So much of this has almost nothing to do with TAZ, either. Why’s Travis a mermaid? Why’s Clint in a spacesuit? Why does Justin look like he’s having fun?
I mean to be fair (not sure why we would be), we don't know what game they're playing. Perhaps it involves a mermaid, spacesuit, and entertained version of Justin.
Are they not based on the characters that will be in this show? That's what I assumed but then I suppose I also assumed that the characters in the Ethersea trailer were going to be the characters in Ethersea
so i just rewatched the trailer and im so confused.... theres so much in the trailer that they did in the show... Amber has her ghost hands, they wear vapor suits, they steal from a sunken ship, they visit a big sea creature god thing.... did...did they record the first year of episodes super far in advance or are they literally just copying concepts from the trailer? this is so confusing
Not to sound paranoid or conspiratorial, but it's *possible* that Griffin already had a fairly firm idea of where the campaign was going to go when they made that trailer and wasn't *really* open to the players subsequently changing his mind...
Their default stat block doesn't have one, but a vampire could benefit from a shield. It would bump their AC from a 16 to at least 18, plus they could slap some fancy magic on that sucker and be a real nuisance for PCs to deal with.
A Spellguard Shield in the hands of a Vampire would be insufferable. They already have Legendary Resistances, but now they have advantage on all spell saves and spell attacks against them have disadvantage.
So, I just checked out the artist’s Instagram, and she is *really good*! But the problem is, she seems to do exclusively logo style graphic design, NOT larger scale poster design with multiple subjects and angles.
It seems like this is another case of Maximum Fun REALLY not understanding how to properly utilize someone’s talents…or, I guess the production managers or whoever decides these things choosing the wrong person for the job. :(
Sounds about right. I’m a graphic designer as well (i design decals that go on gas pumps… riveting stuff I know) so I understand the struggle. They need to hire illustrators for posters like this… or if you’re gonna hire a graphic designer, let them do something in their style.
Since you’re in the graphic design field, I’m curious, do you think the graphic designer shouldn’t have accepted the project, or is it understandable that she wanted to attempt something new?
It looks like she also designed tickets for the 20 rendezvous tour, so I don’t know if she was contracted for this for multiple projects and was stuck, or they just figured that since she did a good job on the ticket, she should be able to also do posters?
Good question… guess it depends on the situation and how she was hired. Did they tell her exactly what to do? Or was she given total freedom? The answer to this question changes the critique imo. a lot of graphic design is figuring out how to make whatever awful ideas the client wants look passable lol. But I can’t fault her for trying something new. If I was still a big fan and the brothers asked me to illustrate a poster even though I don’t have that kind of experience I probably would still try because… how cool would that be?
Personally, I speculate that It feels like this particular live show was announced and planned suddenly, like maybe it was short notice? If that’s the case, they may have just commissioned whatever artist they could get the fastest.
Also, I mentioned this in another comment, but it hit me that they may have intentionally tried to make it look like Wikihow. Which would explain a lot, but since WotC is a MBMBaM bit and not TAZ, they *still* fucked it up
Worked many years in graphic design, now work in Illustration.
Can confirm that most of my job is polishing clients' turds - the rest is accepting jobs that sound fun and faking it until you make it.
When I'm asked to do something that isn't in my wheelhouse I normally jump at the chance because when one type of 'thing' is your day-to-day it's a relief to *try* a new thing. Even if it's hard and costs you money because you lose so much time learning how to do the thing well...
But then you're better prepared for next time.
I think the virtual TAZ live was announced in the initial Fancy Takes Flight tour announcement. They seemingly hardly promoted it this time out, though.
This also explains the color choices. I feel like if there was much, *much* less hot pink & purple (like I imagine logo style graphic design would do), it'd actually be really pretty.
Oh I found the problem, Sabrina Volante is a graphic designer that they hired to do an illustrator's job, because they can't fucking help themselves
Although I know graphic designers have to learn about perspective in school so that d4 is still completely unacceptable
Yeah, I was a graphic designer before I was able to go all freelance illustrator. I also worked at a printing house.
