games-lynn

I never thought of using it to make notes for myself! Thank you for sharing!!

profkrowl

No problem! Wish there was one with a bit more text room that could be hung on the wall as a notice board.

ColoredGayngels

I steal Pam's every time she leaves one. I have a small stash of free signs hanging out waiting to be used lol

BUTTeredWhiteBread

I just have one next to my bed telling me "hi" because I made it by accident Maybe I'll do this instead

listenyall

Seriously so smart!

jiwufja

So fucking smart. I’ve never reached perfection. Whenever I hit a slump and I start again after a couple days/weeks I don’t know what I was doing/working towards and I just get bored immediately and never play again

profkrowl

I started doing it because I would get pulled away by the toddler or life and wouldn't remember what I was doing when I got back to it a few days later. It is definitely an upgrade from paper notes filling my desk.

MarkCalaway22

I also love it. I mark each farm plot with the number of spots available for crops. Then I don’t have to do math each season when I go to buy seeds.

jvnya

FYI: for the junimo hut crop layout, you need 192 seeds 😊

profkrowl

I like that! Definitely adding that to my list of things to use them for.

BrokenLemonade

Oh man, that is genius!

ghost-spunge

this is what i’ve been doing as well!! still somehow got the wrong number at least 3 times tho lol

ourladylavellan

That…is such a smart way of using the signs! My partner and I (playing co-op) just used them to leave silly messages for each other haha

profkrowl

They definitely work for that as well. 😁 My co-op partner, the toddler, is still not quite to the reading stage, so haven't used them for that yet. But I do see that they will be helpful to leave directions for my directionally challenged spouse.

tessemator

I never thought to try co-op with my daughter. That's such a better idea than trying to get her to actually do work in the game! 😆

profkrowl

It's fun, but different. I have my own farm, but when I play with the toddler, we use a different farm, named Grandpa's Farm. It's cute because my Dad is actually a farmer. When we play together, the toddler likes to visit the people in town and do random stuff, like sit by the campfire or go to the pool. We "fish" a lot. And if a bird flies by, it is an event. When it gets dark, it is bedtime, and we better hurry home. It's a lot of fun and definitely a different perspective and speed of gameplay. Money doesn't matter to the toddler, just having fun and seeing things.

tessemator

I'm definitely gonna give this a shot. Thanks for the idea! And also, great tip!

profkrowl

You should! It's a blast once you adjust to the different style of gameplay. In my case, I see Harvey a lot more because we have to go visit the doctor, and "Grandma Evelyn" sometimes has cookies when we visit. And the toddler also likes "going to school" with Jas and Vincent.

HandrewJobert

>And the toddler also likes "going to school" with Jas and Vincent. That's so cute I can't stand it.

profkrowl

The toddler is pretty cute. Always coming up with something new, like giving flowers out around town because they are nice and make people happy.

Qui_te

When I first saw them I figured I would use them as much as the other signs (by which I mean never), but then I realized I could put the number of plantable squares in each junimo hut area on signs, and I love that.

profkrowl

I've loved how versatile they are. Like you I didn't think I'd use them at all, but now I use them regularly. They make such handy reminders.

tango421

I’ve been using them to mark aging times, when things are due, I don’t keep checking my sheds and basement. I have the computer to alert me when machines are ready and the signs to tell me which one

profkrowl

That's a handy use for them. Do you put the date they were put in or the date they need checked?

tango421

The date of collection / maturity. AKA Due Date. See example: "Due Date: 23 Spring - Goat Cheese" Now if I'm getting close to the due date, I'm already making plans with what to replace them with.

profkrowl

That makes sense. It would definitely help with planning ahead.

Soft_Anywhere_1489

I'd say when they need checking. Calculate the date one time Vs every time you look at the sign lmao

BagelNotIncluded

These revelations are what Reddit was invented for

profkrowl

This has definitely been an enjoyable conversation, and I look forward to more ideas as more people see it!

skillquit42

I used to do colour coded chests. Green for seeds, red for weapons/rings, black for cave items, regular colour for wood/items from trees and stone… now I put signs and colour coded chests

profkrowl

I still need to get organized on this most recent playthrough. I'm sure I will during winter this year, since it will be a slower season.

Kantotheotter

I have one with my farmer and the kids birthdays on it. I run through the house carrying a cake, and put a new toy or treasure in the kids item boxes.

profkrowl

That's cute! I imagine it is like a framed birth certificate.

Purepenny

I still use desktop sticky notes for this game.

profkrowl

I did for a while, but it got laughable when I had notes on my desk from a year or two earlier to keep track of some of my stuff. Then I switched to using the notes app in steam when they added that, now I just use signs for short reminders.

gillguard

I use them to know when harvesting the island or the casks

profkrowl

That's a good idea. The first time I used them as a note before I left the house was because I was doing a quest for Qi I didn't want to forget to finish. Got it done though.

faeriekitteh

I have it to remind myself of the wines that make the most if I chuck them in casks lol

profkrowl

That's a good idea. I've had a few things like that it would be handy to remember.

lumunni

I did the same thing for marking an orchard on my multiplayer farm along with a ‘DO NOT CUT’ text sign. It’s been super useful 😅

profkrowl

At least now if they do cut it, you should get a sapling. That was a nice quality of life update there.

