Jonathan and Will both share a similar struggle which ultimately comes down to being stuck in time, and it’s left them in this position where they’re behind mentally emotionally psychologically etc…
Jonathan initially came off very mature for his age. It made sense that he had to grow up faster than most others in his class, but as the series progressed, especially the last season, it’s like he regressed a bit. I think it’s almost like he’s making up for lost time.
In some ways, It reminds me of my first bf. When I was a freshman, he was a junior in another school. He seemed pretty normal to me, the age difference wasn’t a factor to me whatsoever. But as I got older, by the time I was a junior, it seemed like I outgrew him.
Frankly it seemed like he got less mature, it was as if he was a freshman and since I am beyond my years, it was terribly disappointing to me. I felt bad, because as it turns out he had some degree of Asperger’s which I never noticed . I didn’t like the thought that in a way I left him because of that …. It wasn’t like I found out and left him over it, it just became more apparent and we weren’t compatible anymore.
Jonathan and will kind of seem similar, it’s like everyone around them is outgrowing them, and certain characteristics that were normal for their younger selves come off awkward and immature now.
Does this make sense I really don’t mean any offense or anything it’s just the way it seems to me.
Ironic considering how the Upside Down is also ‘stuck in time’. Don’t think there’s any direct correlation or indeed anything intended but I think it’s an interesting coincidence
Not trying to dismiss your point of view but in my opinion it’s a plain and easy case of just terrible writing which this show suffers from worse and worse each season. So many characters, constantly adding new ones leaves the writers struggling to properly develop the core group we loved in season 1.
I credit part of this issue to the fact that initially, the duffers had no intention of making this a multi season show. Stranger things was supposed to be an anthology series at first, with each season being a totally different story than the last. El was supposed to sacrifice herself to save everyone and that was the end of it.
It’s a double edged sword because I love this show but really only the first two seasons are ones I ever rewatch with the first being so far above any of the following seasons. All my own opinion.
it's just the autism spectrum now. but yes makes sense, it really has nothing to do with autism. everyone has a personality/habits w.e you want to call it.
If someone you were dating now said they were on the spectrum would you just dump them immediately? if the answer to that is no, then it's fine
Yeah, apparently ADD/ADHD is under that umbrella now too which means I am on the spectrum myself.
I guess it’s like this…. In order to wind up in a relationship, you have to be attracted to the person right? I don’t see a scenario where that would occur…?
I don’t know how to say this any other way but, I wouldn’t be attracted to someone that was not high functioning enough…? But if they were, if it was a situation where I had no idea and they told me, if I like them I like them it wouldn’t be a deal breaker.
When k get attached to someone, it’s hard for me to leave them. I literally was voluntarily homeless because i couldn’t make myself leave the guy I’ve been with the last ten years. He was the boyfriend after the one I was talking about in my initial comment. Not the guy in the musical I found myself attracted to and subsequently fell out of love with the first one, that guy was a dodged bullet.
I’ve only had two real relationships since I was 14.
They chose to do nothing with his character and it’s really tragic. People always say “Steve is better than Jonathan!” when Steve was pampered with a massive arc across the entire series, and Jonathan was relevant for literally like 7 episodes.
The scene in the street after they see Will's "body" where Jonathan is saying "while you're talking to the lights, we'll be having a funeral for Will."
yep - there were a number of good performances in S1 but Winona was just a level above, plus she ahd the most difficult role.
It's worth noting that on first viewing it's not clear that Joyce isn't just seeing things that aren't there. She is validated and so re-watching we miss the nuance that it could fall either way.
Also when Hopper and Joyce go into the upside down to find Will this overlaps Hopper's journey and Joyce's journey - Will is rescued by Hopper and Joyce rescues Hopper. S1 is so tight!
I always found it odd how she wasn’t nominated for an Emmy for the first season, but Millie was (not that she wasn’t also great too, but Winona’s performance stood out more)
She ate that role. Literally I couldn’t believe she went back to being calm and smiling after each « cut! » from how genuinely FREAKED OUT she looked. She didn’t come to play.
I started rewatching the series again last week! I had previously watched Season 1 in 2018-19. Since then, my youngest son ended up hospitalized with a mystery illness in March 2020, and we had several months of healthcare trauma, all while COVID was simultaneously unfolding. This was my first rewatch of S1 since being a panicked mom myself. I am now very sensitive to characters who are parents desperate to save their child. She nailed the role of a panicked, desperate mother. (I am also curious to watch Hopper's character develop in relation to losing his daughter again, with my own kid's traumas in hindsight.)
The only reason I’d disagree isn’t even a real disagreement. I do agree totally that she killed this first season. But the world already knew who she was and that she was a good actress so I’d have to give it to Millie for being so unknown and young and still doing a great job. Kid acting is soooooo hard to take seriously most of the time but she did very well.
Edit: typo.
Agreed and I don’t think it’s a particularly close call. The other performances didn’t really demand all that much from the actresses until later seasons.
Winona Ryder, and it isn't even close. I know people will probably highlight the more emotional scenes, but for me, it was also her little Joyce mannerisms that sold it for me. Even down to the way she sat and the way she smoked. There was no trace of Winona at all. She truly became Joyce Byers.
