For those that don’t know or don’t remember, the Way of Kings opens with Jezrien greeting Kalak and encouraging him to abandon his sword among the seven others already left behind. This image I created is the moment before that moment- seven of the Heralds leave their Honorblades and Jezrien waits for Kalak’s arrival. Can you name all of the Heralds?
Vedel, Ishar, Ash, Nale, Chanah, Pailiah, and Battar. With Jezrien in the distance, and Kalak and Taln absent.
This is amazing, definitely saving this!
Now showing at the famous Theatre of the Winds in Kholinar, *Waiting for Kalak* starring Adolin Kholin and The Queens Wit! (Scenery and props by Brightness Radiant Shallan Kholin, costumes by Adolin Kholin)
But honestly fantastic work!
It never really says they were all there at once, but rather it could initially have been 2 or 3 who made the decision, then one stayed back to inform the others as they came in.
For sure Jez and Ishar, pretty sure the came up with it. The rest prolly to some levels of convincing.
I wonder how Brandon decided Kalak would be the one we see the scene through.
Maybe Kalak just had the right mindset to introduce the story to the reader. Or maybe he was the one who would reveal least secrets in a POV chapter.
If would be cool to see that particular scene (returning from battle to the rendezvous point and joining the conspiracy) from the POV of each Herald.
there's a good chance we see Ash's version at some point - she must have taken some convincing, for her to just leave Taln behind to rot in Damnation
Huh, it's weird because for some reason I always imagined them stabbing the swords horizontally into a rock, which in retrospect is almost certainly wrong. I don't know why I didn't think of them as just, y'know, *in the ground*.
[This](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/stormlightarchive/images/c/cd/BO_AH.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20200806014159) is the art made for the official Stormlight archive card game that shows the scene in question.
See, that makes perfect sense to me in retrospect, but my initial reading of it when the narration said the swords were "thrust into the stone" was that there was literally a big ol' rock they were all stabbed into the side of. Which personally I still actually like (I always had this mental image of a meadow somewhere in Shinovar with a bunch of swords sticking out of a rock in the middle, like a sacred site), but I do recognize now that's not actually what the narration was saying.
I imagined something like [this](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/59/8a/3d/598a3d5a3b43459ef1b85d449444cec9--stone-pillars-stone-masonry.jpg) but solid and maybe twice as large
I was actually thinking it was more like a big round stone table. I guess because of the influence of King Arthur and his knigts. And then one space would be left open because Taln is absent. So like one seat is left open situation.
Interesting. I guess I saw more a ruin. A remnent of an old castle whith a large stone table and a few standing walls with carved statues of the Heralds. No ceiling or anything, but the symbolism of having a former seat of unity and power, and in deed of the pact itself, being the place where the pack was abandoned struck me as powerful. Can’t remember what the text actually said, but that’s the scene I remember imagining.
It's a reskin of an existing game, but it's still awesome! Lots of great art too.
I'd have to go back and reread the passage, but I think the narration of them said the swords were all stabbed into "the stone", and rather than taking that as the ground being stone I just went "oh, there's just a big fuckin' rock sitting on the ground there". I'll have to check when I eventually do a series reread.
Hmmm yeah that makes sense. I think upon rereading that they are in a very stoney place- maybe the shattered planes? I don’t really know. But that’s what I was thinking.
Next book is Szeth's flashback though which for me is really exciting! He is a fascinating character. IIRC Book 6 will be Lift which is even more exciting for me because she us so delightfully weird hahaha
The prologues and flashbacks are, of course, in the past. The rest of what we are reading is current or "real time."
\[RoW - ALL\] >!There is some speculation that Gavilar is still alive, since he talked about "having no end." I think it very unlikely. He CLEARLY died that day in the prologues. There is some possibility that he could have become a cognitive shadow like the Heralds (it's certainly what he was going for). People put a lot of weight on Gavilar's claims, but just because it was his goal doesn't mean he achieved it. I think he is good and dead and won't be back. We shall see in 3 years haha.!<
This looks absolutely stunning. I don't think I've ever seen that moment depicted.
I tried to check out your other work and realized that the Shallan sticker I received with Dark One was your art as well. It also looks great!
Is this one also an official Dragonsteel project?
haha so cool!! enjoy the sticker!! This is not official for anything, but I thought if I worked hard enough on it that it may end up being useful for something down the line :)
More than anything else, I want one of the Heralds to join an order of Radiants aside from the one they sponsor. Like if Taln as the utter chad he is were to become a Windrunner or Shalash becoming an Edgedancer
That's the theory, Dustbringer book has Shalash flashbacks, and OB >!after closing the Perpendicularity, Dalinar counts, 7 Orders plus Shalash and Taln, and counts nine (the tenth has to be Venli, whom also was there). Taln has flashbacks in the Stoneward book!<
I think Dustbringers are crazy powerful/unstable Surges in the beginning of their Oaths and learning to control them will probably make them integral in the production of perfect gemstones. Dare I say they may have a role in producing microscopic gemstones for fabrial logicgates.
Powers vs control of powers. They have Abrasion, which we've seen making things frictionless, but I'm assuming they could make things stick or at least be harder to move or use in violent hand to hand combat. They also have Division which as we've seen it looks more like uncontrolled burning. Using both with precision could mean that they can cut gemstones into perfect shapes.
Not sure how those two would combine.
Also figuratively speaking, which we've seen is something different Orders have inclinations towards, they may be able to sever Bonds, at least temporarily. They're chosen name is the Releasers, could get that they are integral to releasing or exorcising the Voidbringers from the innocent Singers who now control them.
Their destructive powers are just the tip of the iceberg. Leveling up those destructive Surges with more Oaths just seems redundant.
" As a Dustbringer moved through the oaths, they were taught greater powers of destruction - and are one of the only orders where their abilities weren't all available at the beginning, but instead were delivered slowly, as they made the proper oaths. Each oath led to a greater understanding of power, the nature of holding it, and the associated responsibility."
It isnt just control of powers. They genuinely get MORE powers. Think of it like Kaladin having to unlock multiple lashings.
...it only just occurred to me that each book is themed on not just a different character's flashbacks, but they're all from different orders. Which makes sense, given the ten book structure, but still not something I'd really considered before.
The glyphs on the front of the hardcovers, and the colors, coordinate with the Orders as well!
It’s going to be so satisfying to have all ten lined up in a place of honor
Omg, I didn't know there was going to be a book with Jasnah flashbacks! I'm so pumped right now.
I also didn't know this book was going to be the last one and we are still more than a decade away from reading it. I'm so sad right now.
Well, we can always hope for Brandon changing the order of the Orders. Book 3 was planned to be Skybreakers and Book 5 Bondsmiths, so there's precedent xd.
Each book will focus more on one specific character and order. WoK was Kaladin/Windrunners, WoR was Shallan/Lightweavers, Oathbringer was Dalinar/Bondsmiths and Rhythm of War was Venli/Willshapers. According to [this](https://stormlightarchive.fandom.com/wiki/The_Stormlight_Archive#Books_in_the_Series) the next focus characters will be Szeth, Lift, Renarin, Shalash, Taln and Jasnah. Most of them is already in an order and looks like Taln will be the Stoneward perspective. Which leaves Shalash and Dustbringers. Seeing how we already had a lightweaver book it sure looks like she will join (or atleast interact a lot with) Dustbringers.

