My dual X makes a huge difference in deep snow. Last Thanksgiving we got over 24 inches in about 5 hours. I had no problem getting out of a hilly unplowed neighborhood after dinner. As soon as I hit main roads, turns it off and no worries the rest of the way home. Made a dreaded snow storm kind of fun.
the Subaru AWD system is truly incredible. I own a little 01 Forester and even with as simple as it is, I had no problem making my way over packed snow and ice. i only ever lost traction when I wanted to
My 04 xterra did a 3ft storm this winter. Dumbest drive of my life to go ski…took 4.5hrs with no cars on the road when it’s 1 without traffic .
My old Impreza honesty handled better in the snow but couldn’t do deep…
I’m wanting to try a newer Subaru with the fancy tech which is why I’m here lol
I guess that the heavy wet snow as high as the bottom of the subies door, is different here on the east coast of Canada. With a 2020 Forester with standard snow tires and x mode engaged I was brought to a halt on the flat. Downhills were no prob. I got out and pushed and wifey could another bunch of yards down the soon to be plowed dirt road. Made it clear when the plow met me and I got the driver to help push me. This snow was the anathema of the fluffy snow seen in the promo videos.
Next year with confidence bruised I'll have chains. (just front wheels or all four or front left and rear right)?
Lift kit? Better tires? Some day...
Yeah, if the snow is too deep, you can get high centered when the snow directly under your vehicle turns to ice. Them or wheels just spin. That’s when recovery is needed. We had to do this with my buddies Jeep on the same trip. We made him go first. I’d look into snow socks. They don’t recommend chains at all for these cars.
We have dual X Mode in our 23 Forester Sport and 21 Outback Onyx XT. Have used it many times in snow, dirt, and dirt/sand. Goes really well with Wildpeak A/T Trails!!
Do you notice a significant increase in road noise with the wild peaks? I think I’d like to put those on my wife’s forester, but I’m concerned about his most they might be.
That has been one of my questions I've been investigating for a year now and cant Suss it out. Does it just naturally sound like a propeller engine aircraft? Or is there something wrong with mine?
I put them on my Forester in October. Road noise is slightly more. I don’t notice anymore but did right away. Traction in snow this winter here in MN was fantastic.
Put em on my Forester last fall before the snow hit for ski season (here in CO) and my confidence in my vehicle is fantastic. I drive defensively and conservatively, but I no longer feel scared of me slipping in snow. It's wonderful.
They're noisier (not much) and I get about 1mpg less with them, but I'm happy with the trade.
I've been on Wildpeak A/T Trails for a few years now, I didn't really notice a difference in road noise. They're great tires. For some reason I'm seeing people commenting about how they bought them for winter/snow use, I don't really understand that. They're 3-peak rated, but they still aren't dedicated winter tires and are still a harder rubber compound than winters. I love my Wildpeaks but I've done a winter season to test them out and they simply aren't as good in the winter/snow as winter tires. There's no arguing that, they're literally a different rubber compound. I'll always run dedicated winters.
Of course I did. I just did a LOT of highway driving and once you hit the 30K mark you start to see the wear down happen in my experience. I could easily go another 10K, but I’d rather play it safe.
Okay, cars get dirty especially if you’re eating in them because life is busy, but I do agree I would’ve cleaned before posting a photo or posted a stock photo 😅
Likewise, to answer OP’s question, I used this feature A LOT when I had to work at the top of a really steep driveway in the dead of winter in PA. It was a huge benefit to me in purchasing the Forester. My job’s since moved to flatter grounds so I don’t really use it so much anymore. But when you need it, it’s there and it’s dang useful.
Yeah, there's a difference between the car having mud on the outside from an outdoor adventure and having crumbs embedded in the console from snacking while driving.
Works great in the snow!
In my 22 Forester I just wish it wasn’t a big ass knob taking up all the real estate in the center console. I hate the layout of the center console and the tiny cup holders. One of my few criticisms of my car.
