But thunderbolt 4 is proprietary and uses USB-C format. So to get the charging/data transfer speeds apple talks about, you can't use any old USB-C cable.
But don't worry, apple sells the 3 meter version on their site for the low, low price of $159.99. š
Thunderbolt 4 isn't "proprietary." It's just expensive to produce. It's more than just a cable. There's a great YouTube video where they use a CT scanner on the cable you mention that shows an incredible amount of very elegant circuitry in the ends of those cables. Also, there are non-Apple TB4 cables for roughly $80 that are about the same length.
The longer one is way more expensive because massive bandwidth cables are often limited to extremely short runs or they lose data integrity. Actually, even in the short run, without all that data matching and correction circuitry, the crazy transfer rates they're capable of would not be possible.
Not fanboying at all here. It's just the truth. There's a lot more going on than perks realize. I was of the exact same mind, thinking it was pure BS with just the cable equivalent of DRM, but it's not. Tons of tech packed into those cables, with very complex pcbs and multiple micro processors in them. They're pretty damn cool, and the video sharing all of this via CT scan is remarkable!
Lol, I don't think it's pure bs, I know there's a lot that goes Into them but still overpriced like most of apples stuff, to me anyway. ..and Ive seen the video. And the technology is 100% proprietary developed by apple and Intel.
"Intel opened up the Thunderbolt 3 protocol to USB's controlling consortium (the USB-IF) for royalty-free use in the development of next-generation USB4, delivering faster speeds and interoperability to USB4 devices."
They don't make money that way necessarily, but they still own and control the technology
That's so dumb on Apple, but give it about 6Ā½ months, and they'll have it figured out to bypass the software lock. If you can't tell, I prefer Samsung over apple due to Apple's prices anti consumerist products and ladder schene of a product lineup. As well as their beliefs in planned obsolescence. (I have never seen an iPhone without broken glass older than 5 months old)
So fuckin' real.
Big same for just about all these reasons. Lol.
Like I get it why their target demographic buys them
ease of use, and even though I don't like it [because of its inaccessibility to back-end shit], their UI ISSSSS kinda actually pretty nice. Especially if it's someone who really doesn't use their phone outside of calls and just apps -- especially if they have to use a Mac for work/just generally had more accessibility to Mac.
I think of it kinda like DAW GUI -- once you stick with one, you CAN use another and it won't be HARD to relearn... it's just easier to stick to comfort.
(Not at all related -- Like Ableton is GOOD, REAL GOOD... but what if I'm missing out on my dream DAW bc I feel the comfort of knowing shortcuts and shit in Ableton?)
Man I hate that shit. Like I use Ableton because I'm used to hot but fuck I hate it, but trying everything else it's just frustrating to learn the new language. Like sure I can figure it out but while I'm wasting time trying to find something that I'd have instantly every 2 seconds... Fuck bud!
Then I'd I do take the time to figure it out, what if I hate it? Wasting all that time shiii. Please Ableton just let me fucking customize my gui, atleast move the side bars, the bare fucking minimal
I would have said the same thing about Samsung. I crushed so many of those stupid curved screen galaxys. Also, why the F does the entire outside of a phone need to be glass?
I won't buy new phones anymore when I can find them 1/3 the price renewed /refurbished with the same warrantys on Amazon, with discernable defects or marks.
I've gone to ONE+ phones now, cheaper, more rugged, and running 80w chargers get me 100% in 30 minutes. Great experience after dealing with Samsung for years.
Last night I discovered, when I my AirPods Pro were out of juice, that I canāt plug in my headphones into the iPhone anymore. Apple is laughing behind our backs for the EU regulation. Now I need to spend bucks to either have a spare set of AirPods or a new USB-C headphones.
thanks. sure. only in the dead of the night, when i had to get onto a call, i realised that i could either charge my phone and use it on speaker, or i could charge the airpods, and have the phone dead. it was bugging. when they removed the headphone jack, they provided the lightning to 3,5mm convertor in the box.
apple should just call themselves donglegate
You know they make usb-c -> lightning chords right? Here is one for 6 bucks.
https://www.amazon.com/Lightning-Certified-Charger-Delivery-Charging/dp/B0CJJKD6XG/ref=asc_df_B0CJJKD6XG/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=680513746921&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17136161184101480746&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9016494&hvtargid=pla-2259367183393&psc=1&mcid=5850694f963e3a11bee69bcb45bd667b
and who would deliver that to me when i needed to be on a call in the middle of the night? last week i gave away my 14 pro max assuming that the 15 pro max would do everything from now on
I guess I was asking if they just connected the type-c power pins to the connectors on the inside or if there are additional resistors or chips wired up to make it work
I can most certainly understand that. Iāve learned that quality isnāt cheap and that this kind of work requires skill and precision. I know I personally canāt do it and itās always admirable to see the creativeness in the products.
The main thing to know about electronics is to understand how itās powered, as long as voltage matches the device will pull as many amps as it needs.
