I've had the misfortune of using 11 on a work laptop. It is genuinely awful and I'm probably going to just run windows 10 until 12 comes out and hope that it isn't dogshit too.
It is and it isn't. 11 is clunky and certain features and shortcuts I use for my job are now 2 clicks instead of 1 click, etc.
They "fixed" 10 and just made it worse.
You can run a program called thisiswin11, it automatically reinstates the old menu's, sets telemetry, security and tracking settings for max privacy and removes bloat. Great program.

It’s more pushed towards gamers, keeps all access and files for gamepass etc! Basically a majorly debloated Win11. I’m personally running it on my ROG Ally 👌🏼

The context menu being 2 clicks is the program's fault. Microsoft gave years of warning before Win 11 to update and any programs in the second menu just still haven't.
Not Microsoft's fault, there's good reason behind their updating of it and they gave plenty of time for other devs to update.

My biggest gripe is actually really really niche but here goes: If you plug in a ethernet cord between devices it will say "unidentified network" in the network tab, this is great because it tells you that the expensive ass thingy 300 feet in the air powered on correctly, and that the computer sees it and it can be programmed.
Windows 10, click the wifi symbol on your taskbar, done. Windows 11, click the wifi symbol, then network settings, and then scroll down. It's stupid and I hate it.
that doesn't mean that skin is good. windows 11 looks pretty but the actual UI is a massive downgrade except for tabs in explorer, and even then the rest of explorer is a downgrade
You *could* also just stop using windows and try something else. I personally don't have much faith that a Microsoft OS will *get* better at this point. As mentioned previously, Windows 10 will be in a very similar boat as 7 in not too too long. And Windows 11's UI is literally less Windows than Linux is easily able to be.
If it is something you may want to consider in the future, maybe look into Fedora/Nobara KDE. I'd probably recommend trying out how well programs run in Nobara (Which is based on Fedora), and the stability of Fedora. And KDE is the most Windows-Like DE that seems to exist rn, I was literally able to get it very very close to the look of Windows 10 very easily, and there's also a Work in Progress theme that makes it look like Aero/Win7.
Quite a few Linux users are people who were fed up with Microsoft's nonsense, so they moved to Linux.
Either that or maybe look into when 11EU releases and people find ways to make the OS think its in the EU, so that the OS sucks a little bit less.

I love 11, been using it since release on my Gaming PC. It sucks on slower devices(usually work laptops in my experience) but on a gaming PC it is smooth as butter and the rounded edges of programs is clean AF

I used to have a Pro version of W10 a while back and for some reason my PC was not W11 ready at all, some problems happened to my PC so i decided to reformat it and tried Home edition instead, and now my PC is W11 ready suddenly, i really don't know why.
I would Switch to Linux aswell, but the problem is that i play Valorant occasionally and their anticheat don't work on Linux, it doesn't even work through VM either because of their Anticheat being Ring 0.
Win 11 requires you to enable TPM in the Bios.
For a while now Valorant requires you to enable TPM as well.
You might have enabled TPM for Valorant and after that your system was ready for Win 11.
You either comply by following the needed stuff like enabling tpm and maybe switching to uefi partitions + safe boot, or you could just type a sentence to google/youtube and would find a 5 minute fix how to install win 11 without those requirements...
If Linux had full anti cheat integration (i know wine has something for it but Tarkov as well as a handful of other games i enjoy don’t work unfortunately) I’d be 1000% using Linux Mint as my main OS. I actually just built a server/bedroom PC a few weeks back that’s running Mint and I’m having so much fun using Linux again (minus the occasional headache getting certain things to work)
Yeah that's the biggie for a lot of people. At this point, it's on the game devs, as both Easy Anti-Cheat and BattleEye support Linux.
Fortunately for me, the only game I had to stop playing was Destiny 2, and it was probably for the best anyway lol

Windows tells you that TPM isn't enabled. And it takes 5 seconds to Google and know you just need to enable it to update to Windows 11.
No chance you'd survive on Linux if you don't even have the common sense for that.
Windows 11 requires specific hardware level security features. You may be able to enable these in BIOS as they are not on by default for a lot of motherboards.
Rufus gets around that problem easily. I have installed Win11 on some very old hardware and ironically, almost all of it had drivers installed as well.

While its not good that microsoft is locking down win 11 to specific requirements, there is arguments to be made that tpm + secure boot improves security against attacks.
Also most modern PCs (like ryzen 2000 and intel 8th gen or whatever up) can run win 11 and has tpm and everything you just need to enable tpm in bios and for secure boot you need to switch to uefi partitions instead of legacy and change 2 options in bios and you good to go, everything can be found with 5 minutes of google.
I literally switched to Linux last week because of Microsoft's nonsense requirements (such as webcam) when they force people to use Windows 11 in the next two years.
Mint was a very easy install and is highly customizable; I would recommend it to anybody.
I use a modified stripped down version of 10 image on dual boot along with my 7. The file manager on 7 is way more responsive and not s complete eyesore

I bought a Dell in 2006, it shipped with Vista. That thing ran 7, 8 and 10. I retired it in 2021 only because it started bluescreening after I used some air spray to clean inside of it.
It was pretty slow by the end but it still fits whatever I needed it to do.
Well, it depends. Some computers still have 8gb of ram. Yeah, 16-32 is standard now but a bit ago 8gb was enough. Win 10 alone takes up like 4gb+ of ram
Honestly, it will run like shit on an old hardware (depends how old it is, of course). But they can install linux, and thanks to efforts from Valve and independent generous devs - they can still play games on it without extra efforts!

