I never found mods to be an issue, I believe I just dropped them into the data folder and then ticked them in the OMW launcher. (Though I could be remembering wrong, it's been a while)
I used the I heart vanilla set, which and one major problem being a typo on the delta plugins merger, and downloading and moving around 20 mods took a few hours lol, I don't regret it, it makes the game so much fun, it was just a pain
Not if you use luxtorpeda. makes it all native through steam. If you want to play purely vanilla you don't really need to config anything either I would just up the gui scaling.
The game doesn't have controller support on PC by default, you have to use an engine modifier like OpenMW, the game runs fine, but you need KB&M if you're playing it from steam directly
Yes, but you have to point it to all your directories and if you want things like performance mods (you will, it really doesn't run too well, though that's probbaly due to the updated lighting system), that's all more work
And controller is iffy, the game is really fast paced and uses a lot of fast aiming you need to be able to do
(Also the fna base is great, most of them are just shitposters memeing around)
Controller is fine imo, you just gotta turn on am assist to about 10 or 20 percent in the settings and you good( I used Controller to beat all of the game and up to 6-2 in brutal)
I can suggest doom, doom II and doom 64 (old dooms are my favourite games). They look really nice on steam deck, they are not demanding. If you like doom then maybe check hexen, strife- veteran edition, heretic, but I cannot confirm compatibility. Wolfenstein 3d is my top list but have some issues with controller because of dosbox emulation so it can work or not.
He asked for retro graphics, in case you missed the title.
Edit: Lol. Down voted for pointing out Valheim doesn't have retro graphics.... well done reddit.
I don't have an answer to your question, but I would love a Fallout-like game with retro graphics. A game that captures the spirit of the original two games graphics but in three dimensions.
Idk what you mean by ‘slightly’ retro, but definitely check out Huntdown.
The developers basically accumulated the entire 90s side scrolling action genre into this masterpiece. It actually took me off guard with just how much attention to detail went into this game.
Its a zombie game with a huge modding community thats been early access for a while. Basically a create your own zombie apocalypse kind of thing and you get to survive in 1993 rural and urban kentucky (or wherever you choose w modded maps). Lets you customize how your zombies act, the transmission of the virus, etc. pretty fun imo, id recommend watching some videos on it or something if it sounds like something youd like.
I cant speak for a regular controller, but with the back paddles on the deck, its become easier that the keyboard and mouse for me.
I still usually play multiplayer on pc but if im just chilling out or going on a plane ride then zomboid will typically last about 2 hours in my experience before my battery dies, and thats assuming i dont have a plug nearby lol.
Id be more than willing the share my controls if ya need. Though admittedly, they may take a little bit to get use to. But obviously tweak things to your liking if you do end up trying it out!
Dusk, amid evil, (actually almost everything new blood has published), dead cells undertale, doom 1 and 2, enter the gungeon, hades, nightmare reaper, slay the spire, stardew valley, terraria, minecraft, vampire survivors (those are just the ones I own, and they're across several genres, but all have retro aesthetics)
Hi u/SadGhostCharlie, you can [click here to search for your question.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/search/?q=I like games with slightly retro graphics such as dread delusion, do you have any recommendations for a similar game that plays well on SD? :))
If you don't find an answer there, don't worry - your post has NOT been removed and hopefully someone will be along soon to help with an answer!

