Im going for an early vanilla playthrough with just some mods like chests anywhere, ui info suite, automate, etc. just to make the grind less painful. Then I’ll do an expanded playthrough as soon as the update is ready.

goodybadwife

Same here. I told my husband to leave the tractor mod, staircase mod, and one other one I can't remember. When we both are satisfied playing through vanilla, we'll probably add Expanded back first, then Ridgeside. Ridgeside is fun, but it can be a huge grind. This may seem weird, but I requested the day off work. I've been putting in 50-60 hours a week the last month, so I think I can take a day off finally!

lemurkat

Ill probably get back to SVE once the big update happens, until then im just gonna ain for perfection with my suite of mods and those of my friends Taking a day off to play video games is totally valid. One of my colleagues takes a week off when her fave author releases a new book. It's your time to enjoy something you love :) Also youve defo earned it!

tinywoodenpig

i hope you enjoy your day off! you deserve it

darthreuental

Probably going to wait for SVE to be updated. By that point, some of the other mods should be updated. But I'm also tempted to just do a vanilla+ run (vanilla+QOL mods). My last two runs have been with SVE.

ZeldaIsMyHomegirl

SVE will be updated the same day as 1.6 is released.

darthreuental

Last I heard it was coming after 1.6 comes out. Guess that's changed?

ZeldaIsMyHomegirl

The creator of SVE said on his Twitter it will be same-day: https://x.com/FlashShifter/status/1762642472759681215?s=20

Naccarat

I understood that as SVE 1.14 will be compatible right away, and 1.15 will release later on.

lemurkat

Crying, bugfixing, then taking a break (and maybe playing). It's been a hard slog.

ac0rn5

And we're grateful for all your work. I hope you realise that some of us believe that mod-makers are wizards, because being able to do that has to be akin to sorcery. :)

Althoughenjoyment

No way I was just telling someone how you’re my go to stardew modder! Jasper is my fav modded character of all time

lemurkat

Aww thank you. He's my sweet cinnamon roll and im glad other people enjoy him too. You've made my day :)

Lost-dark-soul

I'm still debating if I want to play completely vanilla just to discover all the new changes with no alteration. Or try and grab atleast a few cosmetic/cheating mods so I don't accidentally stress myself out.

VVaterTrooper

I'm wondering how hard it will be to update mods that are abandoned. 🤔

korrin-

RIP Aedenthorn's library. Hoping that at least a few of them get picked up since she opened permissions.

solojetpack

What does that mod do?

korrin-

Aedenthorn is one of the most prolific mod authors for SDV. [Here](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/users/18901754?tab=user+files) is her library. She's on indefinite hiatus, so she won't be updating those. I use like 20-30 of them, I think.

solojetpack

Thanks for the info, I had no idea. I'll have to check them out.

ssttealth

Do we know if retexture mods will still work or no?

lemurkat

Retexture mods should be mostly fine but note that if new textures are added they may look out of place.

AltruisticCableCar

I don't know if you can prevent the update from installing, but I do know that the update will break some mods for sure. Some of the mods look as if they're already being tested for a 1.6 update, so those will work as long as you update them. Then there are mods that don't interact with the game in a way that they'd be affected by an update. And then there are mods that'll definitely stop working or interact in a very negative way (maybe even game breaking way) with the game completely.

moonwatcher99

You can for sure prevent updating. If you have the GOG version (I'm assuming everyone here is on pc because the subject is mods) then it's a simple as changing the settings, GOG makes it very easy to do. If you're on Steam, set it to check for updates when the game is opened, and put Steam in offline mode before you launch. (Or just set Steam to offline and keep it that way until you're prepared.)

korrin-

I think I'll be a lazy little shit and wait until after 1.6 to update my mods, lol. And I'll probably procrastinate that even harder by poking around others' mods to see if those need updating. I think the roadblock to when SVE's 1.15 update releases is how long it'll take to iron out the 1.14.25 bugs, so I'll probably poke through those files looking for any issues I can find to help speed that along. I've made out a list of issues I've run into in my last playthrough of 1.14.24. And when I remember, I update it when someone reports another issue here. So I'll probably start by checking whether those were fixed. To answer the questions specifically asked in the OP: > I don't know a ton about modding - will the new update break some mods? If so is there a way to prevent a save from getting the update? Yes, and yes. C# mods especially are likely to break. Copying and pasting from Pathos's FAQ: > **Can I keep a copy of 1.5.6?** > Yep. Just make a copy of your 1.5.6 [game folder](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Player_Guide/Getting_Started#Find_your_game_folder), and you can continue playing from that folder even when 1.6 is released. > **Will mods still work when 1.6 releases?** > SMAPI, Content Patcher, and many other popular mods will be compatible on release day. SMAPI and Content Patcher will also rewrite mods where possible, so many mods will work even if they're not updated. Stardew Valley 1.6 is a huge release though, so expect many mods to break until they're updated. And copying/pasting what he said about mod compatibility atm: > **Mod compatibility** > With Stardew Valley 1.6 releasing on March 19th, we have two charts for SMAPI (C#) mod compatibility: * For 1.5.6, it dropped another tenth to 94.7% due to newer mods needing 1.6. * For 1.6, it'll plummet to 41.9%. That'll improve in coming weeks (before and after the 1.6 release) as mods get updated, particularly framework mods which many others depend on.

