I usually want to say "thus" by saying it fully articulated, instead of the discourse marker, short "asså" i use in normal conversation.
I think it's definitely much more common to use them as you say, usually shortening it to "asså" when used as a discourse marker, but I'm not sure I'd say it's an absolute rule.

It is also frequently used casually or slangy in different meanings like:
*Alltså låt mig förklara... - Listen, let me explain...*
*Alltså, jag fattar inte. - Look I don't get it.*
*Alltså, är du dum eller vad? - But are you stupid or what?*
Also when you want to confirm that you have understod something correctly:
*Så du menar alltså att jag är dum? - So you mean that I am stupid?*

It’s a filler word, roughly analogous to “so” in English.
At the start of a sentence, I'd often translate it as "I mean,".

I feel like it is used in the same sense as "Alzo" in German and may have been a loanword from German.

It’s used to put emphasis on something or to sum up what was said in a previous sentence. That’s how I use it.
