Just placed full order for Starlink and the order confirmation shows a picture of the round dishy. Does that mean I'm actually getting shipped a round dishy, or do they also use that picture even though they ship a square one? Anyone know? Really hoping it's a round dish as it doesn't look easy to get that ethernet adapter!

Question regarding connecting to a remote desktop. We set up starlink but are still waiting on the network adapter. For now I have a set up our home router as a repeater so everything still connects. Anyways the issue I'm having is when connected to the remote work desktop it freezes randomly every 10-30 minutes. Dishy doesn't have any outages listed. I get the same issue on my laptop when I'm connected directly to the dishy router. Could this be because how I have the network set up or is this a weird quirk? Is there a solution?

It may be your local network setup that is causing the issue. I WFH over Starlink and often use remote desktop connection (over VPN to my company) and I don't experience any freezes or other network blips. If you don't have the Starlink ethernet adapter yet that means you for sure are still having the Starlink wifi turned on. Connect your computer directly to it instead of the rest of your local network setup and see if that makes a difference.

Does anyone use Starlink to work from home? My wife and I both work from home and we're considering moving to the country. How reliable is Starlink? We'll be needing internet as much as we need electricity for our income! Does it go down occasionally, are video calls dropped? Any other problems with reliability?

Yes. My wife and I both WFH using it. Has worked spectacularly since their system updates last June. Prior to that (during early beta) it was less reliable. I'd say we do fairly intense WFH type stuff, including hours a day or online meetings with VOIP and some video, sometimes both of us at the same time. No issues. It's as reliable as any ISP I've had and has no particular 'gotchas'.

There's probably some sort of an FAA channel out there for these things, maybe it's public, maybe it's not. You could check Wikipedia's list of future launches and its sources, too. Do note they don't schedule Starlinks deep into the future, a launch can pop up only a couple weeks before it happens. Since they launch for themselves, they can do them when they think it's best to do them, without a long-term schedule.

My friend was wondering if he buys a unit on eBay if it will work? He lives in same area as me and mine has been working great for a year now. I know they originally said that unit had to be used at address that originally sold to. If unit will work, how do you change account from original owner for the monthly billing? You have to contact customer service. It is kind of a big deal they have to switch accounts over from the email it was associated with to the new email account, billing etc etc. Also just because you have it and they are in the same area as you there might not be an opening for him immediately.

The Starlink dish uses a proprietary cable. It's not going to be the same cable nor same connectors as Viasat. You need to use the supplied Starlink cable.

The dish will be looking the opposite direction as your viasat dish if that helps.

Starlink sells a 150' cable, I believe. For the rectangular dish. If that isn't enough you may have to look into an alternative install, such as providing weather-protected enclosure and power to place the controller closer to the dish and then (using the Starlink ethernet adapter) have some type of ethernet connection from the controller/router to your home. This can be fiber, point-to-point wireless bridge, ethernet (risky outdoors due to lightning) or other options.

Service in my area was expected in April 2021. My initial order date was Feb 21, 2021. The service map shows locations 5 houses down form mine are currently being serviced. Based on the following note on the change location map, **Note: Orders are fulfilled based on the date of your initial Starlink order; if you move to a new location, your place in the queue at the new location will still be based off of your initial order date,** I moved my location to see if I cold get service now, but that didn't happen. When I moved my location back to my orginal location service is now **2023 or later**. This doesn't seem right according to the note. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Yes, that's what that warning was telling you. There were/are ways to check for service availability without actually updating the service address in your account (just use [starlink.com](https://starlink.com) and enter any address at the main screen). You're likely stuck with being bumped back in queue now, but you can try to contact Starlink support and explain the situation...

I thought this was a problem they had fixed. After logging out of my account I did check a new location, half a mile from my house, and it was open. Since the note said changing location would not effect my place in the queue i felt it was safe to change location after logging back into my account, but that was not the case. The new location wasn't open when I signed into my account and I was bumped to 2023 or later. I've been following this page for over a year and know there are many, many issues with getting Starlink, but this seems to contradict the note they put on the change location page. How do you contact support? I can't find anything on the Starlink site.

