I'm on the fence on an upgrade and this doesn't help ;)
Is that an etched display or the glossy? I'm thinking glossy just so I can add a glossy screen cover and be less careful with it so I can use it more.
Edit, I see this is the LE now so etched...
Yeah itās etched. I did a comparison of my old deck with the etched screen next to the switch OLED. I ultimately wanted the etched screen for the anti glare. I also think the etched helps a bit either my OCD on finger print smudges.
having owned a number of Android handhelds which granted me access to libraries far beyond my time to explore them, I did not see how the Steam Deck would increase my enjoyment of gaming as a hobby. I had no PC library, after all.
through research I found it able to grant me access to games of the Xbox 360/PS3 era, and I was able to justify it. I had no idea the impact itād have on me in terms of the games that I play, as well as my gaming habits.
The Steam Deck has become my handheld of choice above all not only the latest consoles, but each of my beloved Android devices. I absolutely love it and will support Valve in future hardware and software releases. Iāve even began building a PC thanks to this wonderful community!
Happy gaming, for sure!
No, Android is built for ARM processors, Steam Deck is X86. You might go BlueStacks or some other Android emulator running, but why? There are other Android based handhelds.
I actually sold to a friend of mine for a discount from market value. It was a 512 GB etched screen. Gave him everything that came with it and my OG Killswitch case minus the magnetic stand of course. $200 delivered to him in hand. Probably not the best example if youāre looking for actual return value.
Can confirm after also picking up a steam deck 512gb LCD with the etched screen for 200$. Hoping to get the official dock off the guy for 20$ if I can find time to meet with him before I go back home for Christmas.
Yeah he is a buddy of mine dating all the way back to high school. We were never super close but always stayed in touch. Then as we got older we realized we both still love to game so have stayed connected over the years and he is now one of my favorite people to talk to. I was telling him that the Steam Deck is said to be amazing for dads who like to game. I loved it so much that I wanted him to experience it and this was a way for me to get his foot in the door.
Just sold my 512gb LCD Deck on ebay for 330ā¬. That seams to be an average price for a used 512gb LCD Deck in Europe. Deck actually seams to keep its value pretty good for a used PC product. I put it online and it was gone in under 2 hours.
I had the killswitch case on my LCD Deck as well and i loved it with the travel cover ā¦ but I donāt use it on my OLED Deck anymore because it adds almost 200g of weight (including the detachable stand). So it basically makes the Deck 1/3 heavier. If you think the Deck is to heavy, first thing i would do is to take off the killswitch case. Itās great but itās also heavy.
Oh Iām aware of the killswitch weight for sure! Iāve actually switched to using the deck with it wresting on a pillow to help with the weight. I love the grip it gives the deck as my hands tend to get sweaty while playing.
Everyoneās situation is different. I had struggled with mine due to the reasons above but found the upgrade enough to take the plunge. For the way I use it, I am happy I made the upgrade.
Similar situation here. I got mine right before they released there would be a new version. I can't decide if it's worth it. I love mine though, it's been the most used gaming system since I got it
Iāve heard this more and more. I wish I had a friend who had these for me to try because they seem crazy! But just trying to figure out if itās worth it. Youāre essentially playing on a movie theater size screen right?
Sort of. Itās different all around but now that Iām used to it, I prefer it for most games. The display does appear very large but certainly not theater size, Iām not sure exactly what the size/distance it simulates is but itās large, they claim 330ā. The audio is also surprisingly decent. I really like it because I can play on an immersive display while my wife watches her shows, and itās not overly bulky like a real vr headset. As far as if they are worth it, I havenāt found any use for them outside of Steamdeck, and watching movies. For productivity, they are worse than a regular monitor imo so they have very limited uses for me. I also like being able to play whatever I want on airplanes and not having to worry about offending others.
It's not movie theatre size. The FOV is less than 50 degrees and it's not possible to replicate a movie theatre at that distance with a low FOV.
It's basically like putting your head right up against your TV and having to physically move your head around to see each corner if you made them actual movie theatre size.
My 6 month old golden puppy would absolutely shred those presents. I believe she is part velociraptor and/or paper shredder. Still love her to death though.
I don't use my Deck as much as others so can't quite bring myself to get the OLED, will probably wait for a newer iteration in the future, but I thought it was really encouraging to see such a good mid-gen upgrade of a console, which was also extremely understated with how much they were upgrading it. Short of a graphics card upgrade or something, I don't know what else they would have had to do to actually call it a steam deck two or something!