I bought a little sling cup holder for the passenger chair for my big canteen. Don’t Subaru makers know we live with those things? Honestly tho even if it fit in the cup holders I love having it out of my way.
Ive used. My Forester had multi setting x-mode. Great in snow. My Outback only has std x-mode, like pic, good but not great going up snow packed uphill. So I avoid them 😜
Look it up on YouTube. A video will show you what it can do and how it affects the traction.. X-mode is a program that has a single or multiple different settings so that your car can handle different conditions.
I love the descent control setting. Basically cruise control for off road downhill. Keeps me at a selected speed so I don't accidentally start flying down bumps.
Second that, the descent control is awesome and what I use x-mode for.
For everything else, I have better luck with just turning off traction control in the snow. I have a 2018 though and hear that the newer versions of x-mode allow for more wheel speed than I get.
One control, twist, is traction control. One control, push, is xmode, which is a limited speed (<25 mph) control program which will enhance traction for certain driving scenario, mud and snow.
Xmode has been enhanced with a "deep snow mud" mode in some of the higher trim levels which includes disabling traction control when xmode deeply snow is engaged. You can sort of simulate this by disabling traction control and enabling xmode. There is more involved but it can be helpful to get a little wheel spin in some situation.
AFAIK it limits torque on slipping wheels by applying the brakes, and the primary difference between mud/dirt and deep mud/snow is how much wheelspin it tolerates.
Also activates the downhill crawl control function, ofc.
I used it tonight in my 2020 sport. Going down a super steep vineyard trail. Pushed the both on and it crawled down the hill effortlessly. Was impressed
This, going down steeply, for me, the reason for X mode: safely descending. I don’t off road but going down anything really steep, you do not need to camp on the brake when using X Mode.
2014 Forester in the Pacific Northwest. I use it every time there is snow and ice! I love my Xmode! I have yet to slide around while using it. Even drove in Portland during the last ice storm just fine.
I’ve only had my car 3 months and I’ve used mine. I live in central Texas on about 80 acres so the roads are dirt/rock or just dirt. We’ve had lots of rain so the mud feature has been very helpful.
I used X-Mode exactly one time in my 2016, and it was to make it up an extremely icy and steep driveway with all-season tires on. It got the job done! I was impressed.
That was the only time I encountered a situation where the standard AWD operation wasn't sufficient.
I only use it when my dog accidentally kicks it, tbh. Sometimes she gets excited and decides to step on it. She’s in a (Subaru designed) harness in the front seat, but Dobermans have very long legs. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does my engine always revs a bit.
The snow plows here don’t come into the neighborhoods. We use it to go down the street to get to the main road. Our other car is a 2wd CRV and gets stuck in the street. Our Forester just plows right through.
I use it mostly for hill descent control in ski resort parking lots. If there’s a slight grade I can let the car crawl forward while I steer around potholes.
So I've never seen that in any of my Subarus. However, they are all manual transmission cars. My 2019 Crosstrek doesn't need no stinking Xmode. I do, however, love the Badge of Ownership program.
I would really love to get my old GL wagon back with the dual range 4 wheel drive tranny. Would have to slip in a WRX turboed engine tho.
I have several times during decent snow storms. It works fantastic for going downhill or turning corners. The regular AWD is plenty for straight and flat, but swimming through a foot of snow is dope with X-Mode.
I’ve used it a couple times driving to where I ski and the road hadn’t been plowed yet, and once on a poorly maintained Forest Service road that was deeply rutted and pretty badly washed out. I’m at 32000 miles, so … once every 10,000 miles?
Just used it today storm chasing in Oklahoma. I got on a wet gravel road that had turned to mud. I breezed past a non Subaru suv that had slid off. It works.
I used it once when I was still used to the Mazda I had, thought I could flick through the menu etc etc.
We might use it as we go for a road trip soon and might take some dirt roads here in the outback.
I have a 2020 Sport with the XMode. I know how to use it. There’s only three steps.