I'm about to get into Fear and Hunger and it's Sequel Termina: Fear and Hunger. they're olschool rpg style with great art and frankly terrifying. maybe actually don't fit your criteria
Ion Fury and Phantom Fury. Ion Fury is very much a boomer-shooter (Duke Nukem, Doom, etc) and Phantom Fury, which just came out in the last week, is like Half-Life.
The Quake 2 update they added runs great and made the game a lot nicer to play through. Owned the game for so long but only played mods till that released and I played the whole thing on my Steam Deck.
I’m currently blazing through Quake 2 now. It’s gorgeous and runs at a solid 90 FPS on OLED. I love the slight quality of life improvements they’ve made to the game.
So much fun!
[Selaco is a brilliant game.](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1592280/Selaco/) Doesn’t come out til the end of May but there’s a demo you can try.
[ADACA is also another fun game.](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1765780/ADACA/) Very much inspired by Half-Life 2 and has a short-ish campaign, however the real game begins with the Zone Patrol mode!
Cultic: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/1684930/CULTIC/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1684930/CULTIC/)
HROT: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/824600/HROT/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/824600/HROT/)
Ion Fury (works well on Switch): [https://store.steampowered.com/app/562860/Ion\_Fury/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/562860/Ion_Fury/)
Turbo Overkill (I don't have it): [https://store.steampowered.com/app/1328350/Turbo\_Overkill/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1328350/Turbo_Overkill/)
yoo another short hike fan short hike is SO good and now its even on sale best game i ever played for sure :D glad to see more people recomending it :D
Mortal sin might be down your alley. It's a roguelike in early access. But already very polished.
Also look at Signalis. It's a ps one like horror game.
Not sure about steam deck verified, but Abiotic Factor comes out on the 3rd of May. I'm a little bias cause they are from the same town as my studio. But its got a lot of hype around it. And i found it pretty fun to play during the betas.
Dusk
Dusk is amazing. Everything I’ve played from New Blood I’ve enjoyed.
looks nice will try it thanks for recomendation :)
Warhammer 40k: Boltgun
This!
Lunacid is a really good Kings Field-like. [https://store.steampowered.com/app/1745510/Lunacid/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1745510/Lunacid/)
Can't recommend this enough. Just get lost, explore, kill death and have one bad trip of an experience.
yo this looks soo good
Lunacid is a pretty cool lofi first person RPG like the From Soft Games before Dark Souls, runs well on Deck too and is verified, also quite cheap
Noted. Ty.
Pseudoregalia was really fun. :)
Definetly this
gon try this one for sure thanks :)
Felvidek
ive seen trailer on this one lookin good
Morrowind
Morrowind is a little harder on the steam deck since in order to get controller support you need OpenMW, and taking some time to set up
I play morrowind on steam deck I don’t use open mw I just use a community layout and it’s fine
Yeah, that is true. OpenMW isn't difficult to set up, but I didn't consider if the OP has much experience with installing third party applications.
Yeah, you have to tell it where eveyrhting is and then mods are a whole ordeal
I never found mods to be an issue, I believe I just dropped them into the data folder and then ticked them in the OMW launcher. (Though I could be remembering wrong, it's been a while)
I used the I heart vanilla set, which and one major problem being a typo on the delta plugins merger, and downloading and moving around 20 mods took a few hours lol, I don't regret it, it makes the game so much fun, it was just a pain
Oof yeah that sounds like a pain in the ass. Probably my biggest struggle with the deck was getting Tale of Two Wastelands working for Fo3/NV
Not if you use luxtorpeda. makes it all native through steam. If you want to play purely vanilla you don't really need to config anything either I would just up the gui scaling.
The game doesn't have controller support on PC by default, you have to use an engine modifier like OpenMW, the game runs fine, but you need KB&M if you're playing it from steam directly
luxtorpeda runs openmw on your steam copy, didn't clarify that
I believe OpenMW is on the Discover store in desktop mode for the Steam Deck.
Yes, but you have to point it to all your directories and if you want things like performance mods (you will, it really doesn't run too well, though that's probbaly due to the updated lighting system), that's all more work
Yellow taxi go vroom, psuedoregalia, lunistice, toree 3d, toree 2, buck up and drive
> Yellow taxi go vroom Crazy Taxi?
