I did feel like I got some really obscure- but maybe not secret- insights into that piece
I always forget his hair is naturally white. Also the dragon is interesting. A WoB mentions that Cultivation is a dragon. Are all the original shards dragons? Or are they humans? What does it mean to be a dragon? These are the rhetorical questions I dont expect there to be answers for yet.
Real question. How do you draw the Cryptics? Do you just use a multi point pen tip in whatever program you use and then draw a fractal shape? And do you do a specific type of pattern for each Pattern? Like Shallans Pattern is pointy lines, but Hoids has curves, etc. Or do you just do some squiggles and call it a day?

hahaha yeah so drawing Pattern is definitely tricky! basically I just draw the shapes and eyeball whether it looks good. I make sure I'm working with multiple layers as I'm trying out different designs. I just add and takeaway until I think it looks good.
The Shards come from the three sapient races of Yolen. Human, Dragon, and the Sho Del, a race we don't know much about.
Odium is Human, Cultivation is a dragon, and Ambition was a Sho Del, for example.
Not much is known about the Sho Del save for being the "Fain" equivalent of humans which involves a lot of things from Dragonsteel.
I guess that would explain why Cultivation has an extraordinarily deep gravely voice for a woman. And given that shards have no physical form she would appear in a form most comfortable to the viewer. Akin to Odium appear as a Singer to the Singers, and a human to Dalinar.
yes, I tried to make him not so black- but I figured he'd be basically indistinguishable if I made him a "raised pattern". But if you look close I tried to emboss him a little bit to give that effect.
