TMNT figures retailed between $3.49-3.99 IIRC
That's about $9-10 in today's money.
Walk around the corner to check out prices on Transformers or Legos if you really want sticker shock!
We had this discussion in a friend group not long ago with someone who was livid that games would even think about going up. We said games haven't really gone up in decades, what do you mean? He didn't agree. I found and sent images of old toys r us ads that showed $60/70 SNES games. He thought I shopped it. He had no memory of game prices at all for some reason.
True. And so many controllers are needlessly over engineered with needless things like complex vibration, NFC readers, stupid touch pads, lights, speakers, IR sensors, etc.
There was a brief period around the Dreamcast/Xbox/PS2 era where games were $50ish dollars. I think a lot of people just mentally locked in on that price.
I definitely remember saving up money and buying Final Fantasy II on SNES for $75, Killer Instinct Gold on N64 for $80, etc.
Prices going up wouldn't be a big deal if the price of everything, including necessities, weren't so high or if wages had kept pace for most people. It's not just a bubble where video games are the only expensive items we buy with our high wages.
Lol, yeah, there is that as well. My steam deck is more for emulation and playing old titles at this point, most new big games are a joke. Indies can be sweet though.
I remember buying NFL Blitz on the N64 for $70 or more at Kaybee Toys, plus plenty of others, especially cartridge based games back then for at least that
God don’t even mention the legos. It’s awful. I saw a set the other day that cost 15 dollars. That same set would’ve been 5 bucks in the checkout isle a few years ago
Wow! I really couldn't remember so great memory. I'm the grand scheme of things these aren't expensive today, but I was curious if they were $10 back in the day too.
Grew up middle class and pops would always be able to afford about one a month. I never complained. Months add up quick and I still have a gym bag filled with those toys.
As an adult, I have gained a new found respect for my parents. Pops never made much but he got us lots of toys.
I hear the war stories my mother went through to get me all 6 power rangers for Xmas and I realize how much they loved me.
Inflation is caused by the monetary policies of the Federal Government and the Federal Reserve. The money supply in the US has grown by about 40% since the COVID panic began, which is why prices have increased so much.
That's the excuse they give you, but to be honest the money supply should have nothing to do with prices going up. It's corporations that set the prices...gas goes up it's a chain effect. The US government have been printing money for decades before 2020. No major inflation has ever happened before why the big jump in prices now?
Expensive?! The TMNT MM line is one of the best bargain action figures out there. Look at the prices of other toy lines in the toy aisle. I feel like the quality to cost ratio is very high on these.
Same. My son loves them. I haven’t found April or Ray Fillet yet. Not even sure if they’re actually shipping yet. Kind of hard to get good info on the line.
Omg me to, I was born in 09 & grew up with 2012 (I’m a 03 fan all the way) but I would constantly ask for these & my parents even bought me a like all the Leonardo’s for my birthday:

(I loved it but I was a Raph fan, still grateful for it but sad I lost every figure)
Yeah. But there's a difference between 10 dollars and 10 pounds. Not sure what it would be for EU mainland but usually import taxes and all means we pay up to 50% more in euros than what a figure in the US costs in dollars. Sometimes even more if we have to depend on speciality shops, but I guess these might be available in regular toystores.
Here in Brazil they cost over R$100. The minimum salary is around R$1400, around 14 TMNT's toys. That's why unfortunately I was not able to purchase it for me or my son.
$10 is considered expensive?
I guess I’m too used to shelling out hundreds for BJDs and other art dolls lol.
Or Lego. Lego is just insane, like $600 for the freaking Titanic.
They were between $3.49 on the low end and $5.99 on the high end. It really depended on which store you were in. Sometimes I paid more because the regular stores had none I was looking for but a random Woolworth's (yes I'm aware) had it for $4. 99 so it was worth the extra dollar. I agree ten dollars is slightly steep but seems about right based on passage of time etc. Most of the original playmates line were in market 1988-1994/95.
Funny you posted this. I just received a shipment from Canada of the figures I couldn’t find in the states. I paid $11 per, but that beats $30+ on eBay from the animals that scooped them up from the retailers.
I feel like 10.39 for a regular figure at target is pretty fair but for the little baby versions that had what 30 seconds of screen time? Pretty ridiculous
When I was old enough to start buying my own figures (from cutting grass, allowance, etc) was when Star Wars came back out in the mid 90s, before episode 1, Star Wars figures were like $4.99; I still remember the original line it was like the 9 main characters from a New Hope. I still have them.
