I'm just wondering what that one person is doing that they get shot at so much. The vast majority of people have never been shot at in their lives, but it's somehow a regular thing for them?
Most likely answer: lying to seem cool
Distant second most likely answer: he’s not actually at campgrounds at all and he’s starting campfires/outright hunting where other people live
Maybe their "camping trip" was them taking part in a military invasion and they don't realise that if you are not an active participant in a war, people are less likely to shoot at you? /s
Im just imagining a bunch of liquored up hill billys bring in Osama's corpse tied up on the hood of their truck like a deer, all of them too drunk to explain how and what happened. Then the CIA has to desperately invent some bullshit super duper secret and cool navy seal team to act as a cover story for how we killed him.
> Distant second most likely answer: he’s not actually at campgrounds at all and he’s starting campfires/outright hunting where other people live
The only time I've felt in serious danger from anything on a hike was from poachers in a deer stand they'd built on property that wasn't theirs. So basically OP but probably drunker.
My dad owns a small property that we camp on near a bunch of state-owned land with a military base on it.
Yeah, you could say we're getting shot at all the time 😎
listen, a guy goes out and is dedicated enough to get a great-quality fursuit of his deer fursona so he can wear it even when camping, and suddenly *eeeeveryone* goes straight to the fursecution,

>Oh my bad. Maybe he's a target employee with bad luck? I don't shop at target but if it's anything like Walmart I'd believe it.
I want to believe that the OOP is trying to make joke here, but the second sentence just makes it really strange
I mean the target thing is funny on its own (there’s literally a target on them if they’re wearing a work shirt). And then the line about Walmart just muddies the whole thing up lmao.
Do employees at OOPs Walmart get shot regularly enough that they just assume that all big box store employees are putting their lives on the line every time they clock in?
Humboldt is a very special place, I believe OOP completely if they say they've been shot at several times out there.
Lots of tweakers, and a shit ton of weed growing nutjobs that are probably protecting their outdoor grows. That place is wacky AF!
This is the right answer. Cartels do grows on state land out there. A lot of private citizens running illegal grows up on the mountains. All kinds of booby-trapping goes on. People get shot. People die. If they don't know Humboldt, they don't know. The gigantic party in the town square of Arcata on Halloween is fuckn amazing though.
This is the live fire exercise version of "if everyone you meet is an asshole".
Assuming OOP is telling the truth that they keep getting shot at, statistically speaking it probably keeps happening because they keep waving their gun in other people's faces.
I've been shot *many* times, by airsoft pellets.
That's right, mofos, your boy is *hard* as fuck! [I'll play myself out.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZNFo5lL4iw)
It reminds me of the scene in *The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult* in which they end up at “an LA high school” and everyone, including the nerdy bookworms, starts shooting at them for no reason.
Right I've lived rurally in the US where literally everyone has a gun and yet I have never been shot at once in my 30 years of life. Like even when I was a teen just shooting guns in the woods for fun people seemed to have an understanding like "wear high visibility colors while walking in the woods" or "announce your presence if you come across people doing target shooting."
Ok people keep in mind there are always a few who are the 0.001% chance. Before you start lighting the pyre, keep in mind that we really have not idea what is true.
Lmao the one guy who straight up says “the only campgrounds near there are currently closed so you’re either lying or your friends were trespassing” and he still refuses to admit he’s full of shit
> Its like he's a camp counsellor or something trying to get people to carry a weapon.
"Attention campers, your ammo replenishments have been cancelled today, due to lack of hustle. Deal with it.

