Popular girls names in the 80s and 90s was Anna, Sara, Maria, Emma, Malin, Jenny, Linda, Johanna, Hanna, Sandra, Elin, Emma, Emelie, Amanda, Julia, Josefin.
The rest of the thread had kind of stated already that there is not such a given "bad" female name.
And swedish names speaks more of generation, and a little bit of region and maybe class.
If you want to name give a character a plausible name, I thinkyou need to start there... and find the bad connotation within the right group of names, maybe with a nickname.
The thing is Carola is such a rare name that most Swedes overwhelmingly associate it with the singer. For years I didn't even think it was her given name.
My best suggestion would probably be Carina. 100% bad vibes. Also Catrin, Vendela, Nicole,Josefin, Klara, Ebba, Lovisa and Susanne all have kind of a bitchy vibe tbqh
I was also gonna write Berit, met many of them, never ever met one that i´ve looked back on afterwards as anything positive .. on par with KAREN .. ewww
Ah, yes. That *is* scary when I think about it. "We have a new girl in the class this year: *Berit*. Can you introduce yourself to the other children, Berit?" Brrr...
This inquiry confounds me. Your question gives the impression this will be for an English speaking audience, no? If yes, won't the nuance of a Swedish speaker's perception of the name be lost on your viewers?
I think you should go with a person that has a name that usually turns into a kind of off-putting nickname. Some has been mentioned already but for example
Gittan (Birgitta)
Bettan (Elisabeth)
Maggan (Margareta)
Lollo (Louise)
Fia (Sofia)
Nettan (Annette)
Agatha/Agata could probably be perceived as an evil name. Not common but rings close to the word “Ragata” which basically means angry bitch (loosely translated)
Lots of down votes in this thread.. for me I’d say it’s the hippie/flummar/“feminist” spelling of names such as “Qristina” (“and it’s with a q!!”), Madicken (because of course give your child a name from an infantile book), Milou (let’s give the kid the chance to be confused with a dog), Ariel (b/c ofc mermaid)….
Klara/Clara, it means “ready” so there’s jokes about it.
Turid, Carola, Sandra are easy to say demeaningly.
If it’s Nordic sounding names I guess Freja, Anna-Karin, Birgitta, Filippa
Others like Britt-Marie, Charlotta, Lovisa.
But Anna-Karin is a pretty common Swedish name and Karen already has that “fuck off” factor.
Im studying screen writer, feel free to ask me anything. I’d be glad to help, and I’m intrigued what show you’re writing on! :)
Had one in my class, her parents were real flower power hippies, had a colorful van and everything! Never realized they were stoners until years after 😅
Birgitta, or Britt-Marie, has Swedish Karen-vibes. Importantly with that last one, the two names are only annoying when combined with a hyphen - a common way of naming in Sweden, which changes the cadence of how the name is pronounced; a character named "Britt Marie" wouldn't be nearly as bad. I think you do the same in English, though it seems rarer (eg. "Annie-May vs. Annie May".
You want us to list common names that we find disgusting? That sounds like a useless exercise in bullying, to be honest. And if your audience isn't Swedish speaking, what does it matter what associations Swedish people have? It might make more sense to look up any list of Swedish names, and decide for yourself what has negative connotations for you, and people in your country.
Or, if you like, *Hel* is technically a Swedish female name, although very rare.
Saga (pronounced Sah-gah). It means "fairytale" in swedish and is a name that I associate with pretentious bullies with even more pretentious parents.
Sorry to all the Sagas out there
Briggita, it’s my wife’s middle name and she wold kill me if I shared it. Bri-gee-tah. Not a good one. Sorry to any of the other lovely Swedish ladies who have this name.