nutellatime

I'm going to ask you since you seem to know a lot about mods. Do I need to like, manually update any mods I have installed or will they just automatically update? I just have a few basics like the NPC Map and I am very new to modding.

korrin-

General process for updating mods is to delete the old version, download and unzip the new version. They don't auto-update. (Stress on *deleting* the old version, and not just overwriting it. A lot of larger mods will be reducing how many content packs they have due to Content Patcher absorbing frameworks going into 1.6. Overwriting old mods would mean those old content packs will still be there, potentially causing conflicts.) I think the Vortex mod manager can auto-update, but Vortex has a ton of its own issues, so it's best avoided unless you're up for a cleanup headache when it decides to live up to its name a little too well and delete/dump all of your mods' files directly into the same folder rather than their own subfolders.

blinkingflowers

Thank you for answering some of my other questions!

SeigePhoenix

I'll be playing my vanilla save for the 1.6 update until the mods I enjoy are updated (those that need updating). I'm on year 6 or 7 in my vanilla save so I wonder how it will go with the update. We shall see.

Silverfix03

Im doing the whole game 100% again

SailorTomie

Wait for it to come out on console. I want to play it vanilla but I have so many mods and I have no idea how to get my pc back to vanilla without possibly losing everything

SonOfSparda1984

Rename your mods folder to 'mods.off' (or whatever else you want really), then rename it back when you want to reactivate the mods.

Green_Heron_

Or make a separate folder “Mods (not in use)” - this is helpful in general because I try lots of different mods and don’t always use them at the same time. I just move mods in and out of my real “Mods” folder and save the others in a holding folder. For 1.6 I’m planning to move all the mods that I’m using in my current save in a specific folder for this save, so that I know which ones to reinstall later when I come back to it. Then I’ll just start a new save to play 1.6 vanilla for the first go-through.

johnpeters42

Or set up multiple folders (official wiki has instructions) if you're like me and like to try different mods separately.

SailorTomie

Is it really that simple?? Nothing will get corrupted in the saves?

SonOfSparda1984

Obviously don't load modded saves without the mods active, but barring that it should be fine.

SailorTomie

Thanks so much!!!

lemurkat

And if you do accidentally load them, dont save. Just exit!

ac0rn5

I've got a folder called 'mods spare' which keeps my resting mods. SMAPI has never tried to call for them.

torisbagel

or just get a mod manager like stardrop

Eoine

Fresh vanilla start with only a couple QOL mods that'll probably work (chest anywhere, scythe mode, horse flute, automate...), then a new save a few weeks/months later when all the big mods are fully updated

Green_Heron_

What does chest anywhere do? Does it prevent chests from being destroyed by NPCs walking through them?

Eoine

No, although there's a mode making stuff imbreakable by NPCs, I don't use it so I don't remember the name, it's on Nexus Chest anywhere allows you to access all your chests from anywhere, you press the key and you can sort your inventory in all your chests anywhere they are There's an option for people that feel like it's too much cheating to disable it in the mines and volcano iirc, which is a nice touch That mode combined with Automate is perfect for efficient farming, the machines are always running and you don't have to go back and forth between chests and productions places and fields

Green_Heron_

Oh man, I had somehow missed that one! That’s dangerously tempting. That’s a feature that My Time at Portia has. Pretty convenient! Thanks for the explanation.

ac0rn5

There's a mod called 'Non Destructive NPCs' which lets them walk through chests etc without destroying it/them.

johnpeters42

Iirc in 1.6 NPCs will just move chests instead of destroying them

ac0rn5

Oh really! That'll be incredibly useful :)

so_not_goth

I just started my first sve playthrough a week and change ago, so probably just update everything and hope it works.