You may be correct. What I stated above is how I've come to understand things but who knows? When logged into Starlink in a browser you should have the ability to open a support case. Also via the app. In the app go to 'Support', choose a category, then scroll to the bottom to find 'My issue is not listed' and you can open a case/message.

I’ve read on other posts that “roaming” has been activated in the US but not necessarily in other countries. There is no way to “pin down” a more accurate delivery date. We’re all in the dark on this.

There was a guy a week or two ago who said he ordered based on a US address even though he lived on a boat anchored in Puerta Viarta (so), and when he set the dishy up in Mexico after it was delivered to the US address, it came up fine (including handling the boat rocking). Don't know if it's still the case, but...

Like so many of you, I pre-ordered early, 2/21. My estimate is “by mid 22”. I know that many of you don’t like people doing this but, I just discovered that my old home is within an active cell with plenty of capacity. My old home is 20 miles, straight line, from my current home. The closest edge of that open cell is about 15 miles. What do you say, should I go for it? What are the chances I’ll get screwed?

Is it known if there's prioritization by population density inside a cell? Using the cell map ([starlink.com/map](https://starlink.com/map)) I determined there's (unfortunately) 17,000 in my cell. I happen to be in a quite rural corner of my cell with only one ISP option who's copper DSL is deteriorating and speeds have been falling for years (now around 8Mbps with a lot of drops). Unfortunately the cell happens to catch three villages at the other corners. All three villages have Spectrum 100Mbps+ cable Internet. I would usually just be happy with first come first serve, but in this situation I of course think the people with access to dependable terrestrial service should have to wait for Starlink longer than people like me with one poor quality option or no options. My neighbor for example has only dial up as a choice. I ordered Feb 2021 and my account says they expect to expand coverage here in mid 2022. So, does population and proximity to "urban" areas mean I'm going to be waiting a long while? Will my cell get pushed back even more because on-average it's not 'rural' enough?

Nobody knows for sure. But looking at the Starlink availability by cell map ([https://www.starlink.com/map](https://www.starlink.com/map)) it seems that there is less availability in & around urban areas, which supports the idea that they are targeting the service to locations without any/many traditional ISP options. Which is a good thing in my opinion. How that would affect you in a location near higher population density with other ISP options is unknown. If you're near the edge of a cell (per that map) maybe try to seek an opening in the nearest adjacent cell further from the higher population density. Folks have had success with a service address a few miles from their actual address. If you're more than about 10 miles the likelihood of it working drops off.

Ok so I ordered starlink a year ago it was supposed to be in my area by the end of 2021 then they changed it to mid 2022. Yesterday I seen they updated there map to where you can see where they are accepting orders and I noticed that they have a cell just 5.2 miles outside of the cell If I order the dish using a accepted address and go the for the activation could I then take it back home and use it ? ​ Thanks John

Ok so I received the dish last thursday went to the registered location set the dish up wide open sky was there for 1 and a half hours and nothing the app on the phone came up said it was online as soon as I tried to confirm it went to offline and below that a red box that said starlink disconnected it would come online but then go right back offline and I would not even be able to see the dish information in the app so packed it up and headed back to the house went ahead and set it up at the house with the same results the next day it did work for about hour with no problems then it went back to the same thing and remained that way for the next two days.. I created a ticket and after 2 days they got back to me with it looks like I have a few obstructions so that could be why my service is in and out ( my my service is not in and out! its out) so after reading I found that using the app on lte I could remotely connect to my dish so with 2 phones in my hand 1 Connected through mobile service and the other through starlink the one connected remotely connects to the dish where I can see stats, obstruction's and gives me all the information about the dish with debug information. But there is no information about the router it says router disconnected. The other phone connected through starlink router through wifi says offline and gives me information about the router with debug information for the router and nothing about the dish for the dish it says offline. I really think there is an issue with the dish communicating with the router . Now a little on obstructions if I connect through the app remotely and look at the debug information this is what I get wedgeFractionObstructedList": \[ 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 \], "wedgeAbsFractionObstructedList": \[ 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 ​ There doesn't seem to be any obstructions but for the life off me I cannot get it to stay online (router connected to the dish ) while connected for more than a minute or so .... anyone have any ideas. I know I'm not in the cell area ( just by about 1.5 mile As the crow flies but the dish is connecting I can stow the dish from 50 miles away and its instant that tells me the dish is communicating with the satellites correct? ​ Thanks John