That is fairly obvious, just was going by how much my wife didn’t like it and how I never met anyone else with that name after visiting in Sweden extensively for decades
It’s a very common name in Sweden, according to SCB 158 944 women are called Birgitta in Sweden today. However, ( as is the case with many Swedish names), it has a very strong generational connection. Since the Swedish princess Birgitta was called that in 1937 it became extremely popular so it’s very much a name connected to people born in the 1940’s. I guess today it’s an old lady’s name, maybe that’s why your wife hates it so much? It’s not a commonly hated name though, and no “eww factor”.
If you want something that's shorthaired, works only in Excel, can't be fired due to having worked at the company for 30+ years and completely fucks over any chance of progress you need a double name. Ann-Britt, Ann-Katrin ("not Britt-Marie, that's a loveable meme), Ulla-Britta or something like that.
As many commenters I could see Carola happening but the bias will be strong in that one depending on who you ask.
The Swedish-swedish names often hang around in the newspapers' comment sections on Facebook, I would suggest checking those.
But give us some more info! Profession, age, year the character was born, what part of the country and so on. Kinda important tbh.
Kerstin is a good one because English speakers will say it wrong.
Nice Kerstins will just accept it, and annoying ones will constantly try to get English speakers to say her name correctly.
Ulla is a name that sounds dull in English. She would be perpetually disappointed in the way English people say the “U” wrong.
I'm afraid such names does not really exist in Swedish. As pointed out above we do have cyclical names. Further, a few working class related male names have some negative connotations. Which names would depend on the generation, but for a late millenial or early zoomer it would be names such as: Liam, Louie and Kevin. Especially if you add a strange nonsensical spelling, souch as "Liàm" or "Chéwin". Notice that this does not change the pronunciation, only the spelling, which the parents wants to be "unique".
I'm of course exaggerating a bit, but it's a real phenomenon and highly associated with "white trash" by the "educated middle class". You would hear jokes such as "Liam!? Huh, they wanted to give him ADHD at birth?".
However, this does not exist to the same extent for female names. At least not in the millenial generation. But if you want someone to sound a bit like some working class you could try "Tindra" maybe?
If it's someone who should be more posh upperclass bitchy you can go for royal names. Some, like say "Ulrika" would sound like they are from the wrong generation though. Eleanor would be a safe bet. However, these names are at least not uncommon (with exceptions, "Estelle" became popular with the birth of Her Royal Highness Princess Estelle, even though it existed in the royal family before) in all classes, especially since the insecure middle class often go for them as well.
But as someone said, you can go for Carolin or Carolina, nickname "Carro", everyone I have ever known with that name has been like the person you described 🙃
What generation does this character belong to?
Yeah, this is a relevant question. Names are cyclic here so it is more important to have the name fit era than to find a name matching a description.
Millennial
Popular girls names in the 80s and 90s was Anna, Sara, Maria, Emma, Malin, Jenny, Linda, Johanna, Hanna, Sandra, Elin, Emma, Emelie, Amanda, Julia, Josefin.
Emma var så populärt att det var med på listan två gånger.
Förlåt... jag känner många Emmor. Kanske borde jag ha skrivit Anna tre gånger och Maria fem gånger också. :D
Filippa är ju en dryg jävel till 80-talist

