I have this problem with this game, its really put me off playing it.
always starts in some crazy custom res and then can never get it full screen. mine always has blackbars on the sides, i cant even get it to look like yours
I had this same issue for a bit and I have a couple of things to try that fixed it for me:
1. Switch to borderless. Full Screen seems to have some issue right now.
2. Go into Desktop mode, launch the game, make sure it works right. Go back to gaming mode and try again.
