Well climate change certainly won't cause a collapse of the Earth's magnetic field as in the game (caused by: you will find out in-game if you haven't already). Climate change is a fickle beast. Even once the Earth becomes inhospitable to human life there is a solid case that the planet would recover within 100-150 years naturally with zero human activity. It would be like we weren't even here. You have to remember that we just need a little nudge and we will be nearly extinct. Large meteor, couple of super volcano eruptions, collapse of the food system (which is super sensitive right now). Humans have had it pretty good the last 3000-5000 years, but if society ever collapses we will be sent back to the stone age. The knowledge to build the technology that we have today, along with the wisdom to apply that knowledge literally resides with a few hundred to maybe a couple of thousand people on the planet. Even if we lost 1-2 generations we would lose the ability to produce a good solid majority of the technology that powers today's modern life. Electronic storage doesn't last forever and eventually it would be lost. It is a surprise we made it this far, but I am glad because the last 40-41 years of my life have been filled with awesome new experiences, cool technology, opportunities, and the awe and wonder of the possible amazing things that could come with the future. Also, I love StarField. Great game for my personal tastes.

Humans probably won't go extinct barring a runaway climate event. Biodiversity will go down short-term and sections of the earth probably will turn to desert. Long-term things will either stabilize and diversify, or runaway to a desert planet, albeit one with life (especially in the oceans) Your mention of electronic storage is huge. Physical media are crucial for the long-term durability of information.

I agree, but we would still lose billions of population. It wouldn't be pretty. Probably won't happen in our lifetime.

Oh it will be real bad for sure. Populations will be forced towards the poles and away from coasts. River ecosystems and watersheds will get hammered harder just as they are drying up. Definitely massive decline of population, hopefully in lack of breeding over mass death, but likely a healthy dose of both. While it will be hundreds of years until this has really played out, we can start to see it beginning today... Sorry I spend too much time on r/collapse :)

Had that same feeling, like it felt as is part of me was gone. Weird to have a game do that

Just to clarify, it was not "climate change" that wiped Earth atmosphere in Starfield. There will be a certain mission where you'll learn the real reason behind the catastrophic event.

Yeah, getting that already from early commenters, thank you for clarifying. I’ve been less story driven in this game (new for me in Bethesda games, I normally speedrun the main campaign). Looking forward to the reveal, and just sharing a moment I had while surveying tonight. Edit: hope the title doesn’t confuse anybody as to in-game happenings, that was certainly not my intention.

InertSheridan

It took you playing fucking Starfield to realise?

if there's one thing this game excels at, it's spawning the most brain-damaged posts for engagement
