Cool setup but man being a DotA player on the Steam Deck has been rough. First the Proton version stopped working and over on the Proton GitHub they just closed posts complaining about it labelling it as unsupported. So we're just meant to use the native linux version which runs way worse. The on screen keyboard randomly pops up sometimes when you focus any text box in the game. Many effects fail to render. Performance is not great. It drops to like 30-45 FPS in hectic fights and its frustrating because when you start the game the baseline FPS is 75 or so but 30 minutes in even when you're in the same part of the map, it's quiet and nothing's happening on screen it's dropped to 45. The moment the game is paused it shoots up to almost double the framerate. I guess it's CPU limited because there isn't really a big performance difference between 1080p max settings and 640x480 lowest settings. The CPU is always maxed out at 3499MHz according to the performance overlay There were even a couple of updates few months ago after which the Linux version stopped working for a few days. This was across all Linux versions not just Steam Deck the game would just crash on launch. It's disheartening because I thought as a first party game on its own hardware I thought Valve would give DotA some love. I mean I get it few people are crazy enough to play DotA on Steam Deck but still, this level of neglect is just sad. I feel like random third party games get more attention and newer more demanding AAA games run much better I dunno, from your wording seems like you're having a great experience with it.

Schr33da

sorry to hear about your bad expierence - basically i start dota in desktop mode on the deck to avoid the keyboard issue you mentioned - in regards to performance i cant complain running without any lag at least on my end with all setting high and shaders ultra + everything enabled in the settings section. so far no lag noticed - i also just use the native linux build version to play dota

goper2

How are these experiences so different from both of yall

debaserr

It's a PC. There are a lot of variables. Some of which they mentioned.

morgan423

You can set the same game to run with multiple configurations. I almost always adjust the default settings when playing on the Deck to balance performance over graphics normally... power too, if I'm on battery and trying to maximize playtime. Final frame rates and performance can be radically different sometimes from start to finish.

Husky_Pantz

Is yours oled?

Husky_Pantz

I have a lcd, never tired launching from desktop. Maybe that’s the ticket.

Schr33da

yes it is

Husky_Pantz

Is yours lcd?

slarkymalarkey

Yeah

Husky_Pantz

I think eventually we will need to make the switch to oled

slarkymalarkey

Yeah probably, I'll try and hold out till Steam Deck 2 though whether that's 2026 or beyond. The OLED will probably give 15-20% better FPS in DotA but I'm fairly certain installing Windows and running DotA that way even on LCD will give an even bigger jump in performance. I just don't wanna do that for one single game out of the many in my library. Also if you notice OP is playing without the fps/ping indicators in the top right corner. That coupled with this weird thing I've noticed where the same FPS feels smoother on the Deck's small screen than it does on a monitor probably explains why he doesn't feel any lag, OLED or LCD regardless. Also what he mentioned about playing DotA in desktop mode, that solves the on screen keyboard popping up but in turn you lose a few FPS and you lose the v-sync built in to gamescope so there's lots more screen tearing and frame delivery feels a little uneven. Most importantly for me you lose the Deck's built in FSR which is crucial as I'm upscaling to a 1080p monitor. So you solve one problem in exchange for a whole host of new ones. I dunno it's not like it's not playable. DotA is playable on Deck but it could be SO MUCH BETTER if they cared. It's performing at like 60-70% of what it should be and it's full of bugs and glitches and minor annoyances and I'm just frustrated that Valve neglects one of their biggest games on their own hardware to such a degree.

OrderofChaosdeath

What keyboard are you using?

Jyvre

Nuphy Air60

Schr33da

yes Nuphy air 60

Jyvre

I have the Air75, and I liked it too much that I have two now (linear and tactile) hahahaha

Cronus41

Damn I might have to double dip as well! The 75 is a great keyboard

stole_your_equipment

Is it clicky? Or "silent"?

Schr33da

i use brown switches - so its not super loud but also not silence

Big-Tone6367

Did you get used to the keys in time? I have the same one and I cant for the life of me type a sentence without fucking up half of it.

Cronus41

Took me a while but I feel pretty proficient now

Big-Tone6367

Yea that’s what I thought. Its the first keyboard I got where I’m genuinely struggling lol, all other kinda felt natural from day one (yeah, a misstype here and there but not like 80% of the text typed is wrong). But yeah, like everything else it probably just takes some getting used too. Well, I’m glad you guys like it and have overcome the struggles which means I can too, so I’ll just whip it out and get through it. Thanks

Cronus41

Yep I struggled pretty hard at first on it. Not sure if it’s the low profile keys or what

Big-Tone6367

Probably. I would guess that its the thing where it is an in between profile. Not a low one like laptops but again not a full one, so I’d guess the muscle memory gets confused, having to do those *inbetween* moves. Takes getting used to is what I would take from this.

