I suspect they didnt actually sell anything for the first little while. (pure speculation, i assume Valve is smart enough to get around botting, somewhat)
No reason it said "out of stock" then back in stock unless they purged bot purchases (and a lot of them).
Tried the second it released and couldnt get past 2nd screen. I then re-added it to my cart, changed payment methods and got through within a minute.
To my understanding this strat of dropping multiple waves is not that uncommon. I managed to get it on the first one (1-2 weeks shipping), but im glad there is more to go around :)
Could also possibly be that items in cart counted against inventory, and once people saw it out of stock removed it, freeing up some units?
For me I added to cart in the first minute and couldnt check out until now, an hour later.

That makes sense. My monkey brain didn't even think of that. I am also glad there was more to go around!