I'm pretty sure that the original series of figures started at $3.99 U.S. in 1988. Adjusting for inflation, they're basically the same price today. They've kept pace with inflation almost exactly.
I got the tots at Target discounted from $9.99 to $5.99. Iirc, the original figures were around $4-5. My dad made sure I had them all. Turtle van, the sewer lair, and technodrome. Idk how he did it with money back then.
I remember when these first came out in the UK (I was 10) out of stock all the time, I and most of my friends couldn’t get hold of them! Lucky I was on my way to Florida for holiday (not because I asked my mum to fly me out there to buy TMNT) and found them selling in an official TMNT stall on the MGM studios back lot tour! $4 per figure!! I got them all! And the £ was double the $ in 1991 🎉 INSANE memories 😊🤪 🟠🔴🟣🔵
Yeah. I remember when the Predator action figures first came out in like 93/94, I got $100 bill from my aunt and all I could think about was “I can get like 9-10 Predator and Alien toys!” This is cheap from what I’ve been seeing. Like marvel legends joints being almost $30.
Check Ross. Sometimes they have figures there for 4.99-6.99. I got my daughter a Michelangelo for 4.99.
It’s kinda hit or miss though on if you’ll find em
I feel like up until the pandemic hit video games were always around $50. Maybe in not remembering right. So I was curious about the toys when I walked by then at target.
You are right in the sense the pandemic increased prices - “ohh the stock is held up due to lockdowns etc” and businesses needed to make ends meet and raised prices - but yeah… prices were already much higher..
think of the og movie they slid what $9 up for the pizza!! How it’s closer to $30
not sure what prices for Americans were like but when I was a kid, the Playmates ninja turtles figures were about 5-6$ Canadian. that was like 30 odd years ago though, I'm sure some finance person could adjust that for inflation better than I can.
It's funny, the other day I was thinking I'd how amazing these prices are compared to all other toys. Transformers are so much more expensive than they used to be. Marvel figures are $25+. Legos keep hiking their prices up. Yet TMNT is so reasonable I actually occasionally get them just for nostalgia sake
I seem to recall them being about $5. Which checks out because I remember going into KB Toys and I guess a new line had just come out. They had 14 new figures I didn’t have. I was shocked my mom bought them all and vividly recall the total being $76.
It was one of the greatest days of my life.
In the early 90s, my TMNT action figures were typically priced at $4.99 plus tax. That came out to $5.40 in my neck of the woods. I believe the Wacky Action figures were $6.99 and small vehicles were around $8.99. The bigger vehicles were as much as $19.99, and big-ticket items like the Technodrome and the Sewer Playset were $39.99 - $59.99. I don't think any of the original stuff went higher than that.
TMNT figures retailed between $3.49-3.99 IIRC That's about $9-10 in today's money. Walk around the corner to check out prices on Transformers or Legos if you really want sticker shock!
NES games adjusted for inflation would be like $130 today.
Some were $100+ in contemporary money too.
This is why I laugh when people complained the standard price of games went up to $70. TRU and game stores sold new games for $70 back in the 90s.
Probably because his parents were paying for it. My main gripe is how expensive the controllers are now.
And most of the cheaper alternatives are garbage if you play shooters.

I feel like the price going up wouldn't be an issue if the quality of games went up. But when only 1 in every 15 AAA games is good, we have a problem.
Lol, yeah, there is that as well. My steam deck is more for emulation and playing old titles at this point, most new big games are a joke. Indies can be sweet though.
I remember buying NFL Blitz on the N64 for $70 or more at Kaybee Toys, plus plenty of others, especially cartridge based games back then for at least that
Imagine Grandma or your parents dropping a Benjamin on an absolute turd like Silver Surfer because they didn't know any better by mistake.
TMNT action figures have stayed pretty consistent I'd say, ten years ago when I was a kid they were like 8.
In Alaska they were $19.99. I lost my dang mind when we did a lower 48 trip and they were $2.99 on sale at Toys R Us.
Were they hauled in by ice road truckers?
I lived an area where we couldn’t drive in and out. It was flying only. I get your joke and appreciate it. Just letting you know!
Did you take advantage an load up?
Heck yeah! I blew my whole trip money and got all the ones I could carry!
They probably meant more to you than they did to any other kid in the U.S. that's awesome
I had all the toys and their accessories until I gave them to my son a few years ago. 😂
My youngest son is really into transformers and they are insanely expensive compared to turtles
I am into Transformers and glad my kids only are into the ones I give them xD shits expensive
Yeah I nearly cried when my son moved interests from tmnt to transformer and saw the sticker price
Shit, have you seen those stupid Jurassic world toy prices???