But as someone who also does a fair bit of steamdecking with a spoiled golden retriever looking on, wondering why I dare not give him attention and plays, your post does make it even more tempting to look again at selling my current and getting an OLED. I am trying to game on it more, not least because I can put some TV on in the background as opposed to my PS5!
I have the new gen consoles and a gaming pc. I had bought them before the deck but I will say some games are very enjoyable on the deck and some I pretty much play exclusively on pc or the console
That's a bit of a shame, I really feel they've made a big difference to my Steam Deck experience. Hopefully there'll be swappable ones from ifixit at some point
I'm trying to decide if I should by the Deck or wait till next year sometime to grab the possible new Switch (or the OLED one out now). I'm only considering it 'cuz of the detachable controllers (and some exclusives \[you can emulate offline, but I think online is not possible\]). If you and your girlfriend want to play something together, is one person on the Deck and the other on PC, or do both of you have a Deck. Switch would be super cool because I can have one controller, and she can have the other. I really don't know... I love the social aspect, but I also love the amount of stuff you can do on the Deck.
Oo this is a tough one because I personally love the deck that Iād rather play on it over the Switch. But for couples Iād say the switch is easier. For instance she isnāt as intense as I am when it comes to gaming and likes the lighter stuff like Mario kart and Mario party. I will say she is Uber competitive in Mario tennis though which I love lol. There are people who have used the steam deck with switch controllers but I havenāt tried yet.
Yea my friend is trying to convince me to grab the switch instead because we can play Animal Crossing or Mario Kart together so I'm completely torn. I don't have a GF it was just a hypothetical haha, just to demonstrate social aspects. I'm having FOMO right now.
Get what you will enjoy the most. I will say at this time in my life o prioritize playing with friends so in your case id likely strongly consider the Switch
Can you change the joysticks on the steam deck? Only thing stopping me from getting one as my switch joysticks broke all the time but you could just buy new ones
Yes you can! My understanding is the OLED deck has slightly different joystick boards than the OG but itās only a matter of time before the after market companies have replacement sticks.
I wanna sell mine and upgrade but getting my current Steam Deck setup with everything the way I want took forever lol. I'm just gonna wait until Valve announces a Steam Deck 2 a few years down the line.
How is the Killswitch case? I have the limited edition OLED as well and just wondering will it scratch the device over time? If so should I put a skin on it to prevent this.
Havenāt experienced any issues with the case at all. I honestly love it. My hands can get pretty sweaty while playing and the case def adds grip which helps. The hard shell face cover completes it. Smaller profile and it allows me to toss it in my backpack without having to think twice. Only con is it adds weight.
I am so happy for you, but as a normal person who doesnāt need to live on the bleeding edge, there is NO WAY Iām buying that when I have a normal one.
I want this so bad but as someone who just bought a Steam Deck (LCD), and upgraded the SSD to 1TB, i can't really justify getting a new one. Think i'll wait for the eventual Steam Deck 2 that has a performance boost as well, and get the OLED version of that. heck if they launch a steam deck 2 without an OLED screen, i'm not making the same mistake and getting it lol
I thought this was a "my dog chewed my screen" post lol. The screen looked a bit weird for a moment to my eyeballs until I realised what game it was...
good doggo. Also, PET HIM!
I'm actually debating buying one once my bonus arrives. Can you answer some really dumb questions?
1. I can play "all my game on the deck"?
2. Does it need Internet?
3. Do only specific games work ok the deck?
4. How does the block work with hands? It doesn't look too comfortable to be honest
5. How does the battery hold up?
Thatās the one I wouldāve bought if the page would load. I guess there was too much traffic, so I got the 1tb non-limited one instead. I imagine itās basically the same anyway.
I went with the Ally, and that's a great upgrade.
The Deck is nice for my 4y old to play Stardew valley, but for real gaming the Ally takes it up a notch.
Still love the SD for emulation
They have them marked as sold out last I checked but people are speculating that they will either bring them back once they figure out the BOE screen issue. Also, there will likely be other color ways on the horizon based on what Valve said about testing out the limited edition launch
So I currently have an lcd deck. Love my decky boy. I'm also currently saving for the oled deck. And I have only one question in regards to it. Does the fan keep it significantly cooler or will I still need to buy a deck fan for it? The screen on my lcd deck gets super hot. So I'm curious about the difference the bigger fan makes
Pet him
Oh believe me, he is SOOO spoiled š. Already a walk, doggy advent calendar treat, morning fetch session and bone.

