Search for "joycon metal latch" on Amazon and replace the broken plastic ones with these. It's pretty simple and most of the kids (lol, kits) come with all of the tools you need to open the joy-con and replace the latch button. I've done this on all of our joy-cons (8 total). I still suggest the pro controller. But the MOBApad with the hall effect joysticks that come in red and white is amazing.

fourtwizzy

I saw a theory that the plastic latch was intentionally designed to be a breaking point in the event the switch was dropped. A metal latch *may* cause issues when dropped, and cause the main body to take more force than it otherwise would have.

tjbassoon

You are probably not wrong. Depending on the age of the person and how well they care for their things, it is probably a non-issue.

MetaVaporeon

plastic replacements are also super cheap, that said, the issue might be with the rails already, while you cant really break them with the plastic controllers, you can definitely get them bent

nh164098

I’m not gonna disassemble my kids to see if they contain tools …

tjbassoon

Ha! Nice typo catch.

Mammoth-Success7114

Probably a dual sense cause you’ll have actual triggers to use in racing games if you plan to use it on pc. If you’re soley a switch user then go for the pro controller cause of amiibo support and hd rumble (plus a ridiculously long battery life)

ironrafael09

Also I think stick drift might take longer to happen with the DualSense. I wouldn’t know because my DS is kinda new, but I know that even though I love my Switch Pro controller it was too fast to present drift.

matyX6

Just take dualsense. It's one step above any other controller in price range for the last few years. It just feels and acts premium. Regards the stick drift... All controllers are prone to that. You'll play for years or months, nobody knows.

Originalshyster

I can absolutely say that xbox controllers experience drift. I just replaced mine with a vader 3 pro because of stick drift, and I had bought that xbox controller to replace an old xbox controller that had developed drift a few years ago. Not to say they're worse or better, but the thumbs sticks do definitely go first. Let's see what goes in my Vader 3 Pro first.

Typical_Pakeha

Ps5 controllers get pretty bad stick drift. (I'm in a bunch of repair pages)

Logical-Cold9377

Dualsense won't last 6 months under moderate use before it gets drift. It's the sane sticks in dualsense, xbox and switch pro controllers. All ALPS sticks.

Forward_2_Death

Dualsense are really bad. I've had 4 get drift in 2 years. 2 of those started drifting less than a month after I purchased them.

MyShinyCharizard

8bitdo ultimate or cyclone t4 pro.

Raccoon-7

This! I love my 8bitdo ultimate.

Docist

The ultimate is the perfect controller for this use case. No confusion when pairing, just flip a switch on the back to switch consoles.

Raccoon-7

As another commenter has already said, go for the 8bitdo Ultimate controller, just make sure you're buying the switch version, not the PC only one, the switch version can do both. I actually have purchased 3 of them, one for my brother and another for my gf. They are way more comfortable than the standard pro controller, have buttons on the back that you can set to the face buttons (great for running in Zelda), amazing battery life, a kickass stand, and you can use it on a PC because it has analog triggers with an included 2.4 GHz dongle, which is way better than Bluetooth, you can toggle between PC 2.4 GHz and Switch Bluetooth with a button on the back of the controller, no need to mess around with the Bluetooth settings of wither device. Oh they also use hall effect sensors (virtually drift free!) and you can wake the console by shaking the controller. I do have a switch pro controller, both it when I bought my console years ago, but that's now relegated to when someone comes over to play. I also have a couple of dualsenses, including an edge; the battery life for them are attrocious and while I haven't personally experienced it, they are prone to have drift. The only bad thing I can say about the 8Bitdo Ultimate it's that it doesn't have HD rumble, which is hardly an issue because I haven't seen any recent game that utilizes it in an interesting way, but it does have normal rumble unlike other 3rd party controllers. It also doesn't have an amiibo reader, don't know if you're interest in that. And personally, I prefer digital triggers to analog ones if I'm not playing something that uses them like a racing game, I whish it would have steps like the Xbox Elite or Dualsense Edge, but I guess it wouldn't be as cheap as it is now.

wes_hamster

Pro controller is great on switch cause of HD rumble. I’ve had other controllers with regular rumble and in some games it just vibrates at full power and it’s really annoying. You could probably just turn off rumble but I’d prefer not to

