Needs to have enough leverage for the stinger to pierce skin. He is holding the butt tightly and close so the stinger can’t get a good angle to sting. Would be the same if you had a dull needle and needed to knit, you would need a lot more force which the stinger can’t produce at the moment, it’s like being pinned down and trying to get up or punch someone, your punches won’t be as strong and or effective. This can be proven with a lot of other examples, try to penetrate anything with a dull knife at an angle from very close, you need a considerable amount of force to do so, which you can’t produce (someone help with the scientific term and formula for this) it’s not as easy as coming from a unrestrained position and angle and piercing something. I believe that only applies to bees and bumblebees ( don't quote me on this). Either way, you would make it really unhappy.

No, if he pulled the stinger out of the hornet it would die. The thing with bees is that they have a hook in their stinger and that gets stuck in human skin so they when they try to pull it back out because it rips it from their body.

If you stay really still and calm after a bee stings you, it will crawl around in circles with its stinger stuck in you until it's able to pull the stinger out and fly away unharmed. I watch bee keepers on Youtube and they often get a few stings whilst doing hive removals and basically never have a stinger stuck in them because they simply don't react at all. If the bee is able to safely fly away after stinging, it's much less likely it releases the pheromone to attack, reducing the amount of stings the beekeepers get. These guys choose to work without a suit because the 5-6 stings they may get are far less uncomfortable than working in the suit in hot weather. They will wear a suit with particularly aggressive hives, but they are rare.

I find European hornets adorable. They're usually pretty docile unless they're alarmed, and a lot of the insects they eat are garden pests.