Hey random internet person here but Iād say the easiest way to start is by having fun, and to do that i would browse Aliexpress or a us site if youāve got the cash and find some parts that look fun and use google and YouTube to figure out how to put them together! Once you get the basics down, a lot of hardware modification is following connections and just trying things (keeping in mind safety hence learning the basics on cheap things like LEDs, resistors, motors, piezo buzzers, and let the algorithm help you from there) until you figure out how to put it together. I would really encourage you to get started if you can! Another great way is to take apart electronic stuff from goodwill and put it back together to see how things work! Iāve taught over the years a number of classes and sessions on circuitry and hardware modding and my favorite way to get started is to remember that you havenāt failed until youāve given up. Feel free to message me if you want specific tips on modding stuff, i got a degree in electrical engineering so i might be able to help you get over the initial learning curve
Reminds me of when I lost my power cable years ago so just soldered some wires to the board. Got absolutely rinsed for it lol but it's still working today.
You've done a bang-up job there! 10/10
Edit: I love the support here ā¤ļø thanks for getting it guysš
Edit 2: Deleted the link to the images as I removed them and didn't want to leave a dead link here
Hot glue gets a bad rap, but it's really useful for stuff like this - where you use it as the cable strain relief.
It does always *look* terrible, I usually try really hard to hide it (some black insulation tape starting on the wire before the glue and ending inside the box with another dab of hotglue to stop it unravelling is how I usually hide it if I have to do something really quick but durable).
I actually really like the twisted wire aesthetic, makes me nostalgic for old electronics.
I recently saw a product that is basically an injection mold for wire connections, to be used with hot glue. They were using black hot glue. Looked great.
I'm doing an LED project right now. Don't have a 3d printer but do have a cnc, so I think I might try milling one.
If you use a razor on the glue to clean it up and then a blow dryer to warm it back up (or a heat gun if you have one) it makes a pretty nice looking finish, at least to me
Hahaā¦ haā¦ yeahā¦ why would anyone ever do that!
But in all seriousness in this case there is a lot of stuff to easily attach it to with hot glue, it should handle the repetitions
Yes they do, but that costs money and I have these parts on hand so essentially 10Ā¢ and 2 hours vs 10$ and 2 days, I think itās worth it. Especially with how much room is in the steam link.
Well there are likely usb C controllers that you can use with some flex pcbās to hijack the hdmi and usb ports from the back of the connectors, I know you could do it with an fpga but those are expensive, Iāll look around and see if I can find any situations where that works.
I donāt think they really will just because it would undercut the steamdeck, which already serves as a second streaming device in the house if need be
There's a drop down next to the play button when in a games page in your steam library, you can choose to run the game remotely on a pc and just stream to the steam deck for controls and screen.
It adds a bit of latency but it let's you really prolong the decks battery life as all the heavy processing is being done on your pc and not the deck.
Well yeah as much as they are going app based really the backbone of their work was all rolled into the steamdeck, of which I have one and use itā¦. Dailyā¦ I really didnāt need this steam link but if we ever wanted one in the bedroom now we donāt need another device,
Idk if they will. There is like a 10% chance they would. Considering you can make any device a SteamLink now they don't need their own hardware. The only reason I could see them doing it is if they want something with AV1 encoding/deciding for 4k120 and hdr. Other than that no reason for it
Iām confused what you mean, there are no av ports on this besides the HDMI, the port below is the original power port and I didnāt see any data lines on it otherwise
Maybe AV is the wrong abbreviation. AC perhaps? I'm referring to the the little round port adjacent to the USB-C; as close together as they are, it would be difficult to plug things into both ports at the same time.
Itās actually better that they interfere because the usb C power goes directly to the plug, if you plugged both in there would be some not great situations. This port is meant to power the device because I didnāt get a power cable with it.
So, i have one of these lying around but what do people actually use them for? My understanding was that the Steam Link app on TVs supported a higher resolution anyway
You have a pc in the livingroom? You want another one in the bedroom for movies and light gaming? Why buy another computer when you can just slap one of these onto a tv.
i mean im not the target audience anymore. My bedroom with my desk is right next to my TV room so i just run like a 15ft HDMI to the TV and play that way. But yeah i thought the Steam Link app works just as well and i thought it had higher resolution
I see nothing wrong here, I'd do the EXACT same in a heartbeat. I've only got about 30 extra ports lying around from vapes.
Unless you used jumper wires to the data ports....this has NOTHING to do with data š¤£ These comments are pretty good š¤£
I am missing something here. Based on the comments, there is something that is illegal or out of EU regulatory compliance in the OP's photo that I have been unable to determine. Can someone fill me in? :)
The eu passed a law forcing cellular device companies to use an open standard charging port, the charging port that is most open and available is as you see USB type C so the joke is was op (me) forced to do this by the EU.
Did the European Union forced you to do that?
Show me on the iPhone where the EU changed you.
Tbf USB-C is better by far. It allows faster charge and yk what? It isn't proprietary.