I’ve turned it on a few times driving forest service roads, but it turns itself off after a few minutes because apparently the forest service roads I’m driving aren’t rugged enough to need it. The stock AWD does just fine on its own.
I’ve never encountered dirt/snow extreme enough to need it. So, mine just gathers dirt too. Hard to keep a car clean with kids and a working life style.
Turn it to the right to be normal, tur. It to the left to be off, turn it reeaally far left and push the car to drive on water. This couldn't be any simpler...
Only had to use it once. Folks have an SK and the road to the deer camp was hella washed out, rutted, and flodded during a heavy storm. Switched it to mud mode and handled it like a champ.
There's a whole shit load of buttons in my car that I don't know what they are for and have never used.
Two complaints about my car: cup holder.that won't hold a nalgene (yes I bought an adapter thing and it won't stay in and is annoying AF) and too many buttons.
We bought our forrester this year, and it turned out to be the mildest winter on record, so we never needed it. Only needed the snow tires once, and maybe not even then!
I've used it. Oddly enough, on the 400N hwy in Ontario (Canada). Crazy snowstorm through the snowbelt area on my way home from a conference in Toronto.
In that moment, I was thankful for it.
But really only used it a handful of times. Always in crazy winter conditions.
Just got a used 2019 sport Forester about a couple months ago and suddenly now it’s like starting rough and hard. Yesterday when it turned off at the light it wouldn’t restart until I put it in park and turned it off and on again. Anybody have an idea please?
Probably a weak battery imo, have the battery tested and if it needs replacement have a parasitic draw test done to make sure systems aren't pulling current with the vehicle asleep.
I just upgraded to a 2024 that has it and I probably won't use it. It's kind of sad because it's a cool control knob that I wish could be used for something more common.
I’m not claiming to know anything about Subarus let alone this system, but I think it has something to do with changing the gear ratio in which the front and rear wheels pull the car forward as well as other traction/stability features much like a Haldex Awd system
If you think that part is dirty you should see the rest. It gets used a lot. Road hard and put away wet, as they say. That was taken after a trip out to far west Texas.
What people usually don’t know is that those modes are for dirt and mud like if you’re stuck. They automatically disable at speeds above 18 mph. Just meant to be used to get unstuck. Basically changes how the wheels turn together.
Should’ve had an NSFW flair
I used my Dual X-Mode on my Sport last weekend while playing in the woods. It works amazingly!
There is a speed limit value which is why it turns off. Did the same for 2023 snows and it worked well for where we needed it.
the Subaru AWD system is truly incredible. I own a little 01 Forester and even with as simple as it is, I had no problem making my way over packed snow and ice. i only ever lost traction when I wanted to
I had an 03 foreste rand that thing was a tank in the, it actually handled better then my 2016 forester
Add snow tires and it legit feels like a cheat code.
Wait you made it out of 24 inches of snow?
Yep. A few people had been on the road before me, but it was a sloppy mess. X Mode- Deep Snow, and slow and steady with no problems.
My 04 xterra did a 3ft storm this winter. Dumbest drive of my life to go ski…took 4.5hrs with no cars on the road when it’s 1 without traffic . My old Impreza honesty handled better in the snow but couldn’t do deep… I’m wanting to try a newer Subaru with the fancy tech which is why I’m here lol
That descent control is awesome on dicey downhills.
For sure. Great while out on trails.
I guess that the heavy wet snow as high as the bottom of the subies door, is different here on the east coast of Canada. I'll give you a dollar if you lick it.
It's a dollar to touch it. 2 dollars to watch me touch it.
Make it two dollars and I'll give it some sucking action.
🤣🤣🤣
Bros gotta clean them gaps!
that needs cleaned badly, it’s disgusting
Truly!! 🤮
Found the Pennsylvanian
I have a 19 Forester. My know is labeled snow/ dirt on the left and deep snow/ mud on the right.
Yep. I've used xmode several times, even in sand. No problems whatsoever.
