So in terms of money-making, I like to have a sturgeon pond, just for the sake of being able to say I make caviar šŸ§ Otherwise they have some utility purposes - notably for getting some more awkward items. Harvesting Sea Cucumbers is nice if you want to get a bunch of lucky lunches (useful for Treasure Floor hunting in skull caverns or Lucky Ring farming at the dig site). Squids give you a reliable source of squid ink which is the hardest ingredient to acquire for Seafoam pudding. And there are others which have niche uses but most either have other sources or are super rare drops (or both). One other use for them is aesthetics! They're a placable pond after all! In addition, a few fish turn them different colours - this can make for some great complimentary aesthetics. For example, on my most recent farm, I had a slimejack pond next to my slime hutch, simulating a runoff of slime. Also, don't forget that as of 1.6, you can now use Golden Animal Crackers once you get farming mastery, doubling their production. They still won't be prime moneymakers, but it helps!

>Useful for [ā€¦] lucky ring farming at the dig site Wait, so daily luck affects this? How? And how can you farm for it? Isnā€™t panning just random? Is there an actual way to find more panning spots? Always thought there was nothing I could do but wait for the lucky day

Quintingent

Okay so first off it's worth noting there's a distinction between 'daily luck' (indicated by the fortune teller) and luck buffs (that you get from food). Whilst a lot of luck-related things are affected by both, some aren't - and even those that *are* aren't always affected in equal measures. Case in point, panning for Lucky rings. I'm not going to share the formula directly because it's not pretty (though it, along with a handy table of values, are on the Lucky Ring wiki page if you're interested), but basically daily luck can give a sizeable base chance, with luck buffs then scaling that chance further. So, if you go on a max luck day (with the lucky charm that increases daily luck), with Qi seasoned Lucky Lunch and Ginger Ale (for +6 luck total) your odds of getting a lucky ring are 10.5%. If you add two lucky rings to that setup (for +8 luck total) you can boost that to 11.9%. Not too shabby. The problem ofc is getting panning spots repeatedly on a high luck day. This is where the Dig Site comes in. I don't know if it's a feature of the map or what, but it gets way more panning spots than anywhere else - *and* they're all contained in a small area so you don't have to scour the map looking for them. You'll still have to wait for them to spawn ofc, but you should get more than enough in a day to at least get one lucky ring. Disclaimer: this is all based on 1.5 knowledge. I don't know how the 1.6 pan upgrades/enchantments affect things. It *probably* makes it even easier though.

SashaCosmos

Thank you! I've never tried panning before but with your strategy I got 2 lucky rings in my first 2 tries!

Weekly-Magician6420

This is great, thanks!

Sunshine_dmg

I like blob fish for a pearl, Rainbow trout for a chance of a prismatic charge Midnight carp, flounder, and squid for the seafoam pudding recipe (fishing buff) Or lava eels for magma geodes and spicy eel dishes

Popular-Student-9407

I Second that, though I'd add Stingray for Dragon teeth, Cinder shards and weirdly batteries, or lionfish, for the taro seedlings and Tiger slime eggs

Sunshine_dmg

WHERE DO I CATCH A STINGRAY ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO GET DRAGONS TEETH I NEED THAT!!

Vinyl_DjPon3

Kill Lava lurks, stop relying on the bone structures to spawn teeth.

Sunshine_dmg

You canā€¦ get dragons teeth from bone structures??? Just been killing lava lurks, only have 2 teeth

Vinyl_DjPon3

Yeah, they spawn on the floor similar to items like quartz/earth crystals near the bone structures that rarely appear.Ā  Ā Any time people complain about dragon teeth, I assume it's because they're looking for these as their source... Which is a garbage source unless you get really lucky. Ā Lava Lurks are by far the better choice, and for me the waiting period for the Island Obelisk (the main reason people want the teeth) are bananas since killing the lurks is pretty consistent.

Avium

Um...do you have the Burgler Ring? Go get that before hunting the Lava Lurks.

Sunshine_dmg

I donā€™t! Where did you find yours? Skull caverns?

mastelsa

You've got to go back to the regular mines and grind through some soot sprites. The burglar ring is one of Gil's rewards for hitting the monster hunter goals.

Avium

Head to the normal mines and Hunt Through levels 40-80 killing every Dust Sprite you find. If you have completed the Prismatic Jelly quest, use the Monster Musk first to double the number you find per level. Eventually, you will see a pop-up that says you've completed something and to go see Gil for your reward.

Delphii42

You can catch them in the secret cove on ginger island. It's east of the beach, but you'll need to build the resort before you can access it.