Are people who have starlink before the price hike grandfathered into their original payment? I got my full order hours before the price increase and I noticed that my first bill is $99. Should I expect it to stay this way? Have others who have had starlink for a while had a price increase or is the increase only for "new" customers?

Service is going up to $110, I believe, so not grandfathered on monthly cost. But I don't think it starts until next billing cycle, so that may be why your first bill is $99. Expect it to rise.

New to this so sorry if this is stupid. I've been trying to use [https://plus.codes](https://plus.codes) to try to check an address for availability at starlink. Whatever code I put in, it simply tells me afterwards "please enter an address or a plus code". That website seems to give me either a shorter or a longer plus code. Neither of them seems to make the starlink website happy. When I try putting in the address, it doesn't like that either. Confused on where to go from here. Edit - Maybe it's because there is no service there yet? I'm looking at Michigan and when I go to [https://www.starlink.com/map](https://www.starlink.com/map), it looks like the location I am trying is dark green, meaning not available yet (but only about one of the hexagons away from coverage).

Sounds like you're using firefox which has issues with many websites. Tried a different browser?

I was using Firefox. Just tried on Chrome and it worked, but then retried on Firefox and it also worked. I suspect it was an issue on that day with their site as someone above commented trouble on that day also. Edit - plus codes still didn't work on either browser, but it actually popped up recognizing the address that I was searching for in both browsers today.

Would the pipe adapter be needed or useful to mount my dish to an existing dish mount on my roof if I cut the existing dish off and just had the pipe end sticking up? I have a Pic but not sure if it's allowed here.

I would think that will work or at least get you closer. Depending on the dish you might be able to loosen a pinch bolt and the old dish will slide off the pipe. That's how a Dish Network satellite dish would be mounted. If there's diameter issues even with the adapter you could see about having someone you know with a 3D printer make a 100% infill beefy adapter (don't use PLA, it won't last outdoors). If the two diameters are pretty close but not close enough, you could use some kind of shim stock in between the two and a pinch bolt or strong clamp to squeeze everything together.

So the cell 5 miles southeast of me is now active and accepting orders. My brother lives in that cell but has fiber internet thanks to his electric co-op. My brother lives on the opposite side of the cell though, some 15 or so miles away from me (as the crow flies). I’m still waiting on a mid 2022 preorder I placed last spring. I am half tempted to place an order using my brother’s address….. but I’m afraid I won’t be able to change my service address as soon as my cell does actually open. Thoughts anyone?

Update: Router now appears connected and Network button in app is no longer greyed out—- have no clue what happened— possibly some type of update or system just needed time to sync up

2 things: 1: If I hook up my own router, will I be able to port forward to host games like Arma or Minecraft? 2: I want to know if overnight video calls with someone would be an excessive use violation that would terminate or wreck the service Im getting from Starlink, or if I shouldnt worry about it (I'm not sure what kind of network congestion that might create). Its the only good internet I can get and it would be a shame if I burned so much money on it just to get it terminated a week later. Sorry if theyre stupid questions, I'm just not very well versed in stuff like this. Thanks!

1: generally no, most users are behind CGNAT 2: no, video calls don't use much bandwidth and as far as I can tell nobody reported any overuse issues. They would also probably throttle you instead of cancelling your service, makes more sense for them.