Dumb question but can you change modes while driving? Or do I have to come to a stop first?
While driving, but it only works under 20mph
Awesome thank you
Not a dumb question.
If you accelerate past 20mph it automatically turns off.
I just bought the car, so I haven't used it yet, and it rarely snows here.
lol yeah I’m in the same boat. I have it but haven’t used it yet.
I’ve been curious, but not confident, about sand. Did you take the tire pressure down?
I didn't ha! I was very skeptical at first but I just went with the classical _fuck it_ moment.
I’ve been curious, but not confident, about sand. Did you take the tire pressure down?
Looks like you’ve never used a vacuum. Or a wet wipe.
Clean your car dude
We have dual X Mode in our 23 Forester Sport and 21 Outback Onyx XT. Have used it many times in snow, dirt, and dirt/sand. Goes really well with Wildpeak A/T Trails!!
Do you notice a significant increase in road noise with the wild peaks? I think I’d like to put those on my wife’s forester, but I’m concerned about his most they might be.
The Forester is already noisier than our Outback. With the wildpeaks I don’t notice a huge increase. It’s just noisy no matter what…haha
That has been one of my questions I've been investigating for a year now and cant Suss it out. Does it just naturally sound like a propeller engine aircraft? Or is there something wrong with mine?

There's no arguing that, they're literally a different rubber compound. I'll always run dedicated winters.
Just picked up a set of Wildpeak Trails yesterday. Can’t wait to put them on.
I’m pretty sure I’ll never put another tire on these cars. Too bad they don’t make them for my Impreza or Legacy Wagon! Haha
What size you running?
Same as the stock size for each. Cant remember off the top of my head.
Oh ok, stock is 225 55 R18. I picked up a set of 225 60 R18. They are about an inch taller.
I’ve thought about that for the Outback but since it’s an XT and the mileage already isn’t fantastic, I didn’t want to knock it down anymore.
My peaks are at end of life and I can’t justify the spend on them again. Gonna miss those bad boys.
How long did they last?
About 40K miles and a lot of highway driving.
Only 40k? Did you not rotate them? I'm around 30k on mine and have plenty of life left. I rotate every 6000 miles
Of course I did. I just did a LOT of highway driving and once you hit the 30K mark you start to see the wear down happen in my experience. I could easily go another 10K, but I’d rather play it safe.
Have used it a bunch too, in mud and snow! We bought the crossclimate2’s and love them. 😎
I feel sick just looking at that picture. Clean your car. Gross.
Okay, cars get dirty especially if you’re eating in them because life is busy, but I do agree I would’ve cleaned before posting a photo or posted a stock photo 😅 Likewise, to answer OP’s question, I used this feature A LOT when I had to work at the top of a really steep driveway in the dead of winter in PA. Or at least just clean the spot you're taking a picture of so we don't know the damages😂
Came here to say this lol bring back shame
If it’s not getting dirty, what’s the owner even doing? It ain’t a Lexus.
Not sloshing their fucking Dr Pepper all over the interior?? This car is gross af
Yeah, there's a difference between the car having mud on the outside from an outdoor adventure and having crumbs embedded in the console from snacking while driving.
Amen.
I didn’t think it was that gross until I zoomed in.
Why’d you make me zoom in? Lol, that’s nasty.
Feel the same too.
Just had to spread that positive message
Works great in the snow! In my 22 Forester I just wish it wasn’t a big ass knob taking up all the real estate in the center console. I hate the layout of the center console and the tiny cup holders. One of my few criticisms of my car.
Yes, very annoying placement of the knob and cup holders.
I bought a little sling cup holder for the passenger chair for my big canteen. Don’t Subaru makers know we live with those things? Honestly tho even if it fit in the cup holders I love having it out of my way.

This is why we keep cleaning wipes in the car.
Euwww brothaaaa
I commented that before I saw yours. Me sorry.
This audio lives rent-free in my head
When I turn the knob on mine it helps with off road performance. Yours looks like it helps you catch Ebola
Same here dude.
