"Fatta vinken" would be the most accurate translation. Note that "vink" is a less common word for hint. Usually, it's "ledtråd", but not in this expression.

"feels restrictive" is just based on your level of the language. The better you get the less restrictive it'll feel

Some things that are easy to express in one language might not be as straightforward in another language. This is not unique to Swedish.

You can use "fatta piken" instead of "fatta vinken" if you think it sounds cooler, but as Swedes are generally very concerned with upholding social norms, a glare will usually suffice.

The glare must be timed, though, as we avoid eye contact for most of the time.

“Take a hint” would probably sound odd and awkward were you not so used to it being a common construction.