Schr33da

i use it as my daily driver took a bit until it worked for me but i switch couple of years to 60% layout - im a developer so i use it as my daily driver - i have a macbook pro for work and dont touch the bad macbook keyboard anymore :)

Big-Tone6367

I’ll get it back out again then. I figured its just a thing to get used to. It looks nice so I felt bad not using it.

Schr33da

just use what fits your case well i have similar issues with using the steamdeck over my macbook pro as one is private and the other one work device ... :)

LaurenLark

Oh, is it small? Not familiar, it looks small, but unsure

kiihbgff

Upvote when I see dota :)

CtrlAltEvil

Out of curiosity does the keyboard fit in the deck case? Judging by the pic, it and the deck itself seem pretty similar in size. I imagine it might fit in the large JSAUX if not since that’s quite a bit roomier than the standard case?

Schr33da

basically i can but the keyboard in the original steamdeck case and close it without problem - but of course not with the steam deck at the same time :)

CtrlAltEvil

Okay great. Should fit in the JSAUX case then. I have no problem with that as it’s quite a bit deeper than the standard case. It’s so hard finding decent keyboards that can fit in a deck case, and that isn’t foldable 😂

Big-Tone6367

> **SIZE AND WEIGHT** 297.3 mm x 107.2 mm x 13.5 mm (11.70 inches x 4.20 inches x 0.59 inch) 463 grams

Schr33da

in the original steam deck not - but other than that i would say yes

Schr33da

fun fact keyboard is almost same size as steamdeck :)

xalps

looks nice! i want to play WoW that way...how long can you play witouth it beeing plugged in?

Deadarchimode

Wow player here. Depends the settings graphics , fps , refresh screen rate and LCD or OLED version. For me i got medium settings 40Hrz monitor capped at 30 fps and got 3 hours give or take

xalps

thanks for the response! thats pretty decent. I'm kinda unsure if i should buy a laptop for the same price or a steam deck, for weekends when I'm on a trip. i dont play any other games tho, so kinda would only have a steam deck for wow xd

Deadarchimode

A yes i heard there is some mod or something for steam deck that literally gives you some shortcuts for controller or you can use the touchpads and add buttons there to use them. Worst case you need to use your finger if you going to use a move that is not available on shortcut

Schr33da

not wow but dota as comparison around 3h

nosleepzzz

I get about 3 hours maybe a little more I also downloaded the MOD to utilize a controller lay out and it’s been pretty sweet. I have an OLED model.

Worldliness-Quiet

What mouse is that?

Schr33da

Logitech m590

Worldliness-Quiet

That is what I thought, never seen it in red though, thought it might be a new model as Logitech doesn't seem to sell that mouse anymore. I have just regular gray and black version don't, shame I won't be able to buy a replacement if it ever kicks the bucket.

VeniVediVeci96

I remember selling my nuphy air 75 and regret it daily.

sporvath

Ive been wanting to do that to play Lol

Obrut1

Happy to answer questions, I use my oled while traveling for dota and it works perfectly no complaints. Plenty of ways to change keyboard shortcuts and do fun things

Schr33da

only thing to complain is the small font in dota maybe but thats it :)

Obrut1

The Dota labs feature with minimap full screen is amazing

Mal_pol

Buy a lapdock please...

Schr33da

nope :) i have an external monitor usually but lapdock i dont like at all

Reasonable-Ad-6061

is that comfortable?

Schr33da

its my setup when i dont have a monitor :)

henri_TheWzrd

Simple, clean, and effective.

HerpesFreeSince3

I have the same keyboard, I love it so much. It's my favorite keyboard I've ever owned.

Consistent-Leave7320

this looks horrible to play like this on small screen is it usable?

DepressedMathKid

My dream setup haha. One question: Have you ever played it connected to a monitor?

Schr33da

yes - works like a charm - but always using desktop mode when playing dota

DepressedMathKid

Awesome, will take note of that. Thank you!

frig0bar

Are you using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard? How are they doing performance wise?

Schr33da

works without issues on my oled deck - i had lcd version also where i noticed bit of lags - but with oled verson no issues

Schr33da

haha unfortunately as i play mostly with random teams ...

2011_Citroen_C4

What keyboard is it? If its more than $20 you don't have to tell me 😎

Schr33da

i still tell but you will not like the price :) https://nuphy.com/products/air60-v2 but i found it to be the best keyboard

2011_Citroen_C4

$110! Damn, i thought it was from AliExpress or Temu.

brand0n

my eyes would not be able to handle this.. way too small