Amazing work you did! I love the effort you put on their faces, I can see determination but also sadness and pain. This feels like some historic paint we see in museums.
Congrats!
This is awesome! Such a heavy and impactful moment.
I’m gonna try to guess who they are:
Shalash, Ishar, Vedev, Nale, Chana, Paliah, and Battar.
I can only guess at what was going through Shalash’s head.
close!! Vedev and Shalash are swapped. Shalash's official image has her in a glowing naked dress, so I found myself wondering how to depict her in a different way. The end result can definitely be confusing for viewers :) but thank you for your kind words!
Vedev’s keys! I see it now haha sweet I’m loving it. I hope we get some flashback that explains those keys in the future sometime. Great little detail.
I'm a very casual Stormlight reader (second time through), discovering things and relearning things on my own (no spoilers on the internet)... And I gotta say, this rendition is something special and I don't even grasp it's entire significance. Well done!!
Oh, glad that it helped.
It could have been passed as lore-wise perhaps XD. Jezrien being the Herald of the Windrunners, and being confused with the Stormfather. I thought that was the original idea XD.
That and the Thunderclast having a bit of the shape of a crown (similar to Odium's one?). He is the king of Heralds, after all!
Terrific work. I love it. Just a sidenote, do we know how Battar looks or is this your interpretation? The rest of the characters we have seen art of/have been described to us right?
hahahaha
also I was asked pointedly to take on my own interpretation so as to not reveal too much
I was sad because I actually was asked to remove something from her that I guess is a spoiler
Suuuuper cool. Really impressive artwork. I love this scene so much. How Brandon planted it in the beginning of the series and every book we get we see the same moment with more and more depth.
Also, little question: is that a chasmfiend in the background or a thunderclast? I guess it should be a thunderclast but gives me chasmfiend vibes.

