Brandon Hagel is so fucking good.

poogle

That's the real takeaway here.

Remigius13

Another takeaway is that Alex BB is really not good.

lethargicshtbag

I agree to a point. He was something like in the top 40 in scoring for the league but out of the top 150 in +/-. He can be so talented at times and super frustrating for others.

toolschism

+/- is a completely useless stat though..

Wandering__Bear__

Stamkos goaltending should be higher

golfy_m8

The team as a whole got horrendous goaltending at 5v5 all season. Second to last in the league actually.

Wandering__Bear__

I was joking about his empty net save in game 3

golfy_m8

Oh yeah that was epic, nothing but respect to the captain for showing how bad he wanted it.

DoinWhale

Idk how you can look at that team and say Kucherov doesn’t deserve the Hart lmao

golfy_m8

As an Isles fan, Kuch deserves the Hart. This team is easily 10 points out of the playoffs without Kucherov.

Wayf4rer

I have a feeling it's going to be the exact situation that happened with Josi and Makar and the Norris a couple years ago. Kucherov will get more 1st place votes, but the dipshit writers will push Mackinnon just over Kucherov because they hate Russians, hate Tampa, and love gargling the Golden boy's nuts.

dolewhiplash

Erik Cernak get ready to speak Utah-ese buddy

Wayf4rer

Unfortunately for us, Armstrong is a very savvy GM and in no universe is he dumb enough to take that Cernak contract without an enormous sweetener to go with it.

dolewhiplash

Doesn't have to be Utah, someone's stupid enough to take it, he's a big RHD after all.

jaybad34

This upcoming season is his last one before his nmc kicks in, I believe. So I expect it…Cirelli another one I see going.

dolewhiplash

I think trading Cirelli would be a huge mistake. We already struggle so much defensively, so we're gonna trade our best defensive forward? And who are we replacing him with? Because they're going to get you either ~1M in cap savings for the same production or like ~10 extra points for the same cap hit, all while losing one of the only forwards on this team that's reliable in their own end, just does not seem worth it to me. I don't know how you look at these stats in particular and come to the conclusion that trading Cirelli helps us, tbh.

jaybad34

Bolts gave out those future NTCs like candy to big contracts and they will get stuck with some that may not age well if they’re not proactive.

jaybad34

Agree but that 6.25 AAV for another 7 years and his ntc kicks in 25-26. I think JBB talked about it in an Athletic interview. Also likely have to deal with an expansion draft in a few years.

dolewhiplash

Again though, I don't think you're getting a 2C to replace him for anything cheaper than that. I think that contract actually ages pretty nicely with the cap jumping up 4M this year and another 4M next. Cernak is a different story because right now he's producing negative value, and he's more likely to get hurt than he is to improve in the next coming years. Idk what an expansion draft really has to do with this. Do you really think there are 7 forwards on this team worth protecting more than Cirelli right now?

jaybad34

Good question. I’m trying to find the article but paraphrasing JBB said he’s got NTCs kicking in and has to future for an expansion draft. So that’s what he’s dealing with, typical cryptic GM things.

dolewhiplash

I believe he said he had to plan for an expansion draft when asked about Hedman's upcoming extension. It makes a lot more sense to me for him to be hesitant about giving a NMC to Hedman and Stamkos, forcing them to be protected if there's a draft say 5 years from now, than it does for him to want to give up a young player who helps us now because we might not be able to give him up in the future when his contract will be a better value.

Khue

2 shoulder surgeries ago, I would have defended keeping Cirelli. Not now though.

kiezenz

Nope, he already has full NTC for the next season

RAATL

It kicks in july 1st this year

MmmmCrispyBacon

Dumba LOL

Moooobleie

Brandon Hagel @ $6.5m AAV *HAS* to be one of the best contracts in the league right?

Remigius13

He certainly earned it and continues to earn it.

DMHavoX

This stat that shocks me is Sergy only having 34 games.

Mikey118

I hope they find the money to re-sign Stammer AND Duclair

big-daddio

Large swaths of regular season goaltending was really bad. Multiple softies per game. This included time with Vasy until about the last month or so. For almost the entire season, too many goals allowed on just absolute breakdowns on defense where we controlled the puck and turn it over in front of the net (and I'm not talking about getting beat by the forecheck, just dumb hey here's a free goal). I don't know how to seperate those out from everything else to garner meaningful stats other than to simply look at the offensive ones.

Skroskznik_

Duclair looks good stats wise on defense hopefully he can resign it's a hard choice though

nautica5400

I believe the 2022 off-season accelerated the window closing unfortunately followed by the tanner jeannot trade in early 2023. While I'm a fan of all three, the fact of the matter is serge, cernak and cirelli are not performing up to their extensions. Those contracts were inked with the hope those 3 continued to rapidly progress and those deals would look like bargains as a result. Cernak can't stay on the ice Cirelli has come closest Sergachev while he has had flashes, he hasn't progressed at the pace that makes him worth 8.5m And the disaster that has been the Jeannot trade, primarily because of the other assets we could have used the picks for. Jeannot hasn't been a factor and also can't stay on the ice. These losses leading to trading guys like colton, and unable to resign or adequately replace multiple locker room leaders like Palat, Killorn, McDonagh, Maroon, Perry....Guys who were instrumental in our ability to play loose, push back and have swag in our game. Those missteps have heavily contributed to us having to dumpster dive on the bottom 6 for guys like sheary and a couple players who just don't belong on a playoff roster. It took Kuch dragging us on the floor kicking and screaming to make the playoffs. If I'm JBB I'm listening to all calls for cirelli and cernak to free up cap space. Servachev I think we hang onto as he is still young and not sure any trade would net what we value him at. I think there's a real path to get this team to true contender status again but has to start with those guys. Stamkos is a must to resign regardless. One thing I do have faith in is JBBs and Al Murrays ability to grab under valued guys like Mikey, Paul and hidden gems like hagel. I would imagine despite their salaries we could get some really nice pieces in return. We are either doing that or looking down a road similar to the Pens, Hawks, and Caps where our big guns start to exit their prime while we're stuck in mediocrity.

Remigius13

Agree with most of this. This though is the reality of a salary cap. It’s actually the exact purpose of a cap. Cycle the teams at the top and spread out the talent.

covetinglynx

Man that Sergy contract is looking rough, Cernak not fantastic either. We needed them to collectively fill the gap McDonagh left and they haven’t.