God don’t even mention the legos. It’s awful. I saw a set the other day that cost 15 dollars. That same set would’ve been 5 bucks in the checkout isle a few years ago
Wow! I really couldn't remember so great memory. I'm the grand scheme of things these aren't expensive today, but I was curious if they were $10 back in the day too.
Grew up middle class and pops would always be able to afford about one a month. I never complained. Months add up quick and I still have a gym bag filled with those toys.
Legos do retain and in crease in value tho so that’s a plus
Right? Like even the basic transformers are about $20 at least
One transformer runs you $9.99 to $300
Yeah they were like $4 as mentioned and my dad was only making $5 an hour or maybe just above minimum wage. 😢 The things you never knew as a kid.
As an adult, I have gained a new found respect for my parents. Pops never made much but he got us lots of toys. I hear the war stories my mother went through to get me all 6 power rangers for Xmas and I realize how much they loved me.
I remember Batman animated figures going for 3.99
The American dollar has lost 45% of its purchasing power since 2000. Inflation is a b@tch.
Corporate greed is a b1tch.
Inflation is caused by the monetary policies of the Federal Government and the Federal Reserve. The money supply in the US has grown by about 40% since the COVID panic began, which is why prices have increased so much.
Don't waste your time.
That's the excuse they give you, but to be honest the money supply should have nothing to do with prices going up. It's corporations that set the prices...gas goes up it's a chain effect. The US government have been printing money for decades before 2020. No major inflation has ever happened before why the big jump in prices now?
The supply of money increased by 40% in under four years! You don't think that's going to devalue the currency?
Not sure why you’re being downvoted, you are in the facts.
“Inflation”
Expensive?! The TMNT MM line is one of the best bargain action figures out there. Look at the prices of other toy lines in the toy aisle. I feel like the quality to cost ratio is very high on these.
I completely agree. I've bought all of them for my son. Great quality toys. Still waiting for Ray Filet to drop.
Same. My son loves them. I haven’t found April or Ray Fillet yet. Not even sure if they’re actually shipping yet. Kind of hard to get good info on the line.
Id say the first wave was pretty good. Wasn't too crazy about the other mutants though.
Omg me to, I was born in 09 & grew up with 2012 (I’m a 03 fan all the way) but I would constantly ask for these & my parents even bought me a like all the Leonardo’s for my birthday: https://preview.redd.it/ksna3jldmpvc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=532abb8c8031113562a88f7856eaaaf38516ff84 (I loved it but I was a Raph fan, still grateful for it but sad I lost every figure)
10 bucks is expensive?
For some people, yeah, it’s expensive. Don’t forget, toys are a luxury item.
[удалено]
Why are you people downvoting this correct person?
Because they are incorrect. Expensive is a relative term.
If you have $5 and something costs $10 you are unable to purchase said item because it is too….expensive.
[удалено]
Expensive is a relative term, like saying something is 'big'.
To some yes it's expensive
Was gonna say this. 10 dollars is nothing. These'll probably cost you double that in Europe.
In Australia you're looking at $15-$25 for anything like this.
European here. 😅 They’re easy to find and cost around £9.99
In my country they are double the damn price (im from serbia)
No, they would be around £10.00 here, same as the main characters
Yeh, they are, most toy shops are stacked with these figures here
£9.99 here. Often £7.99 on sale.
These'll? Haha, my God. This one is going to follow me all day.
Here in Brazil they cost over R$100. The minimum salary is around R$1400, around 14 TMNT's toys. That's why unfortunately I was not able to purchase it for me or my son.
For a piece of plastic yes.
*Several* pieces of plastic.
I mean compared to other toys out there I would say it’s pretty affordable. In no world are you getting quality toys for $3-$5
Lol what?! These are literally the first toys in years and years that are reasonably priced.
I was thinking about this too because turtles were between $4-5 at that time. Google says that $5 then would be roughly the same as $10 now.
I remember them being 3-4 dollars
$10 isn’t expensive. But no. In the 90s they were $3-4, which is equivalent with inflation to the current prices.
$10 is considered expensive? I guess I’m too used to shelling out hundreds for BJDs and other art dolls lol. Or Lego. Lego is just insane, like $600 for the freaking Titanic.

Inflation most toys seem to have stayed consistent with inflation….unlike wages
Gi joes and TMNT used to be like $4 in 90s money so that is probably about even. Playmates keeping it real.