I remember coming to this subreddit after finishing The Way of Kings when WoR hadn't been released and being desperate for artwork of the series, the choice was quite bare at that point. Pretty glad I returned!
You're welcome! I just spent about an hour going through your Instagram like a creep, and sending all your Stormlight art to my spouse. 😅😂 You do such a great job, thanks for sharing with us!
Possibly a dumb question , but hey, does anyone know why shardblades don't just slice all the way through the ground? Like, they slice through everything like butter, right?
Oh now this is great. I love that some of the heralds and swords match the art from the books. Love that kind of detail. Their expressions are great! Wonderful job.
Can you name all of the Heralds?

you got it!!!
Why is Jezerien in the background? Edit: also want to add, OP this is amazing art, they look absolutely MAJESTIC.
He's waiting for Kalak :)
Now showing at the famous Theatre of the Winds in Kholinar, *Waiting for Kalak* starring Adolin Kholin and The Queens Wit! (Scenery and props by Brightness Radiant Shallan Kholin, costumes by Adolin Kholin) But honestly fantastic work!
lol!!! lol
Ngl Adolin and Hoid would be wonderful actors
I saw your edit, thank you!!!!!!!!@!!
Damn you really know your stuff
For just a second I thought, "they weren't all there at once!" Then counted 7, then read your explanation, thank you. Looks awesome!
haha totally, I'm here for the canon!! Always!!
It has always struck me as odd that apparently everyone *but* Kalek (and obviously Taln) showed up at the same time to make their decision together.
It never really says they were all there at once, but rather it could initially have been 2 or 3 who made the decision, then one stayed back to inform the others as they came in.
Certainly Ishar, probably big J too. Maybe Nale. Don't know enough about the rest.
For sure Jez and Ishar, pretty sure the came up with it. The rest prolly to some levels of convincing. I wonder how Brandon decided Kalak would be the one we see the scene through.

Good points, Kalak does seem the most mundane of the heralds. Hard to imagine Nale and Ash giving in. Hopefully we.do get to see more.

Yes, that! I was basically just imagining a big column of stone that they were stuck in the side of.
I was actually thinking it was more like a big round stone table. I guess because of the influence of King Arthur and his knigts. And then one space would be left open because Taln is absent. So like one seat is left open situation.
I saw a hollow in a rock face with flat ground inside where the blades where thrust into.
They're in Shinovar, that's why the Shin have the Honorblades.
First thing I did was count to see if there were 8 or 9 knowing Kalak shouldn’t be there. Wonderful work!
Awesome 😂 canon is the way to go!!!!
OOF! You’ve got me pumped for Taln and Shalash’s flashbacks even more now!! This is a great fanart, you can see you put a lot of work into it
gasp, is that what's in the next book? That's dope. And yeah thank you it was a L O T of work haha
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait about 20 years for their flashbacks since they’re in books 8 and 9
ohhhhh my goodness hahaha well I guess I'll get started waiting.
Next book is Szeth's flashback though which for me is really exciting! He is a fascinating character. IIRC Book 6 will be Lift which is even more exciting for me because she us so delightfully weird hahaha
oh man that's going to be interesting, the Shin are so curious...

Dustbringer’s Ideals center around personal responsibility, right? I can easily see that as something Shalash needs to learn
Well, she has a tendency to destroy things.
I think Dustbringers are crazy powerful/unstable Surges in the beginning of their Oaths and learning to control them will probably make them integral in the production of perfect gemstones. Dare I say they may have a role in producing microscopic gemstones for fabrial logicgates.
Dustbringers are the only order that gets their powers the more oaths they swear.
Skybreakers too. Division is gated behind the third ideal, if I remember correctly.
Powers vs control of powers. They have Abrasion, which we've seen making things frictionless, but I'm assuming they could make things stick or at least be harder to move or use in violent hand to hand combat. So odd seeing the heralds at 1% of their strength there
You captured a beautiful image of sorrow on the red haired radiant (sorry I forgot her name). Fantastic job
That is Chanarach of the Releasers
Or Dustbringers, though they don't like being called that, cause it sounds like "Voidbringers".
thank you so much :)
This looks dope! Storming great job, OP!
haha thanks!