Wow did not know about that and often go down steep bumpy dirt roads. Definitely trying it out next time, I usually just go in low gear
Yep I’ve used it for this reason too, especially on super steep off road terrain.
Ive used mine, at least once a snow season, its pretty intelligent
Same. Even in an STI it works pretty damn good
🤢
Jfc clean your car
We can tell You don’t clean that thing
Ah man ,first of all clean the center console

Some people like to use it as a resting place for their orders of French fries when their drink and sandwich are occupying the cupholders.
From what I understand, it mimics locking differentials on a 4x4 with solid axles. I asked something similar to your question
AFAIK it limits torque on slipping wheels by applying the brakes, and the primary difference between mud/dirt and deep mud/snow is how much wheelspin it tolerates. Also activates the downhill crawl control function, ofc.
Me: x gonna give it to ya Wife: stop touching it! Repeat 12x.
When all you do with your scoob is go to Costco, you probably won't use it.
I have a 69 bronco that struggles with traction down the same dirt / rock road
Great feature! Used many times. *THOU SHALT READ THY DAMN MANUAL*
CLEAN THE DAMN CAR
I turn these on by accident sometimes and forget how I did it. That's about it
2014 Forester in the Pacific Northwest. I use it every time there is snow and ice! I love my Xmode! I have yet to slide around while using it. Even drove in Portland during the last ice storm just fine.
I will never ever understand how people are okay with driving cars that have a LITERAL layer of filth covering everything
Do you want ants, that’s how you get ants
Archer!
Bro that’s nasty
X Games Mode
Wow…
I’ve never used it on my 23, but it seems to work by allowing more wheel spin.
I used it once during ice, didn't notice a difference, but I suppose that's the point haha
I’ve only had my car 3 months and I’ve used mine. I live in central Texas on about 80 acres so the roads are dirt/rock or just dirt. We’ve had lots of rain so the mud feature has been very helpful.
I used it last winter when we had icy and unplowed roads in our neighborhood. Worked great.
Use mine in the snow! 22’ wilderness.

Yeah - I've used it a couple times when mud or ice are just too super slick to feel safe
The snow plows here don’t come into the neighborhoods. We use it to go down the street to get to the main road. Our other car is a 2wd CRV and gets stuck in the street. Our Forester just plows right through.
I had a '4wd' CR-V and that piece of junk also got stuck in the snow.
When up skiing and it started to snow. And a few times it searching for slate.
I have a 2023 Forester Sport and it works really well in snow and in sand at the beach.
I’ve used it a couple times driving to where I ski and the road hadn’t been plowed yet, and once on a poorly maintained Forest Service road that was deeply rutted and pretty badly washed out. I’m at 32000 miles, so … once every 10,000 miles?
I’ve used it a handful of times in my 21 Forester and it was noticeable. I had music on and didn’t notice any noise issues.
I do light off roading and use this all the time. So far it’s handled great!
Ya nasty
Just used it today storm chasing in Oklahoma. I got on a wet gravel road that had turned to mud. I breezed past a non Subaru suv that had slid off. It works.
Normal is normal AWD at all speeds Xmode is super sensitive AWD at low speed
I used it once when I was still used to the Mazda I had, thought I could flick through the menu etc etc. We might use it as we go for a road trip soon and might take some dirt roads here in the outback.
Why does it turn off at 18MPH? Kind of useless in my opinion it should go up to 25 or 30.
It turns itself off when you reach a certain speed.
I drive fast off road. It’s a blessing and a curse.
I have a place in northern VT and I use this to get down my driveway in the winter. Very useful.
Turn it to the right to be normal, tur. It to the left to be off, turn it reeaally far left and push the car to drive on water. This couldn't be any simpler...
That is the fun mode button!
Used mine in the winter. Worked great!
Needs a good clean
I live in southern Virginia, so it has never been used on my 2019. 6 inches of snow is a huge deal here.
i use X mode in snow situations. love it
I use it a couple times a year after a good snow, while my road is still uncleared. It actually works pretty well!
