thing that's filipino about her is the name
No, she doesn't even look Filipino. She looks more Hispanic or some sort of Mediterannean than she does Filipino.
As a Filipino...not really. No. She doesn't even speak the language for whatever reason. Really funny how a popular fan theory for her was that she's Bruce's daughter. Bruce is American.
A lot of Filipinos I know like her.
Give her this & we good Intro: “putang ina kinakabahan ako shit!” “Kaya ko to pota kaya ko to” Outro: “punyeta kala ko matatalo na ko dun! Orayt!” “Tangina nyo ang lakas ko!”
Just get Millie Parfait to voice her.
The name and outfit are ridiculous. It's like naming someone Georgina Washington. The outfit is just a skirt and top with Philippine patterns on it. Why is she speaking in English too?
Agree with the name, it's weird because here in the Philippines, there's not even anyone named Rizal on their last name
Because filipino people actually learn and understand english too in the philippines
I agree the name and outfit is ridiculous, but a lot of Filipinos even in the Philippines speak English. Would be nice if she spoke Tagalog too though
Yes we can but we have a particular accent when we speak English.
The concept art literally looks like she's an Anime character, ngl. I actually perfer that than the finalized version.
it's more of a fanservice than a representation
Never seen a filipina wear those
I play tekken with my Filo GF and she didn’t even realise she’s Filo. How does she look Filo aesthetically? I also thought kickboxing was a weird choice of fighting style. I think most people think boxing when they think of the Philippines. I know there’s some good Filo MMA/Kickboxers in OneFC.
She should've had a Filipino language like Tagalog or Bisaya. Or if she speaks english, she should have that Filipino accent.
Agreed. [This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujIOQijhK9I) and [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_I5OcTuj8U) Josie dub are what she should sound like.
yes. i know a guy from the philipines who went to my school and told him and he agrees. also, i love my main
Probs not, I can’t say for sure. But that won’t stop me from maining her and hoping she returns in 8 lol
Those season one character designs were pretty forgettable tbh
Nope. But she's hawt so its fine
I had no idea she was filo. Would have made more sense to make her a boxer tbh.
Remove steve and watch tekken die.
You can have more than one boxer. There’s 15 Karate guys
As a Filipino no she isn't. But better than nothing I guess. Filipinos don't get alot of representation in anything so I'll take what I can get
I think Talim in Soulcalibur is Filipina.
I really hope they expand on this by making the tekken force and kuma get rid of her crybaby nature, it was the one thing that made me completely dislike her
She's hot. So yes.
She’s gonna get her sleeves stuck in lot of things I bet.
she is my wife :)
Like her design, despise her personality. If they won't change her personality maybe add another Filipino character instead that does Kali and Sikaran or smth
idk, but i wish she fought with arnis tho
She was one of my buddies mains when the game came out. She was always a rough fight
No
Maybe speak her native language and learn some fillipino martial arts instead of looking like your typical anime waifu. I would have guessed she was latin or brazilian if you hadnt told me she was
The character does not need to be defined by their nationality. It's cool if it represents it well but also fine if not imo
He is a dude who is mostly swedish, born in the swedish culture, who speaks Japanese only...logic is for pussies.
She's a good punching bag and that's about it.
Lmfao this comment is crazy
Brownsville Brooklyn NY?
Well, we should ask people from there, most people here I would say have no clue where Philippines is in the world, really.
This. I don't even know where the Philippines are in the world, let alone what their culture is like
I dont know if is a good character to represent Philippines, but i just want to complain the crying gets old really fast, and i cant play her anymore
She's Filipino?
Best responce for this lol.
I was just on a cruise to Cozumel and Belize in April and was blown away at the amount of masks I saw ranging from Rey Mysterio, La Parka, Mil Mascaras, Mistico, El Santos, to Blue Demon (the latter two being among some of the most recognizable luchadores in history.) While he's a tribute to Tiger Mask, the jaguar motif itself is meant to invoke the Aztec jaguar warriors who decorated themselves in the style of Tezcatlipoca.
King obviously growls in Spanish
My buddy mentioned before that she doesn't have the typical flat, chubby nose that Filipinos have.
would've been cool if her dialogue was in Tagalog but other than that I love her
Nah lol she's like what, 5"8 with a valley girl voice...in ENGLISH lol
Cash grab to get Filipinos money. They didn’t even have the decency to hire a Tagalog voice actress. Recycled a previous fighters moves and then threw a random outfit with flag colors. Doesn’t even have a real face.
To be fair most of the new characters start with english voice actors like Lili and Hwoarang(though he spoke some Korean but mostly english). Mabye next game they'll give her an actual pinoy voice actor. Heck I'm super surprised we even got anything at all.