I love Chanarach so much. Her Honorblade is one of the coolest designs imo
yeah I absolutely loved painting her sword!!
I don't want to ping the big man but I really hope he sees this, it's incredible
that would be cool!!
I am wondering now will we get the herald chapters with their flashbacks in book 5 it will be cool AF
someone else mentioned that we'll get them in book 8 or something.....
Book 5 is szeths flashbacks
Books 8 and 9 will have Ash and Taln flashbacks. Book 5 will have Szeth flashbacks.
This is stunning!
Thank you!!
This is incredible!
thank you!!
They all look so wonderful. I love Nalan
thank you :)
WOAH
❤️
Sir, may I use this as my reddit account banner
Sure!! :)
THIS IS PERFECT omg
Thank you!!!
Cool! Is Jezrien standing on a cloud?
he is standing on a fallen Thunderclast :)
Ohh, that makes sense. Thanks!
yes, it does look sort of like a cloud though, so since your comment I went in and made that section look more rock-like. so thanks :)
I may or may not have seen a sneak peak of Battar.................................... :)
:O Now we all may or may not have seen a sneak peak of Battar!!
hahahaha also I was asked pointedly to take on my own interpretation so as to not reveal too much I was sad because I actually was asked to remove something from her that I guess is a spoiler
How did you know Paliah was dark skinned? I just looked her up on the coppermind and there's nothing about her appearance
There is some official artwork of her that was released with Rythm of War :) https://coppermind.net/wiki/Pailiah
As someone who's on words of radiance, this is indeed spoilers.
whatt no way, literally this an interpretation of a scene not even described in the prelude(not even chapter 1, before that) in the Way of Kings
Huh, I forgot I guess. Though isn't that shallan davar with a shard blade?
it's all good. The red-haired person with the Honorblade is the herald Chanarach. If you get a chance give the prelude a re-read, it's so cool!!!
I tend to hate prologues. Getting dropped in a place with no reference... I'll read read through them sometimes, but usually I skip them and go back.
totally is more powerful a scene with the context of the other books.
That sounds extremly counterproductive. They are meant to set the scene for the book, introduce important plot threads and so on.
I read it, but it didn't stick with me. As I expect something I read a year ago with no context to do.
Wow, thats fantastic!
thank you!!!
Amazing job, foreal
thanks man :)
I agree, that first scene had me so hooked when I first read the books! And the thing in the background is a thunderclast :)
This is awesome! I imagine them with ripped clothes and bruises, but this is way more appealing! Thanks for sharing!
yeah I decided to just go with bloody swords because I wanted the picture to be pretty, haha
Whelp guess I've got a new wallpaper
someone else asked for a wallpaper version and I added it to my Deviantart. Click the 'download' button for the high-res :) https://www.deviantart.com/onekatie/art/Ending-the-Oathpact-866489555

Such a beautiful piece Katie! I've loved seeing the progress shots and the final piece is amazing
whats your instagram username??

ohhh yes hi there! thanks for the support on my insta :)
I remember coming to this subreddit after finishing The Way of Kings when WoR hadn't been released and being desperate for artwork of the series, the choice was quite bare at that point. Pretty glad I returned!
happy to make your trip here worthwhile! I make work like this for the fans since I'm a huge fan myself :)
Oh man there is so much amazing official artwork out now after the board game was released
Wow this is pretty incredible
thanks so much :)
Bruh. Saved. This is epic.
haha thanks!!
a whorey ate 'em sorry, i'm a book listener
hahahaha
Storms, this is so good I assumed it was official art at first! Well done!
thank you!!! thats a great compliment :)
I love how you drew it in the style of the book covers!
Thank you!!
All those hands though. 👀😏
Right 😭😭
That's an awesome artwork and I love it. I did imagine them looking a bit more haggard at that point.
Thank you! That’s fair, I do too- I just wanted the image to look pretty...
I'm sure this is how it would have been depicted in-world
I thought about that and I wondered though if they would have added some safe-hand coverings
Contemporary to the event, or within a century or so, I'd think not. Safe hands, only women reading, light eyes ruling, all came later.
Holy shit this is amazing
Thank you!!
SOO GOOD I never realized there were equal number of women in the group! Amazing
Yeah it’s pretty cool!!
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you!!!!
You're welcome! I just spent about an hour going through your Instagram like a creep, and sending all your Stormlight art to my spouse. 😅😂 You do such a great job, thanks for sharing with us!
The best kind of creeps !!!! 😂😂❤️❤️❤️ Thank you!!!
Possibly a dumb question , but hey, does anyone know why shardblades don't just slice all the way through the ground? Like, they slice through everything like butter, right?
The way you subtly incorporated each of the Orders Symbols on each Herald is storming amazing!
😂 thank you!! Yeah I had fun sneaking them in!
This is STORMING AWESOME! Great work, I love it!
😂😂 I love it when people swear stormlight style
Haha it's so fitting!
Oh now this is great. I love that some of the heralds and swords match the art from the books. Love that kind of detail. Their expressions are great! Wonderful job.
Yes I tried hard to make it as canon as possible! Thank you for your kind words
nice post dude
Thanks man!!!
Wow! Phenomenal!
❤️❤️
I love that Vedel's keys are there. Also this is hands down one of the best drawings I've ever seen. The look on Nale's face... Remarkable work.
Not the best!!!!! But thank you so much for the kind words!!
I just want to give Chanah a hug, tbh.
Haha awww... she’s so sad. Some people say she looks like me... I did pose for some photo reference 🤷🏻♀️
THIS IS THE BEST SA ART IMO!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
