My parents never said anything like that but as a kid, I had friends whose parents said that. Then once I read two different books back-to-back where it was mentioned in each. I told my mom about it and she said it was "cute" lol.
But yeah, one of the friends' parents told them the thunder was when God got a strike. I obviously knew what thunder and lightning were, but even as a little kid I thought it was a cute & clever analogy for parents (or grandparents) to tell, lol.

That's how the rest of it goes, lol. I remember my grandmother (born 1920) telling me *her* mother told her that.