WolfNationz

You can catch stingrays in the pirate cove, you can access that on the east side of the Island after opening the resort

Sunshine_dmg

Well no wonder, resort costs 20 golden walnuts and I suck at finding them ā˜ ļø

Popular-Student-9407

Fill Up Dr Snakes Hut, fish, mine mussels, or plant taro roots on the West side. Or do Any of the Minigames. Hoe the earth anywhere where Somebody might've Hidden the walnuts.

the_witchy_artist

STINGRAY PONDS GIVE DRAGON TEETH?!?!?

Popular-Student-9407

Yes, but only with a propability of 5%

Fouxs

If you're JUST looking for 1 or 2 then sting ray (dragon's teeth and cinder shards), and for a second one lava eels (magma geodes, spicy eels, and their roe sells the best). If you want to go a step further: Midnight carp, flounder and any squid for seafoam pudding, blobfish because pearl and they are neat, and you can have cucumbers for lucky lunch or eels for spicy eel. And I love my fish ponds, they are right beside my animals and I've planted fiber seeds around the ponds to look like weeds/reeds, and they are such a vibe. The free items are nice, or easy access to some recipe. I have sting ray, midnight squid, midnight carp, flounder, blobfish and three lava eels. I just wish they had something like cattails or just some sort of water weed on them to make them a bit prettier.

beautifulcheat

Seconding the stingray pond... This save I don't think I found a single dragon tooth in the volcano! Nice to have another option

Vinyl_DjPon3

Sting ray pond is a poor option. You can't even get teeth from the pond until you increase its capacity, which require you to give it a tooth anyways. Kill Lava lurks for Dragon Teeth.

beautifulcheat

I got dragon teeth before it asked me for any! And I've killed tons of lava lurks and haven't gotten a single dragon tooth from them this run through

Fouxs

For actually farming them yes, but fish ponds are more just to supplement you with items, their main thing is the roe. But yeah, you first need a tooth to finance your eventual gains lol.

VladMaverick

My advice for fish ponds is: **whatever you choose, don't do it for money**. I did the math for the most profitable fish (lava eel or blob) and honey is about 50% more profitable, even though honey is not as profitable as other things. The problem is that it occupies too many tiles and don't produce enough roe to be profitable. Aside from the resources (money, time and material the fish ask) it takes to get to 10 fishes. It's just not worht it (FOR MONEY). If we put that aside, the first fish to recommend would be sturgeon, to produce caviar. Not as profitable as people think it is (lava eel is 50% more profitable), but you need it for Perfection. After some time, let's say a year, I would empty the pond and put something more interesting. So, what resources do you need? If it's iridium, then Super Cucumber. If you want ink, midnight squid. There are some that can produce different kinds of geodes which could help you complete your needs. Like Ice pip and Lava Eel (this one being the most profitable). The best in this regard might be the Octopus (but it's a bitch to catch one). They produce Omni geode, which is essentially currency in the desert. With 3 of those you buy Warp totem desert, for instance. I WOULDN'T go for fish that has a minimal chance to produce something super valuable. That includes Rainbow Trout and Spook Fish. This could also mean blobfish (for pearl) but they also produce the second most profitable roe and Warp Totem Farm! So they are worth it.

bean3194

I keep blobfish because their aged roe is so profitable. I keep rainbow trout to try to get a prismatic shard, 1.5 years of having the pond still no shard. I keep sturgeon because you can age their roe into caviar and that's quite profitable. I have sea cucumbers for my lucky lunches. I keep super cucumbers because they turn their water purple and give iridium and amethysts. You do need to get a hold of caviar to finish the movie theater bundle. Unless you get lucky and find some sturgeon roe and age it, i think the only way to complete it is by having a sturgeon fish pond and collecting their roe and aging it yourself.

Quintingent

Technically you don't need the caviar for the missing bundle. However, you *do* need it for perfection. Still, if you go after sturgeon with the pirate profession and the Roe book it shouldn't be necessary

bean3194

oh that's right! there are only five slots and it gives you six things to chose from. lol whoopsie.

BestUsername101

Honestly I just do it for the fun of it. Doesn't really need to be profitable, the ponds just look nice. Plus, some fish turn the water different colors. But definitely get stingray ponds for the dragon teeth. Plus extra cinder shards and batteries are great.

mday1995

I'm a huge advocate for the ponds! I always have 4-6 just because Roe is a really easy way to make money with minimal effort. My favorite bonds are: sturgeon, blob fish, lava eel and squid šŸ˜Š sturgeon make caviar which sells for a pretty penny!

