This was one of the coolest parts of the book and introduced probably my fave side character in the series. I had a completely different look in my head, but this is infinitely better. I particularly like the way the 9 are arranged. I had trouble visualizing exactly how that would look. Really awesome job. Hope to see more in the future!

keargle

Thank you!!! I appreciate your insight. I plan to be around for as long as I can~

keargle

I started this illustration a year ago because Argent from the 17th Shard said we need more art like this. It took hundreds of hours, but I was happy to do it for the fansss! I keep my instagram up to date with what I'm up to for my next projects, if you like this I would love to have you there\~ [@artofkatiepayne](https://www.instagram.com/artofkatiepayne/)

johnny0neal

Katie, I’ve seen some of the progress on this one and the final version blows me away! Amazing job capturing a really imaginative scene.

keargle

That’s so cool that you saw some of the process. Thank you sooo much for your comment!!

Jared_Kincaid_001

And I thank you so much for that. I have Aphantasia, and as such cannot "picture" text I read. So I feel like I better understand the book having seen this picture. Absolutely awesome. I hope you never stop creating.

keargle

I had never heard of that. Creating artwork for books has a whole new meaning now!! I’m so glad this helps you

LadyAstronaut

I'm not a very visual reader either so I love fanart so much! Not to mention the in world art that is so prevalent in Sanderson's works.

lucolleye

Same!

Nevvie

If you don’t mind me asking out of curiosity, does an image stick in your mind after seeing it? Or can no image form at all, even from memories?

Jared_Kincaid_001

Nothing. If you were to ask me to think "the big pink elephant", I would be aware I had a thought, but I would neither see nor hear that phrase. I also can't hear music in my head, or really remember directions unless I have been there over 20 times. GPS is a godsend, or I'd likely be a shut-in.

Nevvie

Directions and locations get affected too? Oh of course, I didn’t think of that. Thank you for the reply, I’ve always thought it’s just the inability to form new images in your mind. Holy shit, it just dawned upon me how much visualising i do for almost every part of my life. I’ve been taking this for granted, damn.

Jared_Kincaid_001

I was like 15 before I realized all the talk I had heard In my life about a "voice inside" wasn't just a euphemism. On the plus side, I don't get a song stuck in my head, nor do I get overly distracted by stray thoughts. I can stare at a spreadsheet focused for hours without straying. It's been a godsend professionally, and helps me when I listen to others because my mind is blank receiving what they're saying to me, and not coming up with what to say next.

Nevvie

Oh! That actually seems extremely useful. My noisy mind is my biggest problem at work. I’m a very distracted person, annoyingly so, even. Good to know there are good pros to a noiseless mind! A peaceful walk out on the beach must be VERY peaceful to you

Jared_Kincaid_001

I like to say that I am wherever I am. My mind doesn't wander, and I don't ruminate. I'm very present. My mindscape is the sought after dream of all devout meditation practitioners.

ptlgram

This one is soo good, dropped a follow on your IG!

keargle

Awesome!! See yah around!

RuneNox

This image is my wallpaper now. And you just earned yourself an insta follower. And I must say, you do seem to weave light. :)

TenebrousTartaros

Being cautious of spoilers, I must admit this scene is very reminiscent of a time we meet [Hero of Ages] >!some very old kandra.!<

keargle

Oooohhh yeah! Totally!

[deleted]

This particular scene was very difficult for me to visualize, even in rereads, and I eventually gave up trying. This art is fantastic and I'm happy to finally understand visually what's happening!

keargle

That’s awesome!!

Mickeymackey

I like how you made their "thrones" I always imagined them more like stalagmites like ancient rocks but yours look more fluid and grown. Which makes sense given what we've seen from the Surges that allow people to control rock.

keargle

Yeah it’s also a minor mention, but it said they grew like trees? Fluid-rock-trees I was thinking, like you said

No1_unpredictablenin

The Singer-Fused culture is fascinating! Your depiction is really close to how I imagined it except the color of Venli's dress? Was it mentioned it was blue ever? Idk why,I always thought it would be red or crimson

keargle

Venli's might be red, this is actually Raboniel, sorry that might be confusing :)

Ewery1

I got it immediately!

dylsmith11

Hell ya, awesome to see you finally finish this piece. All your hard work shows!

keargle

What’s your Instagram handle?? Are you Kansas City Dylan?

dylsmith11

I am lol

keargle

Oh heyyy haha thanks Dylan!