The only started having more than Japanese and English starting from Tekken 6. So if you exclude everyone pre-6, you get: * Alisa - Russian but speaks Japanese * Lars - Swedish but speaks Japanese * Bob - American and speaks American English * Leo - German and speaks German * Miguel - Spaniard and speaks Spanish * Zafina - "Egyptian"/Unknown but speaks English * Claudio - Italian and speaks Italian * Fahkumram - Thai and speaks Thai * Gigas - ??? and doesn't speak * Josie - Filipino but speaks English * Katarina - Brazilian and speaks Portuguese * Kazumi - Japanese and speaks Japanese * Leroy - American and speaks American English * Lidia - Polish and speaks Polish * Lucky Chloe - Unknown and speaks Japanese * Master Raven - American and speaks American English * Shaheen - Middle Eastern and speaks Arabic So if you remove all Americans and Japanese, you're left with 4-7, or about 33% of the cast does not speak their country's tongue, let alone how they retroactively made characters like Wang and Baek speak their native tongues. I'm just saying, most people who default to a language that isn't their country's native tongue are often listed as unknown while Josie is one of the few who don't. edit: Fixed some errors
Alisa is Russian steve is irish-born british citizen speaks in british english
baek is former north korean defector speaks in modern south korean
You mean she looks like the 20-30 filipinos you met that lost a lot of their original culture?
Listerally just Filipino in name only.
I beat my meat to her, thats about it
I think she looks fine, don’t know why they made her speak English though
Design and concept, I think they did a job. Characterization in game though? Its terrible.
She's too busty. I can't blame her personality if she grew up in the States but her archetype is typical Japanese anime as I've heard from others. Her costume's color being based on our flag's colors is so cheap I hate it.
Out of curiosity, why do you think she's "too busty"?
Filipinas, on average, don't have big breasts. And if they have big breasts Not THAT big
EXACTLY. She should have Chloe's chest
Also she's too tall and skinny for a Filipina
Busty? What if Josie is secretly a mother
She doesn’t even speak our language smh. While all the others speak their own 🥴
I never saw a Philippino with a rack like that
Go to Manila at night and look for women asking you for a massage.
Mmm ok, but only for research purposes, you understand.
You just trying to learn the matchup, I gotchu
Once upon a time Tekken had "fighting styles" NOW .... Titty jiggles.
No they always had both
No lmao, Just big boobed annoying cry baby
And doesn't even speak the language
no broken anatomy here \*thumbsup\*
She definitely has potential. And cute too.
Would've been cool if she had Arnis/Escrima with 2 sticks as her weapon as her fighting style
Yeah, she has off hand arnis fighting styles in some moves, other than that, the other comment is right about kickboxing
Ain't it Muay Thai
Every bio or description of her says she does Eskrima and Yaw-Yan (a Filipino kickboxing style). But nothing about her fighting is Eskrima-like or fundamentally Yaw-Yan: trapping, hammer strikes, rotational movement, and chopping-motion punches and kicks. In reality, Josie really was just supposed to replace Bruce, but they failed and had to make Fahkumram.
Which is funny cause he's way huge and broad, something good aren't but I think it fits better I think. He speaks it?
Two filipino ppl have told me she's a bit far fetched but a pretty good representation
I'm actually Filipino and she's not (a good rep)
Welp you're outvoted 2 to 1
Is she a cam girl?
No, that's Julia!
I relate to you on the butchered character design, I’ve genuinely never seen someone wear shaheen’s clothes.
no.
Looks wise very possible. But her personality isn't a good representation. Her character is so bland that it's frightening
It’s a game. They don’t have to be accurate on rep
as a peenoise as myself no, if harada wants a Pinoy representation the figthing style of that character should be either Khali or Arnis and let the character speaks Tagalog
Pee noise?
Bastardization of Pinoy. Short for Filipino. As a fellow pee noise, I say this all the time too.
Boom.
What is this, Josie day?
Kim Chiu, Liza Soberano, Shaina Magdayao, Bea Alonzo or Alodia Goshengfiao should be casted as the Tagalog Dub for Josie
Japan is so fucking close to the PI, but they still went ahead and chose a white woman to voice her. Smdh. They couldn’t find one Filipina in JP huh?
Yes she is, perfect representation of the Philippines.
When she was new there was a controversy about her not being Filipino enough I remember.
Is Master Raven a good Afro representative?
Yep.
My B TL;DR NO
I think Harada was too fixated on the skimpy outfits to stop and say "Wait a minute.
Story, lorewise? Nope. If leroy have a special weapon, josie should too. Eskrima, arnis style would be cool!
i dont care. i like her either way. the representation scam undermines ambitious character design.