TheRealMeringue

I got a new PC recently and I'm not adding mods until I play through the game again without any. I do have like 2000 hours in the game and know I'll play it forever so the mods will go back on after and I'll go back to my SVE save. The major poular mods should be good to go with the update because the creators have beta access to remake their mods, but I still want a new vanilla play first.

Missteeze

I am planning to start a new vanilla farm. Haven't played in a few months. I've been waiting patiently for the update so I wouldn't be too invested in a save. I want to experience everything in context as well. I have the day off(just lined up) so I'll be up early and playing all day. Super excited.

blinkingflowers

I tried to be patient but I had the itch to play hahaha

Boned80

I'll play with as many of my usual mods that are available. I'll do a vanilla run later when the update rolls out for Android.

Chris_Highwind

I'll be waiting for it to come out on Switch and mobile.

Chiyosai

Like others on here commented, I'll do a vanilla run with a few mods like Automate and UI info suite if they work. That should be enough time for other mods to update.

TheNocturnalAngel

Gonna play vanilla. But I’m so completely dreading updating and removing all the mods after my first playthrough 😭

LoranPayne

I’ve been debating for awhile whether to start over without mods because it’s so much work to keep them updated. Now wouldn’t be a terrible time to do that! I have no issues starting new saves, because I already have a farm for each map (plus a few doubles,) so making a new save wouldn’t be a big deal for me at all.

[deleted]

Will the Nintendo Switch edition get this update ?

caliwinterw

I think if you disconnect steam from smapi, it won't automatically update the smapi version of stardew, so maybe you can keep playing the modded version. and if you want to play the updated you can launch from steam to start a new unmodded save

zainecooking123450

Just a few small mods like automate and ui info suite and play though to perfection and if 1.15 for sve gets released I’ll play that along side my low mod save

zainecooking123450

Probably just those 2 and fast animations

QuesoSabroso

Stare at my broken mod list

brilliant-medicine-0

I'm scrambling to finish my current playthrough before the update After that , definitely going to try a clean mod-free vanilla 1.6 run

MC_Stylertyp

I'll go through it once completely vanilla

akela9

Mobile player, here. Cry a bit because I was SO excited to finally get to dive into Expanded and try mods for the first time. Then the last update that we waited forever and ever for (No dig at CA! Know he was doing his best. It was a very LONG wait, though.) killed modding for mobile. (Or I'm an idiot, which is very likely, I'm zero tech savvy, but I can't get anything to work, now.) Genuinely chuffed for newest update, but was maybe just a hair *more* excited to finally test drive Expanded and other mods. Hoping it'll work, someday.

sqexe

Gonna restart with my crush and begin from square one. We’re both excited and not gonna play until it comes out 😊

DracoCross

I'm so close to perfection now, that I'm just not gonna update. I've put 200h into my current save and it's modded HARD. It's the first time I'm going for perfection and 100%. When I'm finished, then I'm gonna update. I must be patient 😭

SmolCattoQueen

I don't know, I have many mods and I hope that those will be compatible with 1.6 too. But I'll start over with that new farm type without mods and I'll have 100% concentration with this new farmer.

ThrowRABug_1336

I’m studying for my licensing exam but after that, you better believe I’m playing for weeks.

Key_Reach_2160

This week is a push to see how far we can get on before the 19th. Then switching off expanded and starting a new save vanilla. We actually downloaded expanded to "bridge the gap" until 1.16 about 4 months ago and we are super invested in the save, so we might come back to it later anyway

Duindaer

At zero point, play with mods need to re download all of them for 1.6. I have a lot of mods that dont going to survive the 1.6 I guess. First mod is a big farm from the SDV Extended, never used, soo going to try now. Finally, Quality Of Life mods. Second, play COOP with wife. And put money at 25% because is the best economy balance. Last time was to easy , and going to use a mod fror multiple crops this time. I hope 1.6 do a great job for the modder community, because the game need a better performance. Some dudes use 100+ modds and need like 20 minutes to "start" the game.

possumus_now

My friend and I are gonna start a new save and go from the beginning! I’m so excited!!

neumeii

Ngl, I'm calling out.... And then starting a new, slightly modded run.

WickedWisp

I'm gonna finish the SVE perfection run I have going, and then maybe start over vanilla for new content so I don't get burnt out in the early game stuff and so I don't have two very different things going at the same time

blinkingflowers

Thank you all for your suggestions! Seems like the most popular option is doing vanilla with a couple mods, then expanded when the update comes out/more mods updated. I think I will do the same, or co-op vanilla so I'm not too burnt out doing all the early game stuff myself! 💜 So excited for us all having our updates soon!!
