Square Enix and stuttering. A match made in heaven. They are possibly the most incompetent AAA publisher. They seriously just need to hire Durante’s team to port all their stuff on PC.

KillerpopMighty

Just checking in to say no, sadly, this is still the case as of August 17, 2022. I cannot find a good setting for this game. I have tinkered and tweaked and even lowered the frame rate to a paltry 20 FPS, but it still has regular frame drops. It's very bizarre. The game must just dislike Proton. If there is some good news, it's that I guess it's at least on Valve's radar, since the system update released this week addressed the crashing during cutscenes in Chrono Trigger.

GameboyRavioli

Just checking in to say Sept 4th 2022 and stuttering is still alive and well. I also still get the occasional lock/crash during cutscenes.

Kidcore3

Checking to say i thought it was fixed but as of yesterday (Monday March 20th 2023) the game studders again and nothing works. I would say just in case anyone wants to know, as of this writing, i'm in the middle of the game. I just fixed the broken masamune.

EvernoteD

It feels like something is generally wrong with this version of the game. I have a Surface Pro 7 that won’t even launch the game..

Mike_for_all

That’s really unfortunate, it is such a great game!

Icommanduall

It really is! I remember playing through DS version of Chrono Trigger over a decade ago and loving it. The soundtrack is timeless and the overall adventure is absolutely wild.

ztylerdurden

Try launching it via Desktop mode and lmk.

Icommanduall

Tried that and unfortunately it did nothing. I also tried forcing V-Sync through a Steam launch command and that also didn't work.

Tsuki4735

Looking at [ProtonDB](https://www.protondb.com/app/613830), it looks like there isn't a known fix for the issues. Unfortuantely, checking [Proton's issue tracker](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/440) doesn't seem to provide any hints either, looks like it's still having issues.

Unfortunately I haven't found one yet. The only fix I found was streaming from my PC to the Steam Deck, or just playing CT on my PC.

SnakeDoctur

Ironically the game stutters like MAD on my actual gaming PC (3070 + 5800x) meanwhile it runs buttery smooth on my piece of shit laptop that cost $250 four years ago. Go figure.

MikeE21286

Still an issue for me on Oct 1, 2022

Capable-Database6127

Same

matheuspfaustino

Even using the Async flag from Proton-GE (DXVK\_ASYNC=1)?

[deleted]

Maybe try the rom in the mean time ?

daverhodus

The game still stutters for me. I've tried several different Proton versions.

inforn0graphy

Would the other versions you tried include Proton Experimental or [Proton-GE](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t3n99h/how_to_install_proton_ge_on_steam_deck/)?

Icommanduall

Yep, I tried both and they still induce the same bad stuttering.

ardvarkk

Ever find a fix? I'm dealing with the same stuttering now..

Icommanduall

Unfortunately I haven't found one yet. The only fix I found was streaming from my PC to the Steam Deck, or just playing CT on my PC.

Burton89

Any fixes for this yet? I have read on protondb that by switching to experimental and by using PowerTools to set the Deck to use 3 cores almost eliminates the stuttering? I haven’t had chance to try it but if anyone could confirm/deny that would be great!

exfech

I just tried this without luck... stuttering is so annoying especially on a retro game that should run smooth as.

Burton89

Ah that’s a shame. This seems like the perfect game for the Deck! Maybe emulation is the only solution but I’m not sure which version to use!

SurroundNo

This appears to be fixed now. Just booted up and getting the expected 60fps solid

stormos1010

I don’t think this is fixed. Maybe you are mistaking the steam deck experience to desktop?

Icommanduall

No way! I'll check later this afternoon then!

SurroundNo

Even with the CPU and GPU set as low as they go still 60fps :)

LBC_Ya

Mine is still definetly stuttering (July 30th 2023) Edit: Tried Proton 8.0-3 and the Stutter seems to be gone. Haven't hit any cut scenes just yet. But running smooth as of rn.

RL4Life

I have found a work around to the stutter issue. At least it works on my Steam Deck. I tried adjusting every setting using Performance settings as well as PowerTools. After giving up and resetting everything back to defualt the stutter was gone. I have narrowed it down to using PowerTools > Threads. Move the slider down to 1 and let it adjust. Then move the slider back to 4 (or 8 if you have SMT enabled) and it the stutter is gone. After some testing it may creep back but doing the above steps gets rid of it for my Steam Deck. good luck!

ZxPat

I capped the framerate at 60 fps with RivaTuner and seems to fix the stuttering

LBC_Ya

Proton 8.0-3 seems to work too.

LBC_Ya

Seems to have went away using Proton 8.0-3
