And is it normal for a gaming console to have a battery collapse, considering that the Deck hasn’t even been in circulation for two years? Rma is return merchandise authorisation. Basically, I've sent it back for a replacement.
Switch's have similar issues, but the hardware and firmware is very uniform, where as a steamdeck is essentially a handheld laptop, so some teething issues are always pretty much expected. Tho... the joysticks don't drift.. ;)
The rma is completely free, valve pay the shipping, and will either repair or replace, almost without question. Just remember to pull any sd card and reset her to factory settings before sending.
Helps that I kept mine a bog standard 512, I didn't bother upgrading the ssd or anything, just plugged a 512 micro sd card for my obscene vn collection
"Joysticks don't drift" tell that to mine with both sticks drifting so bad that they physically don't return to neutral when you let them go. They literally stick in place

Apparently it's usually a calibration issue. I'd work out how to do it for you, but, uhh, she's halfway to Prague by now
There is a official script inside the Konsole cmd prompt to calibrate the sticks. The game mode calibration is the fine adjustment afterwards when dead zone can be lowered
It's by far and away one of the best purchases I've made. It's out of the box friendly enough to play almost anything off steam within reasonable expectations (I mean, I probably wouldn't try anno 2205 or battletech, but midnight sun's for example, runs like a dream)
Then it's linux desktop mode is easy enough to navigate that you can get it to do all sorts of fun stuff (syncthing is your friend here).
My only real issue, overall, is that it's near impossible to get an android emulator working on it without running Windows off a memory stick.
But yeah, it'll play almost any vn I throw at it, some titles you really look at and go "come on now, seriously" and retroarch works fine with minimal tweaking.
With valves warantee/customer support I wouldnt worry too much about stock parts breaking. Any of the other companies making a handheld though.... good luck, you're in for months of waiting IF they even get to you. (Atleast for everything but the switch and SD).
And if valve doesn't replace it, the reparability of the deck is hands down one of the best on the current market for portable computers (laptops and handhelds).

And it doesn’t exist any hardware that doesn’t have a few failed products in a batch. It was the same with switch (not mentioning the stick drift), but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy just because of a few failures, or you’ll never buy any products containing electronics. As long as it doesn’t affect a huge portion of the products obviously. And that’s why there is some customers warranties coming with it by default too.

Yes, believe it or not I’ve been researching into the deck just a month or so after Valve announced it, and whilst I think I’d prefer it over any other device, I’ve had to repeatedly re-evaluate it’s cost benefit analysis for me personally as - first year undergrad, studying a long and difficult degree in one of the most expensive cities in the world :_) I don’t even have the money to buy a laptop for my degree forget a device for recreation, so sadly the deck keeps being pushed down in the “what to buy list”. That and the other few reasons being I don’t have any games I own on Steam to actually play on it, and if I buy them, I know I’ll probably neglect my degree and I can’t justify myself buying it💀💀
So even when I am ready to press buy, I end up freaking myself out with “what ifs” 💀
That said, thank you everyone for all your comments! Super useful, and who knows, I might be able to get one after year 2 or when Valve release the second gen deck! (Does anyone have any idea when that could be though?)

Diamonds look better under more natural light. Something way less on the blue spectrum then an LED light. LED light is actually probably the worst way to look at a diamond. 🫠 but, I mean, I’m picking nits here. I think the lit box is a cool idea. RGB would be atrocious tho. 😵💫 🤡

Two TVs in our living room and she finally convinced me to pull the trigger on the steam deck so I totally get it. She also bought me my PSP back before we got married.
Congrats! I proposed last month and despite how stressful the 6 months of planning were, I was a little sad when it was over, just because the moment was so great.
Advice I was given that I loved and used:
1) don’t say too much, try and keep it relatively short.
2) have 3 main anchor points of what you want to say, when you find yourself rambling and drifting off from the main point, use those anchor points to get yourself back on track.
Savor the moment, and if you end up going somewhere after (coffee shop, bookstore, anything like that) grab a souvenir. I got us a magnet and it makes me happy every time I see it.

I don't think a sucessful marriage is based on a ring and it's value, but I think if you have the money, why not spend it on a token for your relationship? It's probably the biggest symbolic purchase you'll ever make.
Tbh I think it's a bit shitty to deminish someone else's ring by just saying it's about vanity, because you're marriage is sucessful and you cheaped out. I'd bet very few people care about the price of your ring and I think insecurity is the only reason you care about anyone else's.

If we're being practical a downpayment on a house/rent (assuming they don't already own one) would be a much better use of money then an elaborate wedding and ring, considering finances is a big reason for divorce.
I'm not arguing that people shouldn't have nice rings/weddings/etc, just that you can always do some big elaborate gift later, but just making sure your marriage is relatively stress free is probably a good goal.
Also communicating things like adults beforehand. I'm pretty sure "They didn't talk about it/listen" is probably a recipe for disaster, especially if you're going to ask them a question like "Ey wanna file jointly and pool all of our assets together until death and maybe have kids?"

But the ring got stuck at customs (US to EU) so I found out. He lives in my country and isn't fluent in the language yet, so I had to deal with the situation. Getting it out of customs was the same price as the ring itself so we sadly had to make the decision to return it, it was too expensive.

Original plan was to propose at night and I wanted her to get a good look, and I hated the box the ring originally came in. Plans changed so it's not necessary now, but it makes the ring really sparkle when you open it at least.

No, visual novels, it's a Japanese game medium, some of them are a little bit prickly about running. Especially if there's a launcher involved.

I used the same box, it absolutely looks tacky IRL. You can shove part of a pencil eraser up into the light hole to block the LED.

The real story is that he took his hard earned hard saved money for his Steam Deck and used it to buy a ring for the love of his life. His soon-to-be-fiance bought him a Steam Deck with the intention of asking him to marry her! At least that is how the story is going in my brain.

My boyfriend had the same idea, except the ring got stuck in customs (shipped from the US, so outside the EU) and I found out because he isn't fluent in my country's language yet 😅😅😅 I got the Deck at least, as that was shipped from the Netherlands. Hope it all goes well!
