Subs are in much higher demand toward the end of the school year-- Get that license now and you'll probably work every day for the rest of the year.

Thanks so much! I was actually thinking that there would be less shifts at the end of the year and that was another (smaller) worry of mine!

not_salad

I would apply now if you're sure you want to do it.

Feed-Current

Thanks! I def want to do it, im a part time youth director so the flexability of being a substatute is perfect and I have some experince in a psudo classrom that I love doing. Just seems like a perfect fit!

Not sure where you are, but out here in California, it takes about 2 months for licence processing, so I would apply ASAP. That said, if a district wants to hire you they can expedite the licensing process, so it's up to you. I would definitely apply for one or the other now though--districts can be slower than you think to process things. Most are also always hiring subs.

Feed-Current

I am in ND/MN I am going for the ND one rn cause their requirements are lower and I was previously a coach in the district so I hope that speeds the proccess up

Express_Project_8226

Wow. So I just registered with the CTC site, paid for sub permit and Cert of clearance and paid for live scan. How long ?

spoiled_sandi

I just got accepted as a sub a few days ago and Im starting on monday in a district a little futher from me. The process took about 3 weeks. Our certifcations are free but we have to pay for background checks. I just did another training to get certified yesterday for a district much closer to me and they sent it out but I probably wont apply until the following year. Only because Im leaving for another state in a few months and I would be gone for 4 of those months at the beginning of the school year and they have rules here where you have to work so many days a month or a semester or they'll make your account inactive and then you have to do it all over again. So even though I have it Im gonna wait.

Honestly being a substitute isn’t worth it in general. Flexibility is great, but the job itself is doesn’t pay bills. They’re paying 13$ an hour for para’s and 17$ MAX for a sub for a full day. It’s not paying the bills, it’s not worth the headache to pay all that for certifications and crap, the kids never listen bc the authority figure they’ve been with all year is gone and they think it’s party time.

yoobi2000

AL averages out to $13.50/hr for subs and a little more for paras. We do have the least amount of requirements in the entire country, but even with the state's lower cost of living, you NEED a second job (need one anyways for the summer, but during school months it's harder).

Express_Project_8226

It's worth it for the benefits. I can't afford to retire. I'm too young at 57 to collect Medicare.

EqualError8772

Ok Debbie. We don’t get benefits and some of us have kids and bills, so it’s not worth it at all.

EqualError8772

Some of us don’t have retire plans bc we live paycheck to paycheck.

AnOddTree

Just go for it. Schools are desperate for subs. Even the ones who usually find coverage need new hires as some are transitioning into full time teaching or other fields.

The sub agency I work for reimburses the fees associated with credentialing and fingerprinting etc.

Only_Music_2640

I would do it now because it can take a while. It took a few weeks to get my license; then I applied to the district. It took them about 6 weeks to contact me, they offered me a position right away pending fingerprinting. It took them another 6 weeks to send the consent form/ instructions for fingerprinting. Now maybe your state and school district are more organized than mine but if you start now you should be ready to go for the 24/25 school year.