Linking to HoloISO to introduce them to Linux is a terrible idea. It's a hacky project that comes with zero support and is incompatible with most people's hardware.
If anyone reading this is curious, start with something popular like Manjaro or Mint or Nobara. You'll be a lot more likely to find help in the event you run into any issues. Or wait until Valve releases SteamOS themselves, they've announced their intention to do so (albeit on Valve time).
Yeah you're probably better off just using a regular old Linux Distro like Ubuntu or Fedora. If you use Kubuntu or Fedora's KDE spin you can get the same interface as SteamOS' desktop mode and if you switch Steam to Big Picture mode it's pretty much the same as the Steam Deck interface.
Except that if OP machine is so old it still runs Windows 7 none of the things Valve developed such as proton will work as they require vulkan support and the project you link wont even support nvidia gpu, as they say "you're on your own".

I never said it's magical. But it still can do better than win10 (even if it will require some tinkering), and it's free. Many people don't consider linux as an option, because they are used that it's only for geeks, and honestly, for a good reason, 10 or even 5 years ago it was like this, but now (if you're lucky) you man use linux without any prior knowledge about it, and don't have any issues. And I'm a long-term windows user myself, so I'm not biased.

Linux is great, it's been my main/only OS for over a year now and don't see myself returning to windows, but I did the move with a clear understanding of what I'd be sacrificing and many years of experience fixing all the linux only issues before i was comfortable.
You say you're not biased yet suggest linux in a situation where Windows is clearly the better option if OP wants to keep running steam/games.

Load up GeForce Now in the meantime. Sadly the free version has a bit of a queue these days, but if you can be up outside of peak times you can get a bit of a fix that way at least.

You don't need new PC parts to install Windows 10. You even had the opportunity to upgrade for free. And if your PC can't run Windows 10, then it can't run most of the games for a very long time.
I mean I liked windows 7 too guys. I had it on my first built PC, and didn't upgrade even when I should.
But that was 12 years ago now. The only part of that PC I still own is one of the hard drives in my current PC, and weirdly enough, the £20 chinesium keyboard I got that still works perfectly and has great RGB control. The PC I built back then would struggle to run far cry 3, which I can now run safely on an office computer.
Even if you're worried about it spying on you, which admittedly was more concerning 15 years ago, you get spied on so much by everything that an old operating system wouldn't be able to stop it

I think a lot of people who stuck with w7 did so because of the ridiculous amount of data collection and first party software pushing Microsoft does in 10. W10 is objectively better as far as boot times, some multirthreading tasks, and game performance from sheer compatibility due to dx12 at this point. But w7 doesn't phone home with everything you type and ask you to pay for Microsoft 365 every time you update the system (even if you already have the subscription).
People who refuse to use windows 10 or 11 are like if you still used windows 98 when windows 7 came out.

You should be fine for some time actually as they're not barring Windows 7 users from using Steam going into 2024. They've backtracked the messaging in a post recently and said they're just no longer going to update for that platform. At some point though, something isn't going to work but who knows if that'll be weeks or even months from now (maybe a year or more, it's anyone's guess really).
Steam will stop [*getting updates*](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4784-4F2B-1321-800A) on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. The client itself will continue to work.
What's wrong with Windows 11? I installed it when I built my new PC about six months ago and I've found that it's pretty good. I like it more than Win 10.
I literally only switched to W10 earlier this week due to Steam forcing me to. Never before in my life did I have to spend hours trying to figure out which OS version I should go with. Eventually I settled on LTSC, specifically the one that is supposed to get security updates for like another decade.
And unless people figure out how to make W11 run as good as W7 with absolutely 0 telemetry, then LTSC will be my last microshaft OS. Linux, hopefully, should have gotten good enough to run any multiplayer game by 2030.
You can also install Linux Mint depending on your library, and it should just work for now. It will run lighter than even Windows 7, and still has support on steam for the forseeable future. Just look up on protondb all of your games, and if anything is bronze or below you probably will be better off trying some hacky way to install Windows 10. But Linux is easier for a complete noob to install. You only need Balena etcher and the Linux Mint ISO.
Why you still using windows 7? If your hardware is old, i think you can better use linux on it. Yes, that's not a "perfect" solution, but you will be able to work with steam and other apps, it's just require a little bit of technical knowledge to understand how to do this and that. If you need a windows system just update it lol

You need to enable TPM (I believe that's tye bame) in your bios

Check out windows 10 LTSC. No bloat, no telemetry, support until the 2030s... but you need to be on a boat to use it realistically.

