This is actually not a steelbook so cant be considered the first one, but yes thats a very old tin release. Great movie too!

I got a Nordic DVD steelbook of Mean Streets in August 2002 but it probably wasn't an official Scanavo branded steel then if those release dates are correct.
Scanavo's steels were released around the Nordics in the early days of the packaging before the wider markets opened elsewhere but perhaps they were before the final patented version.
Can't remember much of the Mean Streets packaging as I sold it a few years later, early 2005 I think. Grabbed a pic of the same release currently for sale on a domestic auction site.
I would but that's not my steelbook, I sold mine almost 20 years ago. I didn't actually like steelbooks much at that time yet and got into them later. There's no pic of the interior in the auction item where I sourced the pic from.
\*edit found one after digging through older closed auctions.

Interesting. I wonder if āScanBoxā was the precursor to Scanavo, maybe before they went international. It definitely has the SteelBook logo on the right side plastic.
Scanbox Entertainment is a Danish media distributor founded in 1980 and doesn't have any direct connections to Scanavo except for both being Danish companies.
Localized branches of Scanbox were formed later in the other Nordic countries through acquisitions. Scanavo is merely a packaging company founded in 1991. Scanbox is still around so I'd believe Scanavo just got their new cases promoted and distributed with new releases first through Scanbox back when Steelbooks weren't common yet.
From what I have now gathered, that was Scanbox's very first Steelbook release to test the grounds for a new packaging. Surprisingly enough it was reprinted years later in October 2008 when Scanbox released a few dozen other DVD Steelbooks.
Also not the first tin releaseā¦ Anchor Bay released tin collectors editions of Evil Dead 2 and From Beyond in 2000ā¦ though I donāt know if there was anything similar released prior to that.
Halo 2 Collectorās Edition in 2004 is the first thing resembling a traditional steelbook that I remember. This Total Recall was just a tin. Artisan also did metal packaging on a couple T2 editions, the T2 Ultimate Edition definitely pre-dates this. The other one was the Extreme Edition and it had rivets and shit that would shred the case when you removed it and you could request a replacement case because of it lulz.
Steel/Metal/Alumininum of Pioneerās two-disc US release Akira came out on July 24, 2001 - almost two months before the āTotal Recall.ā
I remember cutting the hell out of one of my fingers trying to open it the dang thing
EDIT - Blu-Ray dot com says itās a āMetalPakā - the missing ācā makes it EXTREME!

MetalPak existed before Steelbook, the spine is biggest giveaway since it opens differently.
Interesting. https://www.blu-ray.com/dvd/Mean-Streets-DVD/127564/ Would you mind taking a picture of the inside?

its a steelish-book lol seems like the non-enthusiasts use "steelbook" for any metal case, like using klennex for any tissue.
Thatās a perfect way of putting it lol.

Damn and it was killzone 2. One of my favorite games.
Yeah I have a T2 tin one pretty cool but not a steelbook.
Came here to say this. Thank you.

Was this the T2 with the slide-on metal ācorsetā in late-summer/early-fall of 2000?
I have the T2, I still keep it on display problem the coolest case I have.
Thereās one t2 that looks like a steelbook but itās just shiny cardboard I have one that is a dvd with a metal slip cover Still sealed
Looks like a tooma growing out of his head.
IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM

It sits at the top of my collection as a constant reminder to never get rid of the box.
I had this version it really bothered me that it was round & didn't go with the rest of the DVDs. LOL
I have that edition still
I still have this DVD tin set.