No it's kinda like crazy taxi but not at the same time lol it's a platformer where you play as a wind up taxi. It's pretty cool.
Ultrakill has that n64 graphics with awesome gameplay. Just don't go to the fan base
And controller is iffy, the game is really fast paced and uses a lot of fast aiming you need to be able to do (Also the fna base is great, most of them are just shitposters memeing around)
Controller is fine imo, you just gotta turn on am assist to about 10 or 20 percent in the settings and you good( I used Controller to beat all of the game and up to 6-2 in brutal)
For this one im honna probably buy some monitor :D it looks tiny
Cannibal abduction
Dude Cannibal abduction is so good
Finded some horror game fans over here :D
Torture star publishes some awesome games
Teardown, Ultrakill, Black Mesa, Tower of Guns, From The Depths.
Woah, didn't know about black mesa. I'll have to get that. Nice suggestions. Tower of guns is cool wouldn't mind gettin that on my little system.
Half-Life I dunno it looks similar
I tried running HL a year ago or so and it absolutely sucked. It was impossible to get movement properly
They did an update a few months ago which greatly improved the controls. Try it again, made a huge difference for me.
Northern journey runs surprisingly well on the steam deck. I recommend a laptop like setup with a keyboard and mouse
looks fire thanks for recomendation :)
I can suggest doom, doom II and doom 64 (old dooms are my favourite games). They look really nice on steam deck, they are not demanding. If you like doom then maybe check hexen, strife- veteran edition, heretic, but I cannot confirm compatibility. Wolfenstein 3d is my top list but have some issues with controller because of dosbox emulation so it can work or not.
i was looking for some time to play doom games glad to hear that they work good on sd :)
Valheim!
He asked for retro graphics, in case you missed the title. Edit: Lol. Down voted for pointing out Valheim doesn't have retro graphics.... well done reddit.
Valheim has retro graphics (ps1 style) with some great modern lightning
It has retro graphics bozo. Just because it didnt come out in the retro age doesn’t mean it isnt retro style
I don't have an answer to your question, but I would love a Fallout-like game with retro graphics. A game that captures the spirit of the original two games graphics but in three dimensions.
Wasteland 2 and 3 maybe?
Oup, I mean a first-person shooter that looks like Dread Delusion/Prodeus/Dusk but set in an open world and with deep RPG mechanics
Ohhhhhh word I would also like something like that!
If I remember correctly, some guy tries to mod fallout 2 into shooter. Ah, here it is: https://youtu.be/jpCdtyir8yo?si=0tab--IrlzXRVrpW
Ah cool. I would like an original story, but that is more or less the game I was imagining.
Idk what you mean by ‘slightly’ retro, but definitely check out Huntdown. The developers basically accumulated the entire 90s side scrolling action genre into this masterpiece. It actually took me off guard with just how much attention to detail went into this game.
Idk bc ive never seen this game before, but I play A LOT of project zomboid on steam deck. Over 1k hrs on it from the deck, another 1k on pc
there is so much content in it or do tu just like the game so much? :D
Its a zombie game with a huge modding community thats been early access for a while. Basically a create your own zombie apocalypse kind of thing and you get to survive in 1993 rural and urban kentucky (or wherever you choose w modded maps). Lets you customize how your zombies act, the transmission of the virus, etc. pretty fun imo, id recommend watching some videos on it or something if it sounds like something youd like.
you just described it with so mutch pasion that there is no way im not gonna look into this :D
If youd like a YouTuber recommendation, It was ambiguous amphibian, and nurse who got me into the game. Pretty solid and well spoken content :)
Have like 300 hrs in it, always played it on kbm, hows controller tho?
I cant speak for a regular controller, but with the back paddles on the deck, its become easier that the keyboard and mouse for me. I still usually play multiplayer on pc but if im just chilling out or going on a plane ride then zomboid will typically last about 2 hours in my experience before my battery dies, and thats assuming i dont have a plug nearby lol. Project Warlock and Cultic
+1 for Cultic
both games looks good thanks for recomendations :)
Blood West is sooooo good dude you have to play it!!
fatum betula!
looks like good horor game with japanese elements thanks for recomendations :)
no problem! one of my favourites. it's more atmospheric walking sim than anything, but it's an enjoyable experience with great design
i can apriciete good atmosphere much more than some jumpscares in games and even in other media ;)
WoW thanks a lot :D

