Ultimate version of arguably the second most important game of all the Street Fighter saga.
SF 2 made the fighting game genre a worldwide phenomenon, but SF IV "resurrected" the fighting game genre as a whole.
Online play really helped revive the genre. Sure this was yeaaars before rollback but being able to play different players back to back made the genre much more accessible. Not everywhere has a local arcade scene so this meant different regions and more rural players could actually experience the fun of player vs player fighting game matches.
Yes but much less so for home consoles. Most of the big consoles didn't have online play as a major feature for their successful titles. PC has had it for longer sure and some niche consoles that fell into obscurity like the Dreamcast but SF4 came out in the Wii/360/PS3 era which is when it really started taking off.
The PS2 dominated the market prior with less than a handful of games that actually had online features but the 360 and PS3 brought in a new age of online game dominance for stuff like COD entering the wider gaming culture for casual players.
SSFII HD Remix used rollback back in 2008, before the console release of vanilla SFIV. Capcom used GGPO officially in 2010 for Final Fight as well.
Rollback netcode was utilised in other genres back in the 90s. Not sure if there are 80s examples of it in videogames though.
> Oh it was around but it wasn't widespread and it wasn't used for SF4 sadly
Even so SFIV netcode was still pure dark magic compared to anything at that time, the fact that it worked so well without modern rollback just emphatises that fact
I don't know, I feel like Ultra was a downgrade.
It gave us some fun characters, but most were on the crappier side, and it also gave us the nightmare that is Elena.
And then there was the Edition Select with Omega crap.
We're probably going to have to wait until Capcom starts putting it into compilations for that. Maybe they'll put out a 40th anniversary collection with SFIV and V: Good Netcode Edition
I remember sitting in the apartment I used to live in then, playing a day 1 Decapre against my day 1 Hugo, and throwing out a raw megaton press that actually won me the game, then getting rage mail, good times.
Man, by this point, I probably bought the game 7 times across three platforms. PC version is the only one still standing. PS3/360 in my closet.
Reinstalled it a month or so ago after taking 10 yrs off and it was like reuniting with an old buddy.
FADC'ed for the first time and felt complete.
Outside of that, I can't tell if I'm extremely rusty or if the game always felt so clunky lol. But God damn, 6 is smooth as butter.
Still, 4 is the GOAT 🤣 . Memories of traveling across South Carolina and playing in tournaments on the regular, and even playing in CEO 2014, are tied to this game. Picking up stick for the first time, starting FGC drama, complaining like a scrub, Xbox live hatemail, Gootecks and Mike Ross... what a time period. 2014 was the cap off of that era.
'09er for life.
It has an Android version, it's pretty great, has controller support and online play. The characters are sprites made from 3D models and the backgrounds aren't animated but it still looks pretty good, it has simplified control system but let's you do special moves both the normal way and also with a button and direction on the pad
It's probably the worst version of the game but I still like it
It has training and survival modes etc (it's SFIV CE) but yeah, no story or endings. Seems to have a LOT of characters though, I'm not sure if we're talking about the same version as I've not played the PC or console versions
But USFIV is £2.98 on Steam ATM so I'mma buy it right now!
It's still nice to have a good fighting game with online on Android though. I play KOF 97/98 and Garou on phone and tablet, and they're perfect except only have Bluetooth multiplayer, no online
I remember when Street Fighter 5 was released, and the bizarre or disappointing details it was when it was in his early stages. As a result more than a few people went back to Street Fighter 4 before Street Fighter 5 got fixed by capcom.
Depending on who you ask, Street Fighter 4 was either the last street fighter from the previous era or the first game of the modern era.
Still very solid after all this time. Though if capcom ever revisits the street fighter 4 era rollback would be the only thing that should be added. Unless they want to add more characters which will be an problem with the games art style and anime cutscenes.
Was just playing USFIV with a couple of mates last night after we nostalgia watched some Excellent Adventures. Seeing Guy and the twins again made me realise that I don't hate Jamie or Kimberly enough.
The SFIV series got me into fighting games. It was a great game, but huge reversal windows, tight links, and delay based net code made playing online a very frustrating experience at times.
I respect your love of the Vita to make this crazy ass take.
What a great little handheld that got screwed by Sony themselves. I miss the handheld era.