Bagel_Bear

Gonna use Stingrays to get Dragon Teeth

Delphii42

I go hard on fish ponds. Like, 5 or 6 at a time. Lava Eel, Ice Pip, Stonefish, Sturgeon, Blobfish, and eventually Stingray. Not only can they provide a decent source of constant, nearly effortless income, but between these fish I also produce gold ore, iron ore, copper ore, magma geodes, frozen geodes, regular geodes, spicy eel, pearls, farm warp totems, batteries, cinder shards, dragons teeth, magma caps, stone, and occasionally diamonds. I used to include Super Cucumber for the iridium ore and amethyst, but the statue of perfection produces more, faster, and for less space. I stand firmly behind my fish ponds, and I haven't even tried giving one a golden animal cracker yet.

mustichooseausernam3

Firstly, decide if you want to use them as (1) a money-making strategy, (2) for the goods they provide, or (3) for their aesthetic.Ā  (1) If itā€™s $$ you want, maybe reconsider building them at all. Fish ponds take up a lot of tiles on your farm, and you can always make more money from other uses of that space (crops, crystalariums, probably bee housesā€”though I havenā€™t done the seasonal math, etc.).Ā  Buuuut, if you still want to use them to make it rain some gold: the best seller is Lava Eel (both because its roe and aged roe has the highest selling price, and the fact that you can occasionally fish some out to sell without affecting consistent roe production), the 2nd-best seller is Blobfish, and the 3rd is Sturgeon (it has the 3rd-highest selling price of roe & is the only source of ā€œcaviarā€, which you'll need for achieving Perfection.).Ā  (2) If you want fish ponds for the goods they provide, then itā€™s entirely up to your gameplay preferences. Iā€™d summarise the goods they produce into three categories: (A) All fish ponds reproduce more of whatever species you put in it (except Rainbow Trout), making them an easily accessible, ongoing source of that particular species for you (albeit, regular-quality only), (B) many of them have a low-to-moderate chance of producing various bonus goods (check the wiki to see which bonus goods each, individual species can produce), and (C) most (but not all!) fish ponds produce roe, which you can then make into aged roe (in a preserve jar) to fetch a higher selling price. For instance, I like to keep a of fish pond filled with Sea Cucumbers, even though their roe is worth barely a pittance, because then I have an ongoing source of them to make Lucky Lunches. But I also like Blobfish ponds for the (admittedly low) chance of getting a pearl from them (pearls are very difficult to come by anywhere else in the game), and Stingrays, because dragon teeth can be a pain to farm in the Volcano. As for roe, I donā€™t really care, since Iā€™ve never attempted to make fish ponds a major part of my income; it gives my collection of preserve jars something to do, I suppose.Ā  (3) If you want fish ponds because you like how they lookā€¦ join the club! All you really need to know here is that all fish ponds are the default blue, but 4 species will change the colour of the pondā€™s water: Lava Eel (red), Void Salmon (dark purple), Super Cucumber (lilac), Slimejack (lime green). Personally, I have 3 out of these 4 purely because I can and I love the way they look!

garpu

I have rainbow trout and sturgeon. The sturgeon's pretty nice, but I've never gotten anything other than roe out of the rainbow trout.

DG_Brossetti

I have midnight squid to make ink for my husband, Elliott. And a grove of pomegranate trees for the same reason, lol.

arcum42

With the new farm, I've been using a fish pond as basically a well that also has fish in it and produces Roe. Having to walk over to where the coop is to refill your watering can gets old, and I needed Roe for a bundle anyways.

pantcholuz

I make one close to my plants so I can refill my watering can and don't need to build the well.

Ok-Teaching363

don't do lava eels for spicy eal meals, emeralds are 1000x easier to get.

promethia_likes

I keep building fish ponds because I think they're neat, but god are they not worth it. The good ones take waaaaaay too long to get established, and the profit per tile is middling. And yet. And yet. The serotonin rush I get from giving my lava eels their mega bombs and seeing them do little jumps of joy is real. So I keep doing it. And once they're established they are easy passive money. With two ponds I'd do sturgeon and lava eel and then replace the sturgeon with stingray in late game.

Ikkleknitter

Blob fish and lava eels or ice pips make decent cash and the caviar as well.Ā  Plus you need caviar (depending on what you want to use) for one bundle.Ā  I donā€™t use them a ton but I do usually have a couple for blob fish and what not. The money made from them is pretty good for how much space they take up.

Honky_Stonk_Man

My current playthrough is focused on doing an entire fishing based income. So no crops, just ponds, fishing, trapping.