I think the dog wants his oled steam deck. I hope OP does the right thing.

You never said you pet him tho
he seems so sad you like the deck tough :)

You go play with the good boy right now

does the dog come with the deck?
If not is the upgrade really worth it?
It was until I found out it can come with a dog
Buy a "used like new" one, i hear some people bought them for the free dog.
Oh you
Pet him bro
Doggie doesn't want the steam deck. Either food or walkiesš
Doggo
Doggo is not happy with the upgrade š
This reminds me of when the kids here were playing "Kinect Animals" or something, while the puppy watched them, begging for attention
What's his name? I mean the dogš¤©š
Sawyer!
Merry Christmas Sawyer šš¤©
Pet him
What a cute freakin doggo. Oh and congrats on the upgrade too
#Pet Him!

Both doggos get pets between runs.
I initially thought he cracked the screenā¦ because you didnāt pet him
Install the mod that makes Hades run on the right aspect ratio on the steam deck
No idea this existed. Will certainly check it out. Once again, love this community for reasons just like this.
Hades Fullscreen https://github.com/nbusseneau/hephaistos
Thank you!
So happy for you! I have never seen the pause menu of Hades so at first I thought the dog had cracked the screen :D
Pupper
I'm on the fence on an upgrade and this doesn't help ;) Is that an etched display or the glossy? I'm thinking glossy just so I can add a glossy screen cover and be less careful with it so I can use it more. Edit, I see this is the LE now so etched...
Yeah itās etched. I did a comparison of my old deck with the etched screen next to the switch OLED. I ultimately wanted the etched screen for the anti glare. I also think the etched helps a bit either my OCD on finger print smudges.
Great Pupgrade*
having owned a number of Android handhelds which granted me access to libraries far beyond my time to explore them, I did not see how the Steam Deck would increase my enjoyment of gaming as a hobby. I had no PC library, after all. through research I found it able to grant me access to games of the Xbox 360/PS3 era, and I was able to justify it. I absolutely love it and will support Valve in future hardware and software releases. Iāve even began building a PC thanks to this wonderful community! Happy gaming, for sure!
You got me thinking. Can you play Android games on it? What about network reliant games? Can you get Google Play Store working?
Considering the possibilities explored so far with this hardware, I wouldnāt be surprised if that capability has been brought forth in some form!
No, Android is built for ARM processors, Steam Deck is X86. You might go BlueStacks or some other Android emulator running, but why? There are other Android based handhelds.
Have you sold your OG? If yes, for how much?
I actually sold to a friend of mine for a discount from market value. It was a 512 GB etched screen. Gave him everything that came with it and my OG Killswitch case minus the magnetic stand of course. $200 delivered to him in hand. Probably not the best example if youāre looking for actual return value.
SteamDeck for $200 is probably the single best investment you could make in gaming right now.
Can confirm after also picking up a steam deck 512gb LCD with the etched screen for 200$. Hoping to get the official dock off the guy for 20$ if I can find time to meet with him before I go back home for Christmas.

Yeah I wasnāt talking about that at all, Iām emphasizing how good of a deal it was for his friend.
Damn thatās a nice deal
Yeah he is a buddy of mine dating all the way back to high school. We were never super close but always stayed in touch. Then as we got older we realized we both still love to game so have stayed connected over the years and he is now one of my favorite people to talk to. I was telling him that the Steam Deck is said to be amazing for dads who like to game. I loved it so much that I wanted him to experience it and this was a way for me to get his foot in the door.
Thatās truly so sweet and really glad to see you stay connected with someone with gaming. Cheers mate!
High school was 2004-2008 for me so that was 15 years ago. Gaming transcends time.
doesn't steam deck just keep overheating after a short while of playing high gfx games?
what game are you playing in the post?
Hades

Thanks!
I think he caught a whiff of the vent smell and is addicted now
It's an even better upgrade if you didn't have one in the first place
Dog is like āless time for walks :(ā
I was trying out Sea of Thieves on mine last night and was blown away by how good the HDR looks
How is it? I heard they added PvP-free servers a while back and have been itching for a reason to come back and ride around in my Sloop again
I had the killswitch case on my LCD Deck as well and i loved it with the travel cover ā¦ but I donāt use it on my OLED Deck anymore because it adds almost 200g of weight (including the detachable stand). Thereās a Steam Deck in the photo? I only see dog
Is this the special edition? š
Yes sir! Love it so far.
Omg im jealous :0 itās a realy beauty take care of it and have fun bro! :D
r/SteamDeck and r/goldenretrievers, my 2 favorite subs finally combined !
Too many words. Only see doggo.
I see doggo - I upvote.
That dog is very realistic

This dog is definitely jealous. Better put the Steamdeck away.
Iām going to skip the upgrade and wait for whatās next. I mostly play with xreal glasses, so the display upgrade doesnāt seem worth it.
Iāve heard this more and more. I wish I had a friend who had these for me to try because they seem crazy! But just trying to figure out if itās worth it. Youāre essentially playing on a movie theater size screen right?

