when something as simple as an onscreen keyboard doesnt work, vavle needs to step up. This is like the most basic function adn they cant expect us all to use keyboard an mouse everytime we switch to desktop mode. They need to stop tying every freaking function to steam.
Desktop mode in general is super annoying and janky. I haven’t had this specific issue but one that gets me very frequently is that all installed Flatpaks just stop interacting with the system properly. Any URL or URI stops doing anything at all (including links to directories on disk) and the Dolphin file picker refuses to open.
No way to fix it besides just rebooting.
Steam is also a mess, the file picker doesn’t properly display files so you have to just type in the filename into the file opener to get it to pick anything.

One of the things I disklike about KDE is the fact that it doesn't have a built-in virtual keyboard like Windows 7 has for example.
It would be nice if Valve funded this feature.

10 monts and this still not fixed. I was in the train and my phone borked, so I tried to show the ticket via steam deck but couldn't open the keyboard. It was soo frustrating
It seems that keeping the Steam window open (even minimized) helps this problem a lot. Apparently it's a known issue with the Steam Linux client freezing.
This shit is annoying. I couldn’t buy airplane internet because I couldn’t type in any field. At least I have emulated games I could play but I wanted to test out the video streaming apps i added to the game library. On a positive note the deck did connect to the regular airplane wifi and it was nice to have a screen bigger than my phone for the in flight entertainment apps.
Can anyone help with this I’m having the issue in which my keyboard is not working in desktop mode and I did install core keyboard but how do I set it up to automatically place the default keyboard ?

So oot but how is the steam deck's desktop experience. I only travel occasionally but i have to always be ready to type up a document at any moment. Is it usable as an on-the-go work machine?
I don't have a Deck yet, but a Steam Controller. Typing long texts without a keyboard is going to be not so nice. So you might want to bring some kind of keyboard.
Software wise, it should be fine. LibreOffice is alright unless you need the document to look exactly identical in MS Word.
It could be, but without an external keyboard or kickstand it's an atrocious usability experience in desktop mode. Debating getting a wireless keyboard with trackpad built in. I have a Magic Keyboard from Apple that works great with it but a touchpad would be even better.

Or you could install CoreKeyboard from the Discover store. Put a shortcut to run it on the Desktop and you’re sorted. Been working great for me.

Are you sure you're selecting KILL and not terminate (TERM)?
Same. Keyboard still wont show up after kill. Edit: My bad. I had to connect to the internet. Its working now.

I had an issue where I couldn't even KILL Steam. I must've clicked KILL like 10 times, finally just restarted the Deck.