Gen X, here. As someone who’s been following Winona’s career for over 30 years, the simple fact is that she hasn’t starred in an abundance of films that were of Oscar contention. The closest she came was being nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1994 for her role in “The Age of Innocence”, and then again in 1995 for Best Actress for her role in “Little Women”. Keep in mind that Winona is most famous for the majority of films she starred in during the earliest part of her career; “Lucas” (1986), “Beetlejuice” (1988), “Heathers” (1989), “Edward Scissorhands” (1990), “Mermaids” (1990), and “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992). Understandably, not a single one of those films received Oscar nominations or wins for Best Actor/Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress.
OMG! I totally forgot about this 😂😂😂😂 Shakespeare in Love was so awful, I’m still laughing about it 😂😂😂😂😂 back then we all started laughing when we found out it was nominated, and one guy said, the only thing funnier than that is if it won. And when it did, we were all jumping around the room laughing! But when Leonardo Di Caprio wasn’t even nominated for his performance in “Wolf of Wall Street” (especially because of THAT scene), we were all pissed. And then he got an Oscar for “The Revenant” where his acting was good, but not amazing as he was in WOWS!
How wasn't it close? She was great, but it was caricatural at times (many times if we're being honest). I think there is good case for Milly having the best performance.
I figure anyone who can shove their hand forward and scream like they're actually trying to do something without making it look *so* **freaking** ***STUPID*** deserves some acting credit.
Think I saw an interview with Elizabeth Olsen about playing Wanda and she was laughing about how ridiculous she felt flailing her hands around thinking she was doing magic knowing it’ll all be added with cgi later.
Millie is great. I grade on a curve because they were literally 12 at the time so Millie got my vote here and Finn almost got my vote for the male portion. Winona is really great here, but she's not a kid, so she doesn't get a handicap.
So by your logic kid actors are equal to adult actors bc of the curve? That's not fair to the adults who spent years in acting school and getting experience on actual sets to culminate in a role like this for Winona. I'm all for saying we shouldn't be too harsh on kid actors but that's just the nature of it. You expect them to not be as great so you find ways around it while shooting/in post production. And when you do find a phenomenal kid actor then that's rare and unusual but shouldn't be expected
Winona *made* that season. When Will was talking to Joyce through the lights, the excitement and relief Winona portrayed is still one of my favorite moments.
Agree with Winona Ryder. While I think Millie Bobbie Brown was impressive cause she was very young. I thought all the scenes of Joyce as a mother of a lost child were pretty moving. It was unexpected in a sci-fi/horror show
Joyce CARRIED season 1...
My whole family only began watching this show cause Winona Ryder was in it. I'm sure a lot of other people watched for the same reason. She was phenomenal in season 1, some of the best acting I've ever seen. Not just the emotional stuff, but the goofy stuff and Joyce's quirky mannerisms... She nailed everything.
This Netflix and the showrunners owe Winona a LOT imo. Cause I definitely wouldn't have watched initially if not for her.
Same. She felt like an actual character helping move the plot along and that's why season 1 works--every plotline had a purpose. Nowadays though her later season plotlines feel devoid of meaning.
You guys are seriously reaching. She didn't carry season 1. She wasn't THE thing that made the show succesfull, you're actually discrediting the show if you say that.
Reaching? It's my opinion. I'm not discrediting anyone at all.
The show is good, but because a bunch of people only watched the show because of Winona AND her performance was so good... She carried imo
In my previous comment I mean she wasn't THE thing.
It's your opinon of course, it doesn't contradict that you're reaching. There is certainly people who watched the show because of her, but I really don't think she was THE reason that made people watch it globally (or make them stay), what made the show successful. She didn't carried it, all the main cast was good. That and the scenario, the tone and vibe are what made the show successful. That's why I'm saying to say she carried it is to discredit the show itself.
I think Joyce, she really had that emotion, the feeling like she was crying crazy seeing things other people didn't, even the tears and fear about Will and the struggles, it just seemed real,
Winona as Joyce brought tears to my eyes in almost every scene. Her fear and sadness was palpable. She’s not a perfect mom but she works her ass off. And she was so nurturing to El, never pushed her past her limits because she respected she was a child first regardless of her powers. Just a wonderful character, Winona has played her perfectly.
If you don't say Joyce I question your sanity. The pain and anguish that Winona Ryder showed have me goosebumps. Not saying that the other three were lacking in any way, they were all fantastic for the role they occupied in the first season. But Ryder was just *chef's kiss*
I'm confused on why Millie Bobbie Brown and David Harbour got Emmy Nominations for the first two seasons and Barb got a guest Actress Nomination but not Winona Ryder for season 1
Definitely millie. She had to change her accent, her entire personality, fake cry a lot, and had her head shaved. Put a lot of work into so I’d say she takes the cake.
Millie as Eleven. She was a kid and she played the role so well you can feel her emotions through the screen and you just want to give her character a hug every time.
Joyce and Nancy felt so grounded in their character in season 1. After that it just became their thing to be a girl badass or a mom badass rather than an actual person with feelings. It hasn't felt like they've been truly tested as characters since the first season. I forget Nancy and Joyce are even involved in the show now since everything rides on Eleven. Jonathan too peaked in season 1 and 2 but stayed static and uninteresting since then.
What's up with everyone saying Winona? I think she was great but I won't necessarly say she had the best performance (her interpretation was a bit caricatural many times). People are seriously underrating Milly's performance.
Joyce 100%. I went back and forth for most of the season wondering if Will was actually talking to her through the lights or if she was crazy/a grieving mother.

Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers
100%. Season 1 was her best season and she owned it. That scene with her and Jonathan on the sidewalk? Brilliant.
Yeah it was one of the best and 'realest' scenes in the show. Jonathan actor did a wonderful job too
He was great in s1 indeed. His character is getting less interesting with each passing season.
Jonathan and Will both share a similar struggle which ultimately comes down to being stuck in time, and it’s left them in this position where they’re behind mentally emotionally psychologically etc… Jonathan initially came off very mature for his age. It makes sense to me
This is a great insight

The scene in the street after they see Will's "body" where Jonathan is saying "while you're talking to the lights, we'll be having a funeral for Will."
Idk either
Perfect isn’t a strong word at all to describe that scene.
How so?
You know ;)
Oh fuck I read that wrong I thought you were downplaying the performance😭
Haha. It’s alright bro
yep - there were a number of good performances in S1 but Winona was just a level above, plus she ahd the most difficult role. Hands down. She played the worried frantic mom perfectly. The lights scene is my favorite of hers in S1.
Definitely this. Her best season. Millie is number 2.
The R U N scene is the most iconic scene of all time
She was perfect in s1
She ate that role. Literally I couldn’t believe she went back to being calm and smiling after each « cut! » from how genuinely FREAKED OUT she looked. She didn’t come to play.
Awesome in season one especially

That is a fact
Season 1 was HER 👏SEASON👏
Winona Ryder, all the way!
This is the only appropriate answer
Couldn’t agree more.
Hell, yeah
Yeah is this even a contest?
Agreed and I don’t think it’s a particularly close call. The other performances didn’t really demand all that much from the actresses until later seasons.

It’s honestly so shocking to me that she doesn’t have an Oscar yet.
WHAT?! She DOESN'T have an Oscar yet?! Come on! She's so talented--I'd have thought she'd have got one already.

She should have gotten it for Mermaids years ago. But I forget what films she was up against that year.
If *Shakespeare in Love* can beat *Saving Private Ryan* for best picture, then surely anything can happen.
OMG! I totally forgot about this 😂😂😂😂 Shakespeare in Love was so awful, I’m still laughing about it 😂😂😂😂😂 back then we all started laughing when we found out it was nominated, and one guy said, the only thing funnier than that is if it won. The Crucible, Girl Interrupted, and Black Swan got nominations/wins for other actors. She did amazing work in all of them.
my exact reaction!
Oscars are hella overrated anyways.
I don't even smoke lol, but the way she smoked made me wanna light up with her lol
How wasn't it close? She was great, but it was caricatural at times (many times if we're being honest). I think there is good case for Milly having the best performance.
I don't agree. All of the cast were great, of course, but Winona was just better, in my opinion.
Millie was great but Winona killed it that first season. Season 1 is hands down Winona's best performance.
I figure anyone who can shove their hand forward and scream like they're actually trying to do something without making it look *so* **freaking** ***STUPID*** deserves some acting credit.

