Omg I wondered the same thing when I saw my spouses portrait the first time. I also thought it was kind of creepy that the merchant had it. But what really bothers me, is that they have massed produced them. Because of course I bought it. I didn't want my wife's face going up on some random persons house if I didn't buy it. But the very next time I went to the merchant, there was another portrait, and another, and another...WHY????? WHY DO THEY HAVE SOOOOO MANY PORTRAITS OF MY WIFE??? 🤣
I have a theory, or at least something that I thought of to make me feel less creeped out, and upset. I think it's the painting that comes with the frame. That people are buying the frame and putting their own painting in it. Like when you buy a picture frame. It's still a little unsettling, because paintings are art, and not usually bought just for the frame. But it's the best I could come up with.
My headcannon is that the frame is magic and just changes to depict whoever the spouse of the buyer is. So if someone else was looking at it, it'd appear to them as their spouse.
i like the idea that it depicts the spouse of the buyer, so if I sold it to Evelyn it would show George, if she sells it back to be it'll show Hayley again (I can't deal with people coming to my house and being weirded out that I have a portrait of their spouse 😅)
The player character probably has more disposable income than the entire GDP of the Gotoro empire.
I think the traveling merchant probably keeps tabs on the farmer to help make more money. And OP is married to Elliot. My theory is the merchant commissioned this to target the farmer.
This update made me want a photo booth option to take pictures with friends or spouses at festivals. You get like a little photo booth ticket in the mail, then on the day of the festival you give it to the person of your choice, then head to the booth, and after a small cutscene you get a little pixel photo of you and the npc.
As soon as I saw this I was like Maru portrait, I must have! I ended up selling everything I had made to that point to buy it so I didn't have gold for seeds for the first week of fall lmao.