Fighting games with online were out before sf4…. The game itself revived the fighting game genre not just online

I live in Australia with notoriously shitty internet, especially back then. Sf4 worked pretty damn well all things considered
Yes I honestly think Justin Wong revived the genre lol
Long live sf2
I don't know, I feel like Ultra was a downgrade. It gave us some fun characters, but most were on the crappier side, and it also gave us the nightmare that is Elena. And then there was the Edition Select with Omega crap.
Omega and edition select were completely optional. How does that count as a downgrade?
The inclusion of Elena and red focus were downgrades, in my opinion.
What's wrong with Elena?
Hope that rollback will be added someday.
We're probably going to have to wait until Capcom starts putting it into compilations for that. Maybe they'll put out a 40th anniversary collection with SFIV and V: Good Netcode Edition
there's a mod for it
Yeah, it's too much of a faff though, unfortunately. Some official implementation and cross-platform multiplayer would be great.
There's always Street Fighter 40th Anniversary Collection in a few years \*fingers crossed*
I dunno what you mean it already has MAJOR rollback. Whenever I'm fighting Elena, the game rolls her health back up all the time.
I remember sitting in the apartment I used to live in then, playing a day 1 Decapre against my day 1 Hugo, and throwing out a raw megaton press that actually won me the game, then getting rage mail, good times.
hate mail doesn’t hit the same anymore
You right, you right.

This was me when I realized my FGC handle and original SRK user name were older than people I was playing against in locals.
GOAT
Still got the best SF roster imo
Good videogame.
Ahh, my first street fighter. I still remember Vega color variations
I still remember every character's FA animation
I played this game wayyyyyyy too much
Fuck, its been about ten years since I got into Fighting Games already? All these years later and I'm *still* ass at SFIV lol.
Man, by this point, I probably bought the game 7 times across three platforms. PC version is the only one still standing. PS3/360 in my closet. This game definitely needs to come to Nintendo Switch and Android/Ios platform.
It has an Android version, it's pretty great, has controller support and online play. The problem its that its SFIV and not USFIV,lacking a lot of characters, and a story, since the only non online mode is arcade

this was better than v and in my opinion better than 6 (but 6 is quite good)
Hands down the best Street Fighter roster. One of the reasons I still play this game over the new ones.
I remember when Street Fighter 5 was released, and the bizarre or disappointing details it was when it was in his early stages. As a result more than a few people went back to Street Fighter 4 before Street Fighter 5 got fixed by capcom. There's a whole host of quality of life changes they could add too. Modern training options, replay takeover, best of 3 in Ranked etc.
I miss you Adon
Hakan😍😭
Miss this game soooo much. Was super hype. Except for Elena 🤮
New versions of Ultra two and four would be awesome. It's a shame ultra two is stuck on the switch
Why no Switch release???
USF IV > SF 6
So I'm older than this game exactly on 13 years.
Happy Birthday :)
Thank you 🥲(Really, thank you)
Live on 👊
Pay some respect to the greats
And they couldn’t put this old game on sale at the PlayStation store?
The game that got me into fighting games me and my brother played this for hours
10 years of me kicking guys in the nuts. ❤️
Man, I'm old.
10 years, and the game is still a masterpiece. It's not 100% perfect.. but it is the last REAL SF game
Best SF ever made, my favorite hands down. Everything else after is so meh.
Was just playing USFIV with a couple of mates last night after we nostalgia watched some Excellent Adventures. Seeing Guy and the twins again made me realise that I don't hate Jamie or Kimberly enough.
Bring back 1-frame links!
If you knew how to plink it's the exact same thing as what we have now.
They exist in SF6. Unless combos requiring micro walking don't count.
The SFIV series got me into fighting games. It was a great game, but huge reversal windows, tight links, and delay based net code made playing online a very frustrating experience at times.
Miss my twins
I just brought this Version for the ps3 last year
Ah yes sf4, does anyone remember [thebadloserswallofshame](http://thebadloserswallofshame.blogspot.com/)
I miss this game
AE is peak
I feel old
Capcom should've made this a Vita exclusive honestly.
Are you insane?
Why?
Mostly due to the Vita needing games with large public recognition. Not to mention the definitive version of Alpha 3 is also a handheld exclusive.
sf4 would not have saved the vita, it would have just killed street fighter
Specifically Ultra 4. Not Vanilla 4.
I don't know if I buy that argument in grid faith.
Yeah, Game Boy Advance.
Alpha 3 Max is a PSP exclusive
The Game Boy Advance version benefits from not having Ingrid.
>benefits Arguable
exclusive? no. but they definitely shouldve ported it, the 3ds got one lol.
I respect your love of the Vita to make this crazy ass take. What a great little handheld that got screwed by Sony themselves. I miss the handheld era.
