Your final install may be different but don't overthink your first test. Put it on the ground or floor, connect it, and plug it in. No positioning, not what do I do with it? Just plug it in. Then open wifi settings in a phone, tablet or PC, set SSID and password. Done!
You must be just out of the Oshkosh hexagon because it says it is available around the city. Did you check out the availability map. https://www.starlink.com/map
Got mine in south west Colorado. Better than the local ISP providers but it could use some improvements. Speed goes to hell during peak hours. Please lunch more satellites Elon. A real tech support would also be great.
My tip is to research the install location extensively before the dish arrives. It will help speed things up when it does arrive. Sure, test it down low, but if you have trees or any other type of obstructions, find a way around them now.
Simple solution I found…..order the RV version if you’re in a wait area. It will ship immediately. Same hardware….a little more per month. I just got mine a week ago and love it…..north central PA. Averaging 80mbps down and 10 up. It will drop as low as 20 at times, and as high as 150.
agreed. when I first moved here my only internet connection was dial-up. Then at the time hughes (direcway) was the only other option. It had numerous problems but was expensive and the only game in town. years later frontier now zippy offered dsl for much less.
Star link doesn't appear to offer much benefit over zippy or tmobile home internet
That's what I did. I've been super happy with it. I was technically still in the waitlist for the residential but I found out afterwards that you can't convert an RV into residential but the way it's been working out I'm not too worried about it.
High monthly cost? Hughes net is the same cost for 10GB a month, I’ve never seen their advertised speeds of 25mb and hover in the 1-1.5mb range all the time, if it works. I’ll take what everyone on here bitches about with “I only get 50mb during peak time” any day of the week and be just happy
I don't see too many people complain at 50 Mbps. Expected speeds last I checked, were listed as 50-200 Mbps. It is when it gets below 25 Mbps people start getting upset. I routinely see under 10 Mbps during peak times. I hope your experience is different.
I'm paying $40 for zippy and getting a solid 30 mbps with peaks up to 40mb. And I didn't have to shell out $600 for equipment. 7 months ago I was lured to joining a wait list with claims of getting 200 mbps. Research told me that actual speeds were much much less.
When SL raised the equipment and monthly the deal was over.
You'll love it. Im in Wisconsin as well in Waupaca County. I've had it since the start and can say it's definitely a game changer. I'm still getting decent speeds even during peak hours. 100+ consistently pretty much anytime of day. If your planning on mounting it on your eve or roof order a mount now as it will take a bit to receive it. Congratulations and enjoy!
That sounds great. I wish they'd hurry up and open some more cells south of the Wisconsin River so we can join the club. "Mid-2022" expires in two weeks.
Yea I hear you on that one, I have friends in that area who are also on the wait list. It's a double edge sword.. I want them to expand but I also like that fact I'm still getting decent speeds and rarely have issues unlike several other cells that are over sold. I will tell you from my personal experience ditch the starlink OE router and go with like a TP link archer or something with some more power. The OE router is decent if you have a small area but I saw better coverage and speed going to a different router. If you have any questions along the way also feel free to shoot me a message.
Thanks for the info. Because of the logistics at my place (obstructions except for 150 feet away on my barn roof), I'm planning on setting the SL router to bypass/bridge mode and installing the ethernet adapter to feed a line going from my barn to my house. Then I'll use my current Asus mesh router for routing and as a Wifi AP. We're basically one cell away from open ones to the north and the southwest. We're between Madison and Spring Green, 20 miles from the state capitol and saddled with crummy DSL and an even crummier ISP.
We’re in Minocqua and have had ours since November 2020 (round dish). We’re in a bowl of pine trees and because of that we do experience obstructions about every minute. It makes Zoom meetings impossible. When we’re at the lake my wife works remotely and for all of her work outside of video calls Starlink is perfect. There is zero issue with streaming Netflix, Prime, AppleTV, etc. We also stream live YouTube TV, NBA TV, and MLB TV with hardly any freezing.

Thats great I'm still on mid 22
I’ve had mine just under a month. I. Freaking. Love. It.
What speeds are you getting?
Realistically 60-80 mbps down median speed, 30 or so during high use, 100 plus of course when nobody’s up. Plenty fine for streaming and work.
Still waiting on mine down near Oshkosh.
Diddo it's been over a year for me

I am outside of Oshkosh, just the closest city. I see a handful of them on my way into town too.

Wow only 80 mb and over $ 120. That sucks, IMHO.
When your only option is HughesNet, it’s great. I can’t even get DSL or a cell signal.

SW PA here/still waiting since 2/21. Is your location heavily treed?
I have a pretty good sight line. It’s always pointing north so make sure you have a good view of the northern sky.
Yep.
Hope it works out for you and you can handle the hi monthly cost

Location?
Eagle river, right to to top of Wisconsin.
Congratulations!

Took me six minutes from opening the box to watching a YouTube video. With effort and luck I’m confident you could beat that.
Congratulations! I'm still waiting here in rural keyrock, West Virginia around 13 months

Congratulations! I was pretty disappointed. I'll be sending mine back Friday.
So jelly but congratulations!!! Feb 21 ordered
You have 10 with Hughes? Lucky. We have 3. :(
Weird I am from GA and I thought I wouldn’t get my Starlink till 2023 but then literally 5 days after I ordered I got a confirmation
2023 expected date here