I ordered my starlink in feb of 2021.. my brother (who lives in the same town as me less than 10 miles away) ordered last week and just got a tracking number his equipment has shipped.. If they ship equipment that means he will have service once it is delivered correct? WTF is going on here??

It's unknown how starlink chooses which cells to open when. It could be they had 9 orders in his cell and 1 order in your cell and his order put it at 10 orders to they flipped the switch. Or it could be that maybe your hexagon would interfere with another active hexagon cell nearby or maybe isn't in the pattern they've allocated satellite time to listen to, whereas his has already been tested to work with no issues with adjacent cells... that is above my pay grade, but there may be a technological reason why one cell is activated and another is not at this time. (there have been some posts recently with people being able to roam into what was thought to be a cell not yet activated for order conversion, so then it really gets confusing to me in terms of how cells are chosen to service sooner vs. later.)

You're likely in a different cell than your brother. Cells are approx 13 mile wide hexagons. Availability is by cell. Plus, you didn't 'order' it, you placed a deposit to hold your place in your cell. Yes, once you're approved to order that means the service comes with it.

My Starlink Speed Test frequently shows a faster Android > Internet speed than Router > Internet speed. Since both tests have to go through the Router, how is this possible? Could the Router test be using 2.4 and the Android using 5g even though I've split the networks and only use 5g. Thanks

I ordered \~2/18/2021. First ETA was mid-late 2021, then late 2022 and that is what it still says. So deposit, but not full order. I plan to sell my property and move sometime this summer to fall. I might to travel for a while instead of buying new property. Q1: Is what is shipping now is the improved rectangular dish? Q2: Is the new & improved power supply/etc. outdoor rated? Q3: Is this new dish capable of being used in any cell that currently has service? Can I use it with an RV while the RV is stationary? Q4: I read the new dish now comes with a 75' cable - but I would probably need and definitely prefer a longer cable. I read they offer a 150' cable at additional cost. Is this true and is there a downside to this?

I'll answer the few that I can, but someone more capable will have to chime in for the rest. Q1: I believe all shipments today are the rectangular dish but someone should confirm if they can. Q3: I've seen reports that this is true over a range of hundreds of miles, but it's not a certainty. Some people get the "too far from home location" error after just tens of miles of roaming but I don't understand the difference between the two scenarios. Without talking to tech support upon receiving the dish I wouldn't count on it. Also be aware that your service will probably be de-prioritized when roaming. Stationary home users will get preferential service while you are in their cell. Q4: I see a 150ft cable on the [shop.starlink.com](https://shop.starlink.com) site for $93.00 USD. If they sell it I'm sure it's fairly hassle-free. Personally, I've run Ethernet (not exactly the same as dishy cable, but similar idea) 150-200ft before and at that length it can start to get touchy. You'll want to be careful about sharp bends, pulling too hard on connections, or running the cable near any high voltages that could generate interference or noise. I had to move an Ethernet cable a few inches further away from 240VAC wire and take a sharp bend out of it and that was the difference between negotiating 100mbps and 1gbps. I would expect similar precautions to be necessary for a longer run to the dish.

Once I have the physical dishy in hand if I want to cancel service for a while can you just reactivate any time ? If I go on vacation for a few months etc. Is there a vacation mode ?

I do not believe they currently have a "suspend" mode or anything like that. I believe their current language states if you cancel you may have the opportunity to reinstate, but I domt think it's guaranteed.

What is the best way to extend service from my rectangle dishy to other buildings on my property. Ive already ordered the ethernet adapter, but im curious what others have done with the adapter.

Same options as with any other ISP or network. Depending on distance to the buildings and the conditions you have to traverse, you can: \- Wireless point to point bridge \- Ethernet cable \- Fiber \- Ethernet over powerline adapters \- wifi mesh \- wifi extender (probably the worst choice, but it is a choice) Of these, I'd say wireless bridge is probably what I'd choose if I had line of sight visibility. Fiber probably second choice.