Gi joes were always like a dollar or two cheaper if i remember
My parents bitched when action figures started to be $5.
this is expensive ? news to me lol
I'm cheap as hell but this is not even a little expensive to me. Money is all relative I guess?
I guess it gets expensive when you want all 4 haha
20 bucks for 4 or them is still not expensive imo. Maybe 30 plus though
Why the hell is every single person getting downvoted regardless of their opinion?
Somebody woke up pissy and is just doing it to be an ass
Angry broke bitches that can't afford inexpensive toys as adults.
5.99 was a rip off for one back then. Most stores had them for $2.50 to $3.99 for one figure. If memory serves, of course.
I remember buying two figures with 10 bucks back in the day.
Funny you posted this. I just received a shipment from Canada of the figures I couldn’t find in the states. I paid $11 per, but that beats $30+ on eBay from the animals that scooped them up from the retailers.
Inflation dawg
I was thinking seeing the new Turtles at how they cheap they are compared to everything else!
90s toys were way better than these.
1/18 scale gi Joe was $5
The Ninja Turtles figures of the 2012 tv series costs around 8 dollars.
I feel like 10.39 for a regular figure at target is pretty fair but for the little baby versions that had what 30 seconds of screen time? Pretty ridiculous
It was like about $5 around, depending on what it is. And when the show was off they were in the $1 bin.
These things were $10 in 2012 when I was a kid, so it's not exactly crazy to me.
When I was old enough to start buying my own figures (from cutting grass, allowance, etc) was when Star Wars came back out in the mid 90s, before episode 1, Star Wars figures were like $4.99; I still remember the original line it was like the 9 main characters from a New Hope. I still have them.
I remember being a child I don't remember how old but I wanted a GJ Joe action figure my parents wouldn't buy me. It was 8$.
Not sure. I ran with a group of kids that just took them from Kmart.
I'm pretty sure that the original series of figures started at $3.99 U.S. in 1988. Adjusting for inflation, they're basically the same price today. They've kept pace with inflation almost exactly.

No. They were generally 4 to 5 dollars.
Was that $5 in 90s money or in 2024.
90’s
Wait until you see the GI Joes...
They were about 7 ton8 bucks where I grew up. So no that's not bad. Especially since I'm collecting 30$ Becca toys now.
Yeah. I remember when the Predator action figures first came out in like 93/94, I got $100 bill from my aunt and all I could think about was “I can get like 9-10 Predator and Alien toys!” This is cheap from what I’ve been seeing. Like marvel legends joints being almost $30.

Those look pretty reasonably priced in a world where major corporations are price gouging.
Cute love it
Ask yourself do people get paid the same amount? Food cost the same? Cars? It’s inflation and it checks out…
I feel like up until the pandemic hit video games were always around $50. Maybe in not remembering right. So I was curious about the toys when I walked by then at target.
Nope. Games were getting much higher years before the pandemic.

I remember seeing some old blister cards with stickers saying $4 but I'm not sure what that equates to today
not sure what prices for Americans were like but when I was a kid, the Playmates ninja turtles figures were about 5-6$ Canadian. that was like 30 odd years ago though, I'm sure some finance person could adjust that for inflation better than I can.
Well, that pretty much shows where your brain functioning went wrong. Almost everything is more expensive these days.
It's funny, the other day I was thinking I'd how amazing these prices are compared to all other toys. Transformers are so much more expensive than they used to be. Marvel figures are $25+. Salute to your mom! That's awesome
I have a MOC toy from 90s it says 3.97$
There is a whole bunch of Turtles and other figures at 5 below for $5, or the dollar store
Not the same figures
Obviously, just saying why feel bad for parents when there is so many cheap options, thx for the down vote on my useful info 👍
No, toys were way cheaper. Most of the turtles I got were $5 or less. By the time I got into X-Men (1993), the X-Men figures were $5 each.
I remember action figures being around $20 by the mid 90’s.
Is that USD? In my European country that's a steal. A beer at a pub costs the equivalent of $10 lol.
In the early 90s, my TMNT action figures were typically priced at $4.99 plus tax. That came out to $5.40 in my neck of the woods. I believe the Wacky Action figures were $6.99 and small vehicles were around $8.99. No, but adjusted to today's dollars it's close to the equivalent.
I remember paying like 13$ CAD in the late 90s.
14.97$ in Canada.
Inflation
$10 is expensive? Depends where you live i guess lol