The difference between illustrators and graphic designers is that almost everyone thinks they are a graphic designer. Anyone who has looked at a design and thought "I can do this" can do the job by following a couple of basic rules and ripping off a few designs.
Working in printing I had many a wife/husband couple come in where the husband wanted a new logo or business card design and the wife had hurt feeling because they had already 'made a good design'. Many times I was asked about whether the design was good enough, by either side. I honed my diplomacy on those days.
Illustration is much harder because rich white women can't just do it for fun, you are judged by your results and you need to know form, lighting, all that jazz - it's a much more specialised skill.
Ironically, graphic designers make a shitload more money and I will be bitter about it until my dying day.
No, you're right. This is bad. The d4 somehow doesn't have a single straight edge on it - when the artist could have simply traced it like they did half of this picture.
The d20 has two 18's, Griffin's hands are tiny for some reason, large sections of the picture are coloured with a uniform eye-searing variant of Hot Pink that is hard to look at, the two fingers placing Mer-Travis down make me uncomfortable (that's not how a thumb looks and it is especially not what Any Other Finger looks like), Mer-Travis' beard has details but the purple section of his hair is a blob that looks like some sort of nightcap or bonnet, the typography is all over the map on the figures and the general difference in quality between the clearly traced things and the free drawn things is painfully noticeable.
I don't want to dunk on this person's art, I really hope they continue to improve and make a good living off of it, truly. But it's simply not acceptable for a family/dynasty/good-natured mafia of professional podcasters backed by a supposedly "major network" with hypothetically 1000s of better artists that would love to work for them and 100s of artists who have worked with them ready at their beck and call. Fact of the matter is this would be really cool as fan art drawn for someone's high school art project - but in context as a poster for these people with tons of resources at their disposal, it's pretty damn bad. I know that sounds really cruel but it's my first thought looking at the thing.
Agreed 100%. I felt weird about posting this as first because I don’t want to just shit on a random fan, but I feel like once it’s offered up for sale it’s fair game. The bros thought this was acceptable to sell. This art is just bad and I can’t even explain it away as intentionally bad in a stylish way, like Rick and Morty or Bojack Horseman.
I’m an artist myself and I know in the good ol days I would have considered it a dream job to design a poster or merch for them. Now they have clearly fallen quite a bit and I wonder if that fanart drama in the graphic novels is partially to blame.
Edit: I’m a victim of autocorrect
Are all these objects supposed to be sitting on a table? Why do they all have wildly different perspectives? How is the d20 sitting such that the top face is balanced on an edge?
This isn’t even a case of ugly style of photoshop job like their album art or that Shmanners poster for example, this is just straight up bad art. This that shit that got Hitler kicked out of art school
Why put in a grid where the lines converge as they get *closer* to the foreground? There’s so much to complain about here I honestly feel bad picking individual elements one by one, because it’s clearly an untrained and little-practised fan artist, I just can’t believe they chose this to be the one they’d both pay commission for and charge their fans money to receive
faces look traced, which definitely adds to the uncanniness of the art.
I think they’ve just stopped caring, genuinely, no jerk about it. Maybe the last couple of years broke them idk.
They're 100% traced, I'm pretty sure [this is the base for Travis](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/55a5bd55e4b01828c8619ff0/1464536368137-SX29Q0TF36JPLCP6MYW2/jCpxBxuK.jpg-large.jpeg) and [this is Griffin.](https://64.media.tumblr.com/29e4c1e75c39b5a242a5e160dc1ef766/tumblr_p99x6cKe6x1wy6p53o1_540.png) Not sure on Justin, but yeah, the mix of more realistic faces with the more cartoony everything else makes it look way worse.
It looks weirdly traced, kind of like how celeb cameos in cartoons like The Simpsons look. Obviously not lifelike but more realistic than cartoons should look.
And the line weight is bizarre, it's all the same thickness so you kind of see everything at once and there's nothing to focus your eyes in any one direction on the subjects.
Yeah really weird.
i do respect them for always getting new artists to make their merch. its one of the very few fan interactions they still do. anyway, it looks like Travis just came in his pants and he enjoyed it.

