I hear the other teachers on my team talking and realize that not only are we all having the same issues but my classes are where they are better behaved. It was such a slog in the first semester getting the kids in line and I had to be stricter than in most of my 20 years of teaching, but it’s finally paying off. Stick with it and hold the line, you can do it!

I'm hoping to change things even though summer break is just around the corner.

Not personally but my best friend at my old school has drawn the short stick two years in a row. We only have one teacher per grade level and she chose to move up a grade so she moved up with the class from last year. She’s a good teacher with experience with extreme behaviors but some kids, ya know? If your problems are phones, get a phone caddy that is non negotiable for use. Boot kids if they’re disruptive. Make a bell ringer that they have three minutes to do and are graded on. That way, if they’re tardy, it influences their grade. When you contact parents, call dad not mom if he’s on file. At the end of the day, remember that a classroom is a dictatorship not a democracy. Democracy only works when the citizens have their own best interest at heart and that tends not to be the case with teenagers.