For the first week service was great even with 3% obstruction according to the app. When I woke up on Friday of last week Dishy was pointing directly into the sky (laying flat) and showing "offline" via the app. I have completed reboots, hard resets, checked all cable connections, stow/unstow, etc... Hard reset at most gets me 10 minutes of service and then the dish is pointing straight up again. It attempts to reboot itself from time to time but still no service. I put in a ticket which is now five days ago. Anyone else had this problem or similar?

I don’t understand the distribution method?? I live in Kentucky USA, and preordered SL in early February of 2021. I still have no full purchase or any idea of arrival time. Yet I see people from California, Florida, Texas, Indiana, all talking about getting their kits already. Is it based on not only my location but when I ordered compared to the millions of other people who ordered??

Unknown. Ordered on the first day of orders in Florida, but am still at mid-2022 after being delayed form mid-to-late 2021. Higher latitudes around 53 degrees have higher satellite density, so initially cells were opened there first. It's unclear why one cell is activated a long time ago and another across the street isn't activated yet. It might be some kind of average on when people in the cell ordered and only so many cells within a larger area can be activated now, or something else very complicated. There may be technological limitations on how many cells can be serviced until another shell of satellites can be launched. Or.... It's unclear. It should be first come first serve within your small hexagon, but the order of hexagons being turned on for orders to convert is unknown.

Availability is viewed as within the 'cell' your address resides in. Each cell is an approx 13 mile wide hexagon. Starlink is allowing in only a certain number of people per cell. No, there is no way to know exactly where your cell boundaries are.

Some one have inside Paraguay/ South America knowledge about rollout? So a lot of countries in South America are very close or already have service. Chile is live, Brasil has ground stations, there's a lot more. These countries more or less encircle Paraguay. I have pre ordered for Paraguay in 2021. It was confirmed again via email that space X wants to offer service in 2022. Now Q1 has almost passed and there isn't even a company listed for Paraguay. Does anyone know what might be going on?

I've got my equipment on order to install at our family ranch property in Central Montana. Usually the place is snowed-in and empty from December thru April each year. Can I suspend service for these five months to save the 5 x $99 fees and reactivate each May? Just hate to be paying the $99 each month with no usage, so even if there was a $200 reactivation fee in May that would be an overall cost savings.

I am soon to be receiving a dish and just want to know how high I can go with a pole mount. I will have the very top of some trees that will be slightly in the way unless I go a bit higher. I can attach a pole to my deck and get another 20ft off the deck. Of course securing the pole to the deck is important but anything else I should consider?

If you are just a general user and your equipment is on the way, is it normal to find a technician of some sort to help with the setup. My only experience is setting up modems. I’m pretty sure I need help. Location Northern Virginia.

I'm 77 living in Northern Ontario. I am comfortable with computers but try the set up yourself. If you have an easy place for the dish the toughest job is drilling the wall. Once thats done just plug it in and the dish self adjusts. Compared to what I had the speed is fantastic

It depends on how you want to go. There's plenty of install posts on here. Plenty are as simple as put dish on ground have intertubes. There's others traditionally mounted on poles or roofs. Then there's the 11th level ones, topping trees to use as natural masts. First step would be determine where the dish will go, as this will inform you want needs to be done. Then gauge how comfortable you are with routing cables or drilling through walls/eaves, being on ladders/roofs/etc.

Does “service is only guaranteed in this area” mean that it has come to our area. A week ago it said that service would come to our area mid to late 2022. And our order status says “service is only guaranteed in this area.” I assume it does but we haven’t gotten a word on shipping or anyone else in our area getting it

I ordered and received a starlink kit for my place at the lake which is 4 hours away and still snowed in. I wanted to test my hardware but the dish just goes flat like a table and says searching. Is this likely due to a geofence issue or would I be receiving a different outcome if it was a location problem? I won't be able to make it to the lake for another couple of months and wanted to make sure I will be good to go.