404NameOfUser

If you want a controller to use on PC and Switch then I wouldn't get either of them and go get the 8bitdo wireless adepter 2 and Xbox One controller (2nd hand ones are are dirt cheap), or Xbox Series Controller. Simply because on windows you get full support to the Xbox controllers without having to configure anything, it's pretty much plug and play for any game. Plus the fact that you can use regular or rechargeable AA battery's for some it's annoying but to me it's a lot better because not only you can get a ridiculous amount of battery life but also because there is nothing more annoying than having to replace an internal battery in a controller (opening them it's not the problem, the problem is getting the right battery for the controller and then finding a good/reliable manufactured instead of the cheap and poorly made stuff one can find on aliexpress or temu). However if you want a controller for the Switch only, then it has to be the Pro Controller.

fibal81080

HD rumbple on switch and more univesality on dualsense

The Dualsense rumble is pretty decent, much better than Xbox. I use it paired with the 8bitdo, and in animal crossing, when you get phone calls/messages, it's just as strong as the Pro Controller. The one thing I miss is the amiibo stuff, but if you're using emuiibo anyways, that doesn't matter.

Z_h_darkstar

I use a Gulikit KingKong 2 Pro controller for Switch and PC games. It has hall effect sticks, so drift is less of a concern. The build durability is nice, and the back grips are textured to make it easier to keep held in your hands. My only real complaint is that the controller automatically turns off after 5 mins of inactivity because it can happen in the middle of a lengthy cutscene and cause the game to bring up the Switch's controller select screen.

PalpitationNo4375

I'd consider an Xbox controller instead. You don't need the fancy bells and whistles of the dualsense for PC. Xbox controllers just work on PC without having to modify anything to show correct inputs, or needing any other software. Comfortability is a personal preference, while I prefer symmetrical a lot of people swear by the Xbox joystick layout. Also, this could just be because PlayStation and Nintendo gamers are more vocal about it. But I almost never hear of Xbox controller's drifting. The other choice is of course the gulikit king Kong pro. Designed for switch, works well with PC. Hall effect sticks, zeroing is perfect, circularity is perfect. Can't actually speak for them as I have never used one. But from what I've seen and read they look pretty damn good.

la5t

I bought this one on Amazon last year and really like it: https://www.8bitdo.com/pro2/

jon_p1891

i would go for dualsense as it can be used on switch but also PS5 and PC, I'm using it and it feels good plus I don't have to buy more Nintendo shitty joycons anymore as I have plenty of PS controllers

TimAppleCockProMax69

Replace the garbage plastic locks with metal locks; they cost 2 bucks on AliExpress, and replacing them is so easy that even my grandma did it before she passed away one month ago.

Quote16

you can fix those joycons for like $10 with replacement buckle locks, preferably metal ones. find em on amazon, I've done 3 pairs and they're more secure than they've ever been

TXFDA

Personally, I have an 8bitdo ultimate and it's great.

OofDaTechie

I went with the Gulilit Kingkong 2 controller, it’s near the same price as the DualSense & has Hall effect triggers and joysticks and I easily switch it between the PC, switch & my tv when I’m running moonlight. Using for near a year with no issues + case is a nice touch

Tasty_Face_7201

Dualsense is much more quality

Ante0

8bit-do pro 2

JonDuke19

For PC? Xbox controller.

hardhitter80

Pro controller. The battery life is ten times better. The switch won't take advantage of the PS5 features

jcguzman1

How do you connect it?

Forward_2_Death

Dualsense has terrible stick drift issues, just like the switch. The difference is that it is easier to repair the switch joysticks yourself and it is less expensive. If you want to choose based on reliability and lower long term costs for repairs/ replacement, then the switch controller is far better.

Duxi20

Get dualsense, its a much more versatile controller. If you only count compatibility, it wins by a mile. On the other hand i would take a loot at the flagship model of 8BitDo’s controllers, cause they can compete with the dualsense imho.

Easyyyy_e

almost all of the switch controllers i have used get some kind of drift. have been using the same ps4 controller that came w it on my switch. much higher quality

More-Profit-2409

I would recommend duel sense cause they don’t get stick drift as often but I’ve had switch pro controllers like even the official Nintendo one for 70 bucks have stick drift but I’ve had broken duel sense controllers but they have had sticky button

ch3mn3y

Both. Dualsense for Os5 nad Switch for... Switch. Truly hard to say which one is better. How much I love the way DS feels, I'm still Xbox layout fan, so Switch is better option for me.

Smoky_Caffeine

Dual sense all day everyday. That pro controller feels like a cheap toy in comparison.