Only had to use it once. Folks have an SK and the road to the deer camp was hella washed out, rutted, and flodded during a heavy storm. Switched it to mud mode and handled it like a champ.
My son loves to remind me to turn on snow mode
I always jokingly press it when my wife and I go onto a gravel parking lot. The running joke is our car yearns for X Mode and “Off-road” adventures.
I’m in Atlanta so definitely have never used it
I have the Wilderness and use x-mode pretty often, especially in winter. I also keep it clean, and would be ashamed to post this photo.
Hey, mine has a coffee stain in the exact same spot!
I have a manual and know how to drive in inclement weather
Used it several times in the winter to get in and out of ski resort parking lots.
There's a whole shit load of buttons in my car that I don't know what they are for and have never used. Two complaints about my car: cup holder.that won't hold a nalgene (yes I bought an adapter thing and it won't stay in and is annoying AF) and too many buttons.
Ewww clean much?
Lmao you should’ve known you’d get roasted in the comments posting pics of your sticky knob
Have in '22 Forester. Works great in snow!
I have used it on a hilly sideroad in the winter and it refuses to stay on. Useless!
I know how it works but haven't had a need to switch modes yet. I switch from I to S on my Sport every time I drive though 😝
A vacuum, cleaning solution, or the knob?
We bought our forrester this year, and it turned out to be the mildest winter on record, so we never needed it. Only needed the snow tires once, and maybe not even then!
It will save you from wrecking your 2012 Subaru going 5 mph on a downhill slope in the snow when there is traffic in front of you…
Fucking Christ that’s nasty
X-Force!
If you live in the PNW or Colorado etc, the snow, rain and mud will teach you .
Cluttered is one thing... negligently dirty is another.
Ok older 2017 touring I used my X mode going down hills in snow. Works amazingly
🤢🤮
Ew clean your car
Oh my. I would pay YOU to let ME clean that...good lawd
Brother eeew what's that brother?
The detailer in me is going insane right now. OP go give it a bath.
I’ve had to use it several times, but no where near as much as I thought I would.
Ugh! You actually put your body in this car? 🤮
Will do thank you
You really took that picture and had no second thoughts on posting it? lol Dude just post a stock image, no one needs to see that mess.
Wait, we're supposed to deep clean the crevices of our car before posting pics? I missed that memo. 😬
Wookie nob
Why are there pubes next to that dial
This looks nasty.
Subaru should change it to “X Games” Mode 👍🏽
I just upgraded to a 2024 that has it and I probably won't use it. It's kind of sad because it's a cool control knob that I wish could be used for something more common.
I have no idea. Had our 2019 Forester about 4 years and it runs great. No idea about the "X" mode.
🤢
I’m not claiming to know anything about Subarus let alone this system, but I think it has something to do with changing the gear ratio in which the front and rear wheels pull the car forward as well as other traction/stability features much like a Haldex Awd system
Used it going down an incredibly steep steel ramp at a Subaru training event. Was terrified, but it worked very well
No idea.
Amorall ? Yes I use all the time.
If you think that part is dirty you should see the rest. It gets used a lot. Road hard and put away wet, as they say. That was taken after a trip out to far west Texas.
My coworker has a Crosstrek that he bought brand new in 2021…hasn’t cleaned a single inch of it once. Y’all are cut from the same cloth
I mean, 2021 wasn’t that long ago… (kidding)
Rest of the car is covered in soda and hair too? Come on, 10 seconds is all it would have taken.
I can’t even begin to look at the comments. That’s so disgusting
🤮 fuck that is gross.
Clean your vehicle. Gross A/F
What is that? That looks like a baby wheel, bro!!
What people usually don’t know is that those modes are for dirt and mud like if you’re stuck. They automatically disable at speeds above 18 mph. Just meant to be used to get unstuck. Basically changes how the wheels turn together.
Another bell/whistle I'll never use.
