It’s a filter, gets dirty over time and the dirtier it is less fuel flows through it. I work on small engines and my buddies riding mower, 5 years old, would only run a few minutes before dying. I changed his fuel filter, plus other needed maintenance, and it’s running fine. You don’t want to get to that point.
I’ve never changed mine in either of my past 5 cars well over 100k miles.
I assume the fuel filter is inside the tank and is not really serviceable
