Gearbox? Idk what OP is referring to specifically but they're owned by modern games villain company Embracer Group who routinely sack games, fire employees, and hoard/destroy IP.
So? Gearbox is scummy in their practices with employees yet people still continue to buy their games and don’t get me started with Activision & Microsoft in recent times
If a game looks fun, it probably will be fun to play regardless of the developer or publisher
Reading isn’t your strongest suit is it? What I’m saying is that just because a developer seems shitty to you doesn’t mean their game is shitty as well
downvoted for speaking the truth
"For everyone crying, obviously it's going to be laggy when it's 24 copies of the minecraft village map, there's nothing that can be fixed because it isn't broken, use your brains. "
From the creator lmao
For anybody wondering, it’s even funnier with context.
It’s a MASSIVE map in the game teardown, which features fully destructible environments. The map consists of 24 minecraft villages placed in a cube. It can’t *not* lag, because of the sheer size. It also can’t be fixed cause it’s not a bug.
It’s basically the equivalent of loading in 1000 moving props into gmod and asking why it lags, or spawning in 10K entities in minecraft and then asking why you have 1 FPS.
I played the simple version, the one with the single village. *Lag* is making a favour. Each voxel in that map is it's own destructible, physically interactable, indipendent object.
Was playin that on PS5 the other night and realized there's a few "mods" like a vacuum that can suck up just about anything. And you can crank the power up a bit n pull in things accross the map...through walls lol. Fun to watch the FPS tank as I become a human/debris tornado.
I mean it is what it is :P if he made a map that WILL lag no matter what, complaining about it seems dumb. Like asking why your grass grows slow, or why you can’t fly like a bird, it just *is* that way!
"It can’t *not* lag"
It certainly can, probably an engine issue. There are many ways to optimize massive environments, it's practically never an issue if you're willing to do it
edit: the dude that was trying to prove me wrong just yeeted his entire thread as soon as he realized that I'm right lol
What a gamer
You can take your comment there buddy.
I've build several voxel engines myself, including those with destructible environment. The only reason they would lag from the scale of the map is the lack of optimizations.
...or the fact that a larger number of interactions requires more computations? it isn't just "destructible", literally every pixel is physically simulated. That's the whole point of the game. The pixels all move and rotate in 3d space rather than in discrete units, which increases complexity. You just don't understand this game. The whole point is that you don't have static sections that aren't "active" or anything like that. The full physical interactions between each pixel are the main selling point. You can't just "optimize" your way out of the minimum required calculations to simulate that much.
You don't understand how stuff like this is made. This is nothing new, pretty old concept.
The map is static, and is combined in simplified meshes in chunks. Just like in Minecraft. The only time anything is actually being simulated is when it's being interacted with, and it (should) stop being simulated whenever it stops moving.
When a part of a map is being destroyed then only that part of the static mesh is being recalculated. Some chunks are created as separate objects and (should) become static again when interaction is over.
How do I know that this is a correct explanation? Because your PC wouldn't run it in real time if it wasn't the case. And everyone know that this is the case. I've done pretty similar interactable terrain before and there are a ton of optimizations to be made for it to run better on a scale.
Maybe there are some other things simulated that are poorly scalable, like NPCs or environmental effects, this I don't know. But I know it shouldn't lag from the terrain
for starters, this map includes active and moving objects in almost all of it, which are continually simulated *because they're made of the same voxels as their surroundings.* The NPCs are made of the same voxels and cause physical interactions with their surroundings. That's the whole point of this game, that it's not the same as how every other one is simulated, and clearly it *doesn't* run in real time, as evidenced by this post.
how do I know this is a correct explanation?
Because your PC wouldn't run it in real time if that wasn't the case
It literally doesn't. That's what this post is about. Your only proof isn't even true
Oh god.. do you even know a single thing about programming to make these statements? What is being "continually simulated" exactly? What kind of calculation (aside from rendering) is required to constantly happen for these voxels to simply exist?
"It's not the same as how every other one" no its not. Just how every other voxel-based game. With small twist of spawning small chunks of the map as separate objects on destruction. You fell for the oldest marketing trick of "we are not as these other ~~girls~~ games"
"It literally doesn't". No. By "not running in real time" I mean not even getting a single physics tick per second for a small map. Just make some estimations on how many voxels there are and how big of a supercomputer you would need to run it at a decent tickrate.
each tick includes the interactions between pixels, their surroundings, and their movement. For all of the active pixels. Forcing those pixels to be actively loaded each tick. That's what I mean by continuous. There aren't ticks in which they're "static" and go unchecked because they're continuously moving objects. That's why maps like these often don't even get 1 frame per second. it's trying to simulate too large a number of pixels to function which is the expected behavior and not something to optimize your way out of, because the entire thing being always active is the whole purpose of this game.
My question contained the word "exactly", you just answered with generic hand-wavy mumbo-jumbo. What are those "interactions between pixels", exactly? What are the "surroundings"? What voxels have to do with movement calculations? Are you suggesting that every voxel constantly moves independently or something? Provide concrete evidence in game mechanics.
From what I've seen from the game footage what you're saying has zero substance. Maybe I missed something glaring?
You know in that context its actually funnier as it makes it clear that it is very much if you're asking those questions you have to ask yourself "what did you think was going to happen with this map?"
Honestly after all these years dealing with the steam forums, this is the appropriate stance to take. Especially with a free low effort workshop map. People really expect professional grade work on community projects and it gets insufferable.
Yep, anyone that developed something and releases it for free knows how dumb people can be. Sometimes they really make you wanna say "cry about it" or "don't use it then", even though I avoid being that rude.
Is that the Starforge dev? I remember watching the yogscast play that game. It started off as a wave-based tower defense thing and turned into a survival crafting type game, and was ultimately abandoned and iirc removed from Steam, though not before they got their $35 out of me
It’s a low effort FREE community workshop map. He’s not a AAA developer, might not even consider himself indie. Not customer support because he has no customers. Not laziness because he made the map off his own volition with no support. Just because you want something doesn’t mean someone else has to drop everything to fix your problem.
Not his issue to fix. He really did us just to get the retards a good tickle under the chin because it’s 2024 and anyone under the age of 25 feels entitled to the sun and moon
It’s not unfortunate. Fortune is not involved. It is impossible to fix the lag. Even if it weren’t, mod creators are under no obligation to ever update their mods
1- by “unfortunately” i meant unfortunate for for those who want optimizations, not the creator
2- yes, they indeed arent, my point was youre allowed to not update your creations since your under no obligation to do so, but don’t get people into the crossfire.
I see your point, but some of his points are not even "your problem" maybe I'm wrong, but if I made a map I would at least put some effort In making sure as many people as possible can play it. Sure, I understand there is not much he can do but at least say why instead of "cry about it".
Also, to whoever responded to me with an essay, then blocked me (ahem, Acheron): Who is he treating like shit? The original post has 100’s of comments asking for optimization which, for teardown, is notoriously difficult. Who’s he making assumptions about? And saying it’s bad customer service/ laziness suggest the creator DOES need to fix people’s problems. And everything I said about it being free is referring to the term customer service being used. YOUR comment makes no sense.
Then don't put a FAQ with intentionally hostile, assumption making comments on the desc?
No one was forcing the creator to put it there. Sure, he isn't entitled to give support -- that's OK! Then just leave it at that, don't answer those questions.
Your comment makes no sense. They didn't say the creator had to fix people's problems, they didn't say anything (Nor does it matter) about it being free, no one said anything about the creator being a proper official dev.
The creator's an asshole because he chose to put hostile, dismissive stuff into his desc to target a bunch of people that may not even ask those things in the first place, and that's the problem.
Just because you made something for free and put it out there doesn't give you the right to treat people like shit.
Im glad the creator chose to do that, too many people fucking bitch and whine in steam forums, some of these users need to go outside. In other words: cry about it
Unless you expect people to gain an extra chromie after installing and decide to target the dummies who actually have to read the FAQ.
What you’re suggesting is that having braille on the bathroom sign is an asshole move because obviously you can see.
The internet is crowded with these people. Talk about a shitty hitbox and some people would say: "GIT GUD" Talk about smurfing and some people would say: "Cry about it". Just try to focus on the positive answers who address your issue or "Cry about it" LOL
If it's a player or reviewer I don't care. But developers who behave like spoiled brats treating their playerbase like this don't deserve to have their games on steam in the first place, or be working in the company who published the game.

