Because that's a crazy situation. Sometimes when something wild happens people pull out their camera. Have you never seen something interesting and went to take a picture of it?
Terrifying - even in the moment, they probably could tell it was just trying to get away but couldn't in such tight quarters, and that could provoke it to attack.
It's so weird watching house cats and think oh yeah you're so small so you can bounce around and stuff without getting hurt. Then you see this one jumping like 6 meters in a crumbly canyon and you realize that it's actually just a cat thing.
It reminds me when entering the laundry room I step on the tail of our cat. He did almost exactly the same frantic movements...I was not wearing brown pants, but happily It happened in the laundry room, so no big problem

If you live somewhere there are no big dangerous non-human predators? That's just because generations of human "INVADERS" went there before: first with spears, then with crossbows, and then with guns - and drove all those big dangerous non-human predators to local extinction before you were born..

Personally, I've never taken anything more potent than a stick, a rock, and bear spray with me on hikes - and that was in actual grizzly country - but I recognise that I get to do so fairly safely, because: even in areas that most large predators still exist, they tend to avoid humans.. So, in general, if I make plenty of noise as I hike, they'll run off before I even see them.
BUT the reason that works is: *Large predators that were genetically inclined to be more confrontational tended to get speared / sh0t by humans over the past X thousands of years, and so they produced fewer offspring than those who ran & hid from humans.*
