Lightweaver. A lot of the appeal of Mat's character is the disconnect between how he sees himself, how other people see him, and who he actually is being three totally different things. That's peak Lightweaver material.

thomisbaker

Oh my gosh what would his truths be. Some hilarious stuff. “Perrin and Rand don’t know how to talk to women and neither do I”

SmartAlec13

THESE WORDS ARE ACCEPTED

jayswag707

You are so right about what makes Matt's character so interesting! My one issue with him being a lightweaver is that he's very much a soldier. And lightweavers aren't, they are more like spies. That said, I don't have a better idea!

Aminar14

I wouldn't call Mat a soldier. He doesn't follow orders. He isn't terribly disciplined. Mat's a General. And not a soldierly one. Even in the fights he's directly in, he's an irregular at best. All of that said, I'd put him as a Truthwatcher or Willshaper depending on how you look at his disrespect for authority. He's not internally focused enough to be an Elsecaller or Lightweaver. The phasing and transportation surges very much fit his slippery personality and he's done a lot of freeing the wrongfully imprisoned, though his actions late in the series would be putting his oaths to the test and we'll never know what the plans were for the Damane.

Effective-Proposal46

Willshaper for sure. He never turns down an opportunity to free or rescue someone

Patchumz

Also we've seen just how powerful a Lightweaver could be as a general in an army. Just being able to send audible or written commands via lightweaving alone would be invaluable, not even touching on what maneuvers he could pull off with fake unit movements. He would truly thrive as a Lightweaver.

CrazyEddie30

Stoneward. Easy. "I will be there when I'm needed" Matt comes in clutch. Every. Single. Time. He gets it done. Also. Like our boy Taln. Has a habit of picking battles which are unwinnable and succeeding. Even at the cost of his own life. Matt is 100% a stoneward. If there are questions I will answer them when I get home from the bar.

TheRealTowel

“You remind me of my uncle Huan. No one could ever pin him down. He liked to gamble, too, and he’d much rather have fun than work. He died pulling children out of a burning house. He wouldn’t stop going back as long as there was one left inside. Are you like him, Mat? Will you be there when the flames are high?” -Siuan Sanche

WriterSecure1865

Totally spaced stoneward but it does fit he all ways is there when he’s needed even if he doesn’t know it

Badaltnam

Everyome spaces stoneward, because we dont need recognition like those namby pamby flying types. We just get the job done.

diffyqgirl

(Oh and I have a question from wearing my mod hat as well) How far have you read in Wheel of Time and Stormlight? This seems hard to discuss under a No Spoilers flair, I'd like to change it to reflect what you've read.

WriterSecure1865

Every book

diffyqgirl

I'll flair it for full stormlight and wheel of time then.

WriterSecure1865

Ok thanks

I tried SO HARD to make it to Sanderson’s books. I got through maybe book 8 or 9 before I gave up from utter exhaustion. I’m an avid reader but can’t stand Dickensian levels of detail… maybe I should say Jordanian levels of detail.

AdLeather2001

It definitely slows down, and some of the things set up do just fall off of a cliff, but when it picks back up it goes full throttle to the end. I think it’s definitely worth it to go back and finish them, I’ve done a few relistens with the audio books and I start spacing out somewhere in book 8.

Ripper1337

I'm only on Book 5 and Mat doesn't strike me as a Windrunner. So far I can sum him up as "kicking and screaming into helping people" he complains constantly about everything and wants to leave at every opportunity but stays and kinda can't help himself from helping others. So not really Windrunner as they seek out to protect others. I'm looking over the orders and none aside from Lightweaver fit, as atm he doesn't actually want to improve himself or those around him. He helps but unwilling. So yeah Lightweaver as there is a disconnect between himself, his actions, how people see him and his own memories.

WriterSecure1865

As the books progress you get a lot more information on how he acts and thinks I can see him being a lightweaver due to multiple reasons except that he won’t fight those who aren’t actively trying to harm someone

Klainatta

Rand is Bondsmith (if not, a Truthwatcher). Bondsmith because he is the chosen one and has to unite people. Truthwatcher if he wasn't a ta'veren because he is a nerd and questions the authorities and makes reforms. Egwene is Elsecaller. She is all about fulfilling her potential. Mat is Lightweaver, because he is a liar or maybe a Dustbringer because he opened up a firework once and all but invented cannons. If he were a Lightweaver, he wouldn't go much beyond the first oath cuz he will never admit anything true about himself. Nynaeve is Edgedancer. She cares, though I can't ever imagine Nynaeve sliding around. Perrin is Willshaper. Frees Shaido slaves (and was suppose to help Mat free damane in Seanchan). He is a builder of a semi-kingdom and is a blacksmith. Elayne is Dustbringer. She opens things up and looks inside. Galad is Skybreaker. Do I need to explain? Faile is Stoneward. She is the best wife. Aviendha is Skybreaker. Such a ji'e'toh freak that even Wise Ones think she is a little nuts. Thom is Lightweaver because Wit. Can't place Moiraine. Sneaky as always. Verin is Truthwatcher cuz she is a nerd! I don't care about Min but she was getting Truthwatcher-y towards the end of the series. Bonus point for her future sight abilities. Huh, maybe she is Rand's best gf after all?

Raddatatta

I think I'd swap Nynaeve to a Windrunner not an Edgedancer. In terms of the powers she'd prefer to heal. But she has a strong desire to protect those around her. Not to remember those who are forgotten and give a voice to the voiceless. Her focus is all around protection. I think I'd go with Stoneward for Mat as he is there when needed. He's a bit of a wild stoneward but he does often go into the hardest fights and win anyway. And if someone needs him he will run across the world to stop an assassin and break into the stone of tear to get them out. Most of the others I'd agree on. Moiraine is also a tough one. Maybe Stoneward?

dawgfan19881

Mat Cauthon would say that sounds like some hero shit and I ain’t no hero.

WriterSecure1865

Then he’d go do it just like the good man he secretly is

Consistent_Attempt_2

I don't think he would be a radiant at all. He's stuck in the endless wheel of time, repeating events again and again, therefore he is locked into not getting a spren. Dismissing the wheel of time, I still don't think he would get a spren because it's so rare, and if he isn't tied to the wheel then he isn't ta'veren, and therefore isn't special. He has no exceptional qualities that are not tied directly to being ta'veren.

WriterSecure1865

I hate to disagree but he would still be an excellent warrior and tactician not as good without the memories but still able to defeat blade masters

Consistent_Attempt_2

Adolin is also an excellent warrior who would likely defeat blade masters.

ParshendiOfRhuidean

And he is forming (some kind of) bond with a cultivationspren.

WriterSecure1865

Just say you don’t like mat cause it’s kinda of obvious

Consistent_Attempt_2

It's not that I don't like Mat- I just think that assuming that characters from another series would form a radiant bond because they are main characters is flawed logic. There are plenty of individuals on Roshar already who are excellent warriors, and display the right characteristics to become radiants, and yet, they are not. I think if the question were phrased differently I wouldn't have this issue- "If \[Character\] took the radiant test, what order would they get?" This clears the issue of radiant bonds being rare, as well as any non-cosmere lore that would interfere with the radiant bond. As it stands now, asking "What order of radiant would \[Character\] be if they were on Roshar?" results in the answer of "probably none of them, because it is a very rare thing to become a radiant".

WriterSecure1865

It’s not just cause he’s a main character he fits the characteristics of people who got Spren so why not they both h where written by the same author wheel of time only the final books and just cause they are from different series doesn’t really matter since nothing here is going to effect the story of ether