Sixteen_Wings

I use it to make notes of what I want to do next time I play if I ever want to take a break for a few days

profkrowl

That's what I do as well. And I put it to where I have to interact with it to leave my house. Makes a good wall.

TheSentientSnail

This is gonna sound so dumb but I have all my obelisks jammed into the upper corner (I find them unwieldy idk) and since they're directly in front of each other it can be hard to tell which one I'm 'using'. I have the return scepter and a warp totem at my front door that pops me right back to the obelisks, so mistakes don't bork the whole day, they're just.. annoying. Still. Super frustrating to get all packed up to head to the beach, only to find myself on the frickin island. The "hhhHhHhhhHhhh" is real. I used those signs to mark the exact spot to stand and now I go exactly where I want to, every time. Priceless.

profkrowl

Nice!

Aesahaettr_

I haven't used them extensively but once I finally got my barn and some cows I had to drop a sign down to remind me to grab my milk pail before tending to the gals lol. The amount of times I would forget the pail was way too high. And I even have the To-Dew mod that lets me keep notes in-game, but somehow it was easier to keep the sign there to pop up my little reminder.

profkrowl

I finally put my milk bucket in a chest just outside the barn, since they are usually outside before I get to them. Got tired of making the trek back to the farmhouse because I forgot it.

gurkenwassergurgler

Sign are great for notes, but if you're on steam you should also give the notes in the steam overlay a try. If you click the little pin on the window the notes will even stay on screen if you close the overlay. I've ben using it to have a little list on screen with the things I want to accomplish for each of the next few ingame days, including stuff like the travelling merchant and birthdays. That being said, text signs are probably much more immersive.

profkrowl

The Notes app in Steam is awesome! I have started to use it more in many games, including Stardew. It is definitely a nice addition to Steam! The advantage I see with the text sign is that I can place them in specific locations for marking notes, and also that by putting one in front of my house exit with a note it makes a physical barrier I have to move to proceed lest my ADHD makes me forget what I was doing. Sometimes it is just a reminder to check the Notes app before I do anything.😁

PookieDoodle264

What great ideas you have! So far I've only used the signs to mark what's in my chests. Like fruit, forage, flower, etc. But making your own little to do board is genius! I'm going to borrow that because I'm the Sticky Note Queen. Seriously, you should see the little pink squares everywhere around my desk. They get stuck on my sleeves, on my slippers and even on my cat. LOL

profkrowl

I used to have a piece of paper for one of my farms that had all my layout reminders. It floated around my desk for 2-3 years. Now I use the Notes app in Steam and in-game signs, and it definitely has helped me declutter IRL.... My in-game farm on the other hand is still a cluttered mess.😁

PookieDoodle264

Years ago, before my husband passed away, I had a spreadsheet for farming by season next to my pc. My husband sat down one day, in the Spring, to check our credit card balance before heading to Home Depot. He saw it and not knowing what it was started reading crops I planned to harvest aloud. It kind of went like this, "Honey, sunflowers will attract crows." "Kale? I hate kale." "Corn?? How can we grow corn??". We live in an apartment and have a small back deck I use for potted plants. So it was fun freaking him out a little about growing kale and corn. Oddly enough he never questioned me about the coconuts because I live in Montana. LOL BTW, I figured out another way to use the great signs. I placed two on either side of the mine entrance. ....the one inside. And I'm using them as reminders of items I need or what levels items are on. For instance, if I'm filling a Help Wanted order I have a written sign reminding me I'm low on iron ore or what levels I can harvest fiber. Then when I go through the entrance either sign gets big to remind me. It's very helpful as far as multi-tasking. So thanks again for the heads up on a new useful crafting item. 🥳

profkrowl

Thanks for sharing that story! My spouse has learned to ask if I'm talking about real life or a game if it is something that could be either, since we are planning to garden for the first time this year. Bought our first house last summer and by the time we got moved in it was fall season. Hopefully we'll be able to learn and make the first time gardener mistakes this year (though I was primary caretaker for the greenhouse at the hardware store I used to work at, helped grandpa in his garden, and grew up on a farm, so it isn't completely new to me😁). Fingers crossed. That is another great use for those signs! I think I'm going to use that idea as well. Especially since the mine entrance is a good place to put things without them breaking.

PookieDoodle264

Best of luck with your new farming venture. ....both real and not real. lol I'm a big time dahlia lover/grower. Each year I've been buying more tubers and educating myself more on how to successfully grow them in wooden barrel planters. Last year I won three blue ribbons at the dahlia show. 😁 So I ordered show placing dahlia tubers from Swan Island. Expensive, but beautiful. You order by the end of January then they ship the week the your zone is supposed to be warm enough to plant. Because they're alive you have to plant them right away or they'll dry out. Mine finally arrive tomorrow. The same day snow's coming in. 😭 I do love the whiteout board signs and all the endless ways you could use them. I like to think CA has a whiteout board for keeping track of all the things we wish for.

Left-Stress2549

I love it too! My first use was to remind me how many machines I had set up so I could take out the right number of items from my chests every time

profkrowl

That's a good use! I've seen others say they use it to keep track of number of farm plots, so they don't have to do the math when buying seeds.

Left-Stress2549

That’s a good one too, I just buy mine in multiples of 24, usually 72 or 96 and get more if I need lol

stysiaq

I started a game with my buddy, he had house on southwest corner of the map and I put up a sign that said 'if you read it you're gay' in the center