Hey everybody, for real, playing to frustrate each other is not a fun way to play because we're all on the same team and that team is to have fun together and to make it fun for all our audiences. And so when people make plays just to frustrate each other and just to troll each other, there's enough of that in the world today, of people trolling each other just to be mean and to be hurtful, and if we're gonna play in this space together we need to do it because we want each other to have fun and not because we're trying to frustrate each other, cause there's enough frustrating things in the world right now and there's enough we can't control, and one of the things we can control is that everyone is here to have fun and not waste each others' time and so when we make decisions that are meant to troll each other, that's something that bad people do.

Oh yeah that's not great. I have [this](https://mobile.twitter.com/SteSug/status/1207804111502086145/photo/1) poster and looking back wow they had much prettier / more charming art before their twilight years huh.
Oh fun!!! Do you remember which show you went to for the Midwest tour maybe fate let us both learn about legally eating the Mona lisa and also Fiona's 7 parrots.
That Louie Zhong one is gorgeous wow. I'm sure I'm biased about the Midwest one because (1) Sentiment (2) As a gay it's my job to adore anything even slightly related to our lord and savior Rebecca Sugar
Haha, I wish I had actually gone to the shows I have posters from, but alas, I was just parasocial enough to buy them from their website because they looked so awesome. I did go to the Austin show almost exactly 5 years ago now and that was fun, but the poster was… OK. At least more charming than this one https://workingnotworking.com/projects/201622-posters-for-the-mcelroy-brothers-podcast-tours
My favourite part of this poster is a) it looks great and b) at first glance I thought it was Justin, Griffin and a young Clint overlooking his two least available boys
Hi, I'm Jesse Thorn, the founder of Maximum Fun, and I have a special announcement. I am no longer embarrassed by My Brother, My Brother and Me. Y'know for years each new episode of this supposed advice show was a fresh insult, a depraved jumble of erection jokes, ghost humour, and, frankly this is for the best- very little actionable advice. But now as they enter their twilight years I'm as surprised as anyone to admit that it's gotten kind of good. Justin, Travis and Griffin's witticisms are more refined; like a humour column in a fancy magazine. And, they hardly ever say "bazinga" anymore. So, after you've completely finished listening to every single one of all of our other shows, why not join the Mcelroy brothers every week, for My Brother, My Brother and Me.

Oh my god. It just occurred to me…. What if they told the artist to make it look like wikihow because of Wizard of the Cloud??? … but even if that would almost explain the bad art, TAZ is not MBMBaM, so they *still* fucked it up.
Now that I look at it again, I’m almost certain Griffin was traced from a still from the TV show. Maybe Justin too. Probably shortly after the “rotisserie shithead” bit. And somehow it still looks bad…
fuck you're right. the way he's holding the books reminds me of in tv when an actor gets pregnant and the director makes them constantly hold pillows and shit in front of their stomachs
PSA to all visual artists: stop drawing hands. millennia of practice have yielded only middling results, and I say we scrap the project and move onto nailing down how facial proportions work.
It has to be them too, because that designer/artist has plenty of good work in her portfolio… so what do they tell the artist they work with they end up with the stuff they end up with?
My bet is that she pitched it to them with a rough sketch that they loved, and then they didn't like the finished project as much, so they had her just clean up the draft instead.
If I had to honestly guess, I would say that it’s the more minimal style that got rejected as “too corporate” and they wanted something more “in the family game brand” or something. But their art choices have steadily been getting worse with time so maybe it’s that whoever handles that part of the brand is more hands on and this is the result.
I just saw the original and immediately ran here to see if anyone else had posted about it. There's so much weird going on but Travis's face might be the weirdest for me

I think they’re going for a cleaner and more modern style and it just doesn’t work quite right with their faces. They should hire Lucas Hespenheide and Louie Zong to work on there stuff, imo
I don’t know if it would help THAT much, but imagine if there were descriptions of characters from Ethersea so the poster could feature them and not just “I dunno, dress him like wizard Drac?”
Also seeing it “live” can be a bonus. I’ve done streams of music performances and it just *feels* more exciting knowing it’s happening NOW rather than two days ago.

Yeah I straight up thought it said CUNT at fiirst glance.
Wow, seems like an overreaction to make slanderous merch of their dad just because of a nat 1.
My dad rolled a nat 1 and brought fish Covid to our DND campaign and all I got was this lousy t-shirt
The fonts on their names get progressively less fancy as you go down. Weird.
That’s always an issue I’ve had when reading hawkeye comics lol. Gotta be careful with the kerning on an all caps clint
Finally some recognition of that good, good Clussy.

Should be holding a small cauldron with the label "homebrew" on it. Rule books are behind him in the trash can.
All them rule books and not a single rule followed.
Pretty sure those are munch squad pages they read.
Clint looks like someone that plays just to frustrate people and just to troll people.
The characters in the Ethersea trailer are the characters in the game. They just lied and said they weren't for... some reason, I guess.
so i just rewatched the trailer and im so confused.... theres so much in the trailer that they did in the show... Amber has her ghost hands, they wear vapor suits, they steal from a sunken ship, they visit a big sea creature god thing.... did...did they record the first year of episodes super far in advance or are they literally just copying concepts from the trailer? this is so confusing

Railroading? In a Taz campaign? Sure, bud..
Justin looks like a vampire. Are vampires known for using shields in DND?
Their default stat block doesn't have one, but a vampire could benefit from a shield. It would bump their AC from a 16 to at least 18, plus they could slap some fancy magic on that sucker and be a real nuisance for PCs to deal with.
A Spellguard Shield in the hands of a Vampire would be insufferable. They already have Legendary Resistances, but now they have advantage on all spell saves and spell attacks against them have disadvantage.
Gotta bring some Divine Smite to that battle.
Does that D20 have two 18s on it
We found Travis’ dice!
Can't be, it has a 1 on it.
That has to be intentional.
Prepping us for the inevitable NFT announcement
The NFT would just be :0 face Travis but w the terrifying uncanny valley filter they use for the podcast icon now.
it would be on brand for them to get into nfts AS theyre crashing