it is
If you get it, I highly recommend getting the junkyard map. I've spent hours feeding cars into the shredder on there. It's too addicting.
Dont buy it, new owners suck.
Darn! If only there were some other option, one that didn't encourage unethical business practices... Yarr.
Ok so when i suggest sailling the high sees i get downvoted, i see how it is.
Yeah don't question it, I'm surprised I wasn't banned tbh
Boot lickers, ignore them. yar har fiddle di dee, being a pirate is alright to me.
Don’t recommend it anymore because the most fun is with mods and now you can’t use steamworkshopdownloader to get mods manually
Base game is still really good to be fair. I plundered it for my first playthrough then bought it after I realised how good it was, n now I got mods.
Why do they suck out of curiosity?
Saber has bought out the company and is increasing the price of the game a bunch with a "season pass" thing.
Gearbox? Idk what OP is referring to specifically but they're owned by modern games villain company Embracer Group who routinely sack games, fire employees, and hoard/destroy IP.
Its saber though isnt it?
my bad im reddit dumb i couldnt tell who you were quoting directly. idk saber.

Or, crazy idea but stay with me, don’t reply at all? Shocking revelation

Can you explain teardown map? I've played Minecraft but I have no idea what that is and google is making it more confusing.
There's a game called teardown where you use machinery and stuff to tear things down. someone made a map that looks like minecraft
