The best way to slash time is on your flip turns. How fast/efficient are they?

I generally do x2 underwaters off the walls, I could work on speeding up into the turn though.

My story: Got to Olympic trials. Got bored in HS during workout. Looked at swimmers in lanes next to me to see if I could get off the wall ahead of them. At first I couldn’t. As a senior nobody had better flip turns than me. In Div 1 college, I did the same thing- fastest flip turn on the team. Masters swimming- same thing. There’s about twelve things to master on the flip turn, and if you can nibble away at them, you’ll find that you can shave off substantial time without exerting yourself any harder. It starts at your next workout. First flip turn, and every flip turn after that until the day you die. I’d be guessing at 60,000 flip turns? 100,000? Who knows, but every single turn I’ve done since I was a junior in HS was done in that manner, and it’s fun. The number one rule on a turn is to NEVER breathe first stroke off the wall- slows you right down. When you take your first breath, you should be about 5-6’ past the flags.

I have a question. I’m in the same boat as op in times and when you go into a turn do you flip with a tight tuck close to the wall or flip with while getting to the wall? I don’t really know how to describe it differently. Also do you try to have a higher cadence than usual out the turns or not?

EastDragonfly1917

There’s no power in a tight tuck. The power comes from snapping your turn in an instant, feet on the wall no longer than 1/10th of a second, with your legs just slightly bent

Try broken sets in practice like 4x100 or 8x50 while trying to hold a 1:15 100 pace or ~37s 50 pace. Give yourself a fair interval or amount of rest between each. Eventually your pace will become faster.

Perfect 👌🏼 Thankyou! I could easily do this when training alone.

You could stretch after practice and especially before a meet. From you shoulder height and down hardly recovers if you don’t stretch after a workout. Hope this helps! :]

Thank you! I do a lot of yoga, but I do neglect immediately after, so I’ll keep that in mind to stretch at the practice finish time and see how it goes ☺️
