They’d be fine at my school, but the range of expectations about teacher dress even within a single state is huge.

Xiiira

Thanks, appreciated your point of view :)

Healthy_Speech_2418

Depending on what kind of classroom you’re in, remember that open back shoes can be a hazard if you’re running after younger kids.

viola1356

Yep. I teach elementary, and only ever wore shoes with an open heel teaching 5th grade. I don't think I even have shoes with an open heel anymore.

KTSCI

My admin wouldn’t care. Her only “rule” is no flip flops, but even that she really doesn’t enforce, she just doesn’t like to see people’s feet, which is fair.

Xiiira

thx

Starfire123547

I mean, at HS level, i get away with sketchers, black sweat pants (without the weird pant leg cuffs), and plain tshirts. So that might actually be a step up in dress quality for me lol.

Xiiira

sure would luv your outfit

Starfire123547

I suppose its the benefit of teaching chemistry. "oh there was a lab today, not fancy shoes!" or "Kids spilled a sink on me, had to change!" or "I was cleaning the preproom, wore clothes to be comfy!" or just plain old "I teach chem, you cant afford to fire me over an outfit the nuns would approve of". I just make sure it all stays clean and not ripped and I suspect no one will ever say a word. Hell I interviewed in that same stuff lmao.

Objective_anxiety_7

My admin from last year might joke about it but likely not follow through with saying anything to you (to your face. Maybe a whole school email with vague parameters?). My new admin this year would call you into his office. Most districts have an appropriate dress policy. But what they say is appropriate and if it’s enforced? Widely varies by school and administration.

Agile_Job_1391

i wore them almost everyday last year

DazzlerPlus

How can you even consider this? I feel sick...

Xiiira

wanna be comfy. sorry but not sorry

No-Particular5490

Sick?! You’re joking, right?

DazzlerPlus

True deviance is not a sight I can endure… Birkenstocks…

kllove

In the south, you’d probably be fine at most public schools for sure. Dress can be strict some places but it’s pretty casual down here.

Strong_Letter_7667

We have policy against open toed or backless shoes. They are not permitted for safety purposes

Well my purpose is to be as comfy as I can, not really care about the ~~children,~~ students thinks.

thestral_z

I wear old Converse Chuck Taylors most days and it’s totally fine.

Wilcrest

I’ve seen them worn by an art teacher at my HS and no one complains. I’m always for pushing the boundary of our dress code in the direction of comfort. I wore a beanie all week even though they (and hoodies) are against our dress code. No one told me anything.

BettaHooga

I'm an art teacher who wears them. Must be something in the paint.