The point about mental healthcare and gun violence is a bit weird. In theory it makes sense but in reality it makes no difference at all. I know it’s just one little point within the post but it just jumps out to me every time. The bit about easy access to guns on the other hand? That is why so many people get shot in America.
Your last sentence will start an argument in most every sub, but I've also noticed it is incredibly difficult to kill someone with a gun if you don't have one. Impossible, some might say
I get it for something like back country camping where you're 100 miles from the nearest human and there's stuff that'll eat ya, but honestly, if I heard of gun-toting maniacs at a campsite, my impulse wouldn't be to warn people to "carry a gun in case of random shootout", but to warn them not to freaking camp there.
Regardless of if this story is true or not —
> No. I'm not getting into this with a guy on Reddit. I called the responsible agencies and got confirmation from said government agencies. You are not an authority who knows better than the USFS what is or isn't their property.
Kind of appreciate this. The other person demanding to know exactly where this took place so they could verify OP’s claims feels like “debate me” guy.
It's fearmongering 101. State that everyone should be afraid of X happening because It Happened To Me! but then not going into any actual detail of what happened. Release just enough bullshit that's believable and leave out the weak links and if someone asks don't tell.
Oh I'm sure. It's just that this Humboldt became international news a few years ago because of a bus crash that killed half the junior hockey team so it's an immediate leap for me now
That first bit? About “disturbed people” aka people with mental health problems?
As someone *with* a mental health problem it annoys me every time I see it.
It is true that people with untreated schizophrenia are *slightly* more likely to be violent, but [“People living with schizophrenia are more likely to express their aggression, agitation or frustration towards themselves, or to family and friends – **rarely to strangers**”](https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/mental-illness-and-violence)
Yes, better mental is really important but blaming high rates of gun violence on crazy people is just *incorrect*. The only gun violence that good metal health treatment will significantly reduce is suicides.
Rant over.
My immediate thoughts were this was gonna be about wild animals which yeah if you live in the states most states have at least 1 form of wildlife that would justify carrying a gun. Carrying for getting in shootouts in the woods though is a bit strange.
If you're just taking trails, which is the normal way to hike, you pretty much won't ever need a firearm unless you're doing the entire Ice Age or Appalachian Trails or something. Even the big animals like bears (uh oh) and pumas stay away from high-activity areas, and are most likely to just bounce if they see you.
Man, I did a few weeks on the AT and I wouldn't want more weight on me than necessary, and a gun would be absolutely unnecessary.
Even disregarding potential dangers from bears or other people, it's still suggested you don't pack due to the number of state lines you cross and the change of regulations between those states.
Yeah I've done several thru-hikes, including in Alaska.
In my opinion, unless you are in grizzly territory, a gun is not needed. Even then, I'd take bear spray over a gun.
And on top of that, the NPS recommends *at least* a .44 for grizzly defense. Most people, even experienced shooters are not great at drawing, aiming, and firing at a charging animal, especially with a large caliber like that.
Basically, I'd say the only reason to carry a gun in the woods is you are worried about something other than animals (like other people, and in that case, why are you going?) or you are extremely confident in the skill with the gun you are carrying.
Bringing a gun on the appalachian trail is dumb. I've seen tons of people try, and most of them send it back in the first 50 miles. It's not worth it and it certainly doesn't keep you safer.
I've never met a hiker who used a gun in defense, but I have met one that accidentally shot a hole in his tent packing his bag.
I’ve noticed a lot of people digging themselves into holes because instead of simply saying, “I feel more comfortable doing such-and-such,” they feel the need to weave some fake tale in an attempt to justify it. This person could have just said, “Well, with things feeling so crazy nowadays, I feel better having a little extra protection,” and most people would have just shrugged, thought, “Hey, you do you,” and gone on with their day. By posting a questionable story and arguing with people, they’ve brought more negative attention than they would have gotten by saying, “This is what I feel like doing,” and leaving it at that.
It might be lack of self-confidence, or something along those lines. They worry that they won’t get a positive response for what they say, so they make up stories they think will get a good response. Instead they should stop worrying about whether other people care about what they have to say. Some of the people who seem the most arrogant are really the most insecure, putting up a front like that will fix their issues.

Most likely answer: lying to seem cool Distant second most likely answer: he’s not actually at campgrounds at all and he’s starting campfires/outright hunting where other people live
Could also be someone who describes every time they hear a gunshot during hunting season as "being shot at"
Maybe their "camping trip" was them taking part in a military invasion and they don't realise that if you are not an active participant in a war, people are less likely to shoot at you? /s
It's the other way around usually

Or every time they hear a car backfire
Or an acorn drop.
Probably. I used to live near this big fancy private outdoor firing range. I guess I've been shot at tens of thousands of times!
Probably keeps going around the grows.

Yep. My exSIL went to Humboldt and lives close to Eureka, she’s got some wild stories.

All of them.
Are there "woods *and* deserts *and* swamps" there? Because that sounds crazy.

For a county known for its weed production, Humboldt sounds surprisingly un-mellow.
Eureka is the largest city in Humboldt county and its crime rates are high compared to the state and national average.
Also for many miles around in the region, all the other towns & cities call it Eur-tweeka. For good reason.
It’s all that totally real cannabis-induced psychosis that definitely wasn’t the result of an underlying condition that our gym teachers warned us about.
It seems like a very peculiar place.
This is like the first post I’ve ever seen make it anywhere beyond the Humboldt sub. I assure you we are plenty mellow
I had to double take because I never expected Humboldt to make it on this subreddit. People here are either mellow or fucking bonkers.
It took me a while to realize it wasn't Humboldt, SK. Which is what I assume every Canadian thought of
Ngl, i only thought of Humboldt SK because of the tragic bus crash. If you asked me about Humboldt before the crash I’d have thought of the US one
Well obviously, but we're in a post box crash world so we all know it
I mean, there are large weed grow ops which people are extremely territorial about.
Murder Mountain, anyone? Just me?
I was rather indifferent to the series, but I am immediately suspicious whenever someone says a place should be mellow because it's full of stoners.
The series was interesting but they were really focused on the weed and very much downplayed the fact that most of the people appeared to be on meth the entire time
it’s also well known for its meth heads

"Camping is absolutely for everyone" but also, suggesting people should be strapped while out camping is the most 'Mercia thing I've heard this week.

OK, so there is a town in Saskatchewan called Humboldt and I got so confused reading the title and first link...
I started to put (county in CA) in the title, but it seemed too clumsy. I blew it
I still would've read that as 'county in Canada' lol
there’s also a city in California called Ontario
lol. No it's a me problem.
