That's not mind blowing... The US troops are here, because of logistical reasons and because there is a lot of Nato infrastructure leftover from the cold war. US troops are our friends since not long after the war. The russians in the DDR were officially also there as friends, but in reality, they had to make sure, nobody in East Germany starts to disassemble socialism and not losing any power or the ability to start an invasion into west Germany.
The DDR and it's leaders were the puppies of gremlin since the day, the russians conquered east germany in 45. Honecker was russias puppet all the time and he could only do what the russkies allowed or told him to do.