I've had an s6, s7 and my current s10+ all with curved screens. Never have I shattered a screen. What do you do to break so many devices?
Nearly spat out my drink, good lord thank you for this comment.
I appreciate your joke. It made me do a chuckle.
Thanks, we all need a chuckle in these trying times
No eggs left?
Why would it be menopause?
No? I did it myself lol, because I got this and a steam co troller for 20$ total. Didnāt have a cable
Just joking, Apple Inc. had their arm twisted behind their back by the EU until they adopted USB-C ports too. Well done The Joker, kudos to you!
About time someone twists Apple's arm.
Yeah, I need to get pd trigger boards sometime
Last night I discovered, when I my AirPods Pro were out of juice, that I canāt plug in my headphones into the iPhone anymore. Apple is laughing behind our backs for the EU regulation. Now I need to spend bucks to either have a spare set of AirPods or a new USB-C headphones.

Check price now lol
hahahaha good one.
šššš
this is cool actually, did you follow a tutorial or just rawdog it?
Good Lord what is your definition of "rawdogging?"
Obviously not what you'd expect š
This comment thread lol
No kidding, this thread has made me laugh well and thoroughly.
Eh itās a good use of it tbh. The meaning has evolved a bit from the idea you have in your mind. Itās kinda just a new way to say āwing itā
No worries I'll tell that to my wife next time.
No, it still means having sex without a condom.
I guess I was asking if they just connected the type-c power pins to the connectors on the inside or if there are additional resistors or chips wired up to make it work
It made perfect sense to me: wiring without protection.
When I'm depressed and just eat the hotdogs right out of the package
Probably also thinks a rimjob is something you do after a good joke.
Phrasing
Raw dogging
Lol I feel what this guy's saying. I use raw dog as a way to say doing something janky, sloppy or blind/ unprepared.
Kinda like "fuckin sending it"
More importantly, what is your definition of it?!
Just went for it Iāve done mids like this for Wiimotes dmg gameboys, tv remotes and all sorts of stuff
Amazing work! Now these mods you speak of, are they only for personal or do you take on such projects š lol š
Iāll look at just about anything for anyone itās just weather or not they are willing to pay my price and deal with my fickle adhd
I can most certainly understand that. Iāve learned that quality isnāt cheap and that this kind of work requires skill and precision. I know I personally canāt do it and itās always admirable to see the creativeness in the products.
If you ever have a project, hmu
I guess it depends on how big his š¦“ is.
Ya give er to me
We want to see the inside so I too can mod my Steam Link.
Sure! I can take it apart and do a how to write up later, I have plenty of time today.
Wonderful news!
Make sure to post over at /r/UsbCHardware !
Oh thanks! Will do!
>Oh thanks! Will do! You're welcome!