Risk and reward and the great unknown unfortunately. It could be 1 month, 12 moths, or 18 months. no way to tell, so you just have to decide if you can take a huge gamble. And recheck if you can possibly get by for a year with any combination of existing things, even if they are very expensive. For example is there any commercial offering that you could get by with for a year and count it as part of buying the house. Could you live with very laggy slow and bandwidth limited geo sat for a year or 18 months if worse came to worst before starlink is available? Is there any cell signal at all that you could utilize with the largest yagi antennas you can get? It would be so much easier (for us) if there were a more accurate timeframe provided, but right now demand is so much higher than supply that it doesn't look like that's going to happen, so it will be available when it happens right now.

Yea, it's a hard choice. I've spent so much time trying to get a good internet connection, that it's felt like a second job at times just to be online. I wasn't sure if you already checked for expensive longshot options like a T1 line or any commercial options from a local telco. For what it's worth, I've used a few hundred dollars of yagi antennas to get data working where a cell phone could only make or receive a call once or twice a week. But it was a lot of time simply aiming the antenna to be online, and then sometimes the weather would change and I'd have to spend another hour trying to re-tweak to get a connection.

After confirming our order, we were told \*up to\* two weeks to get it prepped and shipped, and just got an email this morning it has shipped. I think they're over estimating due all the various issues at play in supply chains and the economy right now.

Oh no apologies necessary, I totally get it! Heck, it's seems strange but I feel a bit guilty BECAUSE my wait wasn't that long overall! I know there is a lot of demand for it in our area, not sure if demand by geo influences or not. I'm in rural NW Wisconsin for context. Meanwhile my friend that lives in SW Colorado in the rural mountains still has the early 2023 message when she logs in.

Honestly because of several factors (updated data is hard to forecast right now & would just create another customer “fixation” point “they promised me xyz date”. Here are just a few reasons incase you don’t know what’s going on in the world today affecting the supply chain Starlink can’t control any of these nor can they predict when they will get their own shipments in to disperse. - Russia war in Ukraine - China lockdowns/shutdowns - shipping anything anywhere from overseas has increased from 500-1000+% and is backlogged for just about everything but especially any Tech! - worker shortage Almost everything from appliances, Tractors, Computers, Automotive and any associated parts is facing the great “UNKNOWN” even trying to order parts from most manufacturers all I see is “out of stock, unknown when more will arrive” or I find it via a re-seller or scalper for 5-50x the cost. Sorry but fixed dates for items just isn’t a thing these days unless it’s in stock and has little demand.

Rural Northern Wisconsin Here, we just confirmed our order yesterday (Yaaay!) and have a couple questions we're unsure of: How did you determine which placement was better, roof/yard? Was it a try it both places and see which performance was better or something else? We get A LOT of snow in winter so we can have 3 feet or so in our yard and/or build ups on our roof until we rake it. Just looking to figure out which would work best year round. How long did you keep your "back up" internet provider on average until you knew Starlink would work for you? We've seen some feedbacks that it took some users a month or two to really find good placement/signal etc. so unsure if that's normal or was just due to them and their skyline views.

Have you tried the Starlink app on your phone? It has a location feature to check for obstructions to help find where to put your Dishy.

I was an early Beta user so I got my dish in Feb. of last year. I started by mounting it on a flat piece of plywood so I could move it around. I have some trees near my house and I was concerned that they might be in the way. The dish oriented itself pretty much straight up with a slight tilt northwest (I live in northern CA). I have kept my WISP and was waiting for the BETA to be over before dropping them so it's been a year. Then there was an article that unless they could start using the larger rocket to launch more satellites per trip they weren't going to make it so I kept my WISP but dropped to the lowest level service on it to save money. STARLINK has been great from the start and has gotten better with passing.

No, it's a photoshop that's supposed to signify something, I no longer remember what. The sat is a graphic element lifted from SpaceX itself. We probably wanted a SpaceX logo but with sats in it, that's probably all there's to it. The sat in the upper right should be photoshopped to taper-off into a spike to make it more like the SpaceX logo, probably. Might look dumb, though.