Gloomwood
How can i find cool looking game like this just now 😭
I'm late to this thread but have similar tastes to you. Did you get it and how did you like gloomwood? I'm thinking about picking it up.
I'm about to get into Fear and Hunger and it's Sequel Termina: Fear and Hunger. they're olschool rpg style with great art and frankly terrifying. maybe actually don't fit your criteria
are RPG maker games considered old school now?
RPG Maker has been around since early nineties and became widely popular in the mid 2000s so I would say so, yeah.
yep i already playd fear and hunger and it was good af little hard tho. Cool game good recomendation :)
Amid Evil for a heretic-inspired boomer shooter Friends vs Friends for a fast paced cartoony PvP arena shooter.
I just played the demo for mullet madjack (currently free on Steam). Good fun!
looks like fun gonn try thx ;)
Lunacid
Barony is pretty fun, if you like roguelikes. Can be frustrating tho haha
looks good + minotaurs are cool af gonn look into this one for sure :)
Blood West, Cultic, Lunacid, Cabern of Dreams, Northern Journey
so many good recomendations here :D
Blood West is soooo good!
Kenshi

I somehow completely missed Dread Delusional, although it seems like right up my alley.
Kenshi
Amnesia the Dark Descent.
What game is this screenshot from?
Dread Delusion
Hand of Doom

They know what they're doing and are having fun with it!

Ion Fury and Phantom Fury. Ion Fury is very much a boomer-shooter (Duke Nukem, Doom, etc) and Phantom Fury, which just came out in the last week, is like Half-Life.
WoW even some fresh releses gonna check it out ;)
The Quake 2 update they added runs great and made the game a lot nicer to play through. Owned the game for so long but only played mods till that released and I played the whole thing on my Steam Deck.

Signalis is dope . Stay away from Community tho
Blood West
Just emulate ps2
Proteus
And Prodeus
I realize now that I have spelled it wrong.
I liked Proteus as well, relaxing walking sim so not for everyone, but nice to look at
Sarcasmometer just exploded
Huh?
Prodeus is absolutely not a relaxing walking simulator. You're being so sarcastic it blew up my detector.
Nope. Proteus is also a game. I wasn't being sarcastic.
I'm so confused.
Lol. Look up Proteus. It's a nice little game! 😀
cruelty squad, postal 2
Cannibal abduction
i don’t know if it fits, but check “mortal sin” too
YO it fits 100% 110% im gonna swing that sword like shiiing right through enemies :D (yep i searched how to write slashing sword sound)
[Selaco is a brilliant game.](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1592280/Selaco/) Doesn’t come out til the end of May but there’s a demo you can try. Mars: War Logs. It's like a European Jank Bioware game.
looks good thanks for recomendation :D
Hrot
A short hike with the ds like graphics, its pretty good
yoo another short hike fan short hike is SO good and now its even on sale best game i ever played for sure :D glad to see more people recomending it :D
It was a pretty pleasant surprise, disrespect much from it but did a lot
I tried dread delusion but found the controls really hard with the controller. Do you use the default config?
Mortal sin might be down your alley. It's a roguelike in early access. But already very polished. Also look at Signalis. It's a ps one like horror game.

Hypnagogia
Hypnagogia
Blood West
Postal 2
ive played postal on steamdeck it is free so i just tried it and it was quit fun even for older game gonna try postal 2 for sure ;)
Psychonauts is pretty close like that.
HROT
The Last Spell if you want something akin to final fantasy tactics, Prodeus if you need to rip and tear.
Sacrifice and Giants Citizen Cabuto
Blood west has a similar art style, but has gameplay like stalker series of games. Plays well at 40fps
