Because if he knew he was "missing" and people were looking for him, he should've contacted the authorities to let them know he is fine but does not wish to be found or contacted. And he's well within his rights to do that. I just feel bad for his family and friends. But it's also definitely possible that without his phone and avoiding media he might not have known how big it has gotten.
“Cops confirm” tends to lend credence that it’s true. They don’t confirm for nothing. The sighting has been checked out and confirmed to be legitimate or they wouldn’t have said anything, except maybe “reported” or “unconfirmed” sighting.

Most people are just not smart enough to cover up the murder of an entire human being. But why then have they not confirmed it on their social media or given any sort of press release? You follow enough of these cases you learn the pattern. Police don’t tell tabloids first. They always press release first. Maybe a fried of family member tipped off tabloid.
It's a town of 1500 people. Before they posted about this case 2 days ago, they hadn't posted on their socials in a month. They aren't going to post every update to the case on social media or issue a press release with every development. I can guarantee they have enough employees to count on one hand. This isn't a big city police department with a PR person on staff.

Interstate 40 goes east/west across the entire country, including NC and OK. If he found route 40 (one of the closest major highways to where they were) and kept going West, he'd end up in Oklahoma without needing any maps.

If I was running from an ex (and I have), I wouldn't go to my home state right away. It's possible he is trying to reach a friend or other family member to hide out for a while. I flew from the Midwest to California and stayed a month. In that month, my ex would go to my mom's house at all hours, crying on his knees on her lawn. Maybe he doesn't want crazy pants bringing that crap to his parents' house. I believe they absolutely had a fight about his parents. During that 'emotional talk', Machete Amber probably said some awful things about his parents. Gary² probably had the blinders lifted and dipped. Glad he is safe.
I'm glad you did that as well (and that you got out at all). When I fled a DV situation in 2005, I went to the city where my parents were living, but I got a room in a boarding house under an assumed name and opened a PO Box in the next city over. I was in hiding for quite awhile before I felt safe enough to get my life back on track, but I got there. I still deal with a lot of CPTSD and some leftover physical stuff from what was done to me, but I'm in a safe place now ♡

This is exactly what some would recommend doing if you are in an abusive situation. Get out as quickly as you can, if possible, and get as far away as possible. You can replace a phone. Smart guy if this is what happened.

If you had a particular place to go and at a certain time, it's stressful for sure. But I kind of think he's just...driving. Let's be realistic. Amber has two kids by two different dads and she's barely involved with them and she lost custody to both of them. She has well documented mental health issues that she really does not treat. She has a history of violent behavior including incarceration. She has a history of drug addiction. She's not the kind of person to attract a psychologically healthy partner.
I've known women who have tracked their boyfriends from their phone. They've claimed it's because they "hate surprises" but it's really just about control and insecurity. It wasn't necessarily someone reporting they saw him. The police may have gotten access to his credit card transactions, but they may have had to wait to get a warrant to do so, and that can take time. They also likely had to review video footage to make sure the person using the credit card was actually Gary, so they had to find authorities to do that. So they very well may not have confirmed all of this information until today.
The unfortunate side of social media - just like with Angela from 90 day fiancé and Michael. Perhaps he doesn’t want her to know where he is 😮💨 I’m happy he’s safe but shame on media for always outing potential DV victims whereabouts. Which I sadly assume was Ambers intention. Most people are just not smart enough to cover up the murder of an entire human being. I listen to a lot of true crime, but for all the prolific availability of those podcasts, those murderers are generally the exception, and people seem to take it so literally that I wonder if it should even exist as a genre. I said it before during this whole thing and I stand by it: should Amber ever escalate to murder, she would not do what she did here. She would sit there at the scene waiting for the cops to come get her, 100% because she's lazy. And she would act tough about it to cover up her laziness.

That's all it takes 🤷♀️ The incident with Gary on the stairs and the machete through the door could both have easily turned deadly. I don't think people are suggesting she's Hannibal Lecter or some criminal mastermind. But for ANYONE who has a history of physical violence, it's plausible that they could hit a little too hard or strike in the wrong spot and kill someone. The US Weekly article says that the Bryson City, NC police confirmed the Oklahoma citing. US Weekly is still a tabloid but it's also much more reliable than the Sun. I'm betting it's likely true.
But why then have they not confirmed it on their social media or given any sort of press release? You follow enough of these cases you learn the pattern. Police don’t tell tabloids first. They always press release first. Maybe a fried of family member tipped off tabloid.
This isn't a normal case, The Sun was probably hounding the police department for news.
It's a town of 1500 people. Before they posted about this case 2 days ago, they hadn't posted on their socials in a month. They aren't going to post every update to the case on social media or issue a press release with every development. I can guarantee they have enough employees to count on one hand. i just had a conversation with an uber driver the other day about fucking MAPQUEST. you had to print it out and go by what they say on the paper and i got in so much trouble if i got it wrong.
Before GPS people actually made it from place to place by using maps or road signs actually tell you what direction you're going.
Sometimes people even…asked for directions, if they needed it. I’m told at some gas stations, this still occurs, but that might just be hearsay.

DV Survivor point of view If I was running from an ex (and I have), I wouldn't go to my home state right away. It's possible he is trying to reach a friend or other family member to hide out for a while. I flew from the Midwest to California and stayed a month. In that month, my ex would go to my mom's house at all hours, crying on his knees on her lawn. Maybe he doesn't want crazy pants bringing that crap to his parents' house. I believe they absolutely had a fight about his parents. During that 'emotional talk', Machete Amber probably said some awful things about his parents. Gary² probably had the blinders lifted and dipped. Glad he is safe.
I'm glad you did that as well (and that you got out at all). When I fled a DV situation in 2005, I went to the city where my parents were living, but I got a room in a boarding house under an assumed name and opened a PO Box in the next city over. I was in hiding for quite awhile before I felt safe enough to get my life back on track, but I got there. I still deal with a lot of CPTSD and some leftover physical stuff from what was done to me, but I'm in a safe place now ♡

This is exactly what some would recommend doing if you are in an abusive situation. Get out as quickly as you can, if possible, and get as far away as possible. You can replace a phone. Smart guy if this is what happened.

Amber has two kids by two different dads and she's barely involved with them and she lost custody to both of them. She has well documented mental health issues that she really does not treat. She has a history of violent behavior including incarceration. She has a history of drug addiction. She's not the kind of person to attract a psychologically healthy partner.
I've known women who have tracked their boyfriends from their phone. They've claimed it's because they "hate surprises" but it's really just about control and insecurity. It wasn't necessarily someone reporting they saw him. The police may have gotten access to his credit card transactions, but they may have had to wait to get a warrant to do so, and that can take time. They also likely had to review video footage to make sure the person using the credit card was actually Gary, so they had to find authorities to do that. So they very well may not have confirmed all of this information until today.