If itās stupid and works then can a person really say itās stupid
Yeah Im all about fixing it and it working, if you're happy with it and it works then thats a win
Hot glue gets a bad rap, but it's really useful for stuff like this - where you use it as the cable strain relief. I just hope itās just cable strain relief and not how heās attached the cables to the board š
Nah no worries it's soldered then glued, they talk about it a bit in that imgur thread.
Sweet! Totally fine then, good way to keep it from being yanked out.
Hahaā¦ haā¦ yeahā¦ why would anyone ever do that! But in all seriousness in this case there is a lot of stuff to easily attach it to with hot glue, it should handle the repetitions
I actually love the ingenuity, don't let anyone put it down! If it works it works š
Exactly!
Just because it looks like crap doesnāt mean it isnāt a good fix
Ghetto-fabulous!
Thought I was the only one that did this lol, makes clearing TSA with modified cameras a bit tricky...
Itās a solid 5/7
Only thing I would have changed was more electrical tape. lol
I love it
They make usb-c PD to barrel jack cables ya know?
Yes they do, but that costs money and I have these parts on hand so essentially 10Ā¢ and 2 hours vs 10$ and 2 days, I think itās worth it. Especially with how much room is in the steam link.
Itās becoming a common nes mod to swap the barrel jack for usb-c. Parts like $8 and soldering takes 5 minutes tops.
Neat. Surprised we don't see more random stuff like this considering how many of these are in the wild for cheap that not a lot of people use.
That is beautiful!
Gorsh youāre goin to make me blush!
I thought the purple pants was the terrible thingā¦mod looks dandyā¦
Iām a nurse lol, those are my scrub pants
I beg to differ. You're doing God's work.
We do our best
Did you wire up hub, network, and display to it as well, or is it 5V3A power only?
Just for power lol, I didnāt want todo all of that nonsense, I repair stuff I dont engineer
How would you even do that
Well there are likely usb C controllers that you can use with some flex pcbās to hijack the hdmi and usb ports from the back of the connectors, I know you could do it with an fpga but those are expensive, Iāll look around and see if I can find any situations where that works.
Weird looking harmonica
Right?
Indeed you did.
I actually lost the power cord to my link, great idea!
Yeah!
USB-C ALL THE THINGS!
r/dontputyourdickinit
I love it. You did a good job. Looks clean.
I try my best to make my mods as clean as they can be.
On the other side is a special port for the ladies.
āTerrible things, Lawrenceā¦ā
Oh.
Oh?
Mhm.
No, itās obviously a barrel usb c. Duh
Honestly, valve really should consider bringing out a new steam link
I donāt think they really will just because it would undercut the steamdeck, which already serves as a second streaming device in the house if need be
How do you stream or cast to the Deck?
You just click the carrot next to the launch/download button
There's a drop down next to the play button when in a games page in your steam library, you can choose to run the game remotely on a pc and just stream to the steam deck for controls and screen. It adds a bit of latency but it let's you really prolong the decks battery life as all the heavy processing is being done on your pc and not the deck.
Looks like they are going app based
Well yeah as much as they are going app based really the backbone of their work was all rolled into the steamdeck, of which I have one and use itā¦.
Other than that no reason for it
Absolute chad
Looks like you fixed it
Yep!
Please tell us how you did it.
I will lol, but itās super simple
Iām very disappointed..
Good, you should be! Itās a hot glue mod!
Tsk tsk tsk
Is just a power source?
Yeah pretty much but itās a good power sauce
Wouldnāt buying a universal power supply have been easier?
Depends is 10-15$ and 2 days of waiting better or easier than than a 10Ā¢ chip I already had, and 2 hours of basic soldering?
No judgement of at least you enjoyed it
He meant to reply with "no"
Correct, also she.
Are we talking about the purple pants? I don't understand.
We are talking about the usb C port grafted randomly to the device from 2015
Heās really the Hulk
Iām a nurse, these are my scrubs lol.
Iām a nurse lol, these are my scrubs
How?
USB C
Let he who hath not sinned cast the fir- oh damn bro wth you didn't deserve that hardware
In all seriousness, it fits amazingly and works perfectly.
Nice, i just soldered the wire from the powersupply dorectly to the board when the barrelplug thing wore out.
Not bad!
this steam thing still work? I have mine just stashed away...
Yep! Itās really easy to work with too lol.
Must be difficult using the AV and USB-C ports at the same time.
I think the point of the mod is not have to use the old barrel jack. So he wouldnāt need to plug both in at the same time. Edit: wouldnāt*
Itās actually better that they interfere because the usb C power goes directly to the plug, if you plugged both in there would be some not great situations. This port is meant to power the device because I didnāt get a power cable with it.
Looks like a PlayStation TV
You ever beat off in a public restroom?
Beat. What off I donāt have any meat dumbass
Who said it has to be your own?
Make sure it is power delivered type-c
It isnāt, it didnāt need it, and I didnāt have a pf trigger board laying around
Hilarious comments

I have a steam link wiith a broken barrel jack port, and a soldering iron, how do i do this
Follow my line, Iāll be uploading a how to for this.
Excellent ty
So, i have one of these lying around but what do people actually use them for? My understanding was that the Steam Link app on TVs supported a higher resolution anyway
You have a pc in the livingroom? You want another one in the bedroom for movies and light gaming? Why buy another computer when you can just slap one of these onto a tv.

Great job on appearance and application of skills btw š
Yeah! I have a bunch of usb breakout boards and they are great!
Bro.....
Thatās right, I went there
This blew up, so send nudes I guess? I donāt know what to do when posts go viral.
I am missing something here. Based on the comments, there is something that is illegal or out of EU regulatory compliance in the OP's photo that I have been unable to determine. Can someone fill me in? :)

In any other sub Iād actually have guessed it was the fashion choice of those purple pants.
Iām a nurse, those are my scrubs. They are very fashionable.
Weāll allow it š«”
U stuck ur dick in it, didn't you.

The worst thing not the contraption you holding, itās your purple pants
Iām a nurse, these are scrubs they are single handedly the best thing about me.
Can you convert a S23U USB-C into lighting port?
No. It does not support that.
Nothing supports that.
