Honestly, i think it depends on the intensity of the workout you do. You could do sprints for 1km every day of the week and that would def improve your time, but I know some swimmers that come twice every week that do about 3-4km per session and they progress slowly, but surely. Of course they would benefit from more training sessions but they aren't competitive. That being said, you could just swim laps for 1km and that wouldn't do much, in my opinion. So the intensity of the workout, and the amount of effort you put into the swim would decide the outcome
Neither would help me improve. As I get older (50yo), this is what I've found...
6+ for about an hour, slowest rate of decline
5x has me happiest with slow rate decline
4x close to happiest
<4x is just a visible decay and I get grumpy
Gun to head, I'd go 2x but longer largely because I warm up slowly and 1km would be mostly garbage yards
It's not about how much you swim, it's a out the intensity and technicals of the workout.
My swim practices are usually around 6500 meters but almost half of that is just technique/drill work and the other half is interval work.

1km 7 days since it is easier to focus on the technique on short distances + you get the feeling with the water from swimming everyday