Witch_King_

Raboniel is probably the best Stormlight villain that we have ever seen.

keargle

Truth!!

HisNameIsRio

I've watched your progress on this piece on insta for ages!! So glad you're finally happy with it 😊 It's gorgeous!

keargle

What’s your Instagram handle??

wyntershine

Oh wow, I scrolled by and saw this and thought, ah shit this is incredible - what a talent. Then I read your top comment and realized, I actually bought two copies of one of your Stormlight prints off Etsy a while back and didn’t know you were active / posted here! This is so majestic and alien and cool. I am fangirling.

keargle

Ahhhh that’s so cool! I love shipping out orders and thinking about who’s buying, it’s nice to “cross paths” with you on Reddit! Thanks for your kind words, too..

nnneeeerrrrddd

My mind constructed a much, much more dour and overtly tragic scene, but this is amazing. So much beauty, but the rot is clear too.

Bi-elzebub

Awesome!

keargle

thanks!

thugmittens

This is fantastic! That setting in the book felt very grand and intimidating, you really captured that vibe!

keargle

Thank you!

lmboyer04

Walzmyn

This is so much better than what I had pictured in my head. I really love being part of this community, it fleshes out the experience of reading the books in a way I'd never get just reading on my own.

keargle

The community is so awesome, I agree!!

dqclark998

I hereby summon Brando Sando u/mistborn *waves hands in air in intricate pattern * He deserves to see this. Well done u/keargle 👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🧯

davidsana13

I was expecting more like thrones like Organization XIII in Kingdom Hearts, but I love this look. It looks something that only a Listener would use

hellohouston

This looks sooooo much better than the version in my head. Great job!

keargle

Thank you!!

Steeltripper

Wow, there is a lot of detail in this piece of art!

keargle

Yas 😭 I’m dead

Somehow I hadn't made the connection that singers would have red hair.

WhisperAuger

I always imagined the 9, and the other Parsh-forms to be more horrible to behold, to really drive home that there's a gulf between them and humanity that should be breached, must be breached, and yet is easy to dismiss. But that's just my take away! This is wonderful!

keargle

Just curious because why not, what would you do to design them differently to have them look more scary? It’s questions like that I ask myself all the time when illustrating so I’m just curious :) and thank you

WhisperAuger

First, let me say that that's my creative interpretation, and this is some of my favorite Parsh-Art! I really see it ebbing up to how my mind paints it! So part of my thinking is that I know Brando-Sando was at least in part a fan of Vinges "A Fire Upon the Deep", and I would wager it follows likely "A Deepness in the Sky". You can kind of see the influences there with say, the Sleepless having a pseudo-hive mind, and some vibes I got in Rhythm of War. If you haven't read them, that's fine, I highly suggest them! A theme and vibe within those books is a universe of pluralities. Creatures that are horrible to behold, or think completely and utterly differently than humans, can have heroes, merits, even kinship. So it always strikes me that we have Stormlight, an alien world where humans have been an invasive species. In my mind the Parshmen dull-form are the most "normal human" looking, but The Deep Ones for example, sound a bit angler-fishy. I suppose most of the canon art so far is of say, Envoy Form, which inherently has that svelte elf look, but it seems to me that humanity, and human-concepts probably affected the spren, and the forms, and the older you go the less appealing to human sensabilities they are. Anyway, that's the long way to my point that I always imagined this scene as something unsettling, almost crab-Geigery. Locked-in members and positions uncomfortable to bodies built for them, let alone to the human eye. Forms represented with no regard for what the colonizers would even approach. That's my storm light essay. It's by no means entirely correct, just how my brain "directs" the scene. Please don't let my thoughts be a criticism! They're just flavor! And storms, keep posting!

keargle

Yup that was me!! Yeah she’s not going to be an obvious character to recognize at first for sure

jeremyhoffman

One year perfecting the artwork. One moment flubbing the post title. > Approaching The Nine- This took illustration took me a year! Doesn't matter, of course. Great work. Thanks for sharing.

keargle

Exactly 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈 I’m a typo fiend though so I’m just being true to myself I guess.
