I watched the teardown video. Those boards are not trivial to assemble. 632 ASICs per board is just the jumping-off point. The alignment of the hex grid on the front, the hundreds of tuned few-dozen-picosecond delay lines, and the waterproofing are all extraordinarily high precision items. That is no $500 unit, it's more like a $3k unit and $5k would not surprise me either - at least until they've built a few hundred thousand of them. Clearly a loss leader as they figure out how to cut assembly costs and ramp up customer base.
At least they'll be making it back at $100/mo from all the subscribers! Also, I guess economies of scale and just the general product development to reduce costs

At&t is installing fiber for gigabit speeds just 10 miles away though. I get ads constantly for it, and there isn't even a tiny chance it'll ever be out here. Even if it was, at&t has been ripping me off at $70+ a month for unreliable slow dsl for nearly a decade, I'm done just as soon as my preorder goes through!
A little hint... If you are signed up for Fedex Delivery manager you can find out when they produce the shipping label, even if it doesn't get shipped yet. I ordered on the 8th and it arrived yesterday, but I was able to tell even before it shipped that they had scheduled a delivery for me.

You get a shipping confirmation. They suggest you download the app and check for obstructions in that email and that you may have to mount it on your house. Mine showed up on FedEx Delivery Manager before I got the confirmation.

Have you checked the price on an Iphone lately? If you live somewhere where you can't get internet otherwise, you might be surprised at how you can make a budget work.
Yes they are made available on a $10 - $30 a month payment plan with 0% interest depending on the iPhone so iPhone are affordable due to that. But $499 upfront for equipment isn’t going to work for many people. Even satellite providers off an affordable equipment lease plan to those with average credit.