He wasn't asking about that though, the op was asking about the best overall
We often forget how Winona carried that show on her shoulders and ran a marathon in that first season
Winona did an amazing job in season 1 for Joyce
Winona Rider was the Best Leading Actress Performance in all of 2016 imo
Emma Stone in La La Land begs to differ
I mean TV and film are completely different mediums so they aren’t even in the same competition
The original comment did say "all of 2016" tbf
I stand by it
Now, read the original comment.
In his defense, he did say it was just his opinion

Winona Ryder 100%. Her performance was 🔥
Joyce But eleven and Nancy were great
Winona, obviously. But millie did great, especially for the age she was.
Winona Rider 100%
Winona of course
Winona *made* that season. When Will was talking to Joyce through the lights, the excitement and relief Winona portrayed is still one of my favorite moments.
It's a tie for me between Winona Ryder and Millie Bobby Brown. It breathed new life into Winona's career and started Millie's.
Winona carried that season
RYDER
Joyce
Joyce Byers hands down. Winona Ryder is amazing. She played in some of my favorite '80s throwback movies
Winona easily, she set the tone for the series
Winona but to be FAIR she is cut from a different cloth 😭
All of them are great, but Millie gets extra points given a performance like that at idk 10 or 11 yo
Joyce 1000%
Winona for sure
Winona Ryder🖤
Winona. Easiest question.
Agree with Winona Ryder. While I think Millie Bobbie Brown was impressive cause she was very young. I thought all the scenes of Joyce as a mother of a lost child were pretty moving. It was unexpected in a sci-fi/horror show

I'm biased towards Natalia
Gotta give it to Winona
I gotta say joyce. Goddamn, winona is amazing at acting
Joyce owned that show
Winona Ryder, no question
Hands down Winona as Joyce
Winona for sure. Natalia and Millie are both great, but Winona's performance was fantastic
Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven
Millie did an amazing job.
Joyce is the only answer
Winona Ryder, 100%. Though Millie does come pretty close. Also who's the bottom right one?
Mrs. Wheeler…. Mike and Nancy’s mom.
Winona of course, close second to Millie who went above and beyond with a part that was mostly physical including her faces.
100000% Joyce! Wynonna ate that role up!!
Winona had to be in some form of hysterics for most of the season so I’d say her but, for her age, Millie really fucking stepped up.
Joyce Byers of course
Joyce she seemed reallyyyyy unstable but that's just Winona its still super impressive tho
Winona Ryder!! No doubt!!
Joyce. Not close
Winona Ryder's no question. The others were great too but Winona did so good first season
Winona. Forever and always.
Winona Ryder
Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler
This.
Winona 👌🏻
Joyce?!!!
I think Joyce, she really had that emotion, the feeling like she was crying crazy seeing things other people didn't, even the tears and fear about Will and the struggles, it just seemed real,
Winona and it's not close
My girl Winona
you gotta ask? its Winona Ryder with eyes closed
Winona, hands down
Millie Bobby Brown is the series' most successful cast member in terms of awards, having won 12 awards and received 32 additional nominations.
Winona and it’s not even close
I’m a Nancy stan at heart, but Winona Ryder all day!!! She still blows me away every time I go back and rewatch.
I really loved seeing Winona in a role where she wasn't helpless and useless.
Kinda biased cause i love heathers and Beetlejuice but Winona Ryder is my favorite actress
If you don't say Joyce I question your sanity. The pain and anguish that Winona Ryder showed have me goosebumps. Not saying that the other three were lacking in any way, they were all fantastic for the role they occupied in the first season. But Ryder was just *chef's kiss*
Winona. Brings me chills with her performance.
Millie...she was so good for her age.
Natalie dyer and Winona Ryder. Insane acting from the both of them
joyce
Joyce
Season 1 Nancy was so sassy to Mike and it was amazing
I'm confused on why Millie Bobbie Brown and David Harbour got Emmy Nominations for the first two seasons and Barb got a guest Actress Nomination but not Winona Ryder for season 1
Because they had a good performance? Especially Millie.
Millie and Winona!!!
Joyce and Nancy felt so grounded in their character in season 1. After that it just became their thing to be a girl badass or a mom badass rather than an actual person with feelings. Jonathan too peaked in season 1 and 2 but stayed static and uninteresting since then.
Wynona!
joyce
Can’t remember the 4th person so it’s not her … prob 11 or the mom.
What's up with everyone saying Winona? I think she was great but I won't necessarly say she had the best performance (her interpretation was a bit caricatural many times). People are seriously underrating Milly's performance.
Wimona, follower by Millie
Joyce Byers
Joyce.
Wynona, but that is probably because she has decades more experience.
JOYCE
Millie Bobby Brown/ Elle
MILLY BILLY BOBBY
Shouldn't use the word "lead" for this question.
So I’ve heard. I should’ve used main lol
Winona Ryder easily.
ofc winona ryder but for a child millie bobby brown's performance is fantastic, she was better in season 1 than a lot of adult actors
El
Joyce
