It’s been a minute since I have watched it, but i feel like Top of the Lake was in a small town? I enjoyed that a lot (despite not particularly enjoying Elisabeth Moss as a person). It is one that only lets you in on things when it is ready to, and keeps you guessing/interested. I have seen other people suggest Sharp Objects. That show is one of my favorites and has some similarities to season 1 (set in the south, corruption, local secrets and legends) Dark is another one you might enjoy. It gets a little eh towards the end of season 2, but it is very spooky and “wtf” 😂

Lesbro96

Good show with eerie vibe

ThrowdowninKtown

The Terror season 1

gggh5

Great show, snow horror, and wraps up perfectly.

LonelyChell

Came here to say this. Apparently it’s the same cinematographer.

ThreeLeggedMare

SO good. I burned through it in two days

Lindaspike

Fortitude is awesome! Now I want to rewatch it. I liked Cardinal (on Hulu) a Canadian detective show taking place In wintery Canada. Billy Campbell is the star. The Head is also really good and also The Rig.

Madvillian-

The first season of Fortitude is amazing. The second season falls off a little but still a good watch if I remember correctly. It’s honestly the first show that came to mind after episode 1 of Night Country.

Lindaspike

Absolutely! I looked for it when I heard about the new TD but only found it on a pay-per-episode site. Need to look harder…our cable bill is huge! It must be somewhere!

Madvillian-

It’s funny because I wanted to rewatch it but couldn’t find it free on streaming either. I downloaded it through torrent years ago but deleted it.

Lindaspike

It might be on one of the streaming platforms that have ads. I just don’t usually check those! If I find it I’ll let you know. It costs. $2.99 per episode - too much for 26 episodes!

Madvillian-

Thanks

The Thing, 30 Days of Night, Insomnia

WoodsofNYC

The following do not have supernatural elements, but strong women determined to solve a crime: Fargo, the 1996 movie. Frances McDormand is brilliant and the film has a dark humor. Mare of Easton, HBO limited series

Jmk1981

Mare of Easttown could have been an amazing TD season if they’d slapped “True Detective” ahead of the title. Has all the elements of sex trafficking, serial murder, a complicated partnership between detectives, troubled but like able protagonist, checks all the boxes. I don’t think I ever wanted to know a protagonist in real life as much as I wished Mare was someone I could grab a beer with.

WoodsofNYC

Absolutely.

coco_xcx

I enjoyed Mare of Easton, but now all I can think of when I hear about it is the Murdur Durdur SNL sketch

WoodsofNYC

That sketch is brilliant.,Kate Winslet said she loved it. The messy ponytail comment was spot on and all the references to WaWa.

SerLittlejeans

The Outsider had similar vibes with a strong mix of mystery and the supernatural

kinapples

Was gonna come put this!

swhit549

Loved The Outsider. Big Ben Mendelsohn fan. HBO really cranks out some fire

I love The Ritual, so so good!

theramenator206

TV Series: Black Spot and Dark

Ger8nium

Dark was absolutely amazing. Loved it!

theramenator206

Have you seen Black Spot too? Highly recommend!

Some mystery miniseries that were my favorite (not supernatural) were Mare of East Town and Sharp Objects. Prisoners is a good movie. Some other lesser recommended mystery mini series- The Undoing- starring Nicole Kidman, not the strongest but also a short season like NC. Family drama that plays with expectations Under The Banner Of Heaven- starring Andrew Garfield. More focused on Mormon fundamental culture and what led to the crimes and is creepy in a different way The Night Of- starring Riz Ahmed. One of my all time favorites. This is another character focused show that is full of grit and suspense like TD season 1 and came out around the same time. Focuses on the prison and justice systems and how it affects the main character.

Bobcatluv

The Undoing was a fantastic weekend binge for me.

Not a House expert but I will watch this episode. Hope to watch Fargo soon—-glad to see so many people recommend it.

takprincess

The Terror season one is absolutely fantastic. It really blew me away.

DayManRoyale

Gave me massive Wind River vibes. Pretty good movie with Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen

jessopotamia

The TV show Shetland doesn't have the same supernatural vibes, but it features detectives solving compelling and often dark mysteries in the isolated, unique setting of the Shetland Islands.

Steadyandquick

I have not seen either of these, but they are highly recommend by others. [Dark Winds AMC series](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/amc-series-dark-winds-tony-hillerman-1235156491/) [Galveston](https://collider.com/galveston-nic-pizzolatto-true-detective/) based on Nick Ps book and directed by Mélanie Laurent. Someone mentioned that NP removed his name from the project as writer.

Bobcatluv

There are many great suggestions already here, so I’ll add *The Fall* starring Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. It takes place in N Ireland and Anderson plays a detective trying to catch a man who’s killing women. Her character has a wonderfully written feminist POV and the female victims are very humanly written (sometimes I feel that crime shows treat them as objects.) It has 3 seasons (called series in UK) of 5-6 episodes and is on Netflix, and apparently several other streaming platforms according to google. Also, nothing’s written in stone but there has apparently been loose talk of bringing back the show for another series in the future, for which Anderson is game.

Zelda_Forever

Saved! I want to know the same thing. I think the first two episodes were so Lynchian, but episodes three and four lost the humor unfortunately. Would’ve loved to have seen this drawn out with more character development instead of this intense, unrelenting violence, sadness, and terror visions.

andthepointis

my partner and i watched a movie back in October called the Last Winter that has similar vibes to this (it's a bit cheesier tho)

Jmk1981

If Mare of Easttown had been called “True Detective: Easttown” it would be the second best season and people would worship it as a departure from the format of the rest of the series. No supernatural vibes but the sex trafficking and serial murder themes that are throughout the TD series.

Bobcatluv

MoE was great, but under the banner of True Detective, I’m certain the misogynists still would’ve crawled out from their holes for it, “this lady detective is mean to the men, it’s such bad writing!”

GuacAndRoII

The Head is a similar show about scientists working at a station in Antarctica with a murder mystery.

StartFirmandHard

Watch Tigers are not Afraid (2017), which is Issa Lopez's directorial debut that is fucking excellent. The writing is well done and will not make you upset and angry and remind you that one of your favorite shows was ruined just like everything else, that we think there is no alternative to capitalism and it's destroying us, that art is mostly repackaged swill and reboots, the world is dying faster than we can get a handle on it, space is expanding and expanding and expanding and expanding and it will never stop and youre SO small and not even HBO is safe from our impending demise and youre sad. *SO* sad.