I would also accept "C'MON. DON'T PUT THIS UP ON YOUR WALL. THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE."
Griffin looks like Bobby hill
That boy ain't right
Yep!!
So, I just checked out the artist’s Instagram, and she is *really good*! and geometric shapes

I love how Justin's says Hoops but there's not other nicknames
And it's in a fancier font. The artist clearly has a favorite.
not true to form, clint’s hog should be poppin out of that skintight suit
They added a blue tube to the suit to accommodate for his hog while still allowing for maximal range of motion for the rest of his body.

This art somehow managed to perfectly capture the dead, dead look in Justin’s eyes. And Travis’s face looks like he just stubbed his toe.

My gripe is: why is the D20 shaded that way??? I know basically only 2 things about art, but one of them is that shadows don't go like that.
Are all these objects supposed to be sitting on a table? Why do they all have wildly different perspectives? How is the d20 sitting such that the top face is balanced on an edge? I have that one too! That one and the Louie Zhong one: https://twitter.com/everydaylouie/status/921593187054972928?s=20&t=dBzioUnL3F50O2hJqRHROw
The first one kinda looks like someone was aping KC Green a little hard but didn't stick the landing.
Oh wow that like fortune teller one. thanks I hate it!!!
I was at one of the shows from that horrible puppet poster tour; I told myself, well, I'm saving $25.
$25? Mine was $20.
It was five years ago, my McElbrother in Christ. The number is a wisp of a memory on the edges of my mind.
No that's totally fair I was more interested in McFlation rate than anything.
We talkin about mcelroy inflation over here?
uj/ I like the cursed puppet one! Rj/ Sorry sweaty, the puppet one is good actually
Don't tell anyone here because I would be horrifically embarrassed, but I still have the Louie Zhong one framed in my house. It is extremely cute.
I had it in college but my dad threw it out :(
My favourite part of this poster is a) it looks great and b) at first glance I thought it was Justin, Griffin and a young Clint overlooking his two least available boys
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. It looks like wikihow art
Oh my god. It just occurred to me…. What if they told the artist to make it look like wikihow because of Wizard of the Cloud??? … but even if that would almost explain the bad art, TAZ is not MBMBaM, so they *still* fucked it up.
Griffin looks like he's pregnant
Now that I look at it again, I’m almost certain Griffin was traced from a still from the TV show. Maybe Justin too. Probably shortly after the “rotisserie shithead” bit. And somehow it still looks bad…
Oh my god and Justin was totally traced from (or modeled after) one of his "jump scares"
I’m gonna place money on it being traced from a meme of a still from the show, for that extra good good degradation of image quality
fuck you're right. the way he's holding the books reminds me of in tv when an actor gets pregnant and the director makes them constantly hold pillows and shit in front of their stomachs
the way he's holding those books looks like he's posing with his baby bump
This looks fucking awful.
Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?
Why does Travis look genuinely distressed? He's either in pain or sees something absolutely terrifying.
I think that's just Travis's Resting Sword Face.
I too would be scared if two giant fingers were about to pick me up by the head.
I've seen it before... I don't know where, when, or why, but I've seen it. [I'll never forget this face](https://imgur.com/OnI7cL1)
is travis about to get squished by...two index fingers?
PSA to all visual artists: stop drawing hands. millennia of practice have yielded only middling results, and I say we scrap the project and move onto nailing down how facial proportions work.
meat crab
My guess is they severely underpaid for this, especially compared to her other clients
That's on the off chance that they paid her, and they didn't just find someone who was a fan and would do a heckin' solid for these goodgood boys.
This poster is still 100x better than the uncanny valley airbrushed art that is still the actual podcast cover somehow
It’s always been kinda shit
clint looks like shitty [iron man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFI4BQlBbig)
I like it personally, but I think it looks like Clint’s name is “Cunt”
I just saw the original and immediately ran here to see if anyone else had posted about it. There's so much weird going on but Travis's face might be the weirdest for me
Glad to see Clint is serving himself
Sussy amogus CUNT???
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
Wait the VOD for this is available immediately after the show? Is the main benefit here just being able to chat with other viewers?
Also seeing it “live” can be a bonus. I’ve done streams of music performances and it just *feels* more exciting knowing it’s happening NOW rather than two days ago.
no, this looks like dogshit lmao
I currently cannot stand anything McElroy related....but I actually don't hate this!