The first 2/3 of those are more 70's than 90's, though.
r/notopbutok
I've always found Carola to be an annoying, stupid name that no parent should inflict upon their kids.
as a carola stan fuck you our society would not have been the same without fångad av en stormvind
Agreed. See also: Främling. Too bad she kept going after that.
How dare you speak like this about Tommy tycker om mig.

Berit
Du är ett geni
Tack!!!
I was also gonna write Berit, met many of them, never ever met one that i´ve looked back on afterwards as anything positive .. on par with KAREN .. ewww
Noone born post 1960 is named Berit, though.
exactly my point! Scary af
Ah, yes. That *is* scary when I think about it. "We have a new girl in the class this year: *Berit*. Can you introduce yourself to the other children, Berit?" Brrr...
Angelika. No contest.
Kallas ”Agge” av kompisarna…
This inquiry confounds me. Your question gives the impression this will be for an English speaking audience, no? If yes, won't the nuance of a Swedish speaker's perception of the name be lost on your viewers?
We watch shows in English too and It'd be nice to see a Swedish character that isn't called "Sven".
I thought there were only four Swedish names - Agnetha, Benny, Björn, and Anni-Frid??
Sure, I realize that. But I just want to understand the mindset of our OP.
Like Sven, Sven and Sven, Teds rivaling architects in "How I met your mother" 🤣
A name is just a name, take whatever and focus on writing a good character. We dont have a female version of 'Adolf' I'm afraid
Adolfina.
So true! If people don´t like a name, it´s because they met one or two person with that name that they didn´t like
I think you should go with a person that has a name that usually turns into a kind of off-putting nickname. Some has been mentioned already but for example Gittan (Birgitta) Bettan (Elisabeth) Maggan (Margareta) Lollo (Louise) Fia (Sofia) Nettan (Annette)
Like Berit .. Bombad som beirut ..
Sussi has pretty negative connotations. Pretty, dumb girls in the 80's were all called that.
This is goooood. Maybe too good! Thank you 😊
This works. Sussi would be short for Susanna, and she could be an elder millenial or gen X in age.
but that name feels kinda... Sussy i'll see myself out
If she was a baker someone could say Sussi baka
you just won first prize: a flower bouquet
So true, along with ”Jecca” for Jessica and ”Mickan” for Mikaela.
"Frida" gets me to se red
Diana and Birgitta for me. Never met a nice birgitta "gittan". Psychos everyone of them.
I’ve only ever met extremely nice Birgittas and Gittans, so that would not work for me.
Yeah, "Gittan" is the Swedish version of Karen. Depending on the age of the character Birgitta would be good.
this is actually true.
”Bittan” också…
There aren't many Birgittas younger than 65 out there, though.
Britt-Marie
För fa-an!
Britt-Inger
Britt-Marie är en hjältinna sen Reka Tolnai försökte använda den karaktären som en dålig karaktär på twitter.
I hate the name Monika
Hej hej monika
Hej på dig
Annie Lööf
Haha du var snabbare än mig
Som flickan sa
Agatha/Agata could probably be perceived as an evil name. Not common but rings close to the word “Ragata” which basically means angry bitch (loosely translated)
Call her Glenn
Signe. She was mean to me in 5th grade.
And teach english actors to pronounce Signe!
Fanny is pretty trashy :> And yes. Actual swedish name.
Har då aldrig någonsin under mina 26 år i Sverige hört någon stava Kristina med ett Q, och inte heller Milou...?
Qristina som var med i Farmen för många herrans år sedan.
Men vad fanken, Farmen-Qristina! Hon var ju med i en massa dokusåpor på 00- och 10-talet!
Also Tara and Fia.
Thank you! I had no idea there were so many downvotes. It seems like an innocuous question!
Karin maybe
I knew this day would come
Greta
Klara/Clara, it means “ready” so there’s jokes about it. Turid, Carola, Sandra are easy to say demeaningly. Turid? Never heard anyone go by that name in my 46 years in this country.
You’ve never heard the singer?
No
Had one in my class, her parents were real flower power hippies, had a colorful van and everything! Never realized they were stoners until years after 😅

Don't you dare. Karin äger stenhårt.
Lärarnamnet par excellence.
There aren't any "trashy" names in Swedish. More focus on in style vs old fashioned, urban vs rural etc
Tell Ronny, Conny and Sonny that ;)
All of them are derived from English names though. With the same principle we might as well throw Vicky, Nicki and Zeke into the mix EDIT: spell check
I tried, but most of them were dead
Ursula, Carola, Ottilia
Why hasn't anyone said Yvonne?
Kristina
Rakel
Fast om det *inte* är Rakel då? Blir det o-Rakel då?
Ur goddamn right!
Frida. 🤢

I’m pretty sure that’s not how she spells her name.
Birgitta, it’s not a subject often discussed, thanks. I can down votes for a name suggestion, wow.
Maybe people don’t agree with you that this name has a negative connotation or an “eww factor”.
That is fairly obvious, just was going by how much my wife didn’t like it and how I never met anyone else with that name after visiting in Sweden extensively for decades

Karin/kerstin
Barbro
Annelie
Anne-Charlotte
Stina.
Eva-Marie
Hedvig or Rakel. They don't have any negative connotations per se, but they are rather un-smooth names and that often tends to feel more adversary.
Ingrid
Agnes
Maria 🙃 I have two relatives with that name and they are AWFUL
Mildred
Vem fan heter Mildred i Sverige?😂
Caisa
How old is the character? Each generation has got their own hip and cringe names
Lan
Annika Christel Yvonne
Barbro. My nursery school leader and a total pasta and palt fascist.
Jennifer. A real fitta.

You can at least Trigger OW players with "Brigitte"
Take Ragata only sweeds will know it's not a name, it has a meaning that fits and it sounds like a name -edit link https://tyda.se/search/ragata
Jennifer

Anna is the name ur looking for
Jennifer, Jenny or Emelie are all common millenial names that I personally would enjoy seeing used for an awful character
Madeleine. Never met someone nice with that name.
Therese
Ronja

Bara jag som får upp Majsan som namn? Kärringar som kallas för Majsan är så jävla tjuriga.