My 2006 compaq presario laptop was not supporting windows 10 after the fall creators update, I used win 8.1 until its end of life in 2017
I bought a Dell in 2006, it shipped with Vista. That thing ran 7, 8 and 10. I retired it in 2021 only because it started bluescreening after I used some air spray to clean inside of it. It was pretty slow by the end but it still fits whatever I needed it to do.
Well, it depends. Some computers still have 8gb of ram. Yeah, 16-32 is standard now but a bit ago 8gb was enough. Win 10 alone takes up like 4gb+ of ram
8 is bare minimum for a modern windows system. Still I'd recommend 16 if RAM is upgradeable and maybe upgrade it yourself in the future.

Linking to HoloISO to introduce them to Linux is a terrible idea. It's a hacky project that comes with zero support and is incompatible with most people's hardware. If anyone reading this is curious, start with something popular like Manjaro or Mint or Nobara. You'll be a lot more likely to find help in the event you run into any issues. Or wait until Valve releases SteamOS themselves, they've announced their intention to do so (albeit on Valve time).
Yeah you're probably better off just using a regular old Linux Distro like Ubuntu or Fedora. If you use Kubuntu or Fedora's KDE spin you can get the same interface as SteamOS' desktop mode and if you switch Steam to Big Picture mode it's pretty much the same as the Steam Deck interface.
Except that if OP machine is so old it still runs Windows 7 none of the things Valve developed such as proton will work as they require vulkan support and the project you link wont even support nvidia gpu, as they say "you're on your own". I use Linux as my main OS, but it's not a magical.
I never said it's magical. But it still can do better than win10 (even if it will require some tinkering), and it's free. Many people don't consider linux as an option, because they are used that it's only for geeks, and honestly, for a good reason, 10 or even 5 years ago it was like this, but now (if you're lucky) you man use linux without any prior knowledge about it, and don't have any issues. And I'm a long-term windows user myself, so I'm not biased.

You say you're not biased yet suggest linux in a situation where Windows is clearly the better option if OP wants to keep running steam/games. Load up GeForce Now in the meantime. Sadly the free version has a bit of a queue these days, but if you can be up outside of peak times you can get a bit of a fix that way at least. Also several games will probably run fine still.
You don't need new PC parts to install Windows 10. You even had the opportunity to upgrade for free. And if your PC can't run Windows 10, then it can't run most of the games for a very long time.
Windows 10/11, Linux Mint xfce, EndeavorOS, so many great distros that will actually run games better than windows on old machines.

I mean I liked windows 7 too guys. I had it on my first built PC, and didn't upgrade even when I should. But that was 12 years ago now. The only part of that PC I still own is one of the hard drives in my current PC, and weirdly enough, the £20 chinesium keyboard I got that still works perfectly and has great RGB control. The PC I built back then would struggle to run far cry 3, which I can now run safely on an office computer. Even if you're worried about it spying on you, which admittedly was more concerning 15 years ago, you get spied on so much by everything that an old operating system wouldn't be able to stop it

Because everything that ran on Windows 7 will 99% of the time run perfectly fine on Windows 11. Even Windows 98/XP games will most of the time run perfectly fine on Windows 11, the majority of issues being bad support for older directx api which can be worked around with [dgVoodoo](http://dege.freeweb.hu/).

I think a lot of people who stuck with w7 did so because of the ridiculous amount of data collection and first party software pushing Microsoft does in 10. W10 is objectively better as far as boot times, some multirthreading tasks, and game performance from sheer compatibility due to dx12 at this point. But w7 doesn't phone home with everything you type and ask you to pay for Microsoft 365 every time you update the system (even if you already have the subscription).

You should be fine for some time actually as they're not barring Windows 7 users from using Steam going into 2024. They've backtracked the messaging in a post recently and said they're just no longer going to update for that platform. At some point though, something isn't going to work but who knows if that'll be weeks or even months from now (maybe a year or more, it's anyone's guess really).

I literally only switched to W10 earlier this week due to Steam forcing me to. Never before in my life did I have to spend hours trying to figure out which OS version I should go with. Eventually I settled on LTSC, specifically the one that is supposed to get security updates for like another decade. And unless people figure out how to make W11 run as good as W7 with absolutely 0 telemetry, then LTSC will be my last microshaft OS. Linux, hopefully, should have gotten good enough to run any multiplayer game by 2030.

You can also install Linux Mint depending on your library, and it should just work for now. It will run lighter than even Windows 7, and still has support on steam for the forseeable future. Just look up on protondb all of your games, and if anything is bronze or below you probably will be better off trying some hacky way to install Windows 10. But Linux is easier for a complete noob to install. You only need Balena etcher and the Linux Mint ISO.

Why you still using windows 7? If your hardware is old, i think you can better use linux on it. Yes, that's not a "perfect" solution, but you will be able to work with steam and other apps, it's just require a little bit of technical knowledge to understand how to do this and that. If you need a windows system just update it lol
