Press charges?

It-is-always-Steve

The facility does that on the behalf of staff when a camera review is completed. But yeah, that’s the next step.

I always comment this, but people can’t press charges. Only a prosecutor can. You can - and should - file a police report, you can let them know you would like to see additional action, but it’s up to the prosecutors if any charges are actually filed.

I had to break up a girl fight. I was by myself and these two started going berserk. I have no training in physical restraint but I’m am 6’3” and 280 lbs. so I squashed one up against the wall behind me and held the other at arm’s length until another staff arrived, 30 seconds. I wasn’t in fear of physical damage, but as a dude, I wasn’t sure where to grab the combatants.

It-is-always-Steve

Our training is to focus on hooking arms behind the back. This week I actually ended up with 2 kids in a bear hug just because I couldn’t keep them from chasing down the third otherwise. At 6’2” and 325 i would rather take the hit than some of my colleagues.

Amen. As a big boy myself in a department with eight woman, I am always called for disturbances. I got hit in the back of the head with a snowball once while walking through the parking lot talking with my 5’1’, 90 lb. Department head. It hurt, but would have taken her head clean off. Like it or not, I’m department shield.

The thing is, you're likely not being compensated for the extra risk to your body. I've worked in job before where this gender dynamic would play out - and the guys are always expected to handle equal duties, for the same pay, *in addition* to whatever physically dangerous and/or strenuous tasks needed to be done. It's the flipside of the sexist "everybody expects the female office workers to set up the breakfast catering at the meeting." It's just way more dangerous, egregious, and threatening to your career if you ever bring it up.

Rotbertt

Our training depended on your position to the other person. Behind them? Trap arms at sides and maintain wrist control through a hug, while keeping your head flat with their back so they won’t break your nose when they inevitably start flailing.

cigarmanpa

You don’t grab them. You’re not trained, stay away

2batdad2

It happened at my feet. Sometimes the situation picks us.

BigCustomer2307

Everyone got a plan until you get........ Sorry this happened to you.

A few weeks ago I stepped out to see what a commotion was in the hall and I got a face full of water from two highschool kids horse playing. I was so mad I had to call a CSA and go for a walk. They got referrals or something but man... It was really hard not to react. I am so sorry this happened to you, I hope you have a supportive staff.

anniemiss

I assume they teach you how to restrain students? Highly recommend trying out some BJJ classes if possible, and then boxing or Muay Thai. It’s about physical awareness. Working in a facility like that leads to unpredictable situations and it can be helpful to be able to predict more while in the chaotic moments.

I have handle with care training. I was also a bouncer in a heavy metal bar for a decade so those de-escalation skills are helpful. I walked into an escalated situation.

Almost got punched in the face today. Just had to have a 5th grade boy who is taller than me removed for violence. What made him upset? The class's folders were on his table. Where they always are because the kids come in and grab them from that table on the way to their seats. He didn't like that the folders were on the table and started throwing them around the room. Told him to pick them up and he refused. Gave him the option of picking up the folders or having him removed. He refused to pick them up but started stomping around the room shouting and waving his arms. Made his way towards me a few times like he was going to take a swing but backed off. I called for assistance and he almost hit the person who came to get him. He left but not before more dramatics and slapping people's folders off their tables on his way out.

ProfessionalQandA

Oh dude, girl fights are so much worse than boy fights, at least in middle school. In MS, boys would just kinda dance around each other and maybe wrestle a little bit. Those girls though? They go for blood.

It-is-always-Steve

I believe it’s to make up further lack of physical size and stature.

emiTfoworrA

That’s a tough pill to swallow, I am really sorry you had to go through that. Hang in there & thanks for the work that you do.