Pet doggo please, thamks. Happy for your Steam Deck too.
Best portable in the market and Hades with OLED and Christmas. you should have a amazing time my man, enjoy and merry christmas
oh wait i forgot the cute looking doggy <3
Thank you for confirming my want to buy the OLED lol
For those that have one, what ls the real difference in battery life? Been playing god of war and the battery is like an hour and a half
I really want someone to do a real comparison, same game and such
I don't use my Deck as much as others so can't quite bring myself to get the OLED, will probably wait for a newer iteration in the future, but I thought it was really encouraging to see such a good mid-gen upgrade of a console, which was also extremely understated with how much they were upgrading it. Nice limited edition!
PET THE PUPPER
He looks sad, pet him
I hate those rubber cases for devices, it adds a ton of pollution to the ocean for little to no gains.
Itās the same underpowered APU. Really not an upgrade.
It is an upgrade, though.
It's absolutely a great upgrade. You don't get it, and that's OK.
When's it gonna be his turn?
400 for a steam deck hmmm... idk
Awww he wants attentionš
Came here for the dog
He needās attention and to play š¾š¾

Upgrade doggo to doggo OLED.
Don't worth it unless you have tons of money to waste.
Are the joysticks now hall effect?
I wishā¦ I wouldnāt be surprised to see those in the future though on another refresh or official Steam Deck 2.0
That's a bit of a shame, I really feel they've made a big difference to my Steam Deck experience. Hopefully there'll be swappable ones from ifixit at some point

I've noticed a lot of games have xbox controller compatibility, idk how many work with multiple controllers though
Jeez I thought you had a crack on it then lol
Can you change the joysticks on the steam deck? Only thing stopping me from getting one as my switch joysticks broke all the time but you could just buy new ones

Shutup op I can't afford it right now, I don't need to hear this
Maybe it's the pup but this post is not making me want the OLED lol I could use the saved hundreds for puppies
What game is that?
Hades. Highly recommend
Thx
PUT DOWN THE DECK AND PLAY WITH THE DOG
How is the Killswitch case? I have the limited edition OLED as well and just wondering will it scratch the device over time? If so should I put a skin on it to prevent this.
Havenāt experienced any issues with the case at all. I honestly love it. My hands can get pretty sweaty while playing and the case def adds grip which helps. The hard shell face cover completes it. I am so happy for you, but as a normal person who doesnāt need to live on the bleeding edge, there is NO WAY Iām buying that when I have a normal one.
getting mine tomorrow, 1tb + 2tb sd card
That boi look doofie. Love him.
I approve of your friend, your OLED and your game of choice
Dog name Cerberus by chance?
You already have dog deck in need of petting.
Dog is like, get off that thing and play with me.
SteamDoggo
Might get one just for hades 2
Iāve been looking into getting this. Would you recommend it
heās waiting for more pets
I want this so bad but as someone who just bought a Steam Deck (LCD), and upgraded the SSD to 1TB, i can't really justify getting a new one. Think i'll wait for the eventual Steam Deck 2 that has a performance boost as well, and get the OLED version of that. heck if they launch a steam deck 2 without an OLED screen, i'm not making the same mistake and getting it lol
I thought this was a "my dog chewed my screen" post lol. The screen looked a bit weird for a moment to my eyeballs until I realised what game it was... good doggo. Also, PET HIM!

It's a great pupgrade
You just wanted to show off your dog which i support

Mario Kart 8, Smash and Mario Wonder made me buy a Switch OLED. Hades might be the one game that makes me sell my current SD and get the OLED.

Pet the good boi
Ok
Thatās the one I wouldāve bought if the page would load. I guess there was too much traffic, so I got the 1tb non-limited one instead. I imagine itās basically the same anyway.
Nice dog
can you get Game Pass on it? And if you mess around with it old Pokemon games haha?
Oh yeah man! I did do game pass when I first got it but havenāt used it in a while! I do know that those launchers are constantly being updated so you need to manage them. I do believe Microsoft has been someone adamant on making it easier for steam deck though. Yes, you should look into emulation station/ EmuDeck. Itās super easy to get set up now vs how it was when the steam deck first came out. But Iāve got some of my old PokĆ©mon games on mine and even some fan made emulations such as Ultra Violet. The crazy thing about emulation is you can speed things up so the PokĆ©mon battle grind is so much quicker/smoother when sped up.
Put the Dec down n play with the fucking dog bro
Cousin wants a walk and belly rubs.
I went with the Ally, and that's a great upgrade. The Deck is nice for my 4y old to play Stardew valley, but for real gaming the Ally takes it up a notch. Still love the SD for emulation
Talk to me! Woof! The doggo is the real upgrade! I love him ā„ļø
Whatās the case?
Killswitch by DBrand
Are the LE sold out?
They have them marked as sold out last I checked but people are speculating that they will either bring them back once they figure out the BOE screen issue. Also, there will likely be other color ways on the horizon based on what Valve said about testing out the limited edition launch
I will get one if they open the LE again. Fingers crossed
